  • This short video explains the difference between the slur and the tie and how they are used in music. With both symbols looking exactly the same it is very common for beginners to get the two symbols muddled up. This video aims to clarify the difference between them.

    Great but it would've been more helpful (for me), if we could hear the examples of the above.

      In the case of the slur, someone who plays (or sings - slurs can equally apply to sung notes) the notes and leaves noticeable gaps between the notes marked with one (i.e. plays/sings the notes disjointed or “staccato”) would be breaking the slur’s instruction to play/sing the notes smoothly, with no such gaps between them.
      In the case of the tie, in the example of the minim/half-note (the name depending on what part of the English-speaking world you are in) tied to the crotchet/quarter-note, the audio of that would just sound the same as if it were a dotted minim/dotted half-note; the note would be held for as long as the player/singer had completed the entirety of the aggregate total of all of the tied notes’ values.

    Thanks! I understand the difference between a slur and a tie. But what is the difference between a slur and a phrase line? (Or are these the same thing?!)

  • @infinitefretboard
    @infinitefretboard Год назад

    How about phrase markings? As a classical guitarist, I've played a lot of pieces with ambiguous markings. In some cases, you appear to get a slur over several notes only to later find out that it is merely to group notes into a phrase. Usually having multiple notes across different strings indicates they are not to be slurred, however there's some cases in which slurs are done across different strings.

    Really good explanation of slurs and ties. Goes into a lot of the variations and edge conditions that are usually left unexplained. Very thorough, which is a rarity. Playing a demonstration would have been a great improvement.

  • @jeorgedegagne8064
    @jeorgedegagne8064 8 лет назад

    Question, I have come across notes D-D-B with the slur in the same bar. What does that make this? A tie or slur? There is no tie added for the two Ds. This would look just like the last bar of notes in this video but just without the tie. Anyway great video, that makes a lot of sense.Just wondering how slurred notes like this should be played.

  • @flappyj93
    @flappyj93 10 лет назад +1

    Thanks, really well explained! I have a question: If ties extend accidentals across bar lines, how would you write it if you wanted to just slur a sharped/flatted note to the natural? E.g. slur from Eb to E (as opposed to tying Eb to another Eb) - would you just put a natural sign on the second note?

    • @Abunchanada
      @Abunchanada 10 лет назад

      hey, someone else who knows music here. That is correct: unless you indicate that the next note is a natural, two tied notes (even across a bar) will hold the same accidental, whether that is sharp flat double-sharp double-flat etc.
      Though it has been two months since you asked that question, so I'm guessing you already found the answer by now hopefully :P

    excellent. really helpful. what about if the slur is on top of a phrase? when should it be on top?

    • @Texy88
      @Texy88 7 лет назад

      That tends to happen whenever there are multiple tracks on one stave (i.e. when there are parts with stems up and parts with stems down); in such cases you do tend to see the slurs at the top of the stems going up so that they do not conflict with the note-heads of the notes with stems down.

  • @yaseminplaceboful
    @yaseminplaceboful 4 года назад

    UPS there went "all my understanding out the window": I thought I could easily spot the difference between ties ans slurs, until At 3:24, he says that ties always starts and ends on the note-head, but at 5:10 he shows a slur under the tie, from note-head to note-head. So, as my little brain can figure out...... THE ONLY way to SEE the difference between ties and slurs would be that ties are only used for notes that has the same pitch. PLEASE correct me if I understand this the wrong way. And finally: This individual = "musictheoryguy" have a VERY nice and easy explanatory voice, hence very skilled at explaining. Impressive indeed.

    What if there is a slur in between two of the same notes?

    • @Omar-ir4gk
      @Omar-ir4gk 5 лет назад

      Because you can't play two of the exact same notes logato. It would be playing it twice. Logato is for different notes. Though you can play a notes twice in a slur but they will not be beside each other and will have a different note or notes between them.

    5:00 what's beaming?

    • @YourOnlineMusicTeacher
      @YourOnlineMusicTeacher 5 лет назад

      Beaming is having these eighth notes written under one joining horizontal line, a beam. You know that sometimes these eighth notes can be single, right? Meaning they would have a flag attached.

      A tie is possible only between notes of the same pitch. The tied notes may be in one measure or in 2 separate (next) measures. For example, the last note in a measure is C, and the first note in the next measure is also C, they can be tied if desired. But if between the 2 Cs there are other notes, those Cs can't be tied.
      Hope it is clear.
