As someone with friends like this I can confirm, it’s epic
so my friend and i did this challenge ourselves, and the fact that i managed to hard predict that my friend would choose Haxorous with me picking Hatterine was amazing.

I just realized-
Articuno begins with A, the first letter in the alphabet. Zapdos Is Z, the last letter in the alphabet. But moltres is M. M is the middle letter in the alphabet...

The HM mules didn't count, though personally I'd have gone Typhlosion + Quagsire because the Magcargo was so bad.

I think I have an idea for a fun variant: nuzlocke version. You have to capture the first A you come across, and if you faint it, you fail that letter. You only have to catch the first of the letter once you've completed the previous letter.
Even after watching Mikey catch the Inkay, when John said he could only think of only one Pokémon, my first thought was "igglybuff?"

If your still looking for ideas for what to do with a shield play through challenge, you could try “Can I beat Pokemon Shield as an Electric Type Gym-leader” where you also use Electric Type Pokémon or Pokémon with an Electric type prevolution or evolution
