A lot of what Big Z is as a player isn't even on the ice. The guy is fearless (only Russian to call Putin out) He's intimidating psychologically to opposing team. He keeps the team honest. He keeps the locker room light. He makes his teammates laugh. That off & on ice stuff is invaluable.. The guy wants to be here so just pay him and ship the dead weight we already do have (Cole, Mikheyev etc..)
Not gonna lie, I already gave in to the idea he wasn't coming back, but this gives me a glimmer of hope. If we want to be competitive for the next 5-10 years, we can't be locking up too much money in a guy just passing his prime. As usual, it comes to cap hit.
In 23-24, Myers made 6 mil, Hronek made 4.4 mil, Zadorov made 3.75 mil, Cole made 3 mil for a total of 17.15 mil. Brenden Dillon of the Jets made 3.9 mil, and Chris Tanev made 4.5 mil from Dallas. If the team trades Hronek for some assets and let Cole walk, sign Myers to a deal between 3 to 4 mil, Zadorov 5 mil with term, and bring in either Dillon or Tanev near what their current salaries are (my guess is that their value may actually go down as they are nearing the end of their career), that means the team would be paying 12 to 13.5 mil for three D men, which still leaves close to 4 mil of cap space to bring in another one or even two depth D-men (I think the team may need to upgrade on having Juulsen as the 6th defenceman). Having Myers, Zadorov and say Dillon on D gives the team that defensive toughness that it needs. The team can use the remaining cap space for some forward help too... So if Zadorov is willing to stay here long term, I don't mind over-paying him just a tad to get that done. His physicality in the playoffs is vital.
When you think about Myers getting 6 mill per and fans think 6 is to much? The guy hits fights and put up 20 goals for the flames in a season. Get it done Alvin.
Zadorov has been learning and getting better ever since he got to Vancouver. He said to his" coaches don't be afraid to yell at me" He wants to and has gotten better every week. He looks totally different to the red wings videos and I've heard earlier teams fans report he looks totally different from the player that played there. Sometimes you have to recognize the value of what is in front of your eyes. Dump Hronek. Take that money saved and add some of it to the Zadorov contract.
Sooo, I realize that this is all speculation, and probably none of what I’m about to propose could actually happen. But, just for fun, let’s look at a possible summer outcome for the Canucks: 1. Vancouver trades Philip Hronek for “whatever.” Hopefully they get a top six forward in return, but literally whatever. 2. Canucks sign Chris Tanev as a free agent. 3 years x 5 million. Maybe he takes this, maybe it will take a little more. He would definitely not be opposed to returning to Vancouver , it’s just a matter of money and length of contract. The Canucks have Willander in the system, who projects to be a top pairing right shot D, possibly in the next 3 years. Tanev would be a great bridge to the future, and can play on the top pair with Hughes, as long as they can get him at a reasonable price. 3. Canucks bring back Zadorov. They’ll probably have to overpay to some degree, but if Big Z wants to stay in Vancouver, it’s a possibility. During the regular season, it’s likely not worth the price, but if Vancouver expects to make the postseason every year, and Zadorov becomes a reliable playoff performer, then who cares what he does in the regular season? Maybe 5 x 5? 4. Bring back Myers. He wants to stay, the Canucks want him back. If this doesn’t happen, something went terribly wrong. 3 x 3. Last season. Hronek, Zadorov and Myers counted $14.2 million against the cap. My suggestions would come in at $13 million. At tweak here and there could bring that total up to $14m, which is basically a wash. It would clearly be preferable if it could be done for less, but Vancouver dodges the potential of a disastrous Hronek deal moving forward, solidifies their defence for the next few seasons, and builds a bridge to the future which will include Willander and D-Petey. It also leaves the Canucks with $10+ million to spend on their forward group and to add a top six winger, which they desperately need. I’m no cap expert, and maybe this is all nonsense, but I don’t think things are as bad as some believe. Of course, knowing Rutherford and Allvin, maybe they make moves that nobody else has even thought about yet. Time will tell.
With what you're suggesting, if Alvain and Ritherford can and want to pull it off, 10 mil would be enough to keep Joshua, and keep the chemistry of the Life Line together, and if they're able to convince Joshua to take a home discount, maybe that leaves just enough, with a Makeyev buyout or deal involving a prospect plus Makeyev with half salary retained, for some low level prospect, basically as a cap dump, buying the cap space with a decent prospect someone else wants and is willing to take half a Makeyev salary for 2 years to get. We might even free up an extra couple million to have enough to give Lindholm his 7.5 to 8 mil and keep him. If not, that's plenty to bring in a trade or free agent to fill that spot with someone else. If Rutherford and Alvain can work their magic again, maybe they get it in under that and we actually have a bit of free cap space to work with for once since the Benning Era!
Zadorov scored 4 goals in the playoffs and lets be real 2 of them had no real business going in. 6 goals and 14 assists in the season was a healthy scratch for the Canucks. He's a third pairing D so whoever is saying give him 6x6 or even 6x5 is on Big Z glue
