- Step-by-step video for replacing motor oil and filter on the 5-liter V8 petrol engine of a 2010-2013 Land Rover LR4, using the vacuum method above the engine... After this, I'll never crawl under a car to perform an oil change again. This also applies to 2010-13 Range Rover Sport and Range Rover, which have the same engine. Procedure is the same for MY2014+ LR4, RRS and Range Rover with the Supercharged V6, although oil specs have changed slightly for that engine.
only thing i would add to this is to pre-lubricate the tube within the land rover/range rover before placing the black tube connector over it.. when trying to disconnect the tube, the black connector stays on the fill tube and is difficult to get off without pliers at that point.
Just did this on a 2016 LR4..I felt guilty it was so easy! Same 8 qt capacity. The only thing I would add is that I had to incrementally pump beyond the first 12 pumps to get all the oil out. Thanks again for the post!!
I use this method exactly and I always watch this video when I change my oil. Thanks Umberto
Great video - learned a lot, Thank you for being thorough and detailed for each step of the procedure. Many thanks!!
Excellent instructions. Thank you. I have a 2013 LR4 also.
Like they say, If you want something done right... DO IT YOURSELF! And your video helped me do exactly that today. I got all the things you used to do it, including the pump, and followed your video, pausing it here and there, and done. Thanks for your video. It saved me from going to one of those "quick oil change" places, and in the long run it will save me $$$ from getting the oil changed at the dealer. And it was SO EASY! Again... THANKS!
Daniyel, in the video I used a 15-flute, 90mm oil filter wrench, which works but has a tiny bit of play as you can see. I have since purchased a 15-flute, 89mm wrench (on Amazon, about $9) which fits perfectly over the filter cartridge with no play at all. So, get the 89mm size if you can.
Your video was really helpfully especially when my oil evacuator came with out manual. I used Mobil 1 5W-20 Extended Performance Full Synthetic Motor Oil for 15,000 miles between oil changes. I plan to change it in 6 month or 7500 miles. Using evacuator I found that my engine (LR4 HSE 2011) burned 1qt of oil in 6 month. Thank you for your time and video.
The first time I saw the vacuum method, it looked cumbersome, and I don't know why. You however, made it look very easy. Thanks for the great video! 👊😎
Second time watching it and second oil change all done by myself! Mahalo again for the great instructions. I’m doing mine every 5K here in PHX from now on.
Great video, thanks for doing it. I just ordered that exact vacuum pump off of Amazon. Should be here by the end of the week and I'll be doing my first oil change on my 13' LR4.
Hey Umberto. Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to produce it. Especial like how you included all that you were using to include part numbers!!
I purchased an IIDTool diagnostic module from Gap Diagnostic. Among its many useful diagnostic features (ability to read and clear faults, manipulate EAS height, enable certain factory disabled features, etc.) it also allows you to reset the Service Interval Indicator of the LR4.
Can you give me the link for that module please?? THANKS!
Found it. THANKS!
I just did this on my LR4 and I picked up a 90mm oil filter wrench from NAPA. I got home, started to drain the oil and I took the wrench out of the packaging and the damn thing was plastic. It did nothing but slip and would not turn the oil filter cap. I ended up having to use a traditional steel band oil filter wrench to get if off. I was unable to torque it. I marked the position of the oil cap against the metal part of the filter housing and i just torqued it as close as I could with the plastic filter wrench and it was pretty close to the mark I made before it slipped. I will definitly be getting the 89mm wrench and make sure it is metal next time! Thanks for the video, it helped a lot. Also, I used Mobil 1 Extended Performance since it meets the same specifications as the expensive castrol. I got it for 26 bucks per 5 quart jug at walmart
Awesome video. Saved me soo much $$ in the long run. Thanks!
Did mine yesterday - worked great. Thanks for the video. Note the exact same filter with a Jaguar part number cost less (at least it does at JLR dealers in Canada)
Ma man! Thank You for the post just did it for the first time last night and went without a hitch! I didn't use a pressurized socket wrench, I noticed you could feel the gap in the filter and feel your way to the appropriate closing once ur done tightening.
