What a class act. It's rare to see an actor/actress look back so fondly and positively on their own work. I'm always tired of hearing actors speaks cynically about their old work and how they don't watch it or like it, as if only new experiences and performances can enrich them. Fairuza Balk is great in Oz and the film itself continues to be a cult classic.

I like that she referenced the music. It really is the best, especially because it uses turn of the century styles and instruments. Other period movies' music doesn't really put you in the time period of the movie.

Return to OZ is part of my childhood, i was farmiliar with the original story through cartoons and books, but movie wise i seen Return to oz first, so Fairuza will always be my first live action Dorethy. Even the music brings me back. Very special underrated movie

As a childhood birthday 🎁 (when I turned 4 or 5) my cousins in Ohio gave me the 1939 version on VHS, so Judy Garland will ALWAYS be ‘my’ favorite Dorothy! 🎞🎬🎼 Major props to go out to Fairuza to re-invent the Dorothy character, but NO-ONE will be able to travel ‘Over the Rainbow’ like Judy‼️

Nowadays they'd do it all with CGI, and it would be BORING AS CAN BE!!!!! These old Henson movies were absolutely amazing. So much creativity. So much good, old fashioned movie magic. Genuine imagineering. Fairuza did a fantastic job, especially for her first time out. So much of the film rested on her shoulders. She and Emma were terrific in their respective roles. I just learned not long ago that Emma Ridley's dialogue was dubbed by Murch's daughter, Beatrice. Emma is British and they wanted her to sound more American. That voice is just lovely, and Emma's performance of the character was magnificent. She always looks so sad and your heart just goes out to her. Terrific film all around. Great cast, great score, great effects work. Great photography. And that scene where Dorothy pulls Ozma through the mirror is one of my favorite effects shots of the 1980s. It's just beautiful.

Great Interview! Do to films like Return to Oz, Dr. Moreau, and Valmont, I have a harder time watching her play as a villain. Her voice always sounds a bit empathetic, to me. Plus she had to carry most of Return to Oz at such a young age, a Massive undertaking to be sure. There was no singing to feel the gaps in that film, just pure acting.

@@klassicalmuzik Well, there's one you don't see mentioned often, Gas Food Lodging. And is highly underrated, yes. I think it's one of Fairuza's most bizarre, hard hitting, surreal roles. I don't even know if that's the right words to describe it. She did say, in other interviews that she likes roles that challenge her. That one is certainly, "different".
