    2005-08 truly was a golden age of DVD releases. Especially for TV shows. If it didn't come out during that window, the chances of it getting released afterwards was slim.

    Being a film noir fanatic, I have seen all of these multiple times. My favorite is Fallen Angel. It is interesting the style each studio had in creating a film noir movie. For example, MGM film noir's had good production values, but we're cleaned up and quite tame. 20th Century Fox, on the other had, would push the envelope with undertones of homosexuality, necrophelia and beastiality.

    Glad to see this overview. Hopefully you can go more in depth at a later date on the titles that really grabbed you. I have a bout 10 movies under this banner. I always pick them up when I find them for the right price. In my experience Richard Widmark and Noir is always a win notably Kiss of Death.

So, I'm not planning on getting them all, but there are a few, like Fallen Angel, Nightmare Alley, and Street With No Name, on my wish/hunt list. Thank you so much for going through the entire line. I have the complete set and there are some great films in there but quite a few are not really noir.
    Blu-ray versions of some of these films exist but for instance Laura looks far too glossy, bright and perfect and I prefer the DVD. Film Noir definitely benefits from some nicks, scratches and fluctuations in brightness.

    Good luck picking up the titles you don't have. I managed to complete the collection about 5 years ago, like you I have some now on Blu-ray but I won't be selling any of the collection. FYI Nightmare Alley does not have Blu-ray release, it's scheduled for a Blu-ray release here in the UK early next year; it's a top notch noir. The Warner Noir and Gangster collections are also worth having.

I do have all four volumes of Warner's Gangster collection and the first volume of Warner's Noir collection, though I think all four from that first Noir set have now been upgraded to Blu-ray. The other volumes in the Warner Noir set are way out of my price range now, but here's hoping they get either re-pressed or upgraded to Blu-ray too. The Warner Archive Blu-ray of Gun Crazy is one of the best releases of last year, in my opinion.

    Regarding pawn shop finds, I've found some gold over the years but it's getting slim. I hit up a few today that I haven't been to in a while. One used to have a ton of movies, today, they had about 12 titles. The others were low and clearing out most of what they had. This has been a trend all year. Fewer and fewer are even accepting DVDs/Blu-rays at all. Today, when I asked at the one shop if they still sold movies you would have thought I asked if they had any 8-tracks. Strange how the formats can still take in billions of dollars in global sales (albeit a lot less than they did even two years ago) but still be considered dead.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  4 года назад +1

      Great points! My pawn shops are really blowing stuff out, as they don't want all those DVDs clogging up their inventory. The last time I went into a pawn shop, maybe three months ago, the DVDs were all fifty cents each and I found a few titles, including one or two that were out of print. But as I checked out, the lady behind the counter told me what we all suspect: "we just want these gone." It's so true, for a media form that still brings in tons of revenue, it sure does seem undesirable by so many people.

      It's crazy what some of these are going for! Even before Disney bought Fox, most of these had gone out of print. I think I mentioned in the video that I had picked some up during a Black Friday sale on Fox's website (but I might have edited that part out to make the video leaner) and they had been clearing them out even then. I guess they were considered dead stock. So as much as Disney is responsible for these movies now, even Fox seemed to have moved on.

      @@CerealAtMidnight Catalog releases will never have mass appeal, but in an age where everything is increasingly digitized, and where the powers-that-be exert more control over their film libraries, collecting physical media is slowly becoming an act of film-preservation for those kinds of movies. Unless they are picked up and issues by boutique labels (who are doing holy work), it's up to the serious collector to preserve them. Which is a bit crazy.

    Funny, aside from Daisy Kenyan I have all of the titles you don't have (in fact, I started collecting them because I saw Nightmare Alley on the shelf and I was dying to see it after reading Danny Peary's review in the Cult Movies book).
    Okay, story time: these retailed for $14.99 on release but Best Buy and Borders (remember them?) would sell them for $9.99. I would go down to those stores on a weekly basis and pick them up - which led to me getting the Warners Film Noir box sets and others. The Fox releases were like potato chips to me - can't buy just one. Good times...
    Oh, and it's interesting I Wake Up Screaming and Vicki are so close number-wise as the second is a remake of the first.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  4 года назад

      These retailed for 15 dollars? That's an incredible bargain, and makes me like and respect them even more. Fox didn't just dump old transfers on a disc and push them out, they really brought the preservationist aspect to them, with all the commentaries, booklets, and other features. So for them to retail them at 15 dollars is really wonderful. Imagine that: a major studio wanting to price their releases low enough so that enthusiasts could own them on their shelves and collect them all. Things sure have changed! By the way, I have the first WB noir set and love it, but the others were out of print and too expensive by the time I got into them. I guess it's just about familiarity, more than anything. I think black and white movies are gorgeously shot and bring a whole different aesthetic. I mean, Hitchcock chose to shoot Psycho in black and white when color had long since become the standard for A-pictures from a major studio. But I guess anyone born in 1997 is likely not all that interested in Psycho, and to them, 80s movies feel like they're from a hundred years ago. There's interesting things happening as this new generation comes up, and I think they have to work harder than ever before to get into some of these stuff. They're the streaming generation, and Netflix is not a great resource for classic movies. I think I've mentioned before that I work with a guy who is 24 and considers himself a major movie fan, but he's not familiar with anything before the '90s and really only watches what's on Netflix. Things have changed.

      Glad to help! She’s one of my favorite bad good actresses. Check out her last films “Hot Rods to Hell” and “Skyjacked!”.

    RIP Fox, Disney will officially destroy another good company.

      We will see. It's all speculation, but it seems like Disney wanted Fox's intellectual properties. What they do with the film library is what I think we're all waiting to see. They've already begun vaulting Fox movies that were getting repertory screenings, and have made no forward movement to get Fox's classics on any of the streaming services, let alone on disc again. I will say this: Disney does cooperate with companies like Mill Creek Entertainment for licensing home media. In the last year or so, they've allowed Mill Creek to release some titles that fall outside the traditional Disney umbrella. Maybe they'll start including some Fox classics in those deals.

    Dude, stop doing that, at the beginning i was afraid you would drop the pile. You're not good for my heart 😁
    As for the fate of the movies... Forget it, Disney will burry them and we'll never see them again. Except the odd ones that will be bought by Kino and the likes

      Lol. I can’t resist. But if I were ever to drop them, I certainly would reshoot the intro. Hope that eases your anxiety! And I hope for the best with these movies, but am prepared for the worst. That’s why we buy this stuff, ultimately. So we don’t have to depend on studios, who do not seem to have our best interests in mind.
