This man was just trying to make her feel bad all along the interview, I can not believe how can somebody push so many painfull buttons in such a big artist heart. La Callas was and will always be an incredible woman, it was not just her voice, was her soul what made the world go crazy about her.
Wallace is quite rude with all the prodding and prodding about her personal life- embarrassing questions too! Ah well... But this is precisely why I just adore La Divina- she rolled with the punches. She is poised, and elegant, in this interview no matter how inane and mawkish Wallace was getting. She just rolled with the punches, and did so quite fearlessly. Others would have walked out. Right. But she is so candid, honest. E La Divina, noi vi amiamo per questo!
I think that if this Mr Wallace would be alive today he would be ashamed about the tone of this interview but I guess he is a good example of the society at that time that could not deal with a strong female artist with a terrific voice and a perfectionist that will be remembered forever. I am pretty sure that if this 'journalist' had a man to interview he would have asked about his art and his experiences being such a gifted singer. What a terrible waste of an opportunity to know about her art, the world of opera and how she could bring such strong emotions, colours to her singing. Instead we are left with a Petty, rude and disgraceful 'interview. Unforgivable!
Mike Wallace is petty and small minded in this interview. He didn’t get anything said but seemed to have pre conceived notion about her. He often twister her words and wanted to embarrass her. He was almost vicious. She composed herself well though.
@neiviaz I totally agree with you. She was : not only "THE VOICE", but "THE INTEPRETER" and since she appear opera style changed and opera was as never before. Olaig
Many want to slam Wallace for this interview. I personally, don't. He simply had the balls to ask her the tough questions. And as a devoted Callas fan, I applaud her responses. She was an excellent sport about it.
Is'nt it incredable that during the entire interview very little precious time was spent regarding Madame Callas and her future in music or acting and far to much medaling in personal/private affairs. Maria Callas like many artists made the world a more beautiful, exciting place for the relatively short time she was with us. We should have been more gratful/caring of this artist. It stands to reason that there are still two kinds of people, artists and assholes. Mike is the later.
@MrFalconford I am shocked how invasive the the questions were that mike wallace and barbara walters slammed Callas with and even more so by how agressivly they asked them. Can you imagine an interviewer talking like that to Aretha or Sinatra? There sure was a different standard. Even though I am not an imformed fan nor an expert on Callas I am quite impressed with her honesty, strength, wisdom. and grace. WOW!
@6:50 Actually that's NOT comprehensible at all. If he truly loved you he should have been supportive. He should have been happy for you that singing makes you happy. He was controlling. It's obvious she stopped singing for Onassis and she regrets it. So sad.
A real hatchet job done on an artist who should not have felt the need to defend herself. Her career said it all, regardless of what was going on in her personal and professional life at the time of this "interview." It's the same dickishness Wallace displayed with Streisand. And he never properly apologized for his laughable documentary on "The Homosexuals."
She hid her pain really well from this disgusting interviewer. She later died from a broken heart.. 😔 We know how hurt she was but she handled it with such dignity as it suits her..
Yes, sometimes journalists do probe too intrusively. Nevertheless, I'm sure this piece had to have been a boon to the ratings. I think we need to face it: it's the kind of junk we want to know, and this interview gave me great insight into the fascinating creature that was Callas.
BRAVO FALCON.....!!!!!!! WITH THE PRIVILEGE OF INTERVIEWING THE GREATEST OPERA SINGER AND PERFORMER AND CONSIDERING ALL THE ACHIEVMENTS THAT MADAME CALLAS GOT IN HER CARRIER WAS SO STUPID FROM THIS.........(not even worth it to mention!!!!) TO WASTED A DIVA'S TIME LIKE THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ciao Olaig
I COULD NOT AGREE MORE WITH YOU ABOUT IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS REALLY INSULTING TO INTERVIEW "" A MEGA WORLD STAR LIKE MRS. CALLAS"" ABOUT HER PERSONAL LIFE ,IT MADE ME REALLY UNGRY TO SEE AND HEARD THIS INTERVIEW ,IS LIKE THE ONLY THING THIS .......WAS TO GET MRS. CALLAS ,WHAT A SHAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE ONLY THING A CAN RESCUE FROM THIS INTERVIEW IS THE PATIENCE AND CLASS WITH WICH MRS. CALLAS MANAGED THIS AWFUL INTERVIEW ,SHE WAS,IS AND WILL ONE IF NOT THE GREATEST'S OPERA SINGERS AMEN
I’ve always admired Mike Wallace. But this interview was disrespectful and absolutely insulting. I remember another singer saying that, many times, the answers they give to these reporters are not “groundbreaking” enough. Hence they, prod and jab to see if they can make them have a reaction to write a “juicier” article. Really appalled by his intrusive and demeaning questioning.
Ho parlato troppo presto. Se vuoi puoi mandarmela a questo indirizzo : gialo3@fastwebnet.it. ciao Olaig
I love how Callas put him on his place without losing control.

I think he doesn't realize who is he talking to...how can he ask these questions?! He has no right to judge her
what an amazing and in touch woman, I love her frankness and honesty this weirdo is strange, the one interviewing

I don't get why this man had the need to be so damn rude to her, my god.

Because according to her nature, she was always ready to accept any challange and she was used to win, almost ever. Olaig
