It is only my personal opinion and I don't argue about specific names or values of directors working for ROH or any big opera company, but in general: opera should be more about singers not stage/artistic directors. Nowadays I found dangerous trend to focus more on ideas and inspirations imposed by directors in which creative possibilities of the artist are very much limited - in addition to issues related to selection of the cast in modern operas, where voice values are less and less a priority. Most important, in such conditions, is effect that was founded by director. Suffers art - because everything on stage is happening not from invention of the cast/artists, but one person who manages the project. Singers are becoming more like performers not creative artist in a way we know from the past.... I think we need more (desire) personalities on stage, less directors modern theater. With no offense to anyone here. :) Anyway I am very thankful to ROH, for this clip and wonderful interview. It makes great impression on me, and make me feeling being a part of a cultural community. Most stage directors now days are completely illiterate in opera or music in general.