Great video Umberto. I recently bought a 2011 LR4 and was thinking about changing the oil myself but I took it to a LR mechanic to have the car checked out for any other potential problems. They found a few but I will definitely be changing the oil myself next time since it was 100 bucks. I'll invest in the pump and probably IIDTool as well to spot potential problems in the future. I plan on having this truck the rest of my life!
Great video - thank you very much! It has given me the confidence I need to do my own oil change on my 2011 LR4.
The ACDelco PF659 Professional Engine Oil Filter is available now on amazon and has been verified to be identical to the Mahle filter for a lower cost($17).
One more tip, you may have to do additional pumping to get the full 8 quarts out. Once the pumps stops siphoning just keep pumping a little more to try to get as much out as possible.
nice video a tip: if you dont have the special cap for oil filter a strap wrench works well also
Brilliant, thanks will be doing this when my service plan finishes. Mine is Diesel.
Nice job! you made it look easy, I will probably make a mess LOL!
great video thanks.. way better than $145 labor per hour at land rover dealer! now just need to buy mighty vac!
I recently call them for an oil change and they quoted me $320 plus tax here in San Jose, CA. How ridiculous
Nice work - planning to do mine as well. Only issue is the service indicator that only the dealer can re-set...
Thanks for a great video
thanks for ur video
it is really helpful
just got a lr4 and did't know much about about it thanks again
josue pena I hate to sound like an ass, but who does not do any research before buying a vehicle?
72Disco1998 i don't usualy do research what im buying
If i like something i just buy it
Thank God i can pretty much buy whatever i want
And i dont want to sound like an asshole but i got 7 nice rides on my garage
josue pena Ok
Torque wrench should only be used for final tightening when fasteners is being torqued. Not used to loosen anything.
Nice video.Straight forward.
Ah! Very nice. I was not aware anything like it was available until now. Quite a costly tool however it should pay for itself with time.
I didn't notice at first who was posting, recognise the name from RR.net now.
A million thanks, very helpful
Excellent video, thanks!
Thanks for you Education plus affordable economic way to change the Oil plus Filter at ours LR4 Thanks
Thanks Umberto copied everything and it worked great! Can you share how to reset the service required?
Anyone that comes across this video now, only use an oil that is STJLR.03.5004 approved. Mobil 1 does not meet the specs needed for the 5.0 engines. These engines really require the correct oil, took me a while to find a good oil that was approved.
Matt Reeves which oil?
Scotty T. Look for oils that meet STJLR.03.5004. Pennzoil Ultra platinum, Liqui Moly Special Tec F Eco, Motul Specific, Castrol progressional and Ravenol has one. You just need to make sure it’s correct approval these days.
were to find adaptor on oil to extract oil
The Jag 5.0L V8 need special engine oil. You can only use the oil from dealer, or redline, which cost more $$.
The only oil that comes with Land Rover's blessing is indeed Castrol Edge Professional OE 5W-20 (formerly known as Castrol SLX), a full synthetic oil spec'd specifically for this Jaguar / Land Rover engine. However, Land Rover also recommends replacement every 12 months or 15K miles, and I don't feel comfortable with such long intervals. So, I have chosen to replace oil and filter twice as often as recommended by the manufacturer, but using Mobil 1instead (Mobil 1 Extended Performance would be an even better choice, especially for longer service intervals.) From a warranty perspective, the ONLY oil you should use with these engines is Castrol EDGE Professional OE 5W-20, every 12 months or 15000 miles, whichever occurs first.
Thanks for posting this video - it was informative. I am getting a 2011 Range Rover Sport with the 5.0 normally aspirated engine. Question: Does the oil life meter automatically reset, or does it go by mileage? My past (not land rover) vehicles have needed to have the oil life monitor reset after the oil change. Thanks in advance for your time.
I just order the same unit to do it myself for the first time (I had mine done many years at the Mercedes dealer and they used the same method). Oil filter made in China for cheap labor and quality. My Mann oil filter for my Mercedes is made in Germany.BTY, mine vehicle has dip stick.
Very informative video.
