    *Number one: Ashes will be a long-term success because Steven and John are in control.*
    *I think the tiny $15 to-try Ashes will equal a Tidal wave of players, new game FOMO will be powerful motivation.*
    *Also, word-of-mouth will cause Ashes numbers to go UP after launch, as retired gamers return to the battlefield.*

      I think the community knows mmos are a huge risk and people aren't going to want to piss away $15 trying an unknown element out. Lots of games from unknown developers try this model and I can think of at least 5 without even trying, that failed. I have been trying to think of one that succeeded and so far, can not.

    Longevity is based on the reset mechanic regarding node stages. This drives a sense of achievement and objectives that is constantly changing due to player interactions. This creates a pvp end game that doesn’t require new content patches to remain exciting and relevant for years.
    Biggest risk is player base dropping and empty/merging servers. Ashes cant do “layers” of players like a lot of other mmos. Server merges will completely destroy the node progress (which is where its longevity comes from) causing players to feel like their effort is worthless or up to the whim of their server population staying or quitting.
    This also heavily ties into launch problems. If they launch with too many servers, in order to capture all the interested people, then a couple months later when the population drops to 10% we will see massive server merges etc, causing the downward spiral.
    This player base drop will happen regardless of how good the game is. Ashes launch will attract a lot of people, and many of those people, even if they like the game, will have girlfriends/boyfriends and lives, and jobs, and hobbies that interfere with MMO gaming playtime.

    • @TheCopiumClinic
      @TheCopiumClinic  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I think if there's one round of merges within the first 6 months, there's going to be several more shortly after. Merges will be so punishing in Ashes.

      @barrywhite1770 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheCopiumClinic I was thinking about it today and maybe the problem isn't as bad. I recall a forum thread where people were talking about portals from one world to another as an in-game method for server transfer. Perhaps this idea could be expanded on by linking servers with portals to help aid with player fluctuations. A multiverse of Verras, interconnected at the devs discretion to even out the player base and economies when some servers are getting too big and others too small.

    • @tonydalimata
      @tonydalimata 9 месяцев назад +1

      Something Steven alluded to in the last live stream got me thinking about server merges.
      He talked about the corrupted areas and how players need to constantly be fight back against corruption or it will grow.
      If there isn't enough players on the server to keep the corruption beat back , will it grow and force players into areas where the only exit eventually is a portal that take the player to another server ?

    • @barrywhite1770
      @barrywhite1770 9 месяцев назад +1

    As an avid EVE player and former NW guild leader, I am trying not to get my hopes up but I am slowly becoming very excited for this game's future. I am enjoying your content. Within my small group of mmo friends, and with the way I fly in EVE, I look forward to possibly being a marauder type guild with zero allegiance to anyone within the political sphere on an Ashes server. I love the tranquility server aspect of EVE. The potential David vs Goliath end game loop.. being a pirate.. viking.. antagonist... that is the arch type I look forward to playing. Show up purely to pvp, paid to or not, and win. Nomadic in nature with no way to evict. Vouch only small scale. 15-30 tops, max form. High quality teamwork with great synergies on comms, theory crafting how to fight against zerg with only a few good players.. a place where skill can be on full display. Would love to have that open world NW pvp experience again in Ashes with cherry picked proven mechanics that EVE does right. Organic, meaningful PVP that has widespread effects over the server. I want to blockade your trade route and steal from the empire, become a thorn. Antagonize to create violence, chaos and drama, simply to murder and spill blood. Become villainized and gain a reputation where people WANT to pvp you. Test their might. Fear your presence in a battle. Try to buy your guilds temporary loyalty. Become a nemesis. Turn the tides of a fight, be a noble savage with no skin in the game other than the performance of the fight. All of these play styles can be realized in eve. Magic takes place on the EVE server, stories that the players create with the tools given. If Ashes continue to embrace hardcore pvp, embrace that world that I would love to game within, a unforgiving place where skill is rewarded.. then there is such a massive potential for fun to be had. I hope Ashes can be pulled off.
    TLDR: Let me roam around with my buddies and frag out.

      Well if you seen the new Ranger update that should be much less of a worry. But I'm with you, I've been a nuisance over on the forums about this same topic. The entire game can be real great, but if the combat sucks the whole game will flop, hard. That's because a game like this entirely revolves around 2 things, combat and community.
      All the professions, the dungeons, the potions, the skills, the talent trees, the seasons, the animals, the boats, everything revolves around combat. And the Gods honest truth is, if they can't hit WoWs level(the best combat in any MMO) of fun, of smoothness and polish, I think unfortunately it's going to rub people the wrong way.
      That's why I said on the forums man they can do whatever the hell they want with the game, make it unique, but they weren't looking like they were gonna nail the combat at all and they needed to be honest with themselves, if they can't do it then they need to just hard copy WoW straight up. Like Asmongold has said and any veteran player knows, it's entirely the reason why WoW is as popular as it is, the combat is the best in town, it's insanely smooth and polished, and pretty well thought out.

