To be honest, I feel like Magical Girl site’s main character’s suffering is just because of bad luck. But Sayaka in madoka Magica’s suffering is because of her choices not because of bad luck.

@@eleonorepb4565the main difference comes from how magical Girl site goes overboard with the girls bad luck.
She has like 7 different life ruining traumatic things to deal with, that are all unrelated and all of them are exaggerated to the point that it becomes hard to take serious. Especially when you consider the amount of just crazy evil she is surrounded by that are all unrelated
I get what the author was going for in a “there is nothing worth living for” in her life, that’s why he killed her pet cat, but that doesn’t make it almost comedic in how extreme it all is.

I loved Explanation Point‘s Watamote videos, but I can’t necessarily agree with that one. Of course the topic is more complicated, but I can’t necessarily agree, that you can only feel sympathy for characters that suffer because of their own consequences. The problem with this anime is more that the drama is really over the top which ironically makes it less serious.

I might as well spoil Sarina's bit here, because not only does she get a stick, we also find out the whole reason she bullied the crap out of Aya was because she never got a thank you from Aya for standing up for her against other people bullying her.
And low key, I need to say this, this excuse is the biggest load of horse apples I've ever heard. You don't go and become the biggest bully to someone just because you didn't get thanked for doing the bare minimum of human decency. Especially after arranging for that person to get r-worded.

No no your wrong. in the manga the reason she bullies aya is very INHUMANE. She bullies aya because aya shy, nervous and not good at talking. and aya sometimes make their class difficult. Like when aya was playing sports, she couldn't run fast and ended up taking a very long time to get to class. and one classfind her boring. and agreed to ignore her. Since then, Sarina has been bullying her, which even resembles torture. Aya started being slandered as "prostituting" and damaged aya things. Basketball was thrown at her body, she was forced to eat what was on the floor. the hell. The author is very similar to Hajime. Butthis is very serious

I really hate shows like this where they copy the formula of Madoka Magica but they also amuse me. Everyone looks at Madoka for popularising the dark magical girl genre and think “we just need to do the same amount of violence if not more and will be successful.” But Madoka was never really that violent to begin with. There was never overt mutilations, blood nor gore, the show had always been about subtext.
The biggest onscreen death was Mami but it wasn’t over the top. You never saw the decapitation on screen, all you see is her body being lifted in midair with her head just offscreen. They don’t specifically show you but instead have you piece together and imagine what had happened which leaves a bigger impact, sometimes less is more. Now a show like Magicla Girl Site would show the beheading and making it as violent and bloody as possible. It’s all the violence but no subtext, reason or purpose.
Madoka Magica was never about suffering, it was about finding hope in the darkest times. But All these other shows just ignore that and think it was about tormenting girls as horribly as possible. It’s like the MCU, everyone wants that same success Madoka had instantly without putting in the time, effort or even understanding of what made it successful in the first place. SHAME

This was incredibly well put. I could probably count on one hand the amount of times they showed blood in madoka magica. The most gruesome probably being the scene in rebellion, but if we’re only talking about the show, the most blood in one spot would probably be when homura’s leg got caught under the rubble while fighting walpurgisnacht, which wasn’t even that much blood. Madoka was never visually full of gore or violence, rather its psychological horror is the deeply chilling part.

Simply having a character suffer is not characterization nor is it an arc. This is where a lot of shows like this fail, putting too much emphasis on the suffering with no substance beyond that. It's not enough to have a character suffer, he or she has to strive to overcome it or want a means to escape.
Using Izuku Midoriya as an example, at the start of his story, he's constantly bullied, everyone tells him he can't be a hero without a quirk, his own mother doesn't support him, and his one attempt to help would have done more harm than good if not for All Might. But then, he gets chosen by All Might thanks to his heart and drive rather than his actions.
I think if this show had an arc about the MC becoming a magical girl after all that suffering and then dedicating herself to making sure no one else suffers like she had, the premise would have been so much stronger.

