The big ask going forward in realignment collapses down to two basic questions: (1) how’s your football, and (2) how many football viewers do you bring? By those metrics, ND and FSU are by far the biggest gets left. Everyone else lands somewhere (or stays put) as an afterthought.
Getting the state of Florida would be HUGE for recruiting and tv viewership… it would be a coup for the BIG10 and would make them the truly National conference. FSU is one of the most watched and popular teams in the nation!
Even after all the sh*t that has gone down between ESPN, the SEC and FSU, I still believe that the SEC will not allow that to happen. However I'm sure you've heard by a million times now FSU fans just want OUT of the ACC. Most have switched their opinions to wanting to join the Big ten, however, before The Snub our fan base was predominantly in favor of the SEC. It's going to be extremely interesting to see how it all plays out.
@@jamesb0255 Unfortunately ESPN doesn't have a contract with FSU directly, so they can't even legally negotiate with them directly. ESPN only has a TV contract to televise the ACC's home games. So they can only negotiate with ACC Administrators. All this nonsense of ESPN swapping teams out of the ACC to the SEC isn't legal.
I think the espn/sec relationship may cause a bidding war and it's going to come down to who ever gives the the most tv revenue percentage as close to a full share as possible
@@woodybortner5583 Probably, but the B1G has a monopoly over the AAU. So the only way FSU gets voted in to receive their AAU membership is if they join the B1G. Then they would qualify for Billions is shared research grant revenue and give them superior financial security that the SEC cannot offer.
Do you really want Miami? A team that could not even compete for an ACC championship? In 20 years they won a division once and then got smoked by Clemson in the championship game. Miami is all about fun in the sun, going to the beach, boating, fishing, scuba and various other water sports and activities. Football is far down the list for the Miami-Dade area. As a Dolphins fan I know this all too well. Every other year hard rock becomes Doak Campbell South 😂😂. We always have more fans there than hurricane fans. Y'all don't want Miami, trust me.
Markets? Old school thinking on getting into TV markets is dated with cord cutting. You have to look at appeal and brand. If you follow the trend lines to determine long term planning, you have to project how individuals will choose what packages to subscribe to. ESPN will eventually care less about negotiating cable deals and more about who subscribes to apps. FSU and Notre Dame hold most promise in the future. Miami's TV market matters little long term ... who's following them nationally? Even can ask who's following them in Miami (seen how empty their stadium is on game day when it isn't FSU?).
Maybe... But who makes the ~48-team cut matters as does where they land. FSU is likely already at peak athletic success/value as of today and immediately after the Tier 1 separation. Outside of continued growth in the State of FL and the effects of SEC vs. B1G, FSU is near ceiling. FSU is likely worth more in the SEC than the B1G, but the SEC likely sees more worth to be captured elsewhere.
No way under any circumstance should Miami be ahead of Clemson…the other 3 are debatable not Miami….i think notre dame Clemson FSU and UNC are all attractive brands for any league.
@@davidsmith8278 Why not? This is a 50 year decision based on other variables. There's zero evidence Clemson will be good after Dabo. They're starting to show signs of fading now. Clemson isn't a fit culturally, academically, geographically, or offer value in any other sport. Unlike Miami, it's not a travel destination for B1G fans and doesn't have a large concentration of alums who live in South Carolina.
Virginia Tech makes much more sense for the Big10 than UVa. They have won 18 of their past 19 football games against UVa (the most lopsided rivalry in sports) and are academically ranked above 7 schools in the Big10, including Penn State. The DC area cares much more about Hokie football than Maryland football.
As a reminder, VATECH has never won a natty in a team sport sponsored by the NCAA. Schools like VATECH need to learn to argue that they should be invited "in addition to" rather than "instead of".
@@tarheel7406 You clearly value women's lacrosse and soccer, etc more than folks at Virginia Tech do. But we've been in the top 25 in many sports this year - wrestling, baseball, softball, women's basketball, etc. The total sports program is well above average. But my understanding is that this is all about football. BTW, I went to grad school at UNC and cheer for the Heels as well. But you'll never hear me brag about UNCs little sister sports. That's a joke.
@@frankpotter5936 a) Generally, the more prestigious (upper right) schools and the best athletic departments value overall sports. The 2 revenue sports are obviously important, but VATECH hasn't won a natty there either. b) This isn't all about football. c) Being a "joke" is why VATECH is less interesting. VATECH (and NCSTATE) are similar to MICHST. That's your angle to make the ~48-team cut in addition to UVA.
@@tarheel7406 Virginia Tech has more 10-win football seasons than Michigan St and NC State combined, but yes, they're in the same general boat. Virginia Tech is also ranked higher academically than either of those schools. Yup, schools and fans who brag about their trophies in left-handed women's Tiddlywinks are a joke. It's like bragging about the school's theater department.
@@tarheel7406 Virginia Tech spent most of its history as a military institution and the alumni put more emphasis on beating VMI and the Citadel than they did major college sports teams. This lasted well in to the 1980s. With that said, Virginia Tech is tied for the most Media of Honor winners from a public institution (more than any school in the Big10). I'll take that over all of the minor sports trophies combined.
I 💯 disagree that academics do not matter now. They are still a big component of picking schools to join the BIG10. Nebraska was an AAU member when it joined the BIG10 but lost their membership in 2011 for several reasons too detailed to get into here but is now looking to rejoin the AAU in the near future. FSU has been pushing to become an AAU member but was recently overlooked in favor of Miami & USF.
Florida State and either ND or UNC. This brings the Big 10 to 20 teams, which seems like a natural number of teams. Clemson has all of the makings of being Nebraska 2.0 and is 120 miles from Atlanta. Miami doesn't fit culturally and it is 20 years removed from being nationally relevant in football. If the Big 10 somehow ends up at 24 teams: either ND or UNC, Clemson, Miami, and UVA. There is no way for all the marquee brands to go 10-2 every year, but you need teams to lose games - go with the teams that will bring the most eyeballs in terms of market, alumni base, and fan base. Georgia Tech would be the next one up if ND continues its independence.
Fl St is coveted more (from an expansion point of discussion) than N Carolina and Duke as a pair and Miami and Clamson?? I'd say Fl St is beneath all of them. I'd include Virginia and G Tech from a tv market/revenue sharing argument, as well
I cannot get my head around the following logic: Argument Part 1: BC and GT are in big market BUT - Football drives the bus here and these two have been "really bad for a really long time" (Never mind GT won the conference not that long ago and won the Orange Bowl not that long ago, but let's stipulate that they've been bad for a long time). Argument Part 2 - UVa is in my second tier! What?!! I thought Football drives the bus. By any measure imaginable UVa has been far worse for far longer than either GT or BC. Their "market" certainly isn't more valuable than ATL or BOS. Uva to the B1G above several other schools is jut non-sensical.
GT won the Orange Bowl but nobody remembers it because it was completely overshadowed by the CFI. FSU has as many fans in GA as GT, if not more. GT is that unpopular. UGA runs the state and like Atlanta with GT, very few in Boston care about BC. Otherwise they'd already be suing to be in a better conference.
If players receive NIL money and they start getting a share of. Conference money (an idea being put forward) then they should pay for their schooling with no scholarship money.
My uninformed hot takes: 1) I think the B1G will create pods based on regions. 2) eventually, all pod champions go on to the CFP with no B1G championship game. 3) Notre Dame only joins B1G after ACC implodes and they have nowhere for Olympic sports to compete. They force B1G to take Stanford at the same time. 4) Pods are made of 5 teams each. Southern pod is FSU, Miami, NC, UVA and either Duke or GA Tech. 5) If NCAA does cease to exist, it opens up expanded revenue for the basketball tournament so basketball will matter more. 6) TX A&M joins the B1G.
UNC is now heavily leaning SEC if not committed. Doubtful any Tier 1 takes DUKE sans UNC. I've been predicting a ~24 each P2 sub-divided into 3 or 4 divisions since ~Day 2. If UNC is unavailable and DUKE is then unwanted, I am interested in your adjusted "southern pod".
@@tarheel7406 If that were the case, perhaps it is FSU, Miami, UVA, GA Tech, with MD joining. I don’t see NC State, Wake or VA Tech as options for the B1G. The real question is what value the TV networks place on various programs - the answer to that question will influence which schools get taken.
@@Gh0stRider I see that as feasible. Beating the SEC to UVA will be a B1G victory and mitigates the losses of settling on the #2s FSU and GATECH. Getting UVA is more important than it would appear on the surface.