      So far my main complaint is lack of variety in play styles. It won't matter for a while, but they need to make it extendable like GW2. Balance will be an issue as you add more stuff, so having a method to prevent power creep would be nice.

    SticQeno hit it right on the head for me with regard to the completion mindset. I'm a collector in games. I hoard everything that isn't junk, and even then I still hoard a lot of junk. I find myself playing games to complete goals and when they don't have a goal to be reached, I end up losing interest. That isn't to say that there are definitely games with lots of replayability that don't necessarily have a major 'goal' in mind but I feel overall in terms of MMO playerbase, people want something to do, a way to reach that goal, then another one to do next week. Rinse and repeat.
    I am excited to see how the PvE systems come into play with the fully open PvP aspect, and if people can resist being gank-happy blood mongrels for long enough to work together to do world-scale content, raids, and even potentially PUGs for dungeons.

    What ashes needs to hold players longterm in my opinion is a completion System like in gw2. Something to complete and get rewarded for, with either medals, skins, items, nameplates, tags or titels. Something to show others your achievements. It will also give intrepid the incentive to provide and the ability to promote activities/challanges in the game

    • @PherPhur
      @PherPhur 9 месяцев назад

      I've never been a completionist or an achievement getter, but I see absolutely no reason these things shouldn't be in the game. 0 downside, 100% upside, no brainer. Minus the skin part. I don't like skins, I like seeing what other people are wearing in an MMO, but it's a small gripe. It's p2w with visual progression, but its not true p2w, it's the line before actual p2w.
      If that monetization keeps the greed in their hearts at bay so they don't feel the need to unleash the true p2w microtransaction plague upon it's community, then so be it.

    If AoC has 99.9% of everything Stephen has said it was(excluding things that's already been changed of course), and it's polished, smooth, bug free.... It's going to BLOW players fucking minds, excuse my French.
    I've seen Stephen talk enough about the game and have a good enough grasp on it all, i've seen his passion well enough to know there's 0% chance any of the upcoming MMOs are going to take from it long term(there's no way another team exists on earth right now with this level of insight into the genre and passion) and while no, it's not going to straight up kill all other MMOs because it is kind of unique and niche, fun is fun. Just about every MMO player has some fundamental similarities in their preferences of games, the same thing that is not only the foundation to fun games in general, but to great MMOs, something Intrepid seems to know very well.

    If they want to succeed, give people a 1 month free trial with a level cap and then sell them the game. None of this "free to play, give us your paycheck to enjoy" bullshit. Cash shop should be optional. Blast on blizzard all you want but they did D4 right in that you have plenty of in game customization options without having to go to the cash shop. And that's important. Guild wars 2 is another shining example of a pay to play game with an optional cash shop (that's admittedly too predatory with it's "convenience" options) that gives you more to earn in game than in the shop for most things.

    "JUST PUT SOMETHING OUT BRO" Ashes will make it if they can launch the game with a comparable amount of content to games like FF14 and WoW. They won't make it if they can't compete because at the end of the day, it will be compared to every other MMO out there despite not having years of content and time to patch and make balance updates.
    Patience is the secret. People want to play the game and constantly feel like there's something to do.

    You have don't have many options when it comes to the que. The que is there so you don't get left with a bunch of dead servers after launcher. 2 remedies are layering like in WoW which is essentially a hoppable server within a server, that auto-balances when people log on/off, but is joined within the chat channels. The other remedy is what I believe Intrepid will be taking which is merging dead servers with other servers. Considering the type of game AoC is with the node system... man both those options kind of suck, kind of really suck, almost not viable whatsoever.
    So IDK man, ques sound like the best option for AoC

Many others released over the years. Every new MMO heralded as the "X killer" (insert whichever dominating MMO I wish). They all tanked.
      The point is to manage your expectations. As a community we need to help them focus on straying from what made others fail. But I'd not be buying stock in any new MMO right now.

      if you don't think people are playing WoW, BDO, ESO and many others just because they don't have something better to play you're delusional. I didn't say it would KILL any game, nor did I imply it would take most of any game's player base. I said it would take some from everywhere, but that MOST would come from people who aren't even PLAYING an MMO cause they've given up on the P2W BS. You think AoC is going to tank? that's great, good for you, don't buy it, don't play it, GL 2 U. I however think it will succeed, my opinion and expectations have been developed over MANY years, and I didn't arrive here lightly. I didn't invest in Ultima Online when it was selling land in Pre-Release (and I almost did), I spent a little too much on BDO before I gave up. It is with A LOT of experience and knowledge that I say AoC will succeed where many others have failed... and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is. 250 for A2, Done, 250 for kids hospital, Done, if they want another 250 I'm down. Why would a player join months later and stick around with such slight odds of progression?
    How about the Elites whose server gets merged? Not too many people are going to like losing their Towns, Castles, or FreeHolds.
    MMO's require the Masses, it's literally in the name. I'm a bit concerned most people chasing the carrot are going to be beaten with the stick.
