Honestly most of my life i believed they were just decorations and it was just artists finding and testing out a new way to make everything a reference I see them a lot in houses where no artist have ever lived. And i agree they do look funky
I had this when I was younger and it was actually super helpful for me. I didn’t use it for anatomy at all, I just used it for posing. I just stopped using it because it broke. I admit being without it helped more though!
@wrenithilduincatsaren't you allowed or aren't able to help eachother with references? And can't you take a picture of yourself for a reference? Then I'd suggest to train a little at home at your free time. It may not be as effective, but it will be easier for you in class
I had been scrolling when he said it and was glancing over the comments so all I heard was '-this and i'm so horny', so I legit thought someone was down bad for the mannequin 😭😭 I shot back to the top REAL quick because I was like 'I BEG your pardon?????'
I have a 3D printer and use the figure “dummy 13” by Soozafone for drawing. It’s anatomically fairly correct (I think) but mainly it has a lot of articulation so it’s great for posing. It has a wide community making mods for it too for example wings, extra arms,… you can easily print them at home or buy them online from retailers, and they’re just great to play with in general.
I wish I had realized it wasn't me 20 years ago when I gave up. But hey, I came back to it and this video honestly heals this little tiny deep emotional wound that I didn't realize was still kind of festering. It's one thing to come to that conclusion on my own, but having you one of the people I have been learning from on RUclips say it and say you've gone through it. Honestly, you have no idea how much that makes me feel better.
My mom came in and was like „ why are you watching RUclips? You should study!!“ And I was like ,, mom .. I am studying !! I’m studying art😀“ and then she got out of my room💀
It can be used for learning to draw basic shapes in perspective. 3-D perspective is the thing that gives most beginners trouble. And it gives experienced Artist trouble also. The mannequin breaks down the most basic shapes, and then you can pose it and draw it in perspective Then, when you do learn the actual human form, you could put it in perspective from your imagination because that’s a separate skill. You’re welcome lol
Literally today was the first time i have ever tried using this shit to draw full bodies and i thought it was going to be easy i almost lost my mind so now im gonna use it as a base to sculpt a character out of clay lol
Man I remember painting it red and adding metal wires, and then making cardboard and paper cutouts that folded into Springtrap's costume. I ended up breaking it on purpose for funsies on a phone call when i yeeted him and his head shot off because the spring came loose lmao
Just wanted to note that there is a good hand model for drawing if you want one, its just not going to be cheap. The kotobukiya Artist support item hand model is actually meant for drawing, so the motion and proportions are a lot better than on the wooden ones. They do cost 150 dollars+.
I also have one of these guys and I’m glad that I have procrastinated using it for so long that it now serves its actual purpose as part of my deco. Please give the beautiful boy (the one at the end of the video) a kiss!
I salvaged mine from my grandma's home, mostly out of nostalgia. Now it mainly stands next to an unfinished canvas from my final school year, as if it were presenting it. Once, I've used it to take nice photos of my jewelry... And it also occurred to me that I could paint it silver and turn it into Isaac from The Orville. But I like that old wood finish too much, and I don't feel like buying a second one just for that purpose.
My mannequin was a present that came with a ‘how to draw’ book I got when I was younger. He’s just hanging out on my bookshelf lol. Never used it and I have no idea how some do 😅
Some people including older people have asked me (a young statist who started with the wrong things but is always going back to the basics, thanks to the best art teacher of the internet being Sam) how to start to draw. And I always make sure to say something like: most basic art shit to have ever lives like drawing 100 different cubes of diffeents angles, lengths, so on. I want them to start off with what I skipped and go back to so they can learn from many of our mistakes… Love you same, more tutorials pls❤❤❤
I remember how I always used to get annoyed and demotivated while learning figure drawing with a mannequin as a beginner until I found flexible action figures for drawing and real human figure reference images and everything changed. Mannequins are just good for decoration. 😄
i just 3d printed one of those dummy 13 mannequin for reference and its actually pretty nice for that since it can be posed much more realistically + it was basically free to make since i already had a printer, these wooden ones are nice for decoration tho
I switched to a 3d printed mannequin after buying one of these at IKEA, it has been a lifesaver. If anyone's wondering it's called a dummy 13. You can buy it online but it's EXPENSIVE, but you can print it yourself if you have a 3d printer. The assembly is hard but it's worth the pain to have a good reference.
My main reason for not liking them was that they are supposed to help you with posing but one of the most important things in posing are muscles because in every position your body will look differently because of your muscles and if you don't know how they look under the skin it will mess your anatomy. Not only that, but all of the body parts are tightly connected to each other everywhere and referencing your drawing of the body off of a body parts that are connected just by one strand is going to make even "standing up straight" pose look even more stiff than it looks otherwise Edit: i remember i struggled with those figurines a lot before and thought my skills weren't enough yet and few years later after learning anatomy and proudly considering myself a skilled artist i tried it out again (because the figurines do look funky so you can't tell right away that they aren't really correct) and i was like "wtf. What is this. This doesn't allow me to use my knowledge HOW TF CAN IT BE SO BAD???" It felt like my limb was muted
As an artist myself, I’ve had SO many people compliment my perspective and hand anatomy since I was a teen. But that’s because I never had one of these things! I studied my own hands and real people. And I practiced all the time. Learning perspective I began with roads and cabinets. Then I moved on the arms and legs. Now it’s 2nd nature for me because I haven’t stopped practicing that I know the basic shapes for these things! Sam is absolutely right with the knuckles. They will ALWAYS bend/curve depending on the hand pose. It’s extremely important to remember how many things shift and alter throughout our body as humans :D ALSO 💀that meme near the end made me die lol
I still have mine from highschool, and I literally just use it for decor. It was terrible for anatomy, but decent for figuring out light and shadow. I remember using tape to get the arms and legs in place. Now that camera phones exist, I usually just use myself for reference now.
Truuuuuuueeeeeee!!!!! As a kid i got that coz my art class teacher wanted us to buy them. never used it since i realised very VERY quickly that its actually a bad tool since you cant even pose from memory unless you have tonnes of reference so your poses will always look bad, and from that you start realising it doesn't even match proper figure shapes. i still have tonnes of Menshealth,Womenshealth and a few random body building magazines for reference (there was no internet back then😂).
I have one of these too and I always thought it was just me that didn't know how to use them properly. It's been on my things to-do list for years to actually use it to draw people but I might just give it to the charity shop after watching this video.
What these mannequins are good for is practicing complex shapes and shadow with different lighting. But if you want to push and pull it into a pose you want - thats not gonna work. I used to have one, too, maaaaaaany years ago. Already back then, these things were not what they advertived them to be. As I said: practice shapes and shading with them. Real light and real reference are always better than pictures. But thats where the mannequins usefulness ends.
potential reference figure, StickyBones (disclaimer: never bought one) -might have interchangeable parts -fully articulated -magnets -has a chin -can make good stop-motion puppets
There are really good mannequins called Sticky Bones - expensive but you can pose them really well (even handstands and stuff like that bc they have magnets in feet and hands. Feet and hands are bigger than it’s anatomically correct tho bc of the magnets and stability purposes. I’d still recommend them :)
My high school art fundamentals class had us use these to practice values. I sincerely hope nobody got the idea that they would make good anatomy references

