Poonal is a symbolic representation that someone is doing or involved in important roles. Artists wear it, goldsmiths, sculptors, musicians, traders and people involved in commerce. When you get promoted you will get a status to wear the sacred thread. Like a degree distinguishes between illiterate and a literate. The intention was for good reason. Way it was misused is wrong.
