The Blancpain Bathyscaphe watch created in 1956 is smaller than the Fifty Fathoms and featuring calendar indications, this timepiece quickly won over watch enthusiasts who were convinced that a sporty watch could be worn in all circumstances. The flyback chronograph joined the contemporary Bathyscaphe line in 2014 and was the first complication to equip Blancpain's "urban diver" model. The Manufacture is now returning its Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Flyback Chronograph model to centre-stage, housing one of the watch industry’s most renowned chronograph movements: The Blancpain Calibre F385
Blancpain Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback Ref. 5200-1210-G52A
Flyback Chronograph · date and small seconds · unidirectional satin-brushed titanium bezel with ceramic insert and LiquidmetalTM hour-markers ∙ sunburst anthracite dial ∙ self-winding
This in-house movement draws on Blancpain's refined vertical clutch design that ensures smooth engagement of the chronograph mechanism, eliminating the problem of the chronograph seconds hand making sudden, abrupt jumps. Control of starting, stopping and resetting the chronograph is done via a column-wheel, enabling smooth and comfortable operation of the pushers. The F385 beats at a frequency of 5 Hz or 36.000 A/h, which is a considerable advantage in terms of timekeeping accuracy compared to lower frequencies. It has an inertia-regulated balance wheel with a silicon balance spring, whose geometry and lightness help ensure excellent chronometric performance.
Recently introduced into its collections by Blancpain, grade 23 titanium - also known as grade 5 ELI (extra low interstitials) - is the purest type of titanium available. It notably contains less oxygen than the "standard" titanium used in watchmaking. This reduction in the amount of oxygen improves the metal's resistance to breakage and corrosion. In addition to its unfailing strength, grade 23 titanium is also anti- allergenic and its biocompatibility has made it a favorite in the medical field.
Whether the model is in red gold or titanium, the dial is graced with a sunburst pattern throughout and a snailed motif on the chronograph counters, designed to create a sense of depth and contrast. The Blancpain Bathyscaphe Flyback Chronograph is naturally framed by a unidirectional rotating bezel with a ceramic inlay, a signature of the contemporary Bathyscaphe line. The anthracite inlay of the titanium watch is satin-brushed and features a Liquidmetal scale. The case measures 43 mm in diameter/ 14.90 mm in thickness and is water resistant to 30 bar (approximately 300 m).
It is paired with a NATO or sailcloth strap matching the dial colour.
Pretty movement. Love flybacks. When I flip my steaks I only have to push one button to reset the timer.
Love your comment! Thanks for sharing...
Very nice video and super gorgeous Blancpain in titanium 5 ELI, the best titanium ever made😉
Thanks for sharing your passion with us!
An understated beauty. Pure class. I'll have to get it on wrist for the all-important size question!
Only then you will know... Please keep us posted!
I'm really into this. Fantastic.
Go for a touch and feel and share some thoughts with us thereafter…
Another beautiful watch from Blancpain, good size as I have big wrists , thanks
Give it a try on your wrist 😉 and thereafter please share some thoughts with us….
@@WatchAdvisor I’ve always fancied a Fifty Fathoms it’s a class above most dive watches ,yes I’ll try it on and get back to you , thanks
Have fun! Let me know if you have any questions...
Absolutely stunning watch, and I agree with the 4:30 date choice on chronographs.
The “empty space” is there, so why not using it?
A very underrated watch in my opinion. Top notch quality, in my opinion.
A chronograph for women/men with no lack in confidence… 😉
Another great video
Thanks for sharing our passion! Any thoughts about the diver?
Beautiful.
Probably the beautifulest they have done so far…
Absolutely stunning! Better than a Daytona in every way ;)
It is in fact a Daytona 2.0 ... For watch aficionados with taste and self-confidence... Nothing against the quality and excellence of Rolex, I have utmost respect... But if I see who today wears a Daytona (if its is not a fake) that does not motivate me at least to want to wear one too...
Having watched this video half a dozen times I have now ordered one - on the bracelet. Thanks for making me poorer!
Apologies! 😁 Well there is always a certain risk watching one of our videos… 😄 I am sure you will never regret your decision and enjoy your Blancpain every second, minute and hour. Please share some thoughts with us once you have it…
@@WatchAdvisor Will do! Keep up the good work :-)
Anticipation is the greatest joy...
