    Am I on the path to smaller foils?
    How would I know if I was? and what is a smaller foil? does it depend on the size of the rider or board or activity?
    They are kind of tongue in cheek questions. I think I respect the use of small foils when they are utilized. It's hard for me to really know what I think, because I so rarely use them.
    Using a small foil, whatever size that is for you. Currently this seems quite difficult to me. That's with the sort of conditions im often faced with. I don't get to see long period swells just about ever... and only occasionally am I in bumps that are by themselves over my head, stacked yes but not as stand alone waves. I can only really talk about small foils" from my current perspective.
    I don't like having to pump and I've found small foils cause me to have to pump. That might just be my inexperience, and fear of not knowing the stall speeds. What I end up experiencing is a foil that sinks under foot. I feel like I can barely weight it or else it goes down... I am starting to suspect that my recent gains in my stance could help here.
    I had a light day winging recently, not that last video, another one where I eventually made it to the reef at 3km out. It was very touch and go winging out even with the 1401 artpro.
    I learned a lot on that wing out. I started to really load up my front foot, so much so that when I put my weight on it, the board wouldn't pitch forward. If I weighted it, the board would somewhat go down but when doesn't a foil go down when weighting it? If I needed to pitch the front down quickly due to cresting over a wave, I'd have to lift my back leg, or leaning over my front leg might have also given me just a bit of pitch.
    Why did I do this? well its a part of my stance journey, I need to experience all possibilities to understand what's available and increasing the loading through my front foot is currently the direction im headed in. Anyway i'll try to finish a point... It really helped me in the light wind, I suspect it's due to removing unnecessary forward pitching. I was really scraping the energy barrel to keep flight on this one, so I noticed any gain in efficiency. I now had a way to weight the system that wasn't causing pitch change, and I could rest my poor over used rear leg, hallelujah.
    Imagine having good mast height and forward speed and you pretty much pitch/crash the front down to the water, what has that done for you? nothing good, you likely gained unwanted speed
    We can very easily waste energy when riding with wing or paddle. It can all vanish in an instant (and often does when trying to pump) now imagine you pick the best, level, trim line you can so you are losing absolute minimum height or speed and maximizing glide. This is your goal! for all foiling just all sports! efficiency. It's what separates an expert from a beginner.
    I was now flying level, I wasn't even pinching up wind which is my usual, because there wasn't enough energy to keep height if I even leaned a little, so had to just fly level with maximum speed, claiming chunks of upwind whenever available.
    I think this is also needed for small foils! I got somewhere... I think I might get away with a size down now with my recent stance gains! and im looking forward, still with some reservations, to trying it.
    be good

    I don't love spanny foils but I will be using a parawing all winter with a wider board so that may change my opinion. In a previous video you mentioned having more leverage with a wider board so that may be what I'm looking for.

      Yea a slightly wider board can be less fatiguing. I held a parawing the other day! I was pleasantly surprised by my reaction to it... I didn't have much of an opinion leading up to it. I found it quite alluring and not the gimme that I was partially expecting.
      What parawing have you got?

      I do. Im wondering if it's because I just don't know any better... Im going to try get to the bottom of it though.
      I'm at such an exciting stage of foiling, where I can start to explore more ideas and having a good starting knowledge to place the information accordingly... There are a lot of full circles happening 🤙🤙

    As someone who foils on inland lakes where fetch is really limited I love glide and spanny foils. Small bumps means the search for efficiency so I’ve got used to turning big foils and can now quite happily turn the 1201 on a tight radius (my go to foil for balance between glide and turning) with a wingtip out.

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  12 часов назад +1

      Have you tried the 1180 spitfire in those conditions? it also works very well in slower bump but needs to be ridden more efficiently than the 1201, mostly just by finishing high after turns, and generally riding high in the water column.
      Ive only foiled in fresh water once! How much fetch do you have?

    • @toms74094ts
      @toms74094ts 10 часов назад +1

      @@downwind_drifter I’ve not tried the 1180 simply from being limited in how many foils I buy. I’m waiting for the 1300 v2 to come to the uk and then will test that the 1180 and 1401 to try and get more bottom end. My local spot is very limited in fetch 2km in our predominant S/SWdirection and 3km in a N direction. I can still make it work though and managed 1km on foil in the bumps yesterday without coming off foil(we had a big Southerly storm).

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  9 часов назад +2

      @@toms74094ts yes that’s very much lower end fetch. I have something similar in NZ when riding offshores along the peninsula. 4km fetch is when the bumps here start to feel good when it’s 15-16 kts. We have lower fetch spots too that only work when it’s closer to 25kts.
      It will be interesting to hear what works best for your situation. I’m imagining the 1180 will be fun when it blasts for you but that might be too few and far between.
      The 1300v2 could be the one for general success.

    great video, I hope these proto's all make it to market. There's still the one you had a few months ago that I'm hoping comes out soon.
    Definitely a fan of spanny wings for DW runs but there is a point where either it's too spanny or the swell period is too tight and you can feel the wing tips getting pushed around. That was my only real complaint with the old png 1300 riding it in the gorge.

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  12 часов назад +1

      This one I believe is still being refined, the goal is to get it into production!
      The one from a few months back I believe has been improved upon and will be re tested.
      I tried another proto just recently, that had a big span but it turned freely despite it... truly amazing. You would never think to use the old 1300 again. The gorge would be fun with the spitfires! even the 1180.

    Have ridden the Kuji 1095 with a Pedigo tail a lot, very loose set up. Love it but switching from other foils I have to get used to it every single time. That said when conditions demand more control, I rather take my 720S..
