- How To Make The Best Welsh Rarebit.
I took a little road trip into stunning Pembrokeshire in south wales, UK, to seek out artisan producers to make this world renowned and much loved Welsh Dish. Starting with a great, traditional, Farmhouse made cheddar cheese, from Pant Mawr cheesemakers, in the shadow of the Preseli hills/mountains. Then onto one of the best bakery's in the area for my bread, Watkins of Kilgetty, and then i sourced a fantastic ale from the Gwaun Valley Brewery in Fishguard at a local farm shop, so i had great local produce, then i just had to make it. Welsh Rarebit, Using Local Welsh Ingredients, it doesn't get more welsh than that...Enjoy.

I've tried this this morning for breakfast, EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU, IT WAS A HIT!!!!!!!! And also, what a splendid video, showing the city and the trees and the streets, wonderful!!! Welsh rarebit 100/100!!!!!!!!!! Love from Italy!!!!
What a great video. Wonderful supporting the local produce on yr travels too. Respect :)
How cool that he straight away takes you through their whole range and gives you a taste of each. I’d definitely buy my favourite with service like that!
Love when you talk with the locals. I wish we could have heard from that grandma at Watkins.
I know, some people dont like being on camera talking thou, but she has been there a long time, oh...and the jam doughnuts were like crack...
she looks like she's been working there since it opened
Since 8am??
no in 1920
I agree completely. What she has forgotten about bread puts what I know about bread to shame, certainly.
I lived in Wales for 3 years as a student. Best days of my life, this video made me feel so nostalgic. I'm going to book myself a few days away for a welsh road trip soon. I LOVE rarebit!
I envy your life. "I want to make Welsh Rarebit, let's go out to Wales and get the best Welsh ingredients to do it". Keep it up.
Beautiful country, Wales, I am from Chester originally so I recall North Wales very fondly, Anglesy & Llandudno for holidays nice memories.
Same here , from liverpool , we used to love Wales , and Chester too was a nice place , love the river there
Absolutely loved this. The beautiful Welsh countryside, the cheese factory, magnificent beach and your amazing cheese on toast.
Scott, thank you sincerely. This recipe is grand and I liked granny in the bakery especially. She was handling the loaf like a pro. Respect.
A bit late to the show, but I really enjoyed this video. I am an american viewer who lived in Wales twice growing up and actualy got my "O" levels in Fishguard back in 1980. Lived in Pembrokeshire for a total of seven years and hope to come back some day. Cheers Scott and thanks!
My maternal grand father was a physician, not a cook. One day, he got stuck "sitting" my 10 year old brother and my 12 year old self. He made "Welsh Rarebit." Some nondescript cheddar, Coleman's mustard flour, Worcestershire and put it on some "Wonder bread" toast. It shaped my taste for a decade but put me on the path to discover (and make) new food
Here in Texas we wondered what your Welsh Rarebit really was! Thanks Scott! Ours is an occasional dish here but still appreciated.
I love your channel. I live in wyoming in the states and hunt constantly and its nice to see videos on new things to try that aren't known over here. like toad in a hole. that was amazing
I am such a Yank, I started to panic when you pulled out on the 'wrong' side of the road. Thank you for the video! and putting the links to the cheese and brewery. Enjoy your working vacation.
I left the countryside, where I grew up, for a nice appartment in the suburbs....and after watching vids like this, I know I made the wrong decision. I wanna go back to the old little farm of my youth...and the guy from the bank can say whatever the hell he wants about that...back to the roots!!!
Do it Boo 😊
WoW you've got greater food options in that small town than we do in most of NYC.
Love the solar panels on the roof tops too.
I could watch you drive around this beautiful countryside all day.
Good morning, a nice way to start the day. I got homesick, seeing all that. Just lovely
Love the cheese making process! Welsh rarebit may not be a big favorite in the southern States, but I grew up on it, and I can't wait to try your version. Have a great weekend! Cheers!
This isn't doing my late night hunger pangs nay good! lol. Good job Scott, looks delicous 👍
Cheers Adam, much appreciated mate.