Nebraska held AAU acceditation when they joined the Big Ten. They lost AAU due to a technical reason the Medical Center used for the Nebraska Medical School! is located in Omaha 60 miles from the UNL Campus. Closing the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha does not make sense. It would be too expensive!
NEB was already in the process of being expelled by the AAU when it was invited to the B1G. NEB was and remains a de facto AAU exception, which are case specific by definition.
Love to see the majority of BIG see the value of AAU Miami, the South FL TV market, great away trips, recruiting, and the BIG taking over FL from the SEC! If the BIG takes FSU/Miami that’s a heist of epic proportions going into SEC territory. As for fan support… Miami draws 55k in mediocre years. Hard Rock seats 65k so 10k BIG fans would help pack the house easily. The Miami OSU, Wisconsin games were packed. Mich St (55k). I love BIG alums…some of my best friends and colleagues…it would be an epic away trip for fans. Tailgate scene is lit with everything from Southern, Latin American to Caribbean, to the mornings catch from the deep sea charter docks on the way to the games. Grilled lobsters. stone crabs. Cmon BIG alums…take us with FSU and kick the SEC in the nuts.
I think they may take Miami instead of FSU. AAU membership and bigger TV market would be determining factors. The Big 10 will probably only take 1 school from Florida as 2 schools wouldn't really bring a lot of extra value. Same reason why even though Pitt would make a lot of sense for the Big 10 it will never happen because they already have a footprint in Pennsylvania
Miami have been lousy in football in recent years, their stadium for some games are less than half full, their ratings at times are worst than the top G5 brands, and they have been passed by UCF as the number 3 team in Florida. USF is also AAU as well.
I'm a B1G fan and you have nothing to back that ridiculous statement. 75% of the B1G schools better tighten their belts and improve their product on the field.
Huh? The B1G had already dropped down to #3 in top-level competitiveness coming into this realignment, and I expect that trend to continue. A B1G island in Florida would be neutered,
@jojowhite9296 Two teams account for 90% of the SECs NC in the last 25 years yet the SEC is crowned the dominant conference but if two or three big ten teams take over the land scape that some how doesn't make it the dominant conference? Market size should not matter. I am a FSU alumni living in DC. Neighbors and coworkers are UVA, VT, GT, Duke, NC state, Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan etc. of all those listed, GT and Duke are the only grads I know not interested in football. In fact, the Duke alumni didn’t even know Elko was coach and did well and then left for Texas A and M. Free FSU! Go B1G!
First, you need to be reminded that medical and scientific research grants to Big Ten schools total 10 TIMES football revenue annually. With that in mind; 1 - Pitt. 2 - Notre Dame 3 - UVA 4 - UNC.

