Great review! Agree with you, the Sun Princess was amazing & so much better than the older ships which we found pretty boring..one friend called the Regal the "Cemetery" Princess, but the Sun was much younger & more vibrant IMO..... ....My wife & I were on the 5 night cruise 10/14/- 10/19 and we loved it...BLOWS away the Royal Class IMO...first, the cabins- OMG...Finally Princess has put glass enclosed showers in all the cabins..no more of those awful clingy & slippery curtains..I shave in the shower..this was the first time in my Princess cruise ship history that I didn't make a mess after my shower, lol..and FINALLY a sofa couch in all balcony cabins, not just mini suites on up! On the Regal & Enchantment we had NOTHING in the cabin...just a bed & desk..one cabin had a little 2 seater loveseat, which was worthless..couldn't lie down on it...the other cabin was soooo tight...On both the Regal & Enchantment when we walked in with our carry ons & bags, my first thought was.."where do we put our stuff down?"..my wife said, "where do we eat?"..I actually went down to Guest Services and asked if maybe Princess gave us the wrong cabin...the guy checked and said, "no, you are in the right cabin"..I asked, "where do we eat if we order room service?"...he said..."you DON'T order room service in those cabins"...WOW!! ..I asked "where do we put our things?" ..he said, "I guess either on the floor or the bed"...wow again...BUT now on the Sun, what a difference! Catch By Rudi, Crown Grille, & Umai Teppanyaki were all great..Spellbound was a blast...shows all MUCH better than the Regal & Enchantment..not as good as RCI, NCL ( Tough to beat The Choir Of Man, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Hairspray, We Will Rock You, Grease, Million Dollar Quartet, etc..) or Disney IMO, but we were very pleased with the shows..Viva La Musica was best latino dancing & singing show we've seen...someone didn't like that some people didn't have a Spanish accent? Really?? That's their criticism??? How lame.. My wife is from Peru, and she LOVED the show, and yes, she was one of the gals that was brought onto the dance floor at the end...also, the Legacy band was very good..I am NOT a Princess fan in their entertainment in the past on the Crown, Regal & Enchanted Princess ships..one night on the Regal, the entire show was a lady sitting on a chair playing classical violin...OMG..terrible- my wife was asleep in 60 seconds, but I lasted almost 120 seconds, lol..another night on the Enchanted Princess, the show was "techno" music..techno music for people in their 50's, 60's, 70's & 80's??..About 60% of the crowd left within 20 minutes...again, awful..also the Piazza much improved..how nice to be able to SIT and see the show instead of having to stand by the railing all the time if you don't get a seat on that first floor on Royal ships..we already have booked another Sun Princess cruise for next Nov 2025, and I just booked the Star Princess for March 2026, 8 nights...welcome to the 21st century Princess!
Great review! I'm an avid Princess cruiser and, like you, love the older Grand class ships with the incredible promenade deck! I've been watching a lot of Sun Princess videos and this is one of the best! We're booked on Star Princess's 20 day repositioning cruise from Ft Lauderdale to Seattle in 2026. We went with the mini-suite and Princess Premier package but decided that upgrading to the Sanctuary Collection wasn't worth the $7000 cost. Can't wait for the cruise, especially with all of the sea days - 14 out of 20! What??? 😃
I finally booked our first Princess cruise on Royal, 7-night Mexican Riviera (Reserve mini-suite, forward wraparound veranda). Contemporary shows and entertainment are a plus, I think the cruise industry needs a line or two to seamlessly to move up to from the fun ships. Maybe that is Virgin for some, but it is not going to be everyone's taste. We chose Princess because the mini suites were half the price of HAL in the region, but Sun Princess' changes would have us considering the line on its own.
Thanks for the great review. I am on my 24th Princess cruise, a 33 day South Pacific cruise. Your review makes it clear I DO NOT want to sail on the Sun. I hope all the young hipsters Princess want to attract sail on her and leave the rest of the ships to regular Princess customers.
My husband and I are traveling on Sun in March and we are so so excited! I think the buffet on deck 9 makes so much sense and I love that it is full serve. To me, moving the buffet from the pool deck is a smart move, to cut down on folks walking through in swimming gear and all of that. Plus, Sun Princess has a ton of food options on the pool deck already, way more than other cruise lines who typically only have a grill option, so you really don't need any more food up on that deck anyways. I'm sad they moved Crown Grill because that venue looked stunning and we're not super interested in trying the Butcher's Block by Dario. But this was a great video!!
If we weren't in a suite this would have been one of the worst of all my 50 cruises. It was crowded in the public areas. As far as dining, the new hibachi restaurant is FABULOUS! Unfortunately, they couldn't honor our reservation that we made months ago for Crown Grill. Something wonky happened on that night and they had to turn away diners. The room we had was absolutely perfect. I was very pleased with it!
