Claire's ever popular Outlander Cowl! No need to pay more than you need to buy something someone's already knitted- it's easy and fun!!
Products used:
-The size 50 needles were purchased from Hobby Lobby and are sometimes on sale
- The yarn is Yarn Bee Effortless Super Bulky in Mushroom
I get these questions A LOT, so here are some places to BUY THE MATERIALS:
Yarn ( and select mushroom): go.magik.ly/ml/...
OR
You can use lion brand hometown USA: go.magik.ly/ml/...
Size 50 needles ( the wood seems to be hard to find right now): go.magik.ly/ml/...
go.magik.ly/ml/...
go.magik.ly/ml/...
xxKristen
I bought the bamboo needles and my husband asked me why I bought a vampire stick? lol!
I really wish there were more Outlander inspired patterns out there,,season after season that show is a treasure trove of beautiful designs and colors, and a knitters DREAM(yes,we watch Outlander to Dream about the knitwear,,really ;))))
There's loads on etsy but as far as free ones and tutorials on YT, I don't know. Probably not as prevalent since I guess a lot of people are making money off their patterns
I didn’t even notice that you had music playing. I thought the video was awesome and I appreciate it.
Hi Lisa, thank you so much for your comment! I saw your other one where you asked where the part 2 was and I tried to reply there but couldn't find it, it's still up! here's the link: ruclips.net/video/8rGJ1SS-Fck/видео.html
Sorry for my late reply! I hope it helps
She was definitely using Lionbrand Wool Ease Thick and quick. It's easy to tell by the way the yarn looks.
Great video, I’m going to try my first one. I do need some help with the turn and sewing together to complete. Thank you, Robin
This is terrific, I am an experienced knitter and Kristin you are too. In watching this I learned new stuff, so thank you. I detect a bit of a Southern accent, made me feel all warm and cozy while I was learning new stuff. Take cafe good care of yourself!
Well how kind of you, thank you so much! I'm so glad this video continues to help people. Haha yes there's definitely a twang in there ( more than I like on myself sometimes) but thank you again for the kind comment. You take care, too!
I'm a beginner and your instructions are steady to follow thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I' m on the four one. They were all for family members who love the show and now I'm making one for myself. They are as fast as you say to make. Since I crochet weaving ends together is easy. Thanks again. I just learned to knit in September of 2015.
+Victoria Smith Thank you so much for the kind words! This was one of my first videos over a year ago and I look back and think there's so many things I should have told better, but I'm so glad if helped you!!
Kristen, thank you so much for this tutorial. 5 years ago I made this cowl thanks to your great video, and now I'm making 3 more!. I'm not a good kniter, I have a hard time following other's videos instructions, but for some reason yours is really easy to follow. Thank you for still having this video online! Ps.: Everyone asks why I have such big needles xD
Aww thank you so much for the kind comment! It wasn't the best video quality so I'm so glad that people are still able to make pieces from it!
Thanks for such a clear tutorial, I'm going to make one for my girlfriend who is a massive Outlander fan....for the knitting I'm sure :)
+Calvin Brewer that's so awesome of you!! thanks for the kind comment :)
My pleasure :) ....and i lied a little....i'm as much an Outlander fan as my girlfriend lol...something for everyone :)
I've never knitted before but I REALLY wanted to make Claire's cowl and this video is extremely easy and helpful for a first timer! Thanks!
Katie Dralle so glad to hear it! Thank you so much for your kind comment and letting me know! :)
Just purchased needles OMG How will I EVER get this yarn to stay on. I am a beginner! I'm so glad this video is here so I can refer back to it. Thanks for being on I will certainly need help!
It's not as daunting as you think, most of the time just pushing it down will ensure it doesn't come off. You got this!
I really enjoyed your video. I am a beginning knitter it was very easy for me to follow. You are great to listen to and follow.
Thank you so much for the kind compliments!! I know my sound could have been better but I'm glad it was good for you!
So glad you told me IF I make a wide, long one I may not be able to move my neck again! haha Thank you for the knitting tutorial!
Thanks Kristen, I love your video. It is very helpful and my cowl is beautiful. I couldn't decide whether to twist it or not. I got my wool, Lion brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (barley) at Michaels and the plastic needles online at Amazon.
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment! I know it’s older and a little blurry but it makes me happy to know people are still finding it useful and able to make it!!
Thank you so much for the video; very helpful.
Good Tutorial. I will check your channel out again. My 13 year old son wants to learn to knit. He has crocheted better than his sister for 4 years. All the men in my family have learned how to crochet. (that is 4 of them now from 13-24-28-47) and they're good when they actually crochet. The 13 year old is the best and more interested. Ye wants to learn to knit now. and we are going to take lessons. I need to see if I can do this in crochet... I Am Inspired.