Let the SEC have new territory in Virginia & North Carolina. Give the B1G FSU, CLEMSON & MIAMI leaving ND to come in as #22. Divisions are not needed. Play 2 OOC games and then play a 9 game conference schedule. Then play a seeded B1G Championship weekend. Play the 4 top teams to determine the two top B1G teams. The same day play by seeding the remaining schools. Play them on FOX, CBS, NBC and on the BTN. Then the two top teams will play the following week at the B1G CCG. The B1G network media deal will see money roll in like a printing press.
Problem with that is only adding Florida State, Miami and Clemson would leave the Bigten with an odd number of schools. Need an even amount of schools to have that seeded last game. Have to be an even number of schools. Can't count on or wait for Notre Dame.
a) ND may be too entangled to move under your scenario. b) The SEC will eagerly cede CLEMSON, FSU & MIAMI to secure UVA & UNC. c) As things stand, CLEMSON is committed to the SEC, and I doubt B1G interest in same anyway.
@@tarheel7406 Actually CLEMSON isn't committed to the SEC. Some may think that, but things aren't as they think. The state of Florida & CLEMSON who has a huge draw throughout SC, GA & NC is huge. ODD numbers are fine without divisions and if those three do come, then 24 is the B1G goal, we shall see.
@@johnny99late The B1G will have that last even number team. It appears that UNC & NC State may be tied at the hip. The bigger, largest fan base in VA is by far VA TECH which fits the SEC profile to a tee. The real money to be made is actually in Research. The B1G brings in more research money than the SEC, ACC & IVY combined. Either way, the B1G will surely get FSU & MIAMI.
@@SOGWAP56 CLEMSON has low brand inertia and I see no interest from the B1G. CLEMSON is wise and knows that an SEC schedule is far better during down years than in the B1G. CLEMSON has allied with UNC for a coattail. The 2 are now ~100% to SEC once UNC is free to move.
There are three major available schools left since we lost out on Texas and A@M to B1G rumors are made up. These include: Notre Dame, FSU and UNC in that order. Each is strong enough to bring a dance partner. ND is going to most likely affiliate but stay independent through next cycle for next 10-20 years. Eventually to Big Ten and maybe brings Stanford as a dance partner and guaranteed easy yearly win. So that brings FSU and UNC plus some second tier options (Clemson, Miami). I think FSU is coming. So who do they bring? Clemson or Miami. I think they get to choose. For UNC - who do they bring? Big Ten would prefer Virginia. But maybe UNC wants Kansas?
All this said, I think SEC wants UNC and Virginia also. They want football cream puffs with good brands and basketball strength. I see them capping at 20. Im guessing their ideal schools> UNC, Virginia, Kansas and some sort of dance partner
The university lost its Association of American Universities membership in 2011, primarily for two reasons: its medical school is at the Omaha campus, not the flagship Lincoln campus; and it focuses heavily on agriculture research, which is not weighted as heavily in the AAU's eyes.
Have to laugh at your comment GT is a horrible football team. We went through a 3 year period with the worst coach in college football history Geoff Collins. GT is on its way back up and has more tradition and success than most of the teams in the Big 10. Do some research before spouting out nonsense.
@@LockedOnBIG10 GATECH has been vetted and was a target during the expansion that ended with UMD/RUT. UVA/UNC rejected the B1G, and TECH's appeal was contingent on those accepting. GATECH is again in the mix.
Lately slumping Clemson is the only ACC Football program who has consistently beaten the top B1G schools and Notre Dame. Clemson is tracking to AAU status. FSU brings Florida, UNC and Miami are viable. UNC and NCSU are a package.
Duke over Miami(FL) easily, but in reality NEITHER. If we are just looking at ACC teams - ND, FSU, UNC, VA, and Stanford. FSU has grown on my the more I hear about the arguments. As a Northwestern alumnus I was against Stanford, but I think long-term they are a great academic, research, and historical fit. Having 5 western teams plus Nebraska might make a good division. Put FSU, UNC, VA, Rutgers, Maryland, and PSU in an eastern division. That leaves the 10 originals plus ND to be divided into a 2 divisions. I can't think of an appropriate 12th midwestern school. If we take Utah we can throw Nebraska back into the midwest pair of divisions.
FSU is poison, UMD is apathetic. Not interesting while the SEC is already full of natural rivals, hence UNC is now likely already committed to the SEC. Replace UNC with either GATECH or MIAMI.
Football may steal the headlines, but AAU research brings in more money than all of college football and college basketball combined. AAU Academics has to be a factor in school President's eyes.
This is off topic, but your arrangement of your background pennants are driving me crazy. OR and WA are the newest additions to the conference and are top left, and UCLA & USC were added just before OR & WA and are bottom left. Following that logic, MD & Rutgers should be where Northwestern & PSU are currently located, PSU replaces where Rutgers is currently located, and MSU replaces Indiana. Thanks! #OCD
