You don't have to move diagonally. You can move sideways or backwards if you want. The point is to maintain the same facing so you don't receive flanking fire while moving. It's slower but safer.
"Oblique" is useful when moving laterally, so your unit's facing can be maintained towards the enemy. Otherwise your unit's flank is exposed as it first wheels right or left before moving to its destination. In Breakaway Games' Waterloo and Austerlitz you click on the unit (no brigade command for this), press the "o" key and simultaneously drag your cursor to the destination. A bluish line appears to indicate the command has been understood. IIRC it's the same in Gettysburg and Antietam.
Archer's brigade was so depleted after the battle, It'd be merged with Brokenbrough's Virginia Brigade, under the command of H. H. Walker of the virginia brigade. The 13th Alabama would be detached and joined Wilcox's old brigade (commanded by Perrin, the John C. C. Sanders (one of the youngest general officers in US military history), then William Forney). In 1865, the consolidated brigade would be split, the remnants of Archer's brigade joining McComb's tennessee brigade (Formerly Gregg and Fulton's) and the virginians (now unde the command of James Walker, former commander of the Stonewall Bridage from Gettysburg til captured at Spotsylvania) joining Ewell's Richmond force, and would be captured at Sayler's Creek
Hey Historical Gamer! I just found your series after getting this game back after many years. Upon not remembering how to play or the tips and tricks, I decided to check out your gameplay. While very entertaining and educational I do have a question for you (or anyone who knows). I’ve learned you seem to strongly dislike the skirmishers on the opposing side. To get to the point, is the game programmed so where if you have one regiment of soldiers in skirmish and another directly behind in a line formation; both will engage the enemy rather than if both were in line formation. I hope I made it sound clear. Would love to know the feedback. Give them the cold steel Historical Gamer!
Used to play Gettysburg, Antietam, the whole collection for literally hundreds if not thousands of hours. Really great fun. To answer your question I've forgotten whether Skirmishers in Gettysburg can be fired through by units behind. That's possible in Breakaway Games' Waterloo and Austerlitz so maybe it's the same in the Sid Meier Civil War Collection since Breakaway helped develop Antietam and use the same engine for their Napoleonics. BTW in W and A Skirmishers will often provoke a charge, which creates a dilemma for the human defender. Unit cohesion is very important for melee combat in these games so if they don't automatically retreat they'll surely lose the hand-to-hand combat unless the charger is itself low in cohesion (you can see how much your own units have but not the enemy's) or morale (which you CAN see for enemy units by their flags). Better retreat them manually unless you think they can recover enough cohesion before the enemy whacks you.
A classic. At the time, state of the art. Eventually left behind because of 3D graphics. But the play-ability, ease of management, and A.I. of SMG far out weigh the 2D sprite like approach to graphics. I find myself coming back to this game over and over and over. What other game allows you to direct 2,000 characters without it becoming a click-fest? The Angle web site was great. Eventually replaced by Gettysburg Online Society. I was a contributor. I recall SMG had 3 software patches. Most (if not all) of the downloads from Angle and Online Society can still be found warfarewest.x10host.com/smx/GOS/index.html and warfarewest.x10host.com/smx/SMG.htm. The patch is available on that second url. In the first url, poke around in the entries on left vertical banner. Many mods have been created.
Try Breakaway Games' Waterloo and Austerlitz. Breakaway helped develop Sid Meier's Antietam and they bought the rights to the game engine to make W and A. There's a moribund site---Greatest Battles Forum---sponsored by Tapatalk which is still limping along (I've contributed relatively recent AAR's, Tips and Tricks, comments, etc.). Many links there are dead but some are still active.
I'm really enjoying the videos, I loved this game when I was younger. My question is how are you playing it? A download or the original disc? Modern computer? Cause now I want to play it again!!
Hello thehistoricalgamer! Been subscribed to your channel fro some time, great content to this day. I emailed your gmail about possibly making some co-creator content with the game Ultimate General: Gettysburg.

Oblique = you move diagonally but keep the formation facing the enemy to prevent exposing your flank

I’d love to see an update to this game. Similar to Total War series.
It would be shit. They'd make it woke with black generals, women cavalry, LGBT battalion, etc.
@bobmeyer854 chill tf out bruh 😂😂
Well you obviously haven’t heard of the famous NY battalion of tranz firemen…
Love this game and love this channel
Where and how do you enter the “cheats”?

How do you get this game to run. I still have my CD
My father who is now blind and I loved this game. How did you get it to run?!?!
Patch it.
Did you get it running ?
Would you consider streaming a multiplayer match with some of your Patrons? I'd like to see how two humans going head-to-head affect the gameplay.
And they just routed too, because they're basically all dead. That made me LOL
I'm really enjoying the videos, I loved this game when I was younger. My question is how are you playing it? A download or the original disc? Modern computer? Cause now I want to play it again!!
I have my original disk.
@@thehistoricalgamer on what system are you able to play it on? Years ago I tried it once on a laptop and it couldnt read it.
@@thehistoricalgamer me too 😂
Using the cheat was a good idea but you know that the generals provide morale to the troops
You should have an easier go with the Confederate campaign. You will be on the offensive and have way more flexibility.
You know you can also watch the battle by hitting replay scenario
Please don't use cheats. It removes challenge and sense of accomplishment from the game. Just my two centavos. Cheers!
Arrrrr.... I play this game for like 25 years. Never ever did I have 4 confederate batteries in this scenario , Is that already a cheat here ?

Sorry out of town and behind on emails. I’ll check it out in a few days when I’m back.
First again?