I absolutely love the SRP, I moved into my own house and have been dabbling with cooking but since watching these videos I feel I've learned alot. Big thumbs up!!
Hello from Boston, Mass, USA Scott! I've been going through your old videos and I love them especially the butchery. Thanks for doing what you do!
OH. MY.LORD!!!!! The Absolute very best WR. recipe I've ever seen !! Also beautiful camera work! Thanks ever so much
that bread is unbelievable. old skool at its best
From the USA and LOVED the journey! Thanks!
your videos are such a pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing, friend
Hey Scott, relatively new subscriber here in California and I'm loving the videos. I'm addicted to the back catalog and enjoy getting the British perspective on things. keep up the good work!
My Grandmother who lived in England for a bit after WWI before she emigrated to America would make this for us children...ah good memory. Thanks. Best
Love it when you do these, the bacon sarnie roadtrip one of my fave vids scotty 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Well done Scott, I knew there was a reason I liked your vids, my Family is originally from Wales. Came here to the states and landed in the coal mines of Kentucky and spread out from there. Alway gives me a nostalgic feeling seeing these recipes. Thanks !
We really dig your road trips. It's great to see you talking with all the people you meet.
Everett and Christine
My, that looks good. I love shops like the local produce deli where you bought the ale. Wales is one of my favourite places in the world.
Its nice to see you travel around. Connecting food with local people(particularly when it is traditional food) is important context. For us foreigners, its a particularly nice addition.
You crack me up. Thanks pumping out videos frequently, really enjoy watching them.
"Cheese on toast that rides a motor bike. Its got a leather jacket, its in a heavy metal band, and has got a supermodel girlfriend." I love it.
Not too speak ill of American cuisine, but what would a grilled cheese with a Kraft single and Wonder Bread be described as: "Wearing floods and a pocket protector. Just got its lunch money stolen and no girl will give him the time of day"? Great video as always!
Made my day!
@@woodsplitter3274 I dont think I've ever had kraft cheese and wonder bread together in my life...
I never ate white/bleached bread growing up at all, and havent had krafts since primary school. So you're guess is good as mine.. lol
@@iRTehSecks i shouldn't disparage it too much. It's comfort food for a lot of people. Grilled cheese goes good with a can of condensed soup like tomato. It's also an easy recipe that a responsible kid can make by themselves.
What a great day, relaxing and end with a great treat. Never heard of Welsh Rarebit but I think I will give it a try.
Scott, since you have such a large North American following, it's good for them to hear how Worcestershire sauce should be pronounced. As a Brit living in Canada, it's hilarious what people come out with trying to say it. I've got to the point where I can tell someone is just about to say it, then realize they are in the presence of an Englishman, and get all self conscious and start stuttering, so I often interrupt and say it for them. You should see the relief on their face. Priceless.
77grundy in my kitchen we called it "what's this here sauce".
I live in New Orleans and that's how we say it.
77grundy I live in Worcester,Mass. The way I've heard is W-stir-sheer,the double 'r' sound throws us a bit off.
Yes - apart from the fact he went with Worcestershire Sauce first then went all lazy and started saying Worcester Sauce...
+ 77grundy " it's good for them to hear how Worcestershire sauce should be pronounced."
How the hell did wor-ces-ter-shire become woo-ster-shur? what happened to all the other letters and syllables? ;-)
I love your channel! I live here in the states (very rual area in the Pacific Northwest) and your channel is constantly giving me meal ideas that speak in volume to country life. Thanks for everything you do, keep inspiring!
Cheese, bread , ale and beautiful scenery.... I could ask for nothing more
beautiful sky
Cheese toast for grown up.
I absolutely love this stuff.
Looks delicious. Scott your classic British accent just made this all more enjoyable. Cheers from the United States!
First, that opening scene is a thing of beauty. Second, you're a crazy man driving on the wrong side of the road like that!! And that's what I call cheese on toast. Stunnin'!