Louisville makes more sense for B10 than Miami LOL. The Louisville campus is literally in the heart of Big 10 country and close to IU, Purdue, Illinois and Ohio State
FSU, Miami, UVA, UNC, Stanford and Notre Dame. Nom, nom, nom. Let's get to 24. If it was up to me, there would be four divisions, 11 conference games, and a conference semifinal. Groups of six with three protected rivalries (one per each of the other pods) and three rotating games. The pods shouldn't be super tight with geography, because that isn't the best thing for rivalries or marketability or travel. Coastal schools should group up in twos and threes along with three or four schools closer to the center of the country. That way, coastal schools can always have a protected rival that isn't on the complete opposite coast. Here's an example of one pod. USC, UCLA, Stanford, Notre Dame, UM, tOSU. They play each other every year. Notre Dame probably schedules a protected rivalry with either UW or Oregon, and they probably get Penn St and FSU as their other protected rivals. UM and tOSU obviously want some of these high profile matchups as well, but the west coast is not looking to the east coast for any annual meeting. UW and Oregon probably schedule protected rivalries against California schools and some schools in the middle of the country. That type of thing. At the end of the day, it's technically true that FSU Miami UVA and UNC wind up in the same conference as a bunch of Cali schools plus Oregon and UW. That's weird, but we can arrange for them to play against each other once every 5 years (unless they meet in a conference playoff) and the burden of travel only happens once every 10 years. I swear to you, if you make a special point of Super minimizing the coast to coast travel, this becomes very manageable.
GT is not a historically bad team. They are a historically good team, do not let the worst coach in history of CFB they just fired cloud your judgment. They hired a real coach and are looking much better. Big10 isn't passing on planting a flag in Atlanta and Georgia.
Wow... someone who actually understands realignment and isnt throwing out Duke, GT and Pitt. Only 1 slight disagreement. I think UNC is third behind FSU and ND, but you have a valid point of view.
UNC is the top B1G target outside of ND, but UNC has picked the SEC as things stand. In a "perfect", a UVA/UNC package would be ahead of FSU, but UVA loses alot of attraction alone.
They all go BIG 10 or independent. I just can't see any of the magnificent 7 jumping out of one ESPN lockdown just to jump into another. So eSECpn. Or Big 12 are out of the question.
Professionals know that this is just business. ESPN has a great deal and has yet to be offered enough incentives to renegotiate high enough. ESPN may not even be in the financial position even if willing. Conferences can and do change broadcast partners anyway. I see the SEC getting the ACC schools it really wants, even those the B1G also pursues. UVA is the only likely exception.
The Big Ten added Rutgers to get the NY TV market. Rutgers. Rutgers! BC is arguably better than Rutgers historically. Boston is a huge market with a lot of Big Ten alums (I know so many Michigan alums in Boston that it’s obscene!) I admit it’s odd but it’s precedented. Rutgers!
I agree no one seems to understand that this is about TV markets and not about whether a school is a football powerhouse. That's why Boston College and even Colorado makes sense. Also there's no way the Big 10 takes both Miami and Florida State. That wouldn't offer any extra value to the conference
Why doesn’t Louisville get any love from the BIG? Basketball elite. And respectable football. I think 32 team Big and 32 team SEC is how everything ultimately shakes out.
Unfortunately, Louisville has been among the ringleaders of the programs subverting teams from leaving at all. If you choose the side of those wishing to stay, you probably aren’t leaving. Great program, but they make their own choices
Doesn't add enough value because they don't offer a footprint that the Big 10 wants or needs. They want the biggest TV markets especially the ones they aren't in yet like Florida and Atlanta.
Take Florida State and Notre Dame, maybe Virginia and North Carolina. Pass on Clemson and Miami. BTW, the AAU requirement is NOT going away. Yes, it's all about money, and for that very reason, the Big Ten will only take AAU schools due to the millions in grant and research money associated with them. The college football world is shaping up to be Big Ten vs. SEC. The Big Ten is vastly superior to the SEC in academics (with noted exceptions such as Vanderbilt, Texas, and Florida), and will want to maintain that status.
a) FSU isn't AAU and I suspect may not get invited anytime soon. b) How can ND leave the ACC prior to ~2036? c) UNC is now leaning heavy SEC if not already committed. d) If not paired with UNC, is UVA still a higher priority target?

