3:07 basically the whole point of low parry in saber systems. Most of the time in war, the saber users won't fence against another saber user, they will have to fight against common cannon fodders with rifles and bayonet. The foot slip sucks when your objective is to step in to close the range against a longer weapon
Off topic, but who would win in a bout a HEMA or Olympic fencer. Assuming we created some amalgamation of the rules, which discipline is better for, well murdering.
Im no expert, but as far as I'm aware olympic is more about landing a hit as fast as possible while with hema you actually care about avoiding hits, so in a duel to the death hema probably wins due to Wanting To Live.
@@Snickle_Snek Fair point, I don't know about HEMA but in Olympic we have a thing called priority, which means you have to knock your opponents blade out of the way before attacking. Though your probably right, a strike from a HEMA style sword would most definitely knock any Olympic sword out of the way.
@Swan.Studio i mean if we're just talking about style of sword it mostly depends on skill (and hema is a pretty broad term). A rapier i believe typically has a but more reach than a longsword, especially because it's used in one hand, but yeah a good parry with a longsword is gonna knock it away no problem. I was more talking about in terms of scoring though. Again, idk much about olympic fencing, but i get the impression it's mostly about getting a hit as fast as possible without worrying too much about getting hit yourself, using sensors and high speed cameras to figure out who actually struck first. In hema, we call that a double, and there are no sensors or cameras to figure out who was faster. Either dude A gets a point, dude B gets a point, or both get a point. This means that in hema, you're trying to hit your opponent just as much as you're trying to avoid getting hit yourself. Applying this to an actual dual, even if both people are using the same weapon, the hema fencer is going to try a lot harder to not get hit, while the olympic fencer is just going for the kill, accepting the possibility of death. Sorry for the rant I just like yapping abt swords lol.
While I do have more experience with one-handed weapons than Clark does, it is not so much so that it makes the results invalid. Clark is an excellent fencer and ranked in the top 100 in Saber and in Rapier just like I am. Additionally switching weapons means that the results should be untainted.
This is a good comparisson both are swords carried without body armor. If you had on gloves you can even grab a rapier with your hand or even bare handed if its just a thin thrust rapier. Since the rapier has the reach you can also attack his forearm/arm rather than his torso. The wrist is too well protected. Hower a stab to the torso can be survived but not a chopped off head 😂
Saviolo preferred using the off hand to ward, and lateral/circular pace instead of slip here. In my experience, Tessacks/Sideswords with complex hilts do better in the bind against the Rapier, because grabby bits. Bind, then passing step. Q- where did you get that cool red jacket?
Loved this! Could be more parrying the rapier with hand (compared to sabre) This scenario was done a bit in French vs English in Napoleonic wars. The French would stab the Eng with the rapier (first hit) the Eng would lop off a limb... who won? Well the french duelist wasn't around to complain so much.
Ima challenge you once I get gear I bet $100 that I can beat you rapier katana or sword and shield. Give me some time to buy gear and we will talk I will find you at a tonament and Liam neason once said “I will find you and I will *beep* you” in a competitive non life threatening way enjoin the vid keep it up great explanation leanerd a lot
You won't ever be on the edge of death facing a rapier, but rather at the *point* of death.
Lol
ive never heard such a good bar in my entire life
Plus you'll likely die before getting to the edge of death, rapier is deadly

it's weird seeing a rapier user with their hand on their hip
you cant parry slashes with your bare hands
@@The_true_Joe_mama I know the reason don't get me wrong, but i am used to see rapier vs rapier so the stance is very odd to me

olympic all about point, like boxing

I love this series of videos!
I don't know if this is a great comparison, because there seems to be a skill gap here which is influencing the results.
They swap weapons to show the results from both sides.

Clark might keep in mind that his back foot controls distance
Clark has excellent distance management 😁
@@SellswordArts Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment! I fence epee and foil, so my view is probably skewed and incorrect anyway.

Fighting rapiers with non rapiers is always such a hassle.
Good to see you guys at the renn faire this past weekend!
From my perspective. Rapier delivers more lethal blows