I really enjoyed this video. Shopping for local goods, and showing the drive so I almost feel like I'm there with you. Well done sir!
start of video, I almost screamed "STOP!...you're driving on the wrong side!!!"...then I remembered you're in the UK and I'm in Guam...lol...keep the videos coming...Hafa Adai!
Looks delicious, and what a beautiful countryside!
I have never eaten or even heard of anything so wonderful. Dang and Dang again!
Lovely. So lovely.
I fucking love that first guy's accent! Makes me wish I was born in Wales instead of Norfolk xD
Scott, this is newest favorite channel. Keep the goods comong. From Wichita, Kansas
Zowie! That is the most incredible recipe for Welsh Rabbit I have ever seen. Gotta try it!
Man thats a lovely place.
thanks for taking us to the west country
lol I was reading a book set in I think regency era when one of the characters got some rare bit(can't remember if it was welsh or not ) and I thought it was some kind of rabbit meat dish, it took me a long time to learn it was a cheese dish lol
Strewth Scott. You are making me home sick. My mission tomorrow is to make that tasty Welsh Rarebit which my mum used to make for us when we were kids. Thanks a mil mate.,
I mentioned the other day on one of your other videos that one of my favourites was putting Worcestershire Sauce on my rarebit and my cheese on toast too. Only thing is I sprinkle on before putting it under the grill. Every person I have introduced it to over the years has loved it. Delicious.
My mind went immediately Monty Python's Cheese Shop sketch :)
I enjoy it when you go outside mate, Please keep doing it
of course i love the butchery videos, but being from the States i loved getting to see a bit of The countryside and talking with the locals!
Love rarebit. True peasant food done right!
Great video! Thank you from Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
I read the title as Welsh Rabbit and kept wondering when that was going to show up, but this looks delicious!
Thanks for taking us with you!
Interesting. The Welsh Rarebit recipe I go with uses egg yokes instead of flour. I guess it is an "availability" thing. But this is worth trying, as I do like a bit of Rarebit. And knowing how to make it without eggs is a plus.
You Sir, are brilliant! Now to reproduce this in BC Canada!
Love the recipe for, what seems to be, the greatest of cheese toasts. But, the main drive of my comment is... for the love of god... how gorgeous is the Welsh countryside? I mean, I have always wanted to visit Cymru because I'm an Arthurian nerd... but, now, I want to visit because of the sheer beauty! Keep up the good work. Love the channel!
"french muck" ha! good one! I was surprised not to see a traditional cottage loaf at the bakery; hope to try it when I go there in October- great video with awesome countryside
Stunningly great video
Your videos are wonderful! I love getting to see recipes that I don't normally encounter, and this looks crazy delicious. And who doesn't want cheese toast that rides a motorcycle and has a supermodel girlfriend?? No one, that's who.
I need to go there!!
Hate to show my American ignorance, but for a while there I was looking for you to buy a rabbit to make "Welsh Rabbit" it me it was funny especially since I can but did not read the caption "Welsh Rarebit" too many Bugs Bunny cartoons growing up I guess. Love your channel, subscribed and looking forward to trying some of your recipes and butchering techniques when I finally get a chance to go hunting.
I came here after watching an episode of "Gomer Pyle" called "Welsh Rarebit Fiend." I wanted to see how to make it after hearing about it so much on the show. I remember when I was a child watching that episode thinking they were saying Welsh Rabbit.
Rule Britannia, None of that French muck........ Perfect delivery mate, the real deal. Now, you got time to hit that beach for Razor Clams lad or what?. 🎣 Keep on trucking. Cheers Moose.
In my visits to the UK I found some of their classic dishes truly delicious and inspiring and the pastries were the best
That looks Great!! I wanna' live there!!
YAY! How did you know Welsh Rarebit is on my list of recipes I wanted to learn? This looks rock n' roll, baby! (p.s. -- thank you for introducing the word "shufti" into my life. I use it all the time now, lol)
Suzanne Baruch I remember you...you asked your butcher for his special piece of meat....