KANSAS is a higher-level bubble team that could be skirmished over but isn't really that crucial relative to other schools in play.

GT would only be good because of Georgia in that they get access to recruiting grounds which the B1G is kind of dry on. The life blood of a program is recruiting so would be easier to get Georgia kids and pair that with Florida then it can make sense long term. GT should be better but they are an indictment of the ACC and their mismanagement.
I lived 40 miles north of Boston during the Flutie era and even then, BC interest was not too much. Boston is more into professional sports, same as NYC.
ND, UNC, UVA, FSU, ??? a) The SEC also wants UNC and UVA, so that's a 4x win. b) Winning the fight over UVA/UNC also mitigates the look of having to also take #2s like FSU & GATECH. Regardless, ND isn't available unless the ACC heavily depletes out, and UNC is going SEC. Given that, it's likely just FSU, MIAMI.
I’ll tell you what. I wouldn’t want anything to do with espn and Disney right now. The BIG is in better position with fox. Disney is hemorrhaging money. They are in bad shape financially.
None of them. The Big 10 doesin't have ESPN. If Texas and Oklahoma have to go from the Big 12 to the SEC because both conferences have ESPN, then so would these schools. UT and OU are much bigger gets than anyone in the ACC. Theyc an leave the ACC but not ESPN.
If no team adds any financial gain to the B1G, I don't see any getting into the SEC or B1G. They may have to settle for the Big 12. AS far as getting access into Florida for recruiting? Ohio State does pretty good recruiting the whole southeast and Texas. The rest of the B1G has their specialty areas (Oregon is big in SoCal) or simply have no real interest on becoming competent in football.
Oregon is an AAU school with top faculty including Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners. Their research is top notch as are their graduate programs. Oregon is #1 among AAU schools in licensing/research dollar spent, one metric used to measure the quality of research done. They just opened the first half of a billion dollar research institute in Eugene and a half billion additional branch campus in Portland. Research done at at these insitutions have resulted in 32 new start-up companies resulting in rewards for the state for innovation and entrerpreneurship, and Oregon adds 2.6 billion/year the state's economy. I could go on but I won't belabor the point. Suffice it to say that Big 10 Presidents know these facts and more; the AAU University of Oregon was vetted and unanimously voted into the BIG 10.

