Chuck often compared Spock to Superman in his reviews because both seemed to suffer the same minor problem under the writers: being such a fan and show favorite that they'd often glorify or overpower him at the expense of any logical story progression.
But that has in turn caused the characters to become so beloved and respected not just among pop culture, but in-universe as well. In Spock's case, it really goes to show how much the character has made such an impact among the Prime timeline, whether it's Vulcan becoming a much more prominent member of the Federation and Starfleet, the Khitomer Accords, and his ambassadorial work.
It really does make me wonder just how much Prime Spock would do in the Kelvin timeline, how much he did aside from the establishment of New Vulcan, before his passing in Beyond. If perhaps, in the end of his long and illustrious life, like he had mentioned to Data during Unification, he had no regrets.

Two of the lasting legacies I think Spock may have left us are that logic and emotion are compatible, and that intelligence is very cool. That the gold shirt of command was not the only one worth respect.

A lot of what is said about Spock's position as between 2 world's, can also be said about Worf. As a Klingon raised on Earth by Humans, and joined Starfleet, he faced a lot of similar challenges as Spock.

Two things come to mind about Nimoy seeing this video. When Spock told Kirk in "Voyage Home" saving Chekov was the HUMAN thing to do. (But logical too, as not to further disrupt the timeline and let Chekov-an important Starfleet officer-die)
Plus when Leonard closed an episode of "In Search of..." He asked what will Earth's inhabitants say to life from other worlds. I thought to myself what will *they* say to us? About a narrator who dedicated almost 50 years of his life to the role of a half alien being.

“Of all the souls I’ve encountered in my travels, his was the most… human” Spock’s loyalty to his friends and dedication to principle never wavered, even at the expense of his own life. This is how Kirk chose to honor his memory.

I've always felt that Spock and Data are my favorite characters because I value learning, reason, logic, empiricism, and science highly, and I love the journey they both take towards appreciating what it is to be "human". However, given my affection for Kirk and McCoy as well, I would be remis not to say that I really take the original trio as a whole. I see them as three constituent parts of a greater organism that is the balance of influences (dispassion and passion, knowledge and experience) Spock and McCoy represent finding harmony, purpose, and action through and within Kirk.
They are a unit, a gestalt, and together they accomplish far more than each would do individually. For them, the whole really IS greater than the sum of its parts.

Actuall Archer's Enterprise and Discovery fit well into the same universe but don't really fit into the original Star Trek universe nor into the Kelvin timeline (relaunch universe). In both series, Vulcans are arrogant assholes, and Klingons are.... even bigger hypocrits than they used to be.

One of the things that has always bothered me about Mr Spock (which you addressed) is that he is only half Vulcan yet has the same physiology, anatomy and mental abilities of a full Vulcan. We have seen in Star Trek before hybrid races such as half human/Klingons and they have always had watered down features of that particular race. That being the case Mr Spock’s ears should be less pointy, his eyebrows less slanty and his strength, longevity and mental abilities somewhat diminished to other Vulcans. His blood should be some sort of green/red mixture and his internal organs arranged differently. In Star Trek 6 he managed to mentally overpower Lt Valeris, a full Vulcan and in the Kelvin Timeline films lived to a ripe old age that a full Vulcan would live to.

His Brain wasn't physically and mentally vulcan enough to achieve kolinhar.
His child of 2 worlds dynamic made him an amazing diplomat.
His blood wasn't right to be given to his father. It needed to be heavily modified to be given to sarek.
His lifespan of 162 was due to being half human.

Humans breeding with aliens is, of course, as ridiculous as humans mating with petunias. Moreso, in fact. There is a quote from Roddenberry which suggests that Spock was more of a genetically engineered experiment than an actual human-Vulcan hybrid, which ameliorates the problem slightly. But at least there is a reason for his being part alien. In him there is a constant conflict between his rational side and his irrational side, something everyone can identify with, which is in part why he is such a popular character. None of the other human-alien or alien-alien hybrids in the Star Trek franchise have such a justification and are therefore simply absurd. Mere copying because of a lack of creativity.

    • @kimbridge
      @kimbridge 6 лет назад +2

Just because Vulcans might have believed that peace should not come through force doesn't mean that Vulcans would not resort to violence if necessary. On Voyager, Tuvok said that he used to teach at the Vulcan Defensive Arts Institute. This was centuries after Vulcan's "Great Awakening" on ST: Enterprise. I mean, the fact that Tuvok was a security officer, of all things . . . By the time he was on Voyager, Tuvok had spent a lifetime studying various martial arts and boasted of knowing some 90+ different ways to kill someone with just his finger . . .
This is the same race of people that let their children wander the desert unaccompanied as a right of passage. You don't do that without first equipping them with defensive skills as part of their survival training. While Vulcan force is usually defensive, Vulcans can use logic to justify anything, even an offensive strike to try to ward off a war mongering race like the Klingons on Discovery.