If Big Z can maintain even half the level he rose to, and if Hronek does not come back down to Earth in his demands, I could see Big Z being a viable partner for Hughes. He's huge and hits like a truck, and can chip in with offense, while being a defensively responsible blueliner. AND, and here's the big one, if teams start trying to run Hughes like they did in the playoffs, they'll have Big Z to deal with. Just think about it. and if that doesn't work, we can always try Carson Soucy there, or find someone mid season to take over that spot.
As great and effective as Zadorov was in the regular season and playoffs with the Canucks, he's 29 years old and has never proven that he's a consistent top 4 defenseman over an 82 game schedule + playoffs. You could argue he was never put in positions to succeed, but those as the facts and at his age, what you see is what you get. He's at his ceiling. If he'll accept $5 million max, sure. But I highly doubt he will. $5 million for a 3rd pairing D is very expensive, and on this team, given the depth, he'd be a top 4 easily. The question is, can he be an effective top 4 defenseman over a full season and playoffs for however many years he's looking for? If the answer is yes and he accepts a reasonable salary, sure. But again, he's never proven he's a top 4 defenseman over a full season.
You should read @bradley8368's comment. He outlined a scenario where we can keep Myers, Zedorov, move Hronek and bring back Tanev all at reasonable amounts and still have the 3 d-men in his scenario be costing us less then Myers, Hronek and Zedorov's combined $14.2 mil cap hit What he suggested would be about a $13.5 mil combined for Tanev, Zedorov and Myers. That leaves an extra $0.7 mil of wiggle room to make it a wash if someone drives a hard bargain, or that can get added to about $10 mil of space left for retaining or bringing in the forwards we need. Literally with $10 mil, we could easily resign Joshua to the expected $3 mil he'll want, and if we can do something with Makeyev to reduce his cap hit, be it a buyout or a trade with salary retained and maybe sacrifice a prospect somebody else wants badly enough to tolerate 2 years of Makeyev at partial salary to get, we could have as much as $12 million for our forwards. with that much, we could give Joshua $3-3.5 mil, and keep him happy and have plenty left to give Lindholm his $7.5-8 mil and keep him here, and maybe still have a bit of cap space left over.
He wants too much money for a 20 point D-man. He is worth what he was making this season. Ya he has a another level when it comes to playoff time but players don't get paid in the playoffs they get paid for the regular season. The Playoffs are for sportsman and warriors. I am going to miss that warrior, he is indeed an old school D-man of the Canadian flavor. Wherever he lands the folks there will be happy he is there. Big Z is a first class act.
Did you NOT listen to him? He's saying he wants to stay here. that he likes it here, and his family likes it here. That he doesn't want to move around chasing a few extra bucks, that being on a contender and having stability for his family are what matters to him. He feels we are a contender. We're checking all the boxes, only ones left are up to Alvain and Rutherford to check, by offering him an acceptable long term deal that gives him what he really wants. If he wants long term stability and a cup, he may be willing to take 10-15% less then market value to leave some cap space to keep Joshua around, or do our best to try and replace the guy, so the team has an better chance at remaining a contender.
But on a serious note: trade Soucy, to Calgary. Trade Ian Cole to Edmonton since he made them alot of points. Let go of Desmith to new jersey. This will clear up alot of cap space plus I think these team in particular will give something good for them. Keep Lindholm on the trading block. That way you can keep him in the lineup for the time being. They are all good players but I don't think most of them want to play a 2nd (goalie) 2nd & 3rd line string as much. Probably be better for them and Vancouver in the long run. Sign Big Zee. If Dakota wants to go, then trade him or let him go. Ps I'm just speculating on what I would want them to do.
$3.75x7 is the same as $5.3x5. If he wants security sign him to 7x $3.25M and structure the contract so that the last 2 years he make $1M salary no bonuses…
@JeremyCuddles he wants term so his family can be settled in for years to come. $3.25-3.75 for 7/8 years is a win win for both parties.. structure the contract to be able to be bought out or trade in the last 2/3 years… pay him the bonuses ip front so he can invest or do whatever he wants
He wants to stay, he wants to be a leader, he wants to win a cup, really what more can you ask for from a talented player sign the guy already!!
Take a pay cut! Just asking.
He's saying the right things. Now, just put it in action by agreeing to a lower market value so there's extra cap space to sign better players.
He wants a one way ticket out of town
sign him ...

Re sign Big Z ffs
out of all our FA's he's the one I'm hoping we sign the most
The guy is a machine. Worth more than Hronek for sure. Sign him. He’s almost as valuable as Hughes in his own way.
In 23-24, Myers made 6 mil, Hronek made 4.4 mil, Zadorov made 3.75 mil, Cole made 3 mil for a total of 17.15 mil. Brenden Dillon of the Jets made 3.9 mil, and Chris Tanev made 4.5 mil from Dallas. I REALLY BELIEVE Z WILL DO GOOD THINGS FOR US
SIGN HIM!!!!
He should go to the KHL he did nothing in the Edmonton series!!!! The big Z was a big Zero
Siberia 😮 nobody wants to go there 😊, pay him to stay with the Canucks avoid future regrets ❤
haha he did the exact same thing to the flames last year.

I would rather have playoffs dawgs than guys who disappear in the post season

He's to smart for that

Replace Big Z with Brenden Dillan.

Bring Cash is the term for BC
Since when do the Canucks care about locker room guys?
They kicked Tanev to the curb, he was the team’s “Dad”

But on a serious note: trade Soucy, to Calgary. Trade Ian Cole to Edmonton since he made them alot of points. Let go of Desmith to new jersey.