The B1G is unreasonably hostile to AAU invites for southern schools and has harmed the integrity of the AAU more by protecting OREGON. The B1G also likely pushed for the unworthy invites of both MIAMI and ND. One of the several reasons UNC should go SEC rather than B1G.
As I noted, Oregon has recently opened the first half of a new billion dollat research center in Eugene and another half billion one in Portland and in about a year since the openings last year, they have drastically raised the numbers since your old data from 2021 (which weren't correct to begin with) and those numbers will only increase as those facilities and research developes. They had a medical school in Portland (UO Medical School) which the legislature, in its infinite wisdom, made private (now called OHSU). That school is now solidly connected to Oregon as staff members travel between the two schools each year and collaborate on research. That school generates about 200-300 million in research/year so expect an even greater level of research through collaborative research. Oregon is a top 100 school according to U.S. News and World Reports and is climbing the ranks quickly. The BIG 10 knows all this and more...fortunately.

The MARYLAND board reeks of apathy and the school is now viewed as an old BIGEAST type. The P5 remainders and G5s should consider an amicable realignment into smaller regionals, including a new BIGEAST (ignoring the name's current use). Perhaps MARYLAND should relegate itself down?
@@tarheel7406 You're funny. 3rd most Bigten Championships in all sports since joining. Top 20 public institution. 1 of 2 schools to have a Football, M Basketball and W Basketball Championship. I could keep going....
@@crabcakesandfootball4619 Actually, I was half kidding, but only half. MARYLAND seems disrespected and unwanted by the B1G fans in general, MARYLAND has no rivals (per its own message board), and almost all of the "what if" broader realignment suggestions have MARYLAND in a new BIGEAST rather than in the B1G or ACC. With such a level of apathy, inside and outside perception, etc., why not relegate football down and concentrate on other things?
@@tarheel7406The relegation debate is dangerous. No team deserves to be relegated. It would have to take beyond embarrassing records in every sport. Maryland football is getting better even after being down because of horrible leadership, a player dying, COVID and restructuring. It's not much yet but 3 winning seasons in a row and staying out of the cellar is huge. As for rivals we have plenty. WEST VIRGINIA, VIRGINIA, NC STATE, NAVY, CLEMSON and others. @@crabcakesandfootball4619 a) I said nothing related to "deserves"; I asked about a voluntary decision. b) The vast general consensus on the MARYLAND 247 board is that MARYLAND had no football rivals in the ACC and have no football or basketball rivals in the B1G. In fact, I find the MARYLAND experience very interesting and have really tried to flesh it out, but the apathy and denial is a barrier. In short, its left vs. stayed. In other words, better to be richer but apathetic vs. less rich but engaged. Perhaps losing either way. For what is MARYLAND playing when the fanbase is so apathetic?
BigTen not even all world conferences. Just because Fox decided to waste millions of dollars to a pathetic slow football conference like the BigTen. Two good teams and rest might as well play in the little sissy schools for the poor
First, to state that AAU will not matter for the B1G is asinine. The AAU schools getting Government $$$$ for research is huge, like billions of $$$$. If a B1G school is an AAU member, they share research between member schools. Nebraska is trying to incorporate the University of Nebraska at Omaha into the University Nebraska at Lincoln system to regain their AAU status. I would take GaTech for the footprint into GA and their AAU affiliation. Say what you want, but education and research are what's more important to college presidents.
Research may be shared but grants are not at the conference level. Sharing research does not require being in the same conference. If Sharing research was so lucrative, it would have been done elsewhere.
Florida State. No Clemson. No Miami. No Notre Dame Yes UNC. Yes UVA. Yes PS: Ohio State already recruits Florida. We don't need to bring their sorry ass teams into our conference.
@@ChrisSadowski-pp1np FSU is not the flagship school in the state of Florida. UF is. As for ND, I really don't care what they do, but the B1G shouldn't be a half-way house for disgruntled schools in lousy conferences.