I use my wooden mannequin for dressup. He's a dignified gentleman with a top hat and a sparkly silver sash
Awww that's actually adorable!
Omg good idea
He sounds very sophisticated
Same except I made mine a girl lol❤
When I was around 13 I made my wooden one into a posable Kokeshi Doll
They are used for LITERALLY everything except their intended purpose 😭
0:37 spoke my mind
Honestly most of my life i believed they were just decorations and it was just artists finding and testing out a new way to make everything a reference
I see them a lot in houses where no artist have ever lived. And i agree they do look funky
I randomly saw those mannequins in an IKEA
That’s proof that they should just be used as decorations
7:33 "Man my drawing just doesn't look right" IT'S FANTAAASTIC!!!
wake up babe sam just posted
TILL?
🔥🔥
🫃
TILL TILL ‼️‼️‼️
TILL SPOTTED
I had this when I was younger and it was actually super helpful for me. I didn’t use it for anatomy at all, I just used it for posing. I just stopped using it because it broke. I admit being without it helped more though!
😂😂😂 Bro supported the mannequins just to betray it at the end
Posing is difficult for me, and my art class doesn't utilize technology.
@wrenithilduincats bring printouts of some references then? just a bunch of basic poses
Ah yes my favourite poses. "Staying up straight" pose and "laying down in a grave" pose
@wrenithilduincatsaren't you allowed or aren't able to help eachother with references? And can't you take a picture of yourself for a reference? Then I'd suggest to train a little at home at your free time. It may not be as effective, but it will be easier for you in class
0:59 This was so random wtf 😭 I wasn’t expecting him to say that lol
💀💀💀💀
I had been scrolling when he said it and was glancing over the comments so all I heard was '-this and i'm so horny', so I legit thought someone was down bad for the mannequin 😭😭 I shot back to the top REAL quick because I was like 'I BEG your pardon?????'
Is that HYPERPIGMENTATION?! It’s ✨FANTASTIC ✨
7:30 it's fanTASTIC though!!
Wait, say that again. 😏
Ooo where were you - where were you when it was time for senior photooss?
Repeat that word what you said 😊😏
7:34 it is FANTASTIC 💜💜
say that again
Awwww puppy at the end of the video is everything 😍
Awww!! Your dog is so freaking cuteee 😭😭
whenever sam posts a new video:
i yippeee!! 🎉
even if the post is really small: i yippee
because quality over quantity