Great video! Thank you for posting this. I am new to knitting (only maybe 2-3 weeks), but I am using this cowl as my inspiration piece. After my practice, I should be ready to start this piece by the end of the month. Seems like great payoff for a small investment in time! I will look for your future video about "stitching together".
Yes I love this video it helps me so much. Please make a video so I can finish my cowl. I’m new a knitting. I’m so glad I found this video.
Just came here to comment on those enormous needles. Holy crap lol. I’m a beginner and the largest size I’ve used is 12- those felt massive.
Have never even heard of size 50!😂 I’m tempted to go look for them 😁
Yes hahaha they are quite a doozy to work with the first time, not because it's hard but because it's like 2 broomsticks :)
Please can you tell me what color of the Lion brand Hometown USA yarn. I already looked for Yarn Bee yarn and can't find Color Mushroom.
I just found your pattern...you are to funny! I just purchased a size 50, and the Lion Brand wool ease thick and quick tweeds in gray.
Hi there, thanks for the video! How many yards of yarn will I need for this? Ordering mine online so I want to be sure I get enough :)
Nice! I’ve designed a few shawls like the ones she wears later in season 1 I think. Lol biggest needles I’ve got are US 17’s!
Oh really? That sounds so nice! Which ones did you make?
@@KristenLB I think it's a dark shawl, chunkier yarn, with tassels on each point. I think it's in multiple seasons but I know I've seen it in the end of season 1, when she goes to find Jamie.
thanks so much for this video It helped me so much and I love the cowl.
Guess what I’m making next? Love this tutorial
Great tutorial!
I am thinking.........provisional cast on.......then Kitchener stitch to join? It would be seamless, and you could add a twist or two?
Kristen....great video. I have been looking all over for Outlander Series items. I had found some on Lion Brand (downloadable) but they are making it difficult to find any more. Do you have any new patterns? I made the capelet and wrist warmers. I hope you make more videos...you are a great teacher. (Hope you are feeling better)
This is excellent! Thanks x You are awesome x :)
thank you! appreciate the kind words!
Great video!
Interesting I will try
Lol, you're funny....excited to make this!
How many ball yarns did you use for all of it???
It's a fantastic video and thank you for posting it. I was wondering if you could post a video, to show how to connect the two ends of the cowl together? X
+louise purvis I'm working on knitting one of these up very soon so I can show this!! thanks for asking and sticking with me!
+louise purvis Video on sewing together the ends is up!!
Thank you. Those needles for me are hard to fine unless I go on line...maybe I can fine needle close to it and try. The music on your video is nice.love it.
I would like to make this, but have never been able to master knitting. I would LOVE a crochet pattern. Can you instruct how to do that or do you know anywhere I might find a crochet pattern that is similar?
Hey Donna!! This one's pretty easy even for beginners ( because of the big needles and yarn) if you ever decide to give it a go, but if not and you're far more comfortable with crochet, I suggest using this pattern: ruclips.net/video/SYDhTanpWZI/видео.html She is really good, very nice! I met her on a fanpage for this show once, and I'm sure if you have any questions, she'd be glad to answer there too! Hope that helps!
Stupid question, but I'm new to knitting....is sewing the ends together similar to what I would do if I had crocheted the cowl? Also, casting on was something I struggled with ( still do actually) and your method seems super easy, and I wish I would have found it sooner! Loved the tutorial and can't wait to try it! I'm currently working on crocheting a Claire inspired cowl (so definitely not exact to the actual one) and I can't wait to see the differences between the two with my own eyes!
very nice!
Thank you so much for showing the ease of making this Infiniti scarf. I am trying, after many false starts, to knit the shawl. They call for lion brand knobby yarn and a sock type of yarn to be knit side by side (2 strands). The increases are very difficult. Do you have any suggestions? The easy one leaves a hole and the more difficult increases are difficult because the yarn is quite thick. Please help!
Hi Kristen, Loved your instructions! I don't think you have mentioned how many yarn balls you have used for this project. Can you please let me know. Thanks!
+Gizmojan Hi there, I purchased 4 skeins of this bulky yarn. I held two strands together, so I didn't *quite* need all 4, but I used part of the 4th one, hope that helps!
yes thank you!
Ficou lindo bem rústico. Obrigada.
Eu estou feliz que você acho que bom. Obrigada por seu comentário.
did you end up ever showing how to bring the ends together? This would be much appreciated. i am a newbie! love the video!
+Kristen em Hi there- I'm definitely working on getting that video out. It's taking some time because between work and class, I haven't had time to start many new knitting projects ( hence lack of knitting videos) and as soon as I get the time to knit one of these up so I can show how to sew ends together, I'll get one up!
