  • Just throwing out my best effort at a redesign for the glorious Break Action Shotgun in Helldivers 2 and attempting to provide a way to turn it into a real support weapon. I'd love to bring this thing around with me on purpose in games, just for fun. Just to have 4 people bring it and do shenanigans in a game. Plus Helldivers 2 could use a little complexity. I think idea 2 is better than idea 1 but I don't know the logistics of either from a development cost perspective.

    I'd love for them to reclassify this as a primary and make it a meme unlock in a future warbond, similarly to the bolt action rifle in the first game.

    I like this idea a lot. I really just want this to be a special support weapon that you unlock by physically carrying it back from a mission. Gimme this, the Senator, and some lever action primary or something and I’ll be the rootinist-tootinist Helldiver.

    No need to remove the existing options, just add it to one of the other 3 slots that are avaliable on the menu

      And that lets you have up-scroll be the upper shell, and down-scroll be the lower one, with just makes sense.

      Yes thats it we figured out the perfect double barrel shotgun
      Upscroll upper Barrel
      downscroll lower Barrel
      Right scroll fire Mode
      Ammo Buck-,Bird-,Slugshot, Incendiary (the already existing ones)
      And like other people suggested you can’t buy it you have to bring it back from a mission to unlock it
      Regarding the Ammo a stun charge or „apfsds slug“ (flechette makes even less sense) small enough to fit in a shotgun shell would hardly be strong enough to stun anything (compared to a stun grenade) or penetrate/damage anything (compared to a rocket propelled dominator projectile for example) so hardly any benefit here
      Stunning would be better for the grenade launcher and an armor piercing round with high penetration and no explosive damage could be used in future versions of the dominator/eruptor or a new kind of amr

    leaving aside the issue of if arrowhead is willing/able to add the code supporting multiple ammo types with different behaviors, I think that it might make more sense to use the scroll wheel controls for both barrels, with the scroll up changing the top barrel and scroll down changing the bottom barrel, and that way the single shot/burst fire can stay and keep using the right click controls
    if arrowhead aren't going to add support for multiple ammo types on a single gun, my idea on how to at least make it less of a joke "haha, a double barrel, I'm doomguy now" pick-up, would be to give it medium penetration flechettes instead of its current buckshot, so there would be an actual reason to carry it around if, for example, your support weapon was still on cooldown
    I also think it'd be cool if we could unlock something like a joke booster that lets you drop with the break action and like 10 rounds of ammo by successfully extracting some number of times while carrying the break action

    The thing about the BAS it that is has a very tight spread and packs a huge punch while also have burst fire, it's not a bad weapons tbh

    The break-action is surprisingly handy. Its damage, spread, knockback, and reload speed are surprisingly all in the goldilocks zone.

    This Shotgun has 40 shots so it should be. 1 find it on a mission. 2 kill 40 enemies to unlock. Otherwise it would be too easy.

    4:30 - you could use the top and bottom menus to select each barrel's ammunition, corresponding to the top and bottom barrels. Then you'd only need to use the scroll wheel to control both ammo types.

    It doesn't have burst fire anymore, it now has both barrels fired at the same time

    I like the idea of where this is going.
    But think it could be promoted in three different ways.
    1.
    Make it so you select ammo for both barrels, barrel 1 and barrel 2, and double barrel or single barrel firing options. Radial menu up, down and right.
    My issue with this is, ammo quantity and value. When one type of ammo is more dominant than another and if loading "status" effect rounds deplete more ammo per shot than another etc.
    2. Make it into a supplimentary support weapon on drop via unlock by extracting with it once. Extracting with the shotgun, gives you the chance to equip it before a dive like a 3rd weapon (however it stays in the current form it's in) that's meant to be replaced with a full support weapon
    3.
    Extracting with the shotgun on a helldive difficulty unlocks a new hellpod modifier, named something along the lines of "trench warfare", "super shotgun" or "doom guys" and it gives all divers the shotgun out of the hellpod.
    Would like to see the shotgun get more love than it does now

    I would just have sideways T shaped menu. Scroll up for the top barrel, scroll down for the bottom barrel. Simple, intuitive, cool.