What are you talking about. The SEC started this with Texas and Oklahoma. ESPN being involved with both conferences or in reality Disney, they are the ones that destroyed college football if anyone did
I strongly believe that the Big Ten and the TV executives won to make sure the Big Ten is in enough big states like Utah, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida to make their next TV contract good and a lot of the schools that I’m talking about that might be low value or maybe get 60% of the actual deal

Notre Dame and Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh. Natural rivalry with Penn State. Huge money making game
I could see Pitt going to the big 12
I 💯 disagree that academics do not matter now. They are still a big component of picking schools to join the BIG10. Nebraska was an AAU member when it joined the BIG10 but lost their membership in 2011 for several reasons too detailed to get into here but is now looking to rejoin the AAU in the near future. FSU has been pushing to become an AAU member but was recently overlooked in favor of Miami & USF.
Nebraska lost it on what they consider. Technicality. They just put the former head of the University of Nebraska medical center in as president.
Notre Dame and Miami just made AAU last June.
I think Nebraska (Lincoln) is trying to bring Nebraska (Omaha) under their leadership to get the AAU qualifications back.
I think you are absolutely correct. FSU & ND will be the adds.
How and when with ND?
Georgia Tech would be the next one up if ND continues its independence.
a) UNC is now unavailable to the B1G; ND won't and likely can't leave the ACC if only FSU+1.
b) The proposed to 24 B1G is more feasible.
Fl St is coveted more (from an expansion point of discussion) than N Carolina and Duke as a pair and Miami and Clamson?? I'd say Fl St is beneath all of them. I'd include Virginia and G Tech from a tv market/revenue sharing argument, as well
Agreed... FSU is an expansion target but behind UNC (alone). Paired with DUKE and/or UVA likely just increases the priority.
FSU is the best option.
And Miami
I cannot get my head around the following logic:
Argument Part 1: BC and GT are in big market BUT - Football drives the bus here and these two have been "really bad for a really long time" (Never mind GT won the conference not that long ago and won the Orange Bowl not that long ago, but let's stipulate that they've been bad for a long time).
Good show once again, Craig.

Why do so many PITT fans think it rates higher than it does academically?

@@tarheel7406 Actually CLEMSON isn't committed to the SEC. Some may think that, but things aren't as they think. The state of Florida & CLEMSON who has a huge draw throughout SC, GA & NC is huge.
FSU and (Clemson or Miami). Whoever becomes available first
There are three major available schools left since we lost out on Texas and A@M to B1G rumors are made up. These include: Notre Dame, FSU and UNC in that order.
FSU, Clemson, Miami, Notre Dame.
The university lost its Association of American Universities membership in 2011, primarily for two reasons: its medical school is at the Omaha campus, not the flagship Lincoln campus; and it focuses heavily on agriculture research, which is not weighted as heavily in the AAU's eyes.

Hs fb qb Lyons(sp?) from Folsom, CA - same hs JoshAllen played at.
Thanks! #OCD
Lol. That is OCD for sure! I will take it under advisement. Thanks for watching.
Louisville makes more sense for B10 than Miami LOL. The Louisville campus is literally in the heart of Big 10 country and close to IU, Purdue, Illinois and Ohio State

@@tlobrill1 wait, are we sports fans here or snob academia fans?

FSU, ND, Clemson, Stanford, Cal, and I don’t know what the sixth is… everything else is a different problem.
Miami
Wow... someone who actually understands realignment and isnt throwing out Duke, GT and Pitt. Only 1 slight disagreement. I think UNC is third behind FSU and ND, but you have a valid point of view.
That may be how it plays out. Thanks for you opinion. Appreciate you watching.
Also recall that it appears that the B1G preferred UMD and RUT over FSU.

