I had the chance to visit Heera Mandi in 1993, and at that time, there were still "kothas" and "tawaifs" present. However, things have changed since then, and now everything has spread throughout Lahore. Sanjay Leela Bhansali accurately depicted the true essence of Heera Mandi, a place where people once came to learn "tameez" (etiquette) and "art."

Thank you for showing us the present area of what was Heeramandi. Yes, Shri Sanjay Leela Bhansali has glamorized it, but we need to understand that art is free and imagination has no boundaries. Fiction is bound to be a part of history in the making of drama/ film.
Let us not forget that most of us enjoyed what we watched. At least Sanjayji showed us a glimpse of the yester years with a kaleidoscope.

Problem of you people is - can’t digest criticism. How many of you have read books about Heeramandi? None, right? But you all have watched the series. If it was not for this video, you would have always thought how grand Heeramandi was! Not everyone, who watches movies, does validate the fact, but always remembers the way it was shown in the movie. You have to give some credit to the makers of Heeramandi and the beautiful studio sets of a time and people in the past... it has sparked a conversation to know what the real lives and places actually were. It has driven a desire to know and offers respect to the place and the people who once lived there and made contribution to independence by sheltering freedom fighters, and didn't worry about losing their honour in society. 😮 They lived and died in emotional pain without any honour, no rights in society nor respect in their lifetime but the braveheart women gave up their lives in an instant for the country by sheltering freedom fighters. Shahid for freedom they never had! ❤
That concept was just based on that heeramandi...the whole story is fictional plus non fictional! They never said its a documentary series ! Anyways must watch that ! Amazing series ❤❤

only Mughals, courtesans not common citizens.
before islamic invasions they were not prostitute but they were masters in art forms like music, dancing etc things. and they used to perform at temples and at royal events. it was islamic invaders who forced them to go into prostitution by looting temples destroying their livelihood and lot of other things. so both got mixed at that time. freedom of women under islamic invasion has been highly impacted. whole indian subcontinent was very different before it and women have enjoyed lot of freedom which is visible when one read old hindu scriptures and visit ancient temples. moreover SLB told it is not fully fact based story but things has been taken from facts to make series. it is visually good series but story line is very weak. and BBC here is expert in doing subtle propaganda which they are doing here.

Heeramandi portrayed in the season is before independence....and that was totally different what you supposed in the current senario or after partition....
It is also true that people were sent thier to learn etiquettes, Art and poetry or dance....heera mandi portray in sanje Lila's season was a little lavish but culture portrayed in the season was almost same....people are sent there to learn language as well....
Slowly there was a downfall of that culture as in Islam there is no place for these kind of activities openly......having said that overall season was good and worth seeing if u watch it only for drama and for entaintainment purpose not watch it as documentary or historical event....

My grand grand nani told me about the story of partition. She was so old and she saw everyone's struggle behind azadi. She told me about heeramandi and tawaif. She told me they are just an artist nothing else, they used to teach tehzib to nawab's sons take unme aur angrezo me frq rahe. Jb angrez ae tw unhn ne inhe whore bana diya..
Heeramandi is very beautifully directed and presented. The place and buildings are also similar as pictured in film. It just the idea SLB sahab took from this place. He is not changing any history he gave the good sights of this place, people and specially the rebellious change to get freedom from west.

This means that Pakeeza, a 1970s movie (first 30 minutes) when Nawab Shahabuddin (Ashok Kumar) comes looking for his daughter , his love child with a courtesan (Meena Kumari) had although a studio set, a more accurate depiction of the tight streets, small homes with beautifully decorated interiors for Nawabs' entertainment and indulgences , as this resident describes, compared to Sanjay Leela Bansali's over the top portrayal in Heeramandi.

Tawaif in actual, was not a jisam farosh. She was considered the epitome of art and beauty. Performing art as well as language n literature was their landmarks. After colonization gora made them do this filthy business to keep the locals busy and let them do their business plus they were used by goras as they didn't have enough choice to meet their physical needs. 2nd thing is heera Mandi got vanished after Zia's reign as he banned prostitution so a business which was limited to heera Mandi spread all over the Lahore as those prostitute's moved around different areas of lahore.

It was a Royal or Elite Area even during Raja Ranjit Singh. Only Nawabs, Landlords could afford to enjoy dances of "Fankaars" aka Artists. Shahi Darbar (Royal Palace) had bestowed them with monthly or annual stipend. This Shahi Muhalla (The Elite Society) ruined during Abdali's attack but reinstated. Minister of Lahore Darbar, Heera Singh founded a trade center here which became Heera Mandi after his name. When British occupied this city, Tawaif or Artists became Prostitutes in real sense. The Shahi Muhalla aka the Royal Residential Area became Red Light Area officially. During Zia Era, prostitutes migrated to different locations/ housing societies within or outside of Lahore.

I don't know about the most of tawaif things neither I'll discuss this but I think government should work for the recreation of these beautiful buildings which represents the beautiful mughal era architectures and the historical buildings of Lahore.