    An incendiary option would also be fun! Could be made to mimic dragons breath bullets from real life, where it doesn't do as much straight damage as the incendiary breaker, but it does much more fire damage over time

    Funnily enough, this IS my Tertiary weapon most times. I usually run 3 Destructive Stratagems and a Drone. So, finding this, or any other support weapon, is usually how I roll. I call it OSP, which I learned from MGS back in the day. On-Site Procurement. It also, in theory, makes my Divers less expensive to send out.

    Break Action Shotgun (Support weapon) new stats:
    Medium Penetration (3)
    Damage 45 (Total 360 if all pellets hit same part)
    Pellets: 8
    Durability Damage: 15 (Total 120 if all pellets hit same part)
    Large downsides are 2 rounds before needing to reload, and the rapid damage falloff (beyond 10m)
    Would make for a great up close annihilator weapon when found.

    Actually this looks pretty great i really like your idea for it. Id also like all weapons to get custom parts at some point. The current menu allows you to change zoom level, which i would keep and fire rate/mode which i would also keep. It also allows you to toggle flashlights on or off but it would be really cool if that could be an underbarrel or attachment menu, and then a 4th list for muzzle types or ammo type depending on the weapon

    Absolutely love this idea! As you said, there's little reason to engage with the weapon menus (although, I do find swapping between burst and automatic fire on the Tenderizer to be occasionally useful), and something like this would make weapons much more interesting. Like if they had only one punisher that could swap between buckshot and slugs (make more use of those dual magazines), or if the breaker could swap between it's three different ammo types as opposed to having variants of the same gun.
    Obviously, they're not going to get rid of those weapon variants, but more reason to engage with the menu is something I've wanted for a while.

    00/00 would shoot again. This is a pretty great idea all jokes aside i would love to use his shotgun more and the ammo types are pretty great for it as well. I want to propose a lil addon to this idea. Having the shells you bring with you swappable. What you proposed is great if they want to limit the ammo types to just a few, but shotguns have A LOT of ammo types i think being able to swap the 3 additional shell types would be quite nice *if* they decide to add more then just the 3 additonal types such as
    -Dragons Breath (incendiary),
    -Birdshot (more pellets, less dmg, better light enemy clearing),
    -FRAG-12 (Explosive, can take down small barriers such as fences and pierce more then buck would be strong against armored groups/devestators),
    -Sabot Slug (basically long range Heavy armor penning arrow wouldnt do a crazy amount of dmg to heavys though would be better at sniping medium armored targets like shooting a bile spewer some 100m out).

    I like to pick this gun up and use it time to time, its a nice gun, I dont know if it woulf be worth have it be a stratagem instead of just being a primary

    It's very likely incendiary grenade launcher is coming in the next warbond.
    With this, I would conclude they are unlikely to include changable ammunition type in the weapon system.
    cool idea though..

    I agree with this, I’ve been waiting for customization for a while. It would make half the guns usable again. I just want a drum mag on my AR’s or some type of higher capacity mags maybe 45-50 rounds

    individual menus for each chamber is the way to go, with third menu to control "default shell on reload" behavior. We have 4 menus, why not use them.
    Very nice shotgun idea, i'd love to run it.

    If this weapon was lying about on the ground as they do, I still wouldn't fancy the chances of it getting picked up over any other support weapon. It would be a great primary weapon though.
    That said, I don't like how weapon categories have been pigeonholed in their capabilities, but it is what it is.

    If the "Flechette" is meant to be capable of dealing with Hulk's in a meaningful time frame, then what's the point of the Slug or other ammo types? You effectively created a scopeless double barrel AMR. Also, for a Stun Round to have a meaningful impact, it'd have to last longer than 1/10th the time of a Stun Grenade, in which case you've recreated the Stun Grenade spam bug. Not to mention it might be a bit fiddly to design a gun to remember two separate ammo types at once as well as what order they were loaded.