I was on seven day Sun Princess Oct. 19-26. Did not see any shows, since my husband uses a walker and could not wait 30-90 minutes to get a seat, despite we were elite and sanctuary. Beautiful ship and beautiful cabins, but most venues not able to handle the crowds. We love Princess, but may be ready to try other lines. Catch by Rudy was EXCELLENT!.
Thanks for the review of the updated Sun Princess. The ship and experience looks intriguing. For the Japanese restaurant, "Makoto" is pronounced more closely to Ma-Coat-Oh where 'Ma' is pronounced as in "mama". Truly, a very good name for a Japanese restaurant!
Hello Sherri, We enjoy your cruise videos very much. A real pleasure to watch. my wife & I have been cruising the Caribbean since 1999, all on Celebrity. We’re in our 60’s and cruise with another couple as well . We have our Jan, 2015 & 2016 booked on Celebrity Apex & Silhouette. We were just pricing our 2027 cruise and Celebrity’s pricing has increased substantially. Princess’s pricing is very appealing to us for 2017. We’ve watched your Sun & Regal Princess reviews. We’re looking for your thoughts on which ship for us? Would love to hear your feedback, since you’ve cruised both. The Regal looks nice as does the new Sun. The star would be a possibility for us too. Thanks Sherri 😊
You’ve got great taste in ships! I’m so excited for you. I think either ship would be a beautiful choice. Remind me, have you cruised with Princess before at all?
Thank you for your reply. We have never cruised Princess, only Celebrity. Just not sure which ship to go on. Your review of Regal was excellent, we are unsure about the shower curtain. Do you think Star would improve on the faults of Sun?
@ it’s possible. But the truth is that star is basically a carbon copy of sun. However, they have made a lot of changes on sun based on the knowledge that they have gained. So they basically moved around restaurants, etc. I usually like to advise people that if you like LARGER mega ships (Sun is BIG) and it’s your first cruise on Princess, Sun is actually a very good place to start. Then you can go back and try the older ships with Princess. I mean, regal really isn’t that old but it’s hard when you have been on one of the traditional ships to change it up. So my advice is to try sun first!
Just got off the Sun Princess. Probably won’t do it again. Not only is the than pleasant. Try being 80 years old and getting around? Oh let’s not forget about guest services. Seems like that was an afterthought at best. So much time is waisted standing in line down in the bottom of the ship. The international cafe was just about the same every day. Very little thought went in to the selection. When it’s the only after hours food venue except for room service. It was a huge failure. Most all of the venues are too small. Again, unless you want to waste a lot of time standing in Line before a show etc? The buffet was about a 6 1/2 out of 10. Lots of room for improvement. Why is the funny tasting orange juice different in the eatery than in the bars? Yes the ship overall was new and beautiful, but it doesn’t quite make up for the shortcomings. As for the crew, they did a phenomenal job. Absolutely amazing. Everyone shined. They were woefully understaffed and that’s a failure on the management in LA. Corporate needs to open their eyes and ears and listen to what people are saying, so hopefully the Star will have a chance.
It's not a great ship. I think they tried to make a Sun Princess version of the Celebrity Edge but at least made the stadium seating for all the shows that they think need to make this a more "contemporary" or "modern" ship, whatever that is supposed to mean. I mean Cirque type shows. At some point the aerialist will run its course and people will be bored with it. The Dome is too small and people are asked to leave it to put on a show. So, when making public relaxing areas show venues, you have to compromise. I like O'Malley's. One of the better ideas. So, yes, a traditional Irish pub is not contemporary yet distinguishes itself on the ship. Princess broke a lot of what didn't need fixing trying to be some new Princess. I dislike the atrium as a show room space. To each their own. I dislike what has happened to the Wheelhouse bar. The overall look of the ship is sepia toned. I don't know. Of all the newest class of ships, only the Cunard Queen Anne does anything for me. And a lot of Cunarders don't like it. I don't like the Edge ships from Celebrity. I just think the premium lines are trying to entertain rather than providing varied venues for passengers to interact. And when they're not doing that, then they want passengers in specialty dining rooms. Except HAL. They've kept their ships in the HAL style and I really hope they don't try to redefine themselves like Princess and Celebrity has.
Why is no one talking about how high it is to hang your clothes in the closet. If your under 5 "7" it's impossible. Also halls and entrance to cabin are not wide enough to negotiate even the smallest walker.
I was concerned about it when I saw that, but I’m 5 foot zero and I had no issues with the top shelf as long as I was wearing shoes. I do prefer the old walk-in closet though.