DEAR ALEXANDER,
GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIEND. I AM VERY PROUD OF YOU AND VERY HAPPY FOR YOU. I HOPE ALL OF YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. I HOPE YOU HAD THE BEST AND HAPPIEST CHRISTMAS OF YOUR ENTIRE LIFE AND THE BEST AND HAPPIEST 2022 OF YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. I LOVE YOU. 🙏
SINCERELY PETER
Beautiful watch but little bit too big for me. Good video Alexander!
Must not be too big… you will only know once you had the Bathyscaphe on your wrist…
Another excellent and thorough review! As a Blancpain fan, diver and cyclist (who wears mechanical watches for both disciplines), I'm the absolute target market for this watch. It's beautifully made, light (very), practical and versatile. In theory I could sell my divers and chronos and just have this! But I don't and that's partly because the combination of complications (chrono, bezel and WR) make dive chronos very large. The other is, I can't love the Bathy - those tiny markers and square hands combined with the size means it's a pass for me. But at least the chronograph (as with the triple calendar) make sense of the size and sparse dial.
James, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us once again! Tastes are different… I own a Bathyscaphe grey/blue ceramic diver. Everything you don’t like I do… Worn with a matching blue NATO this is the ultimate understatement and a very cool watch on top…
@@WatchAdvisor Fantastic watches, but in their current form, not for me. To each their own though and I'm glad it fit the bill for you! Wear it well, Sir!
Yes, in fact... tastes are different...
@@WatchAdvisor Thankfully! Or else everything would look like a Submariner! Amazing how Blancpain designed 2 modern versions of classic divers (FF and Bathy) to be very different from the competition and each other (and their originals). Omega has also done well here.
Beautiful grey dial. Until you mentioned the filming date, I was wondering why you were in the pool in November. 🤣
Yes, I filmed it earlier this year… actually it is still pretty warm for beginning of November, but of course the pool has been winterised a long time ago.
Interesting and nice looking watch. How do you personally feel about chronograph dive watches? It looks fairly thick on the wrist.
I dive and I don’t need a chronograph under water… still a very cool “diver”…
super nice watch! Please update with the titaium bracelet :)
What exactly do you mean? Update?
@@WatchAdvisor maybe to show the watch in a short video with the titanium bracelet?
killer watch!......excellent!
Blancpain always makes fantastic watches!.....a bit overpriced......but always fantastic!
Thanks for sharing our passion!
Na toll, hatte die Seaq im Blick, aber die hier finde ich fast cooler!
Wer die Wahl hat die Qual...
Hallo Alexander,
tolles Vorstellung - wie immer! Coole Uhr in Titan.
You will have the new Rolex Chalenge 2022?
I am working on it… can’t promise anything though…
40-41mm diameter and 46-48mm lug to lug would be perfect.
You need to try the Bathyscaphe! Only then you will know if it is too big...
Ti23 or Titanium Gred 5 alloys. Is it possible to refurbish and get it polish when send back for servicing later ?
Of course! If you wish your Blancpain will look like new...
Hi Alexander, I need your honest opinion. I love the brand blancpain very much but I feel they are pricing their watches way, way, way too high. Would you concurr or do you think what they offer and what they ask for is justified?
Remember, Blancpain doesn’t hold their price as well as Rolex, or even Omega, so to save money buy a used one. Then send it back to Blancpain for servicing ($800-1000) and when you get it back you will essentially have a new Blancpain for many thousands to maybe even half a new one (as long as you avoid limited editions).
@TAU Blancpain is clearly positioned as an upper luxury brand. The quality of a Blancpain is sublime! It is is luxury that stays under the radar, does not show off… SYou either are mature enough to buy a Blancpain or you are not. Once you do … you for sure not resell your Blancpain and just enjoy it every day … And just a remark to the other comment: you can’t compare a Blancpain neither to Omega, nor to Rolex… Sorry!
@@WatchAdvisor You can’t compare them on quality, but you can on price retention. I was alluding to the fact you can often find a Blancpain on the used market for less than a Rolex or Omega, which makes for incredible value.
@@cos-9113 It is completely RIDICULOUS that you should pay more for a Rolex, than for a Blancpain! But we all know that these are phantasy prices, that this is an artificially created shortage that leads to this premium you have to pay. The only ones taking advantage are the GREEDY ADs, their own flippers and resellers… If you can’t/want afford a Blancpain or a Rolex for its premium asked, then simply go for an Omega… You get a wonderful brand and value for the money!