+Kristen Leigh thank you! no problem!
+Kristen em Hi again! new video on weaving the ends together is up on my channel as of tonight, thanks for watching :)
How do you manage the two skeins of yarn at once? Do you just let them roll on the floor or whatever?
Hi yes, just let them go wherever, usually just let them both unravel bit by bit in my lap or in my recliner where they get stuck between me and the chair, or you can use a yarn bowl
Do you block your knitted piece? I just learned this term as a new knitter. Thanks, Laura
+Laura Shultice Hi Laura! For the Outlander cowl, I don't block it because it's so bulky and the yarn is very forgiving, and usually lays pretty well. I do some other items though, depending on what it is.
May I ask what yarn you used? I know you said in the video but in a comment reply you said it was 111 yards and neither of the mentioned yarns were that long. The yarn's too expensive for me to buy double :( Thanks :)
Hey! I used "Yarn Bee" Effortless Super Chunky from Hobby Lobby ( it was quite high I think) and I don't think it's around anymore. Something comparable I can recommend is Hometown USA from Lion Brand :) Let me know if that didn't answer all your Q's :)
Hilarious!!!! loved the video.
I love this cowl. I just finished it and thought I'd sew it together but oh man, my seaming looks horrible! Can you do the video you were going to do on how to sew it together? If It's not stretched too much, it looks fine, but once stretched at all it looks really holey. :-/ Thanks.
+Brook Davison Hi there! I'm working on knitting one of these so I can film a video on this! sorry it's taken so long, just haven't been able to start any new knitting projects lately
+Brook Davison That video on sewing the ends is up as of tonight! hope it helps! :) Sorry I'm having to reply to everyone individually, it won't let me just tag in the comments.
+Kristen Leigh Thanks so much! I did manage haphazardly to seam mine together and I LOVE it. However, my daughter has knit one now and needs to seam it so I'll direct her to your video as I'm sure your technique is a gazillion times better than my fumbling along technique. :)
Not necessarily lol!! I think mine works pretty good, hopefully it is easy enough to follow, but thank you so much for the kind comment and I hope it continues to work for you :)
In your video you say the cowl length is 29-31 inches but in your answer to me below you said the one you are wearing is 48 inches? Did you have to use another couple of balls of yarn? My first one barely made it to 29 inches with 2 balls of yarn. But it does look great so thanks for the instructions. :)
Kate Pearce I'm sorry, I got my words mixed up there, what I meant was that it should be 29-31 inches long, which should be about 48-50 garter stitch rows if you count them. I apologize for that!! My yarn was 111 yards long and I had two balls I used together, then when those ran out, I bought a third one, made it into two balls, and finished knitting until I got to 29-31 inches, which was only a little way more. Again, I'm sorry for the confusion :)
No worries! I had to use a tiny bit of extra wool to sew mine up so I suspected I would need at least one more ball if I wanted to make it a bit longer. :) thanks so much for getting back to me.
sure thing!! I hope it worked well despite my miscommunication :)
A video to sew it up would be nice!
I am so sorry I am so late with this reply as I rarely come check these comments on the older videos, but I'm so sorry, and likely you've moved on by now, but I did make a 2nd part about connecting here: ruclips.net/video/8rGJ1SS-Fck/видео.html
Very cool! Did you twist the cowl you are wearing or is it straight? How long is your one? I am making one right now. Thanks for the video.
Kate Pearce hey!! I twisted that one before sewing the two ends together :) it was about 48-50 inches long when I cast off. Thank you!!
You are just so cute! Thank you for sharing!!
Kristen do you know where I can buy large size DPN to finish a super bulky hat? I have found size 17 and then 36, nothing in between
I'm so sorry, I don't have any DPNs actually, but my best guess is Amazon?
Is 2 balls of yarn enough to make the entire cowl?
Sabrina Cavieres she used 4
Would this be difficult for a newbie? And may I ask where you get your supplies? I have Ave a tough time finding supplies in my area. Thanks for the video. Ohhhhhhh and by the way it would be helpful to have a tutorial on weaving the ends.
+Becky Williams I somehow missed this comment when I was replying a while back. I'm so sorry for that! I have a video coming out soon on the ends. Also, I got all my supplies at Hobby Lobby, I believe you can order online. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
+Becky Williams The weaving the ends video is up on my channel as of tonight! thanks!