Nice video and explanations, thank you. Much better than removing the under panel shield. What kind of evacuator pump is that? Will it work on all Land Rover Jaguar as well?
where did you get the black land rover front grille emblem I cant seem to find the right size. thanks
Perfect well done ,, plz how to reset service warning light ? Witting for reply plz
Nice little video! Im going with Liqui Moly oil... run it in all my BMWs! Curious... what tires are you running?
Thank you very much for the detail procedures on changing oil using MY2014+. I got inspired and bought the MV7201+ extractor and oil filter from Amazon to change my engine oil. To my disappointment, my 2012 LR4 HSE 3l Diesel doesn't have the topside extraction tube :(
Is it still possible to use the extractor to drain the oil?
I'm doing this job on my 2013 Land Rover LR4 3.0 SDV6 followed the instructions above. But I got 4 litres out and It's not just pulling air out of the sump. But the SDV6 capacity is 5.7 litres! :-( Anyone got an idea what's gone wrong please? The car is level and oil filter loose. I can't understand where the rest of the oil can be hiding...
bummed that the mitzvah black connector off Amazon does not seal on my '16
mityvac
Umberto, what oil filter adapter did you use? I have a 2013 Range Rover Sport I wanna do an oil change on.
Thanks for the video. I’d like to get your opinion on something. My 06 sport supercharged calls for a 5w 30 oil. Can I do 0w 40 instead? Will it hurt anything? It’s got 190k mikes. Thanks again for your time and patience.
Umberto, thanks for the video. I plan to do the same with my 2011 LR4. Did you extract the oil cold or did you let the engine warm it a bit before extracting?
+Russell Molina Oil should be warm, it is easier and faster to vacuum that way. If the engine is cold, let it idle for about 10 minutes, then turn it off and let it rest for another 10-15 minutes, to allow the oil to drip back down into the sump before extracting it.
Thank you Umberto. Do you have to reset the oil service light when you are done?
Looking at purchasing a 2011 LR4 Metropolis Edition, but want to do all my research, including doing what I am used to in my Avalanche: changing the oil. Thank you for this. Question: your watch; it looks awesome. What is it?
+Heidi Malone LOL, thanks. It's a Breitling Transocean Unitime Pilot.
Great video thanks 👍
thinking of buying a used 2013 with 43k on the clock... cost about 43 (but sticker prices blah) seems like service can be done myself... just problems with reliability scares me haha
good video
Does LR4 have drainage plug under the car? or is it just done through the top like you did? I am wondering because I don't have the pump and wondering if I have to buy one of those.
Yes, the 5-liter V8 (and the new SC V6 as well) still have a plug on the oil pan, so you can still drain it from the bottom if you prefer, just not as convenient as the vacuum method described in the video.
Great video Umberto. Is it necessary to clean the mityvac after and if so, how do you do it?
+marxtr6 , thanks! No cleaning for me, right after vacuuming the oil out (while it is still warm), I simply reverse / flip the valve on the Mityvac and pump the oil back out of it through the same suction tube, into a 12-quart plastic oil recycling jug, which I take down a local collection/recycling center when full. The oil comes out of the Mityvac pretty much to the last drop, so I don't find it necessary to clean anything, other than wiping the tip of the extraction tube when finished and storing the whole thing away in the garage until the next time I need it.
You don't HAVE to... But if the Service Reminder light bothers you, I guess you can either get the indicator reset at a dealer or indy shop with compatible diagnostics, or get your own diagnostic module (such as the IIDTool I mentioned below) and reset it yourself. Those diagnostic tools pay for themselves real quick if you plan on keeping your LR4 for a long time.
aloha umberto. can you put up a parts list for the vacuum, filter wrench and oil filter? I'd like to start doing this myself on my 12'LR4
Mark Quitan its not that difficult.
I change mine 8-10k miles. You can go to autozone they can order that slx0w20 for you $10 a quart.
Thanks, helpful video
we can use it for range Rover Sport 2009?
No. Only 2010s and later (with the 5-liter V8 engine) included provisions for vacuuming the motor oil from the top, as shown in the video. With the older 4.4 liter V8 of 2006-2009 RRS and LR3, you will have to continue draining the oil from the sump.
