So...

As a woman, this whole "the man pays for the first date" trope is a bit dated. I still appreciate a gentleman's gesture but had I been in that restaurant, I'd have felt Kristin was in the wrong to just leave. If I was on a date with someone who couldn't pay the bill, I'd have at least offered to pay for my half to help lower the cost. That is if I couldn't pay for the entire thing myself. When I was in high school I went to a bar/burger place with some friends after a football game. I spent 10 bucks on a burger with fries and a drink and went up to the counter to pay, when I realized my money was missing. Earlier that day I got gas after I left school and just shoved my change in my pocket and changed when I got home before the game, so my money was in my other pair of pants. After frantically searching my car and bumming a few bucks from my friends I went up to the lady still short like 7 bucks. There was this guy sitting at the bar, and he overheard us and said “is his total 10 bucks, put it all on mine” This guy was actually the coach from the rival team. I went up and shook his hand and he said “don’t worry about it buddy I got you” I still think about that one guy 5 years later, I only owed 10 bucks, but that guys act of kindness went a long way for a young and dumb high schooler.

@Hector Aldozar I should have been more specific...I was referring to the many episodes of this particular show where women and men have stood up for and financially helped members of the opposite sex in multiple situations. This particular episode was awful. I was disgusted by the women who told her to leave the poor guy, and thought the guys who stepped forward to help were stars! I just thought this episode wasnt reflective of people in general. If this happened to me in real life I would have been paying at least for my dinner anyway, and in this scenario, paid the whole bill and made sure the guy got home. I would feel sympathetic at the guys embarassment and appreciative that he had been offering to treat me to dinner, even if it had gone wrong. If he seemed like a nice guy, and he liked me too, I'd be hoping for a second date. If the same thing happened I'd know he was irresponsible or a free loader. If a woman (or man) abandons anyone in this situation they are a very mean, selfish and judgemental person, and if it was me, Id be glad I had seen their true colours before any more dates!

I dont think its anything to do with whether men pay for dinner more and some women expect it. Guys...its simple. On a first date, get the lady to book the restaurant. Be honest up front, that you expect to share the bill. Order modestly. Pay your share of the bill. If you like her, ask her on a second date, offer that it's your treat if you want to, or just leave it as expecting to share the bill. A woman who is interested in your character should respect honesty and boundaries and that you want to build a relationship based on trust. Hopefully, you may meet a lady who offers to treat you to the second date.

The men that offered to pay the young couple's bill came off either fatherly, good-spirted, or friendly to the guy. The first guy and son came off really down-to-earth, almost like a friend. The second guy helped him like as if he was his son --- you could see the dynamic between the two -- especially when the guy tried to reassure him and asked him to sit down so that his date wouldn't see he was getting money from the older guy. The last guy came off just concerned with a good samaritan attitude. The women responders largely came off like entitled women on their high horses. Crazy that all the ladies appeared to have no sympathy for the guy's economic plight. Maybe the card wasn't activated? Assets frozen due to fraud? Card was deactivated due to low use? etc. He did tell some of them that he wanted to get cash from an ATM, he would leave his ID. That's being responsible. The ladies just saw "loser" plastered all over him.

His credit card was declined, that was embarrassing sure but it wasn't like he was rude or violent. I had my card declined once because I didn't notify them I was leaving the country and they froze it for suspected theft, that was so embarrassing. Thankfully I had cash, but like...does that mean something bad about me as a person that it happened? No, it says I forgot to notify them. I feel like it's just that some older people haven't moved with the times. I most certainly have never felt pressured into paying for a dates meal, and in fact it has never even come up after a date - the bill comes around and my date has always pulled out their purse to pay for their own stuff without hesitation, and they didn't seem upset to do so either. In the past it wasn't so nonsensical to have a man paying for the date, women often did not have jobs due to the cultural norms at the time and how would they be able to afford to go on a date? But obviously that is not even close to being the case anymore, and the vast majority of women DO work now and CAN afford their own drinks and meals - I think some people just grew up the man pays and they will die thinking the man should pay without ever thinking critically about why that was the case and why it's no longer the case.

As a server, when a card is declined, I never straight up say that’s what happened to save them the embarrassment.
I usually just say that for some reason, our machine won’t take it and ask if there’s another way they can pay. They usually get the hint. It’s never been an issue.
I always feel so bad approaching the table though.

Equality for HUMAN RIGHTS. Do you men know what the difference is ? I've seen so many comments mentioning the same thing and alerting to the same ignorance. Human rights such as right to food, shelter, safety, education, vote, work etc (in 3rd world countries) and in first world countries it is the fight for the rights mainly of safety, privacy and non-discrimation based on sex.
Now to remedy the situation of the first date. The one who asks should pay out of manners. The other person can pitch in but is not necessary. The second date should be split, cause its a joint descision and possibly has the same enthusiasm.
Just to clarify, I dont believe the woman should have walked away like that. She should have pitched in seeing that he didnt have any other option but he is also dumb to not have extra cash with himself knowing he is taking her out on a date. Heck I have extra cash on me just going out to the shops or a place I dont know. You never know what will happen.

My son was in the army coming home on emergency leave when my husband was dying. He flew in from overseas where he was stationed and got his rental car, but his card was declined from being out of the country. A man behind him in line paid his bill, so he could be on his way. They exchanged info so my son could pay him back. When I sent an email to thank him, the man said he would do it again. There are good people in this world.

I’ve been at a checkout before where the card reader wouldn’t recognise the chip in my card because of a small break that I didn’t see. But I always carry a spare card or cash.
But believe it or not there are genuine reasons.

I won't help them because I'm not going to be taken advantage of. The ones I see where I live are all out in the parking lots of a strip mall, or a big dept store that are hiring, but do they go in to apply, no , they rather beg. Before you say, how do you know they haven't, well, I have first hand information that these places are crying for help, and they really take anyone who wants to work. People are lazy these days.
I am a restaurant manager and every time our guests' cards gets declined I always talk to the owners about anything just to make them comfortable, I also teach our waiters to do the same bec I know how that feels. Of course I have to make sure they don't run off, if worse comes to worst, I pay for the meal and just ask for a prayer in exchange. I am human first and a manager second.

I saw this situation for real once while in the checkout line at a Shaws Super Market. The person had put the card into the machine and the clerk loudly announced that the card had been declined for "insufficient funds". I spoke up and told the clerk that there is no way that she could have known the reason for the card being declined so she should have kept her mouth shut. The person used another card and everything was fine.
