Long Beach McNeilus Rear Loader

  • Pretty much as un-SoCal as you can get around here. Not only are rear loaders somewhat uncommon around here in the first place, seeing them collecting residential, let alone on wide streets that you'd expect to be automated, is pretty rare. Not to mention most of the city's commercial/multi-family is also handled by these trucks and McNeilus is rather inferior around here. And there's no separate green waste collection, either.
I ran into these guys on Labor Day and ended up following them for a solid 90 minutes. I normally prefer automated trucks but I like to see some commercial rear-load action once in a while. The crew also moved nice and efficiently and knocked out about 5 streets of extremely heavy trash in the time I followed (most houses with 2 or 3 carts at least). Essentially any other city or hauler in the region would put an automated truck on this route for carts with a front loader running dumpsters, but there's no doubt in my mind this quick-moving crew could out-perform an automated truck easily.
I know the video is on the longer side so don't feel obligated to watch the entire thing, but I decided including everything I filmed was worth it. Thanks to the friendly crew; the driver is the same one seen in Tristen's recent video.

Never had a chance to drop a comment here at first. Took me 3 watch sessions to get through the whole thing lol, and yes that is extremely heavy trash up there. Between that and most of those houses being duplexes or triplexes, I'd say the city made a good decision making this a rear loader route. With the limited parking space on those streets as well, it would be pointless to use an ASL if the driver has to get out and move the toters around anyway. Great post! I've been pretty big on semi-auto vids lately as well.

Im from LB and they have a cool fleet of trucks! They use Xpeditors and Condors even for non refuse applications too which is neat.

I guess it all depends on personal preference. I grew up around Dempster and EZ Pack rear loaders, slow, but strong packers. When we switched over to McNeilus at the county, there was a world of difference, fast pack cycles, but didn't hold as much garbage as the old EZ Pack Goliaths. Nice catch though, love seeing rear loaders on commercial, they are truely the best all around truck for the money.

Please ask them if they would take a live, diapered human and his diapers as waste?
