- This is a livestream featuring @Chris Bookish Cauldron where we will be discussing all of the Farseer Trilogy with spoilers. I believe Robin Hobb is one of, if not the best fantasy author and Farseer is the first trilogy in a larger series called Realm of the Elderlings. I am very excited to be able to talk spoilers (finally) for Farseer.

The fact that some of the people closest to Fitz don't know he's alive is what really gets me.
Fitz losing it and telling Burrich and Chade that they are failures and whatnot was the single most soul crushing moment in the whole trilogy
I was so mad and sad
My understanding was that Kertricken was aware of the body swap, that although she clearly had an attraction to Fitz, she did it for the good for the kingdom. I didn’t get the impression she was tricked
I dont think the did it for the good of the kingdom because she didnt know she would be pregnant. When she was told that she was like "what?? how are you certain?". She did it to help her king get the memories he needed to finish the dragon but when he told Fitz about "the feelings of being with a woman blah blah" i thought he would ask for fitzs memories with moly, which he then gave to the girl on the dragon anyway so, kertricken not knowing she would be pregnant, she was tricked into having sex with fitzs body to do something unnecessary
An under recognized character that has a major influence on the Farseer series is Queen Desire. You can trace so much of who Regal is back to his mother. The pride, paranoia, and even the drug use are all echoes of Desire.

I have to say I am proud that in the ending of Royal assassin I was very sure that Burrich did say those terrible things as an act and was in actuality trying to help Fitz but it felt still like a punch in the gut because Fitz didn't realize it
It was so hard to read some of that

BRO. Regarding Shrewd blocking Fitzs memories of his mom.
In the first scene when he's getting handed over from his maternal grandpa to Verity, he has no recollection of his mother, despite his memories being crystal clear on that day (allegedly from the Skill).
BUT, a couple of weeks later, in Buckkeep, he again has memories of his mother.
'Mother had been mother, and whatever I had known if her was already fading' - pg. 26
This supports the theory that Shrewd gave Fitz some skill amnesia. In chronological order
- Fitz gets given to Verity, with memories of his mother
- Fitz moves to buckkeep and his memories of his past life and mother start to fade
- Shrewd sees Fitz in the dining hall. He takes him on, simultaneously giving him Skill-amnesia to make him forget his maternal family and keep him loyal to the farseers.
- Now, whenever Fitz looks back to the first day, he can't remember anything before the age of 5. Then suddenly, he has crystal clear memories of being handed over to Verity, likely due to skill induced amnesia and recollection.
Don’t mind me watching this video series for the fourth time…🙃 I have watched so many Hobb streams, but I find that your videos especially manage to combine your personal feelings about the story and the characters with examples of plot in a way that creates a cohesive video that’s filled with substance and well thought out arguments. Plus, I really enjoy hearing you and your guests talk with each other, which is why this Hobb spoiler series is somewhat of a comfort series for me. I’m glad you did it, thank you!

I just finished the Trilogy, Wow! I absolutely loved how realistic Fitz was written. Magnificent characters, dire situations, grand scale, and most of all heartbreaking.

Finally finished the trilogy.
Loved Assassin's Apprentice, loved Royal Assassin even more and I was up and down on Assassin's Quest. I mostly liked it but it was too slow at times, the amount of travelling made me realise just how much I loved and missed the political intrigue of the previous two books, and I didn't care for the resolution, I would've loved to have seen what Hobb skimmed over. Whenever Fitz and the Fool were together I adored the Assassin's Quest.
But all in all, if you asked me, I would tell you I consider it one of my favourite trilogies. Ever.
I will read the rest of Realm of the Elderlings, after I'm caught up/finished Malazan and Dresden Files.
Hi Jimmy, I decided to read the elderling series because of your reviews. I just finished reading the Farseer Trilogy and I'm not okay. I was blown away! Robbin Hobb is a master at her craft. Words are hard...but I am sooo glad playback is here because I need it right now!!! Starting Mad Ship next month, because I am incandescently satisfied and invested.
This made my day, love when people read Hobb and enjoy it. Enjoy the rest, it keeps getting better and better!
I recently finished the full Elderlings series... she was just getting started with the Farseer trilogy, this series is the most incredible story I have ever read from start to the very last sentence.

this was such a good trilogy def looking forward to the rest of the series and these spoiler talks as I make my way through it! For me Assasin's quest was a perfect book, I went from liking the characters and story to LOVING it. It was so impactfull and took a lot out of it. Robin Hobb's books are truly diamonds among zircons;)

So on the same page with the lunch lady. The lunch lady at my school gave me the best insider information. Primarily that the only pot of caffinated coffee was brewed at 7 so I would fill a little thermos and be drinking the good stuff while everyone else was unwittingly drinking decaf

The Farseer trilogy is one that I respect but can't say I admire. The loss, wounds, betrayals, and dysfunction are masterfully done but too much for me. It takes considerable power of will to not just detach and compartmentalize it all. I can sympathize for Fitz, but like an astray family member, I have to offer affection from a distance, lest they entangle me with their mistakes and cruelties. Maybe if I had someone to read them with it would be different. I do love the side characters, especially Patience and Kettricken

About the body switch Kettricken stuff: I was very disgusted by it. I mean like technically it was Verity doing it and Fitz like didn't see or feel or had anything to do with it in his mind but his body and... yeah it's very uncomfortable. And I think she has no clue or maybe had a suspicion but wants rather to not think about it
It was the lowest point in the trilogy for me
Maybe I’m weird I thought that act was incredibly kind he gave them one last night together. Better then dying. To me Starling recalling her r))) was the lowest part of the trilogy
That felt like rape to me. It was disgusting, especially that Fitz didn’t know that that was Verity’s intention. He had to scrub his body and wash his clothes when he found out. The fact that Verity wasn’t even sorry gutted me!