I love this tutorial as I couldn't knit prior however when you have finished how do you get the wool off the needle? Is it like a backwards castoff type thing?
dunvillms hi there! I have a part 2 of finishing up the outlander cowl. Just a second and I will link it
Thank you so very much so addicted to your tutorials. Easy and you have made some absolutely gorgeous creations.
dunvillms ruclips.net/video/8rGJ1SS-Fck/видео.html
dunvillms thank you SO much for the kind comment :) very happy to hear. sometimes I feel too chatty but glad I could help.
Wondering how wide the cowl is.....you mentioned the length to be 27 -31 inches.
I'm so sorry I don't remember. I have it packed away because I've moved recently. You can cast on less if it looks like it's gonna be too wide for you. Wish I could be more helpful
@@KristenLB could u measure when u do unpack.im trying to do on a bit smaller needle since I have them.
@@KristenLB also wondering how many balls of yarn it used
I don't knit, so can you recommend a crochet stitch for this cowl. Lady from Texas.
Hey! :) I can really recommend this one. I haven't used it but have a lot of friends who have: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sassenach-claire-outlander-crochet-cowl
How much yarn should we buy
It's been such a long time and I can't really remember but I think I needed 6 Skeins.
Hi, how do you do the last row???? How it comes off ? Thank you
Hi girl, i bought everything and ready to start tomorrow! First knitting project and your video seems super easy and fun but i dont know how to do the last row when you take off of it from the needle... :(( i need help!! How do you do that?? Thanksie in advance!!
Music very distracting...FYI...great video!
Thanks for this video! Can you tell me how wide (tall) the cowl is in inches?
Hey! I'm so sorry but since I have all of mine twisted and joined, it's impossible for me to get an exact measurement ( which I should have taken down on paper long ago when I made it up) but I believe it was around 46" high ( and I just checked when I measured just now best I could). What helped me a lot originally was twisting ( if you want a twist) and holding around your neck joined with your hands as it would be when you sew ends together. That gave me a pretty good idea!
Thanks for trying :-) I'm wondering about the other direction - the one that should be easier to measure
oh I'm so sorry! ( this is why I don't do anything dealing with much math or calculations because I always misread what's needed!! haha). Relaxed and laid flat, it's 16 inches across. But it would stretch to be more than that as well.
Great, thank you!! :-)
How do you keep the yarn from twisting while you are knitting?
LaDonna Orange this isn't knit in the round so there are no issues with twisting ..is it twisting on straight needles for you?
Kristen do u get those needles at joann store .can u tell me what kind of yarn to get so I can make that same cowl thanks susan moran
+Susan Moran Hi Susan, I didn't get mine at Joann, I got my needles at Hobby Lobby, but you could probably get them at Joann, I would check online first if you're not sure. I use HL because it's closest to me :) The yarn is Yarn Bee Effortless Bulky in Mushroom and it was a Hobby Lobby brand :) best wishes!
No not until next weekend .the weather here been bad . snowstorm 36 hour 's. Of 's snow starting tomorrow but I will get them at joannns. Now I'm making a shawl .
How much yarn should I buy for this project?
Hi!! I think I needed 4 skeins. It depends how much is on it. Since I held two together, I can't remember if just two did the trick, but if you can easily return wherever you buy yarn, I would get 4 to be safe and if you didn't need the other two you can return :)
Hi Kristen, Can you tell me where you bought this yarn?
Cindy Yan Hancock fabrics before all my stores closed and hobby lobby :)
I only found it online! $8 or $10 a skein.
Can you use one super bulky yarn instead of the 2
Hi there! I did use super bulky and held two of that together. You could just do the one, but it would be a lot more gape-y, if that makes sense. The wholes and spaces would be much bigger. Or you could use smaller needles, maybe like a 25? with just the one strand. I've only really done it this way so I'm not sure what results other methods would yield. Hope you work it out, would be glad to help with anything else! :)
How many skeins of yarn did you use???
I'm so sorry, was really long ago so I don't quite remember. I think 6 or so since I held doubled
@@KristenLB Ok thanks so much!! It's a great tutorial!!!!
@@undercoveryarnsnob5784 Thank you for saying so!
How big are the skeins?
they are 6oz, or 111 yards
How much wool do I need please?
It's been such a long time I can't remember but I think I bought 6 skeins. That probably isn't helpful, sorry!
How many balls of yarn did this take?
Hey! I'm pretty sure 2 was too few, so I think it took 4. It was quite a while ago and I haven't made this one in a while but I'm pretty sure that's right
KLSunwear Thank you!
How many skeins?
I'm so sorry I can't remember. I think 6? Sorry!
Lovely video but really annoying music.... made it hard to hear you.
sorry but the music is too loud, video is entirely blurry and bummer I don't knit.
all I had was my macbook camera at the time and I didn't want to let it stop me from making it. Sorry it didn't work out for you