I've read some of it, but I also didn't like the whole continuous torture thing. I saw a RUclips video where the person said the main difference between Madoka Magica & Magical Girl Site is hope. Madoka at least has hope, but Site just has a lot of trauma & violence that keeps happening. I will say it was satisfying to see the brother getting annoyed that he couldn't hurt Aya anymore.

    • @jk-2053
      @jk-2053 Год назад +37

Ah, I saw that video, but I don't agree. If you kill off a bunch of characters, your audience might not want to get as emotionally invested in the remaining characters if they're expecting them to die off so easily, but not killing off your characters won't make a bad story into a good story, not to mention that good writers can make you emotionally invested in characters in spite of that. The main issue isn't how often you kill off your characters, it's why you kill them off and why you have them around in the first place. In this case, it's not about being hopeful/hopeless, but rather the purpose of that hope or lack thereof.
In this case, I'd say it's about how they use the suffering. Like, suffering is no substitute for characterization. Seeing a kitten get kicked may cause people to feel bad for the kitty, but it doesn't make the kitty an interesting character. The most notably interesting thing she's done is being unwilling to harm others in spite of how abusive they are, but beyond that, she feels rather blank. Other characters suffer a different kind of issue, namely how shallow their characters feel. Blonde magical girl tries to tell MC to casually kill those who are doing bad things, but doesn't kill Magical Hunter nor make a big deal about leaving her alive or wonder just how much value a person needs to have before the risk of leaving them alive is worthwhile. Basically, the use of suffering is shallow, so it all feels overly edgy for no good reason.

I remember watching a video by the. explanation mark that explains my exact thought son magical girl site. Aya doesn’t have any motivation for the world that she is in nothing will be better if she stays a magical girl. Hell she starts the show almost killing herself, she is already at rock bottom. If her friends die then what will she learn that the world is terrible and awful. No, she already knew all of that. Plus all of her misfortune is by pure luck unlike the main inspo for the series Madoka Magica. Since in that show there is a clear line of events connecting to the outcome and the certain character’s choices. Any bad paths they go down like Sayaka make since because of her choices in the show. She refused help from others, turned away from any support, and focused herself on only one impossible moral value, that Mami who was presented as perfect couldn’t even live up to. These series of events make since since Sayaka made choices that directly affected her and the outcome of her situation. What I mean is that most of Magical Girl Site is incoherent and that there is barely connected to what the characters do other than just plain luck. I personally would not read or watch it since it just feels like torture porn. Especially after seeing all the things Aya goes through in just the first episode, for no rhyme or reason. I felt my brain turn to mush while reading it and it just made me feel Disgusted. It really isn’t worth the read or watch honestly. I hope I saved your brain cells by not recommending this atrocity. Not for me. And people blame Madoka Magica for the death of a genre, when in actuality, it's copycats that fail to understand what made Magica phenomenal. If you're gonna make your story dark, there's gotta be an in story reason for it. It's like with Arcane. That show has substance and characters to follow, and actual complex morals that get the viewers thinking, and is not just bloody war fights for the sake of bloody war fights.
If you want a classic magical girl franchise that stays true to the pre-Madoka era of the genre, Pretty Cure has been my childhood. Best way I can describe it is that it's like Power Rangers, but with magical girls and it's anime. (Actually, Super Sentai IS Power Rangers, and this is made by the same company) And because of that, every season has a brand new unique cast of magical girl characters with their own story theme. One is fairy tales, one is music, one is princesses, one is witches, one is animal/candy, etc. So you don't have to start at the beginning. You can jump into ANY Pretty Cure season you want, and enjoy yourself without having to worry about context. (The currently airing Hirogaru Sky Pretty Cure is AMAZING so far)
If you want my personal recommendations, my top three favorite seasons are Heartcatch, Smile, and Go! Princess. And I think all three of these are good starting seasons for newcomers. Heartcatch is very popular with the community, with a great art style and mature messaging (for a kids show), and has some of the best writing even today. Smile isn't as tightly written, in fact it's very reliant on fun cutesy slice of life adventures, but the characters are loveable and beautifully developed, and it's a lot of pure fun, with actually a bit of substance that I think is underrated. Go! Princess is kind of a mixture of these and relatively follows a teenage girl trying to follow her dream of becoming a real world princess, and winds up on a Magical Girl team to save the world of the person who inspired her dreams.
I just recommend one thing: DO NOT WATCH THE ENGLISH DUBS. THEY ARE TERRIBLE AND WILL GIVE YOU A BAD IMPRESSION ON THIS SERIES.

