Plasma is beneficial to a wide variety of patients.
Children and adults with cancer, including leukemia, need plasma transfusions.
Other users are people undergoing liver transplants,
    bone marrow transplants, and
    severe burn patients.
Clotting factors for hemophilia patients are made from donated plasma.
What is blood plasma used for?
Plasma is commonly given to trauma, burn and shock patients, as well as people with severe liver disease or multiple clotting factor deficiencies.
It helps boost the patient's blood volume, which can prevent shock, and helps with blood clotting.
Plasma helps support your immune system and plays a critical role in clotting blood to prevent excessive bleeding. This is why plasma donations are so incredibly important - they help treat bleeding disorders, liver disease, and several types of cancer, among other conditions like: Immune deficiencies.
It helps with immunity, blood clotting, maintaining blood pressure, blood volume, and pH balance in the body. It also plays a key role in transporting blood cells, nutrients, proteins, waste products, and hormones throughout the body.
    Functions
As plasma forms the liquid base of blood, it serves many functions in the body. Some of these functions includeTrusted Source:
Coagulation: Many important proteins, such as fibrinogen, thrombin, and factor X, are present in plasma and play a vital role in the clotting process to stop a person from bleeding.
Immunity: Blood plasma contains disease-fighting proteins, such as antibodies and immunoglobulins, which play a crucial role in the immune system by fighting pathogens.
Blood pressure and volume maintenance: A protein present in plasma called albumin helps to maintain the oncotic pressure. This prevents fluid from leaking into areas of the body and skin where less fluid usually collects. This also helps ensure blood flow through blood vessels.
pH balance: Substances present in blood plasma act as buffers, allowing plasma to maintain a pH within normal ranges, which helps to support cell function.
Transportation: Plasma in the blood helps to transport nutrients, electrolytes, hormones, and other important substances throughout the body. It also helps to remove waste products by transporting them to the liver, lungs, kidneys, or skin.
Body temperature: Plasma helps maintain body temperature by balancing heat loss and heat gain in the body.
    How it’s done
There are two ways to donate plasma. The first is by donating whole blood. A laboratory then separates the blood components, including plasma, as needed.
The other way involves donating only plasma. This is performed through a method known as plasmapheresis. A machine draws blood from a vein into a centrifuge. A centrifuge is a machine that spins rapidly, which separates plasma from other blood components.
Plasma is naturally lighter than many other components, so it tends to rise to the top during this process. The machine will keep the plasma and send other components, such as red blood cells, back into your body.
Donated plasma keeps for about a year. It’s usually kept frozen until it’s needed.
    Plasma Components
Plasma contains about 90 percent water, with 10 percent being made up of ions, proteins, dissolved gases, nutrient molecules, and wastes.
The proteins in plasma include the antibody proteins, coagulation factors, and the proteins albumin and fibrinogen which maintain serum osmotic pressure.
Each of these can be separated using different techniques so that they form various blood products, which are used to treat different conditions. For instance, clotting factors are used to treat coagulation disorders like hemophilia or disseminated intravascular coagulation.