Reading a book written in first person, you can't help but think: "at least I know the narrator won't die." ...then you read Royal Assassin 😳

@@thefantasynuttwork very slow going in the first book, was enjoying it but found myself dissuaded from finishing it! However, the "hook" didn't grab me until Kettricken poisoned Fitz, and I knew I had to finish the whole trilogy after what transpires from there!

Starling and Fitz do hook up in the end and in the epilogue it's said she comes every year or so and they do it most of the time when she comes or so I remember but they definetly do it once at the end

I fully believed Burrich killed Nosy on my first read. I think part of it was me being pretty young when I read it (aroudn 14) and part of it is just me getting sucked in by Fitz's point of view. He is a very unreliable narrator, but even on re-reads I find myself buying into his narrative, and on the first read I never questioned him.
I have kind of grown up along with Fitz and this series. I read the first trilogy in my early teens and identified so hard with Fitz. I had two epeleptic seisures during 8th grade and for a couple of years I did not know if this was something I would have to live with for the rest of my life (turned out not, thankfully), and it resonated so much with Fitz body failing him after the poisoning at the end of book 1.The rest of the series has resonated in similar ways with the different phases of my life during which they were published.
I don't cry often. And practically never because of something I have read. Malazan have made me tear up once or twice, but Robin Hobb has made me ugly cry two times. The first time was when I first read the end of Royal Assassin, and the second time was during the Tawny man trilogy. She is truly one of the greats. Why she is not as popular as GRRM or Robert Jordan, I will never understand.
While one of the things I like about Hobb is that she takes her time telling the story, I think that Assassins Apprentice is really fascinating in that it is a relatively short book which is packed with a lot of stuff. It still feels like it moves along at a relatively slow pace, but there is so much information on every page. I think it is a prime example of compact and effecient storytelling.

I have been reading Robin Hobb since 1999, and I have met like two other persons who have read Farseer and Liveship traders, but even though they loved it they never continued with the series.

I've just started the first book in Tawny Man and your comment scares me. George Martin is known in the internet as a sadistic author killing his characters every other page, but Robin Hobb is the true sadist, keeping her characters alive so they can experience true suffering.

I think Chris casually spoiled the Keppet/Fitz's mom reveal for you. You don't know that Fitz's true name is Keppet until Fool's Fate. It's at that point you're supposed to think back to his mother calling out to him in Assassin's Apprentice and him not recognizing her 😢

Iove the little details Hobb weaves through out the series and makes me a bit annoyed that other authors always feel the need to be so heavy-handed in giving us information. It also makes me appreciate the kingkiller chronicles more and how subtle Rothfuss is in his foreshadowing similar to Hobb.
I love this type of writing! It makes rereading so valuable. I'm definitely doing one of these for Liveships 😁

The third book has got to be one of the toughest books I’ve read in a long time. she had atleast 200 useless pages, the ending was good it just took me 2 months to read the book and definitely put me in a slump.

The scene with his mom was when he was in the market and on his way to meet Molly. And it was on the same day that he founds out from Verity and Regal on the way back that his father died. When it comes to recognizing his mother, I think it was a trauma that he suppressed. I don't think Shrewd took away his memories of his mother. I think he used the skill to touch minds so that Fitz knew what he was asking, know the gravity of the deal he was making. Fitz repressed it and when he was getting rid of his deepest hurts into girl on a dragon, when it came out, he knew what it was as it was happening and was letting it go on purpose. A boy of six getting abandoned by his family could only have been traumatic for him. And don't forget the small detail of Kettricken's story about a little girl being a spy for her father (or was it her brother?) to catch a thief quite early on, foreshadowing Rosemary's role, always sitting around in a corner, appearing to do her own thing. So much stuff that you can catch on rereads...

I don't know why I torture myself rereading the whole lot of the farseer (Fitz) books (9). I don't mean that they are bad. I love the fool. I also want to stab him for what he did.
Also Fitz, being so ignorant and childish. I do not think it an accident that, after every encounter with Kettricken that shows the slightest hint of her fondness for Fitz (or a stirring in him that he puts down solely to Verity's feeling for Kettricken), he then goes off and does something passionate with SOMEONE ELSE (Molly, Starling, Someone else (won't say because spoilers)).
I'd not say I'm lukewarm on mistborn it is a solid series but it is imo overrated or overhyped and gets too much praise so that it is somewhat disappointing not by virtue of being bad but just by being praised to heights it can't hold up to when going with the expectation that it's how good people say it is
I really liked book 1, book 2 not so much and it kinda ruined it for me

@@thefantasynuttwork I binged Way of Kings and Words of Radiance back to back and really enjoyed them, then went straight into Oathbringer and it was like hitting a brick wall and I DNF it.
Maybe I was just burned out of the series from binging it all at once, but I don't see myself picking Oathbringer back up for a very long time.
Mistborn was alright I guess. Had some epic moments not gonna lie, but ultimately didn't blow me away either.

Also, I ADORE Nighteyes. He does fall under the stereotype of a wolf companion that I'm starting to get tried of but Nighteyes won me over very quickly.