@@idrinkpastaforaliving_6269 That is correct. I say 'don't watch that' because not only is the dialogue there very inaccurate to the original, but there's also badly edited lighting in some scenes, weird ost choices, and the big one for me: They cut out some episodes of the story that didn't need to be cut. It puts a dent on the plot and leaves dub viewers out on certain plot beats.
For example: There's a Peace (the character) episode in the original where she is trying to reconnect with her memories of her deceased dad. She didn't understand the identity of her own name for a long time. That episode is cut in the dub. You miss out on good characterization for a main character.
Or worse examples are with DokiDoki: You know how many episodes they cut in the dub? NINETEEN.
No I'm not joking, look it up. They cut out HUGE plot points. There's cut scenes that make transitions really awkward, there's no explanations for certain stuff, whole story arcs are cut out. My favorite is that the final power up for the team in the original anime was earned clear as day by a beautiful episode and well earned effort. But in the dub? They just have the power up. Out of nowhere. No scene showing them getting this. No prompting or explanation at all. (Better yet, the previous powerup was used nine times in the original anime. In the dub they only use it twice)
If you watch the dub, not only will you be greeted to obnoxious dialogue not in the original, but you will be confused as I'll get out with the story.
So yeah. You NEED to see the original anime to understand the story.

This show is just “fairly god parents” but not thought out.
I am serious, let me explain
The premise is the same “kid that due to circumstances that they have no control over gets super natural powers to compensate for their suffering and must learn to grow into more mature full people due to it”.
But in fairly the lesson Timmy learns is always the same “he can’t just wish away his problems and must put in the hard work to overcome them naturally” which is why the biggest issues are self inflicted as a result of him trying to side step his problem.
Being annoyed at his limitations of being a kid? He wishes himself to be an adult and see that it isn’t all it’s made out to be. He feels under appreciated? Fine he wishes he didn’t exist. And then learns that he never did anything that would make people want to appreciate him and so on.
While in magical girl site, none of the girls issues are her fault and as such she doesn’t have to learn anything. The “side effect” of her power just makes her life span shorter. Which doesn’t matter, since she was about to Game end herself. She has nothing to lose from abusing the power. If she just killed her bullies and brother, there wouldn’t be a bad outcome for her. And the world ending apocalypse doesn’t matter either because it’s not her fault and this isn’t a world worth saving.
This should be a story about growing up and past your trauma but it ends up being a self pity edge fest

I don’t like calling every somewhat serious magical girl show a Madoka clone but out of all the serious mahou shoujo boom this was the worst offender of being a legit clone but not understanding any of it and not even understanding magical girls in general. I am normally not this critical of this stuff but I feel like this author has some sort of bias agasint magical girls since his only other work is another edgy magical girl story. Site is Suffering for the sake of it, very little care to world build, and all the fan service but no transformation scenes or even magical girl outfits? Magical Girl Raising Project is still shat on till this day for being a "madoka clone" but while girls do die it still understands magical girl anime and far differentiae's itself from madoka.
It’s like everyone thinks Madoka got big for killing people and suffering but that’s always happened in magical girl shows it just did it in a unique way. Also look at YuYuYu some of the suffering gets heart wrenching but there’s pay off at least and likable characters

