  • What? No Hands!
I have to tell you some news about my two hands.
For over 20 years, I have had a contraction on a finger of each hand that prevents the fingers from straightening, and so far, it has not restricted my work, but one day, it will if I don't take some action now. I have decided it is time to have some work done by a surgeon specialising in this disease who believes she can help me, so this video explains what I am proposing.
I will keep you posted on my progress.

I have that, went through the surgery. They straightened out my fingers, permanently. Now, I've lost dexterity in my left hand, with all the scar tissue, etc. I used to play simple guitar stuff, and was a model builder for many years. Can hardly do that again. Good luck.

‘Celtic claw’ - a down side of northern English heritage. And one of Mother Nature’s less welcome experiments in ‘improving’ our design. I have had 4 operations. Two fingers on each hand curled right over so can not use gloves or cup water to wash face. Latest op a palmar fasciectomy. For what it’s worth my surgeon does not think much of the needle treatment and thinks it gives short term benefit only. I wish you well and will be keen to see - glad to see - a good result. Best wishes

Thanks for update. I’m 80 and have a similar condition affecting several fingers on both hands. I’ll be very interested to hear about your surgery results and whether the fix is permanent or temporary. It sounds less invasive than what was proposed to me in California.

    Hi Paul,
I had the same problem on the middle finger of my left hand some years ago. Had the op. and now the hand is as good as new. The biggest ‘pain’ was the wait until I could get back to woodworking. Stay positive and good luck with the procedure…. You’ll be back at your bench before you know it!
    Best wishes,
    Chris

Thanks for this explanation. I’m a retired GP and this video would have been very useful to pass on to the many patients who develop this condition. You give great examples of what it is, what you do to adapt and what the treatment eventually involves. Just shows that you have transferable skills with teaching by careful explanation!!
Looking forward to more from you in future.

Good luck on your surgery and all the best for a quick and full recovery.

Paul, I have the same condition. Middle fingers both hands. Not as severe as your affliction. Didn’t know it had a name or treatment. Blamed it on many years of flying, truck driving, farming and working with my hands. Like you, I can’t pick up or hold small objects. Coins fall through my fingers. Had to give up sailing. Couldn’t handle the lines even wearing gloves. I must wear soft leather gloves to comfortably drive, do woodworking mow the lawn or anything using my hands. I am 81 years old so I don’t think I’ll seek treatment unless the condition worsens. I will be watching you for the results of your surgery. Good luck and God Bless.