Mightyvac typically calls for extraction via the dipstick. Does the LR4 not have a dipstick?
Nope, no dipstick. As shown in the video, an electronic gauge in the instrument cluster tells you if the oil level is low (hopefully...)
That's interesting. I would hope the oil level sensor has few issues lol
Hi , thanks for the video , what about lr3 ? Is it the same process? And from where i can have service manuals? Thank you
+خالد الرواس The LR3 doesn't have provisions for vacuuming the oil from the top of the engine, and also uses a completely different oil filter, so you won't be able to easily suction the oil out as shown in the video, and should use the more traditional method of draining it from the plug on the bottom of the sump.
+Umberto Bonfante Fast answer👍👍 thanks
Did you say Mahle? Because I thought Mahle filters are made in Austria.
The LR4 compatible ones I buy on Amazon (Mahle Original OX 774D) are made in China... Maybe the cardboard box is made in Austria, LOL.
Question: Are you in USA? How'd you get the digital speedometer up? I have a 2012 RRS and cannot get that option to show up.
You can enable the digital MPH speedo with IIDTool from Gap Diagnostic (the tool I also use to reset the Service Interval Indicator.)
Ah yes... I've tried to purchase this, but I couldn't get a clear answer if it would work on 2012. I've been to their site and it wasn't clear when I went there. Initially, I was looking to just adjust ride height. But I see... so I have to spend money on an extra part. Thank you.
+gatdammit You will also be able to enable features such as global windows close with the remote (only global windows open is enabled in the US) and even program additional keys to your car - new ones or even used ones you can purchase cheap on eBay (this works on all 2010s and later.) IIDTool is one of the best purchases I've ever made for my LR4, can't say enough good things about the product and company behind it. You won't regret it, especially if you plan on keeping your LR4 for a few more years.
Where can I purchase it? It seems that they partner up with someone and I can't purchase directly. It would be REALLY great if it could also hack the DVD player to run while moving. ha. Thanks, the help is appreciated and great video. Oh one more question you have the part number or equivalent aftermarket oil filter part? Thanks, again. I'm on rangerovers.net and I see you active there all the time as well. ;) Nevermind.. .i found it. they changed their site.
+gatdammit They just revamped their web site and partnered with a new distributor. You should be able to purchase the tool directly from their site now: www.gap-diagnostic.com/
I find the oil filter on Amazon, look for Mahle OX 774D. Same exact filter as OEM, a little cheaper (I have it delivered every 6 months with Subscribe and Save.)
Do you know if the oil capacity is the same for 2016 V6 engine?
Geoff Maxwell Hi Geoff, yes capacity is exactly the same, although I believe the specs for the oil grade are slightly different for the SCV6 engine, compared to the NAV8 shown in the video. Check your Owner Manual to make sure.
Thanks for the reply and for making the very helpful video!!
Good Video BUT i'll stick to draining the oil from the oil pan
Suit yourself, plenty of owners still prefer the drain plug method, and these engines give you both choices to change the oil. Having tried both procedures myself, I honestly don't see the point of sliding under the car to undo sump covers and drain plug anymore (especially since I installed an aftermarket Asfir aluminum sump guard on my LR4, which is heavy and kind of a pain to unbolt and reinstall. It's a matter of preference, that's all.
Umberto Bonfante Who cares mate everyone has an opinion, i have mine
Wer guive tis tools?
no dip stick? Someone kill me
Thank God I own a 2008 Range Rover, I don't have to go through this process...
BORICUA CHANNEL I own a 2012 Range Rover Sport and it has the top vacuum method and also has a drain plug. You can chose your preferred method.
This is what i call a mickey mouse oil change you would never drain all the dirty fluid all the way.
TAMIM AMINI This is the "Mickey Mouse" oil change that Land Rover details, step-by-step, in its workshop manual and that its dealers routinely perform on this engine. My guess is that you don't own a LR4, so you don't really know what you are talking about.
mickey mouse? This is how you properly change the oil on this vehicle.
Great video BTW. Do you have a link for the wrench? 89mm Can't seem to find one.
Timmy drives a Camry.
good video