      Slug should have superior damage to light and medium armor while flechette is superior for heavy armor. Yes its a scoreless AMR. A support weapon that can't mailslot a hulk or leg a charger isn't a support weapon worth taking.
      I see your point on stuns but its not going to be an AOE. Its a single target stun. I'm not too concerned about that.
      Code issues are code issues, its just a system. It can be done. How hard depends on existing architecture.

    My number one gun request is a break action single shot primary m79 style grenade launcher - under this system, it would be interesting to add stun/frag/gas grenades to something like that.

    I just finished a mission and the place where u buy stratagems has had a design change for me, it's like deeper into the wall, a separate room

      That's one of the latest upgrades they added. It's the 10% reload speed on all stratagem weapons upgrade.
      Each upgrade changes your ships look, like the cannons outside, the command center, the robotics sections and the eagle bay in the back.

    I'd make it an achievement unlock. You then buy it like a regular support weapon. It would have no call down, it'd be the ONLY support weapon you drop with already equipped and loaded.

    Alternatively, have a reload menu options on the up and down arrows that allow you to select which ammo you put in each individual barrel, and shells are swapped (if different) on the closing of the reload menu.

    regarding the special ammo type reloading mechanic... that's a little over complicated.
    you can get every function you wanted if you just reloaded both barrels at the same time with the ammo type you've selected

    why not give the reload screen 2 bars that way you could pick what rounds you want there instead of having to go through reload animations over and over? i think it would be nice to be able to select which barrel is dedicated to each shot.

    Make it a primary, give it ridiculously tight spread + higher velocity (on account of the long barrels) and give it lots of ammo.
    That being said what I want is a lot more tube fed guns (rounds reload function), I think we should get something like a Mare's Leg and a Super Shorty, an incendiary version of the pump shotgun, and an automatic tube fed shotgun.
    I slept on all the shotguns besides the Blitzer until I was in the 40s level wise. After trying the Pump shotgun I'm a massive rounds reload fan. Going into combat with a full magazine cannot be understated. Sure you can drop a mag that is less than full, but you don't get those rounds back, nor can you combine two half filled magazines to make one full one, you just drop it in the dirt like trash.
    I really want a Rounds Reload Secondary

      its a lower lvl mission you can find it at around lvl 1-3 i think and you need to fight automatons to find it as well

    I still think burstfire should stay I just think it should be buffed almost no games outside of Boomer shooters make firing both barrels as powerful as it should be.
    The new ammo types would combine with that well. You get the option to load different combinations of shells to fire at once
    Reminds me of drg's boltshark

      Thing is burst fire is just single fire but it shoots the second round when you let go. Its not any faster than tapping.

    just make it high risk reward weapon, if you barrel stuff a hulks mail slot or a charger butt you can one shot it, down side is you have to be in point blank range make it an anti heavy shotgun.

      I get the security concern but if it's a privacy concern I'm more worried about Microsoft themselves at this point. But most of my favored toys don't run on Linux. Feels bad.

      All the guns can kill the same suite of enemies up until the armor class is too high. Shoot the weakspot. The few exceptions to this are plasma weapons with medium armor pen that can handle striders but they barely bore mentioning for a simple point.

      It may be, I bet we see renewed interest when illuminids launch for a while then it dies off again. Still a bigger audience than the game i have been covering lately.

    Human thinking is slow. Weapons usage is fast. Any time you give players a fiddly tool like that, they metagame all its complexity down to 1-2 optimal tricks, and use only that. While crying on forums, like, 'having to repop a emp+fle from the menu after every shot is atrocious, who the fuck made this shit, refunded and uninstalled'.

      @@BenDunno Not 'don't want', physically can't. Different timescales. The only way of using a complex tool in combat is by pre-training yourself on a small set techniques.
      Also, i didn't say this feature shouldn't be added. Just managing expectations. Players optimize the fun out of everything.