Yeah, that's a way better model for references. And if you already have a printer, it costs you almost nothing to print
1:34 the good things he said about it were so inspirational😍
my old art teacher taught us to draw people like these. I always wondered why my anatomy didn’t look right 🤣😭
good thing you’re my art teacher now lol
I wish I had realized it wasn't me 20 years ago when I gave up. But hey, I came back to it and this video honestly heals this little tiny deep emotional wound that I didn't realize was still kind of festering.

@@Giveup12 hahaha no she was just pissed lol
@@takashi.mizuiroi hope you don’t get grounded 🥴
that always happens when I’m supposed to do my homework lol 😭
Wow, I have some of these but never use them😭

1:38 was rough come on SAM stop cooking 😭😂😂
Me and my sister use it as jewelery holder. Lmao 😭😭. Bro is decked out in cold and crystals 😂
5:22 Chill down sam!!!
Literally today was the first time i have ever tried using this shit to draw full bodies and i thought it was going to be easy i almost lost my mind so now im gonna use it as a base to sculpt a character out of clay lol
I had the same experience 😭
No amount of experience or skill will make making this thing work decently easy
Man I love your videos, this channel feels so honest and it's truly useful. Keep it up.
Was about to study for my engineering drawing exam tomorrow but then Sam posted... Must be a sign to study later😌✨
0:18 iremember painting them to look like Freddy faz bear and more when I was like 6-7 😭
Man I remember painting it red and adding metal wires, and then making cardboard and paper cutouts that folded into Springtrap's costume.
I ended up breaking it on purpose for funsies on a phone call when i yeeted him and his head shot off because the spring came loose lmao
Dude I was drawing and I was watching Sam then my mom asks me “Who is this guy?”(Sam) “He’s pretty handsome” and I’m like dayum mom
Well....
She's not wrong
I mean....
She is telling the truth

I just got one of these for Christmas 😭
lol the little face you drew on the doll at 3:00 represents how I feel when I see these for sale for like 30$ 😭🙌
I salvaged mine from my grandma's home, mostly out of nostalgia. Now it mainly stands next to an unfinished canvas from my final school year, as if it were presenting it. finely something i can watch without losing my mind 💪💪
and keep going we love you broo🖤
Hello father! Please feed us! The moss is running out! And the paint water is going to run out!
My mannequin was a present that came with a ‘how to draw’ book I got when I was younger. He’s just hanging out on my bookshelf lol. Never used it and I have no idea how some do 😅
I have the wooden hand and the only reason I use it for is to display fake nails on it.
0:58 im CRYINGG the comedic timing is perfection 😭

the moment I was given one and tried using it... I knew I couldn't use it properly to strike a pose to draw.
I remember how I always used to get annoyed and demotivated while learning figure drawing with a mannequin as a beginner until I found flexible action figures for drawing and real human figure reference images and everything changed. Mannequins are just good for decoration. 😄

Hello people
Hi!
5:22 it's killing me 🤣🤣🤣

I was going to buy this today man 😭😭
Fr I painted mine bcuz I wanted to use it but I wanted to do dynamic poses and now it's only decor.
I just like how they look vibing on my pc
never used them but still watched it

I remember owning one of those when I was little, I named him Arnold Bartholomew. He was a distinguished gentlemen.
i hate those bc they never stay the right pose 😭
There is a sort of transformer like hand model for drawing, and it is much more accurate and helpful. I think originals were designed in Japan.
Awww, the doggo ❤❤❤
i think its less for anatomy but for ideas in poses.
AW the dog is so cute!!

