my girlfriend and I met online when we were both sixteen. we spent two months getting to know each other, with both of us realizing about a month in that we were falling for each other.
I asked her to be my girlfriend, officially, on her seventeenth birthday.
we had to keep everything under wraps. my parents are definitely homophobic, and hers were unpredictable.
while I worked on hiding the fact that she existed from my parents, she worked up the courage to tell her mother on the day she graduated from high school. while not pleased... her mother wasn't angry.
and before we knew it, we were both starting college.
move in day came for both of us.
and on that day, the distance between us went from 225 miles to 69.
and then it became my turn to work up some courage.
"mom, I have a friend who goes to a nearby college. I'm going to spend the night with her next weekend."
and from there, the time ticked down. we were slated to see each other the first time the day before our 18 month (semi)anniversary.
I cleaned my room, I packed a bag, and I walked out to my car.
almost two hours of driving later, I saw her face for the first time.
I stepped out of my car and forgot to close the door. the only thing I could think about was getting my arms wrapped around her body as tightly as I could manage.
she was crying, I was giggling, hysterical on two different ends of the spectrum.
the day prior, I had never heard her voice without a screen intercepting the sound. the day after, I woke up in her arms to the feeling of her pressing little kisses to my lips.
we're planning on spending another night together next weekend.
long distance is difficult, it can be heart wrenching. it can be incredibly sad.
but when you're waiting for someone you love, it's very rewarding and very worth it.
