I've watched this movie 3 times now, it doesn't get any easier to watch, but the subject matter is important and still relevant today sadly.

Am I the only one who thinks Florence's father abused her on the boat- which kinda explains her fear of intimacy...?
The brief flashback she had after the bedroom calamity certainly suggests that !

definitely a history lurking there. that was my memory of reading the book -- it was more inferred (never stated) probably to reflect the desire of the character to not address

at the very heart of this film (and book) are the hidden consequences of child abuse.

Also, I love that they shot it on 35mm, it was so gorgeous

I saw the film and liked the 60's settings. This won't hit the heights, or be heaped with accolades, but has a fairly simple story with complex character issues. As for the film itself, It does not have a happy ending and left the cinema with a feeling of sadness.

I thought the ending was bittersweet. He forgave her, and honoured his promise to support her.

I agree w Mark on just about everything. How tragic that they gave up before envisaging a change in the future for her... a change she really underwent... w the cellist. Perhaps not a great love, but 5 children? Didn’t like the over make-up at the end... unnecessary.

3 children and 5 grandchildren. Not so many I'd say.

All about repressed English upper middle classers in the 60s. I would say accurate of ppl that generation. Enjoyed it because the actors are so good and it looks beautiful.

Can someone at the BBC please, please PLEASE adjust the focus on the camera pointed at Mark. For some years, it was focused on the green microphone, and now it's focused on the glass backdrop. Either way, Mark is constantly in an annoyingly soft, blurry focus, and I'm pretty sure he's not that fuzzy in real life.

The film maybe long & poorly directed in parts, however the film’s well acted, well written, stylish & well casted Ian McEwan adaptation. (70%) (3.5/5 stars) (positive)

And she should have been open with person she wants to marry. Talk about her difficulties and anxieties and not just go into marriage like that

I think Edward must have had some suspicion that Florence was frigid before they married. After a couple of drinks, I suspect that Edward would want to get amorous with his beautiful fiancée.

  • @thebarnaclebill

Every critique or synopsis I’ve read of this film misses the point at it’s very heart which is of course the hidden consequences of child abuse. i.e. why would a young girl be frigid and freak out at a premature ejaculation and how many other lives are affected, including the cello player.

McEwan now writes boring books about middle class people doing extremely middle class things in excruciating detail.