The biggest problem I have with Magical Girl Site is how it completely misses the point on why shows like Madoka Magica worked
Take the end of episode 3 with Mami's death for example, not only does it serve as a incredible dropping of the mic moment where we and Madoka realise the horrifying reality of being a magical girl and fighting the witches, but we also grew attached to Mami in those first 3 episodes, making her death all the more shocking
Magical Girl Site meanwhile is basically just torture p&rn, it confuses being edgy with being mature. Just showing your main character being tortured by multiple people(including her own brother) in the first 3 episodes doesn't automatically make your show deep and mature, it comes across as edgy and dark just for the sake of it instead of using it to explore actual themes

Chances are, any deep ideas you see here are likely just you projecting your own interesting ideas into the show. To expect something meaningful & deep is to expect self-awareness of the authors and any writer worth their salt knows how improtant first impressions are. That's not to say every show that's a smash success hits the ground running but they at least hit the ground walking and don't hit the ground breaking both their legs. What I am saying is don't expect this show to get better with the promise of it being good because if it had potential it would already be okay-good from the start.
A show which starts off this bad and this "trashy" with things like fanservice do not tend to get out of that rut. I like some good trash but there is an uncanny valley of trash which is what urks. Either go HIgh School of the Dead or be something serious.

to me, what makes magical girl site more uncomfortable and generally much worse than madoka magica is its framing and intentions. magical girl site's visuals are incredibly intense, especially during extreme moments of suffering, and the consistency of those moments makes me believe that the intentions behind it are... uncomfortable, to say the least.
"torture porn" is not a term i like to use, as i think it isnt really used by the majority in a way that feels fitting for those words, but this? this is torture porn. it's extreme to point where i have no reason to believe it was made for any other reason than for fetishistic reasons, and has nothing meaningful to bring to the table.
madoka, while dark and sad, was never just about the suffering. it had something it wanted to say, and reinforces the themes of hope, love, and kindness found in other magical girl shows. that, and it isn't graphic in the slightest. it doesn't constantly zoom in on our protagonist's faces while their beaten and abused by everyone around them, and make us stare at them as they scream and cry. that's ALL magical girl site does. it doesn't have anything to say, it doesn't have any excuses for itself, it's just a show made to fulfill a pornographic obsession with young girls suffering. meanwhile the good magical girl deconstructions, like madoka, get stuck with their baggage and blamed for things they had no part in.

I feel like the reason madoka magica was so popular was because it explored something new with the magical girl genre
Its not because it was more gory or more violent or artsy or whatever, it was because they were exploring a new side of the genre that happened to feature those elements in the world
Imo its the same reason the dark knight trilogy was so popular, it wasnt just because it looked different, it was because they explored what it truly means to be batman; physically and mentally
And yet most of the live action remakes ive seen only take the "it looks more realistic and gritty" while forgetting the point that YOURE SUPPOSED TO EXPLORE SOMETHING NEW

I feel like the anime lacks an external conflict. The witches from madoka magica are a genius decision because even before the reveal about them it just gives so many new options for plot to happen whenever the decide to fully work together and so the anime doesn't need to force them to act out of character just for drama. even in anime where its 100% characters fighting each other there is external pressure, for example: Fate zero, in that anime all the fights and drama are inbetween the characters themselves, but its all driven by the desire to get a wish from the holy grail which is the external pressure giver in that anime. im not saying its impossible to make a good story with only internal conflicts, but i am saying its extremely hard and that i haven't seen anything like that in the past

