Brazilian ex ballet dancer here! I was freaking out when João won haha most of the ballet community here was already aware of him because he wins EVERYTHING locally so we really feel a collective sense of pride ❤ he’s incredible and is gonna go far

I think competitions can be really usefull for dancers from countries where ballet is not so popular or where there is no professional company in a high level. I'm brazilian and the prix has been the way to achieve a good career for many brazilian dancers like Mayara Magri, Leticia Dias, Luciana Sagioro and João Pedro. If it was not the prix, they wouldn't have many options here in Brazil as we have few dance companies. The prix gave them the visibility they needed to go to companies such as the Royal ballet and the Paris Opera, so I guess that the view on competitions depends on wherer you live

I like artistic competitions if it feels like they can be themselves rather than being shoved into a box by the judging. That being said, I do still like seeing displays of technical talent. The contestants who can make you feel something, like joy, are something special, though. 😊
I was not a good dancer at 15, all awkward & eh. 😂 I don't think anyone could call me a good dancer now, I just have fun with it.
One thing I do like about some of the competitions like Prix de Lausanne is that even those who didn't place didn't really lose. They got extra training, masterclasses & coaching, & visibility.
Plus, any excuse to watch talented performers display a variety of variations is good.
    Edit: fixed missing word

@@dancingwithmackenzie You're right that competitions do kind of suck, though. If you have the mindset where you're totally fine, then whatever. If you would rather focus on artistry & interpreting a character while dancing well & being judged cramps your style... No.

You should totally watch Paloma's contemporary variation as well, she really shined over the other dancers there imo! Just pure artistry and joy in her dancing. She also won the audience favorite award.
Crystal is a strong competitor (her contemporary was really impressive!!) but I do get a lot of "dance comp kid" energy from her (a bit more flashy&acrobatic in dancing) which ig works for her since she's been veryyy successful in the dance competition world for all types of dancing. Not sure if she's the type to commit to the classical ballet company route most Pdl winners go through though because she is still so involved with other types of dancing.

personally I think crystal has a very lovely joy/expression when dancing and I much prefer her in an artistic sense over many of the american dancers that generally do the flashy stuff. I hope she pursues ballet professionally, though I know many of the YAGP winners often burn out before adulthood. maybe PDL indicates that she'll stick with classical ballet!

I think competitions are important to improve your art, in ballet companies there is lots of competition to play certain roles and so therefore competitions are so important if you want to keep improving and master your art…Crystals musicality is on another level… she has the whole package, not just pirouettes. She showed that in the classes and in her contemporary, the prix is the crème de la crème…

Was really rooting for Melanie right from the start but Paloma really caught my attention and held it. Even just with during the bar classes and center work, Paloma was already dancing. She wasn't just doing the steps, she was owning them. That's why towards the middle of the Prix de Lausanne, I ended up rooting for Paloma Livellara Vidart and Airi Kobayashi and Crystal Huang. But most especially Paloma coz she was truly a joy to watch when she's performing.

made me think of Melanie, people were pressed as to why she didn’t win but in all honestly while she has very pretty “tricks” and is great with turns her artistry and acting is lacking a lot

Totally agree with you. I was already following Paloma cause she's from Argentina and I was so proud that someone from my country had won but I hadn't seen the boys and the last one was SO FUN, It's sad that he messed up at the end bc I think he was the most enjoyable to watch.
When you first talked about the competition kind of taking away the art aspect I didn't agree very much but then seeing the variation the american girl did I kind of understood where you come from. Like yeah, obviously it was technically flawless but the variation itself didn't express very much. I'm glad Paloma won because she was both technical and artistic

@@dancingwithmackenzie I was thinking about this a while ago. It seems to me that dance is a performing art so it would feel natural when performing. When dancing as part of a competition, it's more like a sport. That's my impression as a non-dancer. Does that sound right?

    • @jfong252
      @jfong252 7 месяцев назад +2

Not sure why her completely valid opinion on dance comps causes you to lose all respect. Is this sarcasm? I can’t tell. 🤔
While friendly competition can help some dancers thrive, it’s not going to be for everyone. And THAT’S OK! And that goes for anything in life. Some folks have a competitive nature, others don’t and find motivation elsewhere. Mackenzie articulated her reasons pretty well. What’s yours?

So I love your content and have watched it for a few years now 🫶🏼 i just wanted to ask of maybe you could light the videos a bit more because the room is quite dark so it’s a bit difficult to see everything, like in the workout video for example.
Just a quick suggestion, otherwise I love everything you’re putting out 💖🫶🏼

Yesssss quality over quantity!!!!! one girl (not gonna name names) who is viral on TikTok for doing 20 pirouettes has the worst technique! Especially during barre, she can’t develope and hold for even 3 sec.. her attitude is confusing don’t know if it’s a back attitude or a side who knows what… there’s so many more. Anyway like u said ballet is NOT simply doing 10 pirouettes and a bunch of tricks… ugh

Also if she was terrible technique wise in every other avenue she probably would not have made it to the pdl. Variations aren't just turns after all. She has weak spots but so does every dancer.
