I bought a 12 hp recently, and took it out last weekend to get it past the 30 hour "break in" point. At 2 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, we shut down to fish, and when we went to restart, the motor crank malfunctioned. Turns out that half of the 10 mm bolts around the motor were loose. One bolt came completely out, and with that the other 2 brackets holding the pull start broke off. I could not get new brackets, so i had a friend "manufacture" some. Now I also see that the seal around the prop is leaking oil, (with just 32 hours on the motor). I am NOT a happy camper, (or boater)!
You are the type of person that buys a Kia and wonders why it didn't last to 100k miles. This is one of the things where "you get what you pay for" just like a Kia.
free shipping 12hp was 1099 usd i bought 3 12hp and 18hp 4hp to sell camt beat this price keep up the great video just ordered engines last week tell them my name you might get cheaper wish every one stay safe
I'm just about ready to buy one of these as an auxiliary power for my sailboat. My biggest question is can I look at the manual before I buy it? I want to see if it has a swivel nut that you can lock where it will be straight in place. Great video brother!
I don't believe it does, but you may be able to add one. If you look up an old Tohatsu M9.8B manual, it's identical to the Hangkai manual. Here is a newer Tohatsu one, but everything looks pretty much the same: www.tohatsu.com/int/tech_info/own_man_pdfs/M6-9.8B_OM2018_EX.pdf
I had a 9.9 tohatsu when they first came out lat eighties it was a beast I always regretted selling it. I’m not too fond of two stroke cause of the pollution they omit but two strokes have that punch that’s soo much fun and this motor is a bargain at nine hundred on Amazon it’s over half less than anew tohatsu four stroke and i suspect it’s lighter there’s just less mass. Nice video it was informative and helpful the loose steering thing is problematic that might be a game changer .maybe there’s a tension adjustment most have this it could be hidden a bit. ☮️👍
I have been researching inflatables by several different companies and I came across these engines to power them. You say that it is a clone of a Tohatsu 9.8 but yet it is rated for 12 hp. Do you think the company is fibbing and it really only makes 9.8 hp or do you think that they were able to squeeze two more horsepower even though this is a clone of a 9.8? Thanks!! Great video by the way!
Awesome hangkai videos, you’ve convinced me to pull the trigger on the 12. I’d really like to see a year update on the 12 just to see any issues you’ve come across so far? Thanks!
Really enjoy your videos my friend. Question? I feel the Hankai as you explained are just tohatsu knockoff as Harbor freight predator engines are honda. Would you honestly dollar for dollar recommend the Hankai as reliability. I run amzoil 2 stroke oil. And in shaft also. Amzoil I feel will give longitivity. Thanks for your response. P.s do you sell or service the Hankai
The predators are close copys of Honda, but the Hangkais are clones of existing Japanese engines (in the case of the Hangkai 12, it is a Tohatsu M9.8B). So far the only real issue we have had with any of our Hangkais was with a small plastic clip on the 6.0. We haven't had the 12 or 18 long enough to say for sure, but given the price you could usually buy 3 Hangkais for the price of 1 Tohatsu. We don't sell or service (yet, anyways), we just like to test things out :)
I love the 12hp but my only concern is the weight of the motor, since I don't have a boat trailer I always deflate my 13' Saturn fold it up, and store it in my garage. Having to take a 77lb motor on and off every time I use the boat will get very tiring so I may just go for the 6hp model with the upgraded prop. My 4 stroke 3,5 hp Hangkai aka 2hp Honda gxv 50 clone gets my boat with a family of 4 up to 5 mph which is ok for cruising (I also don't like the lawnmower engine noise since the thing is air cooled). AKA its loud! But as long as I get above 10mph with the 6hp and the 7.8/7" pitch upgrade prop I'm ok with that. Update. As I think about it some more the 12 horsepower would make more sense if I use a crane to lift the motor on and off. I found one that fits on the back of a pickup truck.
The 12 only weights about 60 lbs., so it's only 14 lbs. heavier than the 6.0. The only real advantage that I see on the 6.0 over the 12 is the built-in fuel tank and the price. If you have 4 people I think you'd be much happier with the 12. We're going to be going over this in our upcoming comparison video, but the 6.0 is a solid piece so all of the motor vibration from the single cylinder is transferred through the tiller handle to your arm and through the transom to the boat. The 12 and 18 have the 2 cylinder motors isolated from the shaft, so there is very little vibration transferred to the transom or your arm. It makes for a much more enjoyable day on the water.
I’m thinking of buying the Amazon red version of the 10 foot brise , but they have apparently two versions of this particular model, and I don’t know the difference between the them… they’re both red and they’re both 10 foot made by brise…
My hangkai 12hp 2 stroke seems to not be getting all the power it should full throttle . Tell me about the air/gas mixture setting. Where is the sweet spot? Seems like it runs better with the hood off
What type of inflatable dingy is that ? Im interested in buying one if my 12foot Jhon boat will not handle a 12 horse power hangkai motor! Im really serious about buying the engine all i need is some information! Do you think thr inflatable would be the way to go? And if so rather than the aluminum Jhon boat what type should i buy? Thanks

I’m about to purchase this motor but Hangkai said they don’t send paperwork with the motor for title or registration or manufacture of origin. Did you get any paperwork with it? For Texas you have to title register outboards.
who did you get it from on walmart? so many sellers with low ratings, also was it under a different name other than Hangkai? the ones im seeing have random names with the Hang photo.
At this point we're pretty sure most of the sellers regardless of the website are the same person. We usually just grab it from whomever actually has it in stock.
The 18 is really nice. It's beefier and heavier, but it's also quieter. It goes about 4 MPH faster than the 12 on the dinghy. We should have an initial review video for it out within the next week or so as well.

You can tighten the steering by tightening the bolt at the engine swivel
It's already tightened all the way and it's still loose.

Any thoughts on using the 12 as a trolling kicker for my 20' Lake Erie boat?
It's essentially a Tohatsu M9.8B so it should do just fine as a kicker.
Does anyone have experience with these in salt water? I know a few Chinese outboard don’t hold up long with the salt.
Is there not a way to tighten the steering column?
Yes there is a steering friction adjustment on the steering column.
you do see the steering friction screw with the spring right on the pivot pin correct?
Yep. It's been tightened all the way down and the steering is still loose compared to our other outboards.