Maybe... Drop KANSAS for UVA.
@tarheel7406 don't want the SEC to get Kansas. I want kansas in the big ten for basketball and there football brand is improving. Don't want over rated notre dame. We have 2 Indiana teams already
@@blacksportsguru UVA is a much higher priority of both the SEC and B1G. UVA is a net +2 due to that situation.
Regardless, I was just playing along. UNC is now near certain to be already committed to the SEC, and DUKE's appeal is contingent on being packaged with UNC. KANSAS is a higher-level bubble team that could be skirmished over but isn't really that crucial relative to other schools in play.
@tarheel7406 don't want virginia, UVA is basically a black version of Wisconsin, the run the same basketball system Wisconsin runs, there terrible at football. I prefer Duke over Virginia. Duke football can be a mid ter big ten. The SEC can have Virginia. As a big ten lifer I have always admire ACC teams like Duke North Carolina and NCState
@@blacksportsguru A personal wishlist is just that, and I get it. Using that as a baseline, I started to adjust for current realities and feasibility.
FSU! We are already B1G! ACC just hasn't realized it yet.
Go (B1G) Noles! Sooner is better!
Huh? The ACC preemptively backfilled knowing that FSU will leave.
AAU is worth huge money, and almost there doesn't count
SEC: Clemson, Louisville, NC St, and GT
B1G: ND, Miami, UNC, Stanford, FSU, and Duke.
GATECH's football struggles is the ACC's fault? Has the SEC failed VANDY?
TECH is a distant #2 to UGA. That can't be ignored.

Fsu brings the most viewership and therefore $$$$
ND, UNC, UVA, FSU, ???
a) The SEC also wants UNC and UVA, so that's a 4x win.
b) Winning the fight over UVA/UNC also mitigates the look of having to also take #2s like FSU & GATECH.
Regardless, ND isn't available unless the ACC heavily depletes out, and UNC is going SEC. Given that, it's likely just FSU, MIAMI.
1) North Carolina, 2) Miami, 3) Georgia Tech, 4) Virginia
I’ll tell you what. I wouldn’t want anything to do with espn and Disney right now. The BIG is in better position with fox. Disney is hemorrhaging money. They are in bad shape financially.
Okay, but you do know that broadcasters change conference affiliation, right? In contrast, expansion is for relatively forever.
Why did TX/OK have to go to the SEC? Most likely that wanted the SEC over the B1G. I would prefer the same from their perspective.
Cut out the fluff.
Notre Dame and UNC or UVA - depending on which state legislature lets the school go first without NC State or Virginia Tech first.
ND isn't and can't leave with such lite ACC depletion. UNC is heavily leaning SEC. UVA likely loses a lot of appeal if not paired with UNC.
AAU = Research NOT academics per se. Nebraska was AAU when it came in.
As also evidence by OREGON.
The B1G has made 2 de facto AAU exceptions. I see the compelling reason for NEB. I see none for OREGON.
@@tallfir2520 2021 R&D Expenditures (per at least one source)
IOWAST (#077) ~$360M
NEB (#087) ~$307M
CUSE (#144) ~$152M
OREGON (#149) ~$139M
The first three were effectively expelled from the AAU. OREGON is not highly ranked academically by B1G (or PAC and ACC) standards and should have been expelled from the AAU per recent precedent.
@@tallfir2520 And as I noted and evidenced, OREGON is not highly ranked academically by B1G (nor PAC and ACC) standards and should have been expelled from the AAU per recent precedent.
If the Bigten goes beyond 20 (ND exception) I'm out.

PSU is one but we are so lopsided I won't count that one.
@@crabcakesandfootball4619
a) I said nothing related to "deserves"; I asked about a voluntary decision.
b) The vast general consensus on the MARYLAND 247 board is that MARYLAND had no football rivals in the ACC and have no football or basketball rivals in the B1G.
Georgia Tech is also rich fertile grounds of Georgia that the Big 10 needs. But, I don't think ACC loses their cases against FSU and Clemson.

BigTen not even all world conferences. Just because Fox decided to waste millions of dollars to a pathetic slow football conference like the BigTen. Two good teams and rest might as well play in the little sissy schools for the poor
Miami will end up big 12 or AAC where they belong
They're not going to the AAC. That's crazy talk.
Money matters more to them, thats why fsu is the top target
Research may be shared but grants are not at the conference level. Sharing research does not require being in the same conference. If Sharing research was so lucrative, it would have been done elsewhere.