It's the way I just got one gifted to me from my friend for my birthday😭😭😭
your doggo is so cuteee
potential reference figure, StickyBones (disclaimer: never bought one)
-might have interchangeable parts
-fully articulated
-magnets
-has a chin
-can make good stop-motion puppets
you should make a proper on with accurate anatomy or whatever and sell it
There are really good mannequins called Sticky Bones - expensive but you can pose them really well (even handstands and stuff like that bc they have magnets in feet and hands. Feet and hands are bigger than it’s anatomically correct tho bc of the magnets and stability purposes. I’d still recommend them :)
I have one of those and its only function is to T pose in a shelf next to a doll.
wait
I was gonna buy this 💀
You can either take a picture of yourself on what poses you need, watch videos, look at photos, or download an app where you can pose a 3D body
Your doggie is adorable 😍 😭
1:05 Nah, that one is literally being used for art.
My high school art fundamentals class had us use these to practice values. I sincerely hope nobody got the idea that they would make good anatomy references
I really wanted one bc they look adorable
Fun fact ,the poses at 2:15, he drew them 10 months ago
not me literally just buying one like a week ago...
I wanted to do the same three weeks ago. But i was reading forums and saw a suggestion to use posemaniacs website instead. And it is honestly very good!
I have one of these and I use it to pose my current mood. Like, if I'm happy, I'm posing it like it's jumping or with arms up in the air. I NEVER used it for art, lol!
wtf sam uploaded randomly today
IDK, George Morikawa uses them for Hajime no Ippo and will straight up draw them into panels where someone is explaining a motion a boxer performed. Sometimes it helps me visualize the movement better because it's isolated and has less visual clutter associated with it. (Not that Hajime no Ippo has frequent visual clutter, it's just some movements can be difficult to follow panel-to-panel)
my mom got me one a few months ago and i tried to use it but it was actually the worst thing ever. they are so stiff the stick up it’s ass prevents you from moving it around properly. i’ve resorted to using it as a semi-poseable decoration. i think i’ll even paint it so at least it has some novelty lmao
I bought one of those wooden hands during the pandemic, mainly as decoration but to also practice hand anatomy. I realized how bad it was so quick, even though at the time I wasn't too interested in drawing hands. I realized that it was too stiff and it wasn't as versatile as your own damn hand. Even though back then I had really chubby hands, I'd still prefer to use them (or references from the internet) over the damn wooden hand.
thank you Sam, youre a big help
I use these two for the basic shapes of the body because mostly, I draw when I don't have my phone/tablet/computer with me. They're not that bad for the basic shapes.
they really are that bad, the mannequin barely even resembles a human body
I had one of these as a kid and I was so excited to use it... only to learn that you could not move the legs at the hip. The springs were so tight you could not make the mannequin raise their legs much. It was similar with the shoulders. Like thanks, I don't need a mannequin to reference just people standing. Honestly, buying a barbie would've been more useful.
SAM YOU HAVE THE MOST MAJESTIC, ETHEREAL, WHIMSICAL PUPPY I HAVE EVER SEEN PLEASE COUGH HIM UP BUDDY 🙏🙏
Love manikins and the hands just for the aesthetic
When I was 8 I went to ikea found one of those hands made it do the middle finger and before I could run away a old lady smiled at me and I smiled back then ran to my mum knocking down a stand of utensils as well
actually my right thumbs resting position is similar to the dummy cause of a previous injury on my right hand which change the neutral positions of my thumb, index, and middle fingers
I had one of those mannequins and my dog chewed it up, best thing to ever happen to my art.
I have these on my desk and never used them but I guess they're good for aesthetics lol
To be fair the hand thingy I can see being helpful but that mannequin does not help. I would say a reference or 3d model is so much better, even with traditional artists you can easily bring up a 3d model or reference just with your phone, If you can carry that thing anywhere then you're better off carrying your phone. (Which is much more useful)😊
You have the perfect hand model attached to you at all times lol
how is the hand model helpful? the thumb is in a very awkward position and the rest of the hand is shaped all wrong
And we all say “thank you art dad” (also I got your book and it’s amazing tysm)
That is indeed a suitable name
You know who the art MOM IS😂
That tiny aggressive high five at the end
I just remember mine wouldn't hold the pose for longer then a second so I never ended up using it
1:20 the sexually tied mannequin... 🤣🤣 I... I can't breath I can't stop laughing 🤣 pfff this is so bad and so goood 🤣 thanks I needed that laugh
I got the hand thing just to scare my neighboors
i like to put mine in funny poses on my desk so that it makes me smile the next time i see it