Site is an anime I found terrible but also a bit entertaining to watch because of it. There are so many plot holes, stupid decisions, over-exaggerated suffering that starting a certain point, I had fun watching the stupidness of the anime. The anime is just bad and overall, the serie mostly felt like pure torture porn.
However, for some reason that I don't remember, I then decided to read the manga. And surprise, I actually liked it at first. I was still stupidly edgy but I realized that most of the plot holes and stupid decisions of the anime came from content being cut from the adaptation. But looking back at it, I honestly think I just gaslighted myself into thinking it was good because it was slightly better than the anime because when I got to the part that wasn't adapted, it was again just terrible. To make things short, homophobia, transphobia ( which is a shame because the trans character was actually not too badly written at first and it's rare to have openly trans character in anime ), Alabama moment plot twist, terrible moral ( basically ripoff madoka but without the build-up to the "hope is good" moral ), plot twist where the manga is actually the sequel to the author previous terrible manga ( mahou shoujo of the end, a fun read but it's quite terrible ), more questionable fanservice, some of the worst manga panel I've ever seen ( can't even call that drawing ), and probably much more.
I do think that there is a worth in MSsite, mostly because I personally think that there's worth in watching shows that fail at being something and why they failed at it. But there are also a lot of interesting ideas ( that sadly ended up being poorly executed ) that manage to make the show interesting. But hey, at least the manga is where the "Please stop saying dumb things" meme image came from, so it manage to do something funny.

So yes, it is totally useless, it actually make the story worse and it's just there for saying "IT'S ALL CONNECTED"

I have so many things to say about this property my comment would be SO long. I used to make fan content for MGS and while the memories I made with others are fond, the property downgraded. I will say that the anime ending is MUCH better than the manga ending. It is a fucking mess.

I had never considered watching Magical Girl Site because frankly "What if thing but *dark* thing?" is incredibly boring to me.
That said, I am incredibly glad to have learned, from you, that they have a child's underwear act as a magical artifact! Now I can refuse to watch it on _moral_ grounds, like a true artiste!

I mean, I loved Magical Girl Apocalypse and I Made the Wrong Person A Magical Girl, but this story was too suffering-indulgent and edgy. Did I read the manga? Yes, but albeit reluctantly. Lots of magical girl anime these days try too hard to replicate the success of Madoka Magica, and a lot of them almost never have that magic spark Madoka had.

I never finished the show but if u wanna know what else happens:
To survive the storm u need to have a filled up stick but sticks shorten ur lifespan so a filled up stick kills u. Also the brother steals the underwear stick and there’s a whole team of girls

I’m sad, there’s so many things from this show that, in my opinion, had a lot of potential, and I love some the designs (the eyes, and gun mostly) and the morality questions, and some of the powers, like one of the good characters being able to control people which is a morally questionable power and one usually seen by villains… it almost makes me want to read the manga (which is equally if not more garbage) just to make references and do it better.

In my case, this anime is exceptional for me and I have nothing to reproach it for. I look for anime with a fairly heavy atmosphere, mixing the epic and the emotional, this anime manages to do this. Just like Shakugan No Shana and that's why they are my two favorite anime. Am I going to change my mind because people don't like one or the other? Never !

Last time I tried to sum this up it was a garbled mess so I want to articulate things better. This show is to magical girls what The Boys specifically the comic was to superhero’s.
The Boys comic is meant to be a cynical deconstruction of Superhero’s made by a man whose admits he hates superheroes. It’s a dumpster fire of sex violence immature humor (like Hewies first Supe kill was a perv that shoved a hamster up his ass) and poor taste pastiches of iconic hero’s. Inspite of that there were legitimately good ideas such as how the vought and the supes often spin the situations around them like a big sex party weekend they throw every summer is covered up as being part of a big crossover event you’d see from Marvel and DC. But it’s all barely explored in favor of more shock.
This show feels like that being more interested in being as fucked up as possible and deriving humor from mocking it’s genre (magic underwear anyone) almost if if the creator made it to spite magical girl fans and people with good taste.

    • @casualfanatic4217
      @casualfanatic4217 Год назад +2

Yes, exactly. That’s a perfect comparison. The Boys comics was just a creator venting his hate for superheroes in the most nonsensical and tasteless way possible with no real reason. The Boys TV show is a commentary on not just superheroes but the entertainment industry. It handles themes of sexual assault, work environment and god complex with understanding and respect. The themes were the cake and the blood was just filling

I am a big fan of GORE and stuff like that, but honestly when Kosame sh herself, Kiyoharu didn't liked hug her all she said "are you cutting again" and then she says she wants to kill her bullies, i mean sh needs to be taken seriously.