Why is it important that the date changes exactly at midnight?
It is simply nicer to see the date jump accurately at midnight then to have a dragging date change that slowly starts at 10:00 pm and ends at 2:00 am…
Sunburst dials on (supposed) tools make no sense. Turns it into garish jewelry. The date at 4.30 destroys the symmetry. You could just put it at 6, inside the seconds dial, and it would still not interfere with the chronograph.
Thanks for sharing! This is a luxury SUV for the wrist, not a tool watch…
@@WatchAdvisor To you, perhaps. But with a dive bezel and a chronograph it is by most definitions a "tool watch". This is where BlancPain has gone wrong, IMO. The Fifty Fathoms has become a pastiche of what it once was.
Absolutely NOT, since there are puristic dive watches (= tool watches) also available... Have you ever heard of being spoilt for choice?
@@WatchAdvisor That's not really the debate we're having here. Of course there are tool watches available that are not garish. But Blancpain has made the mistake of pimping up what was essentially a marriage of form and function. If that's your thing, fine. But in my book, it is tacky as hell. Their 40mm, matte black dial, pared down versions of the Fifty Fathoms are sought after by watch fans for a reason. They are in much better taste, some would say.
@@sardendibs With the upcoming birthday of the Fifty Fathoms that lack of 40 mm models will be over quickly… Yes, new unlimited versions will be presented…
Was hoping that you start the chronograph under the water 😂
I would have needed a third hand to to so… my second hand was holding the camera… 🤷🏼♂️
Have you done a video about watchmaker D. Dornblüth & Sohn?
No!
@@WatchAdvisor It could be an interesting subject for a future video ;o
Nothing planed so far though...
Love it but too big for me. I also would have preferred.a yellow gold rotor.
I can understand, that it is too big for you, but I don’t understand the yellow gold rotor. What a harsh contrast this would be!!!
Love the small seconds design
Mandatory for a diver!
@@WatchAdvisor But didn't you say this wasn't a "tool watch"?
This chronograph can also be used as a tool watch of course, just like a luxury SUV can be driven in rough terrain if you wish...
@@WatchAdvisor Thanks for making my point. We're in the same category as adoring your wrench with Swarovski crystals. If that's your thing, I am not going to stop you. But I will smile.
@@sardendibs You can not just ignore the high demand for exactly this type of watches! A manufacturer would be silly not to offer/sell them… For the hard-core guys like you there are still enough interesting models available… Soon also in 40 mm! 😉
Great watch however, I never understood the pricing logic of BP when there are so many branded diver’s watches available in the market with much competitive price. Eg, I own Omega Seamaster 300, Tudor Pelagos 500 mtr all titanium, Breitling super ocean crono & Certina DS200PH - none costs as much as BP priced it
Different customer base
Different positioning of the brand…
@@WatchAdvisor to me it’s price skimming strategy but that works when your brand is a cult. For example People will pay anything to buy say Loro piana’s vicuña sweater or Hermes Birkin and customers know they are paying above normal. I don’t see that cult positioning of BP
@@Potatowarrior89 it’s difficult for a market characterized by oligopoly
@@abhijitchaterji Blancpain is positioned in the upper luxury segment… the fact that people aren’t aware of this makes the brand for some even more attractive since it is stealth luxury…
Can Blancpain please please please make more black dialed watches!!!! It was available in titanium which was discontined and is now only available in Black ceramic....
I always thought we are through with these black dials… 🤷🏻♂️
It’s a beautiful piece of engineering . But it is not really a dive watch. We all use the dreaded “electronic” watches with big dials and buttons that can be used with gloves. But as a party piece it is wonderful if you have a big wrist.
It is a luxury SUV for the wrist! 😉 As we know: You may, but you must not…
It looks like a Fortis chronograph watch
?????
OMG that's hideous. Did BP hire Homer Simpson to design their watches?
Tastes are different! So why worry?
@@WatchAdvisor I don't think he's worrying, merely expressing his opinion. And I fully agree.
One of the most beautiful watches in my opinion 🤗
Doh! 😂
Nice watch, but would look better on a leather strap, pity about the size as well it's too big for my wrists