So, how did the date go....you got the meat, you so hard desired? 😂
A lady never tells! 😇
Shufti is from the Arabic, "to see'. There are a lot of words in common use, both sides of the pond, that hark back to the days fo the British Empire. Shampooh, bungalow, pajamas, trek, etc., to name a few.
Suzanne Baruch ladies never tell... ? Be that as it may...I seem to be less lucky, regarding the discretion of certain ladyfriends....but than again those ladies may have been tramps...🙃
That was absolutely epic!
Can't believe colemans haven't given you a life times free supply Scott , looked lovely
That looks Fantastic !
I'm going to try this out tomorrow
Oh my god! My most favourite thing evaaaar! Drooling so bad!
Now that’s proper! I’m following your recipe from here on! Liked and subbed!
agree about lea &perrins and colmans 2 of the best foods going!
I'm not even tasting ANY of the cheeses, I'm just watching and yet I'm still in cheese heaven here! I definitely need to add Wales to my places to visit ... Bucket List!
Now THIS is real Welsh Rarebit!! Thanks!
I'm pretty oblivious about the Welsh in general as I been born in the middle east and currently reside in canada for my education. However, I can tell that from the ingredients this thing is going to be insanely delicious. Can never go wrong with cheese, English mustard, and beer hahaha.
found this channel purely by youtube recommendation. please do swing through chicago brother if you want to have a bite or a drink. makes me want to head out to your hood real bad and check things out. this is proper cooking!
been watchin for a while Scott, I really enjoy your productions. Keep it up!
I just ordered the cheese online from the place you filmed. I love a poached egg on top.
Great recipe Scott, thanks
Very nice indeed!
That looks great mate.
Cracking looking dish Scott.....again!
Wish we had smellovision!
Like the chopping board.
Were, by chance, did you get it from?
Keep the video's coming baby.
When we were kids my mom used to make us Welsh Rarebit and it consisted of scrambled eggs with some grated cheese stirred in to it. Were we short changed and should I complain to her? If we were really hungry she used to make us beans on toast with poched eggs on top........awesome. Mike
Oh man, THIS is where I want to vacation!
my granddad used malt vinegar instead of beer but I loved your consistency, some times it was rubber and sometimes we had a thin soup like sauce!
Need some decent mustard, none of that French muck! Love it Scott! If only I could get Coleman's in NE Thailand.
When I lived in Bangkok, not now because of the political curfuffling going on about coronavirus and other stuff from the so-called "government" (never liked the concept of Thainess that he introduced, anyway), I used to get it at LOTUS-TESCO. Also, if you have friends in BKK, get them to buy some at Villa or Foodland and mail it to you.
'nuf sed. plamuk aka travellingchef.
Just done everything like in the video .... and yammie!!!!!!!! Instead of your very nice cheese I used a very nice dutch cheese (also mature). Only the beer was not available, so I used San Miguel (we are in Portugal right now). My husband wants it again :)
Yeah Scott! Field Trip!
You have such lovely countryside there Scott!
And I wish I had smell-o-vision :)
Looks good and fastening. I am all in!
Big thumbs up for Pembrokshire!
I love bitter beer! Out here in Northern California we brew with a lot of hops making our beer bitter and chewy. We make some damned good stouts too but more commonly IPAs. In San Francisco we have the Anchor Brewing Company which makes a steam and is my favorite beer. I remember my first surfing trip to Fiji from Los Angeles. Onboard I was downing Fiji Bitter in the large oil cans and the attendant got a little nervous until I assured her I was a happy drunk (and I didn't disappoint). She and another were having fun flirting with me and laughing. Unbeknownst to them my girlfriend was across the aisle in an empty row and was having a giggle watching me in action after about 10-12 (they kept bringing a new one every 20 minutes). She was my girlfriend on the flight in and fiancee on the flight home and kinda knew it was gonna happen. That was our first of many worldwide surfing trips together.
I had never seen Rarebit made before. That looks absolutely delicious! I am with you in the more Worcestershire the better.
