Before anyone comments, yes, I know I miss pronounce the band's name throughout. That's just how I read it when I was first getting into them, and now it's stuck. Y'all know what I mean when I say the band's name so sit down :)
srs. like, maybe, "rememberances", he repeatedly says "decemberances" dafuq. I'm all for making fun of this genre, but maaaaaan does this hurt, because he's not even trying to make fun... of how hard Decemberists try. Great band, btw. They try too hard.
I must admit that, while being aware of The Decemberists, I have never really listened to them. Great review and I will be sure to check them out! Cheers!
Thanks to this video I FINALLY decided to dive into this band. So far I’m only listening to the debut. What do you think of Neutral Milk Hotel? I fee like they could’ve influenced these guys
Terrible World/Beautiful World didn't grab me the first couple times I listened to it, so I shelved it for a couple years. I came back to last year and fell in love! It's been rising in my ranking since, so I think it's one that needs to hit you at the right time.
I avoided this bunch for some dumb reason...took your review and said, "what the hell." Listened to their first, and the lyrics are fantastic! Yeah, Notes, you sold me again.
I almost entirely agree with this list, I just would swap a couple of albums. This band is amazing and is so consistent with their output. Hazards of Love has so much power and emotion, and the guests are amazing, especially Shara Nova, the Queen.
As one of your list videos with the highest MPS (mispronunciations per second), it's one of your best. Really enjoyed it. Somewhere along the line I lost touch with this band. You inspired me to dive back in to their discography. IMHO, On the Bus Mall is one of the best indie songs ever written.
Agree with a lot of your points, Castaways hit me at the exact right time and place as a teen in the early 2000s, still have a big love for the band. Met Collin after a Picaresque show in San Francisco super nice guy. I still have his guitar pick he threw into the crowd after Mariners Revenge. I fell out of touch with them after the Crane Wife, then got pulled back in with the King is Dead, loved that album, I’d place it higher than 6 but for sure they’ve never been as good as Castaways/Her Majesty.
I have the same #1 and #2. Hazards of Love is incredible. Probably a minority view that it is their best album but I love the proggy feel. Felt like this was a real risk for the band that they haven't really taken in the albums since then. They peaked on this one.
Great review. I picked up a copy of their first album in a flea shop having heard of the band but knowing nothing about that album or their music and really liked it, so thanks for giving their music some context. The structure of 'Picaresque' (not 'picturesque') is suggested by its title, which means: relating to an episodic style of fiction dealing with the adventures of a rough and dishonest but appealing hero.
I've been listening to The Hazards of love on the live album last Christmas. Amazing album. Nice to see you enjoy them so much. I would place Her majesty in the number two spot though. Excellent album.
What do you think of the newest one, where would you place it? "As it is Ever Was..... " Personally i have found it to be a VERY strong album, i have been listening to it constantly (front to back each time, no skipping) its starting to move up in the ranking for me honestly - its easily the best since The King is Dead for sure
I'm going to have a review of it up in the next couple of weeks. It's good, I like it better than their last two albums as it has a more consistent vibe to it, but I was hoping for just a bit more **oumph* out of it.
Thank you! A new band to discover!... But for now I listen to the new album of Tame Impala after having listened to the album of Mariana Semkina, the singer of Iamthemorning ... 2 albums released today.
Ok so I promise I mean this in jest, I'm completely joking around here and totally respect your opinion, but also screw you for saying "Red Right Ankle" is a weak track lmao. That song is intimate and heartfelt and bare and their delivery is just right, they knew to keep it gentle. I get that it's slow and has no drums or percussion and it can feel like a drag if you're not paying attention to it, but I find it's a song that opens up if you really listen to it. I guess it didn't age well in the sense that it uses a term for Roma people that we now more commonly understand to be offensive, but it doesn't sound like that's your criticism. But again, I totally respect your opinion and I promise I'm just joking around with the "screw you" thing, I'm just having a strong reaction because I personally love that song. I also totes disagree with your opinion that Picaresque doesn't have a sense of identity. I think its storytelling is its identity; the stories are almost all these wild and grandiose tales (and when they're more humble, namely on "Eli, The Barrow Boy" and "Of Angels and Angles", the musical arrangement gets pared down accordingly, which I think helps add to the sense of cohesion because when it's different, it's really different). I'd also place Picaresque as in a three-way tie for first place, with Castaways and The Crane Wife lmao, I seriously can't choose one out of the three to call my favorite because they're all just so good. Great video!

I actually like how you pronounce it lol
Your mispronunciations make your reviews unique 😊
Your number one is also mine. If you do a full length album review on this album I am SO in. Great video!!
Decembrances?
2windswords 🙄

The King is Dead #6 ??????? What???????
Finally someone who has heard of the Decemberists

Agree with your list. A great band, excellent musicians and Colin Meloy is a hell of a song composer. Love them.

strange i know the person who made the tain's music video
Please tell them they did an amazing job, even if it looks like Cuchulainn is blowing Ferdiad in that one part

King crimson worst to best. If you are worried about it being taken down just don’t include any of their music.
