  • Is this camera still any good? this was one of the first Pro-sumer level cameras from Nikon and proved to be a very capable camera. In this video I wonder around Bewdley and captured what took my eye, all the photos are raw and unedited.

Hi, I've got the nikon D300, after 4 years owning the D200, I sold it. Although the D300 has the more efficient CMOS sensor, I actually prefer the colours from the D200, somehow its, how should I say.... more vibrant, warm and alive...its difficult to explain with words, so much so I went and got my D200 back. NEWER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER!

I have the Nikon D200 and just love the ergonomics of the camera. The pictures I get from it are really nice. It will be with me for a long time.

I sold my first Nikon D200 a while back. The CCD sensor on it has charismatic n powerful colours as red is redder, pink is pinker etc. Colours from later CMOS sensors are different. I'd say less dramatic on my later D300 (which I quickly sold on).
It's why I've gone back to buying another D200.
My D3 has the same colours as the D300, but the whole pro body is beefed up, more responsive, and will most likely outlast you and me.

My D200 is now my back up ,back up camera to the D300 which I believe to be the best designed, layout and a joy to use. My new toy D800 (second hand) is good too.

Just as you said, the metering system is a hit or miss. The key issue with the sensor is that it does not handle underexposure well at all. Noise simply becomes unacceptable even at -2 or -3EV. So to use this camera, I need to make sure that I do not under expose, but at the risk of blowing out the highlights. Quite a difficult feat to achieve perfect exposure with the narrow dynamic range, I'm afraid.

It might sell for £100.00 now, but donkeys years ago I paid £1500.00 for my Nikon D200 body, and I got lucky as they were on back order and someone had cancelled. In anycase, D200 is an iconic Nikon digital camera, thanks to its outstanding build quality, no nonsense and well laid out still photography focused features and that 10 MP CCD sensor, that with a little bit of post produces the most analogue like results and really beautiful colours. I do miss mine.
