He's obviously socially anxious and comes from a background that requires you to act tough, not be a sissy etc. - which only feeds into the social anxiety narrative. Social anxiety is basically intrusive thoughts forming while you try to think of what to say, so you have to put effort into ignoring those thoughts as well as picking the right thing to say - you can see the buffer time when it happens. Also - surely he has some CTE going on at this point, I really hope not but it seems silly to think there wouldn't be some level of brain damage (not necessarily that it will impact his life terribly, maybe just some memory loss)
