Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.
During summer, yes
Winter in a C hut not much better
Two Bears High-Fiving!
We can't expect God to do all the work.
I got spurs that jingle jangle jingle
Can we drop that interim line from Karl's title, i mean let's face it, he has pretty much become the face of Top10z / Bio / Geo graphics, and we all have to appreciate the bowlingballs on a guy who openly admits his surname is smallwood haha, keep it up Karl
16:52 My father helped design that cannon, he shows up for a half-second in the film "The Atomic Cafe" talking to General McFarland.
Gotta say i'm really enjoying geographics (etc) with Karl. I know Simons take on just about everything now, and had found my interest waning on some channels after over-simon-saturation. Now, we get Karl, and its resparked my interest in the channels he's now hosting :-)
so about "paying people to stop suing them" bit, the script made considerable effort to emphasize the whole evil capitalism theme there, but I have to say, the reason people sue in the first place is to be compensated for the unrightful damages done to them. That's just how American legal system works
If you look at the Google Earth image over the Nevada Test Site, you can see all the big holes in the ground from the tests.
The radiation didn't just blow over Saint George
It also affected mesquite, a town on the border, and ended with many residents getting cancer. Including my grampa who worked at the rest site and died from cancer about 12 years ago
I’m sorry to hear that.
@@--enyo-- thank you i appreciate that
In 2018, the State of Nevada sued the federal government to block a plan to ship "more than a metric ton" of plutonium to the site for temporary storage.
In 2022, the government acknowledged that 13,625 cubic meters of radioactive material conforming to its disposal criteria had been shipped to the site for disposal.

Very good video. Can you make a video on how Mount St Helen’s formed lakes during the 1980 eruption? Or how the deepest lake in the United States aka Crater Lake was formed due to a collapsed volcano?
Kyle Hill pretty thoroughly debunked the hypothesis that filming "the Conquerer" was a major factor in later cancers, etc. for the cast and crew.
great job Sir Karl on narration. Diggin your stuff so far.
Simon finally used Keeps, nice
Nuclear "frisson" is defined as that tingly sendation you get when a device of that nature is detonated. BTW, I've had my arsenal inspected ( it's called a colonoscopy ) and it's doing just fine, thank you. No polyps present.
So there was no "fallout" then?
Bragging about anal probing is all the rage. In Clown World.
The Welcome to Nevada sign always sort of reminded me of a mushroom cloud.
WHERE IS SIMON GOD DAMN IT
He left about 6 months ago. Karl has presented the last 14 videos
They knew how to build the bombs; so, why did they endlessly "test" them? I mean, they blow up, right? (Oh, brother.)
Love having karl , you killed it ! I even watched the ad
@16:10 The Sedan Crater is the largest man-made crater in the continental United States, but not the largest man-made crater overall. I would say that title could go to Castle Bravo, whose crater is 6,500 feet (2,000 m) in diameter and 250 feet (76 m) in depth.
Ahh, those Mormons ! Don't smoke, don't drink alcohol but surprisingly OK with above-ground nuclear testing !
being 72, i remember a lot of these. the 2 movies were great. i also remember the duck & cover school-drills, along with tv reporting of many of the testings. we actually held a panama canal debate in school. scarey. nice job ks.
This is so interesting… When you were a child, did you understand the gravity of these drills and how maybe someday it would be the real deal?
Oppenheimer is not the father of the atomic bomb. He was a high level manager in the project. The US Government as a whole decided to develop a nuclear device and also thousand of scientist worldwide were already working on the subject, so it's impossible to point a finger who's really "the father of the atomic bomb".
In almost every group achievement the guy in charge gets 99% of the credits
Wait what? The whistlerverse is crumbling.
Another great video, man. Keep it up.
More to come!
For anyone interested, the Soviet Union actually once employed a small Nuclear Device to permanently seal an Out of Control Natural gas Well that had caught on Fire. Which worked as intended and sealed said Well for good.
There are huge bubbles under the desert created by strategic nukes where they can test tactical nukes.
I love how Karl basically does his best Simon impression for this show. It's great!
Simon with hair
Simon makes a new channel called “places” because he sold this one! I I don’t get it. Was he forced to sell this ?? It’s almost like he hit 1 mil subs and got rid of it.
But why start a clone of this channel if you’re just trying to get rid of it ??
@@JoeRogansForehead unless i missed something, that's not what happened. Karl even said he's the interim host, just filling in.
@@alexcrouse gotta read between the lines . You kinda look like Simon if he had hair . Maybe that’s why you can’t see it !❤️
@@JoeRogansForehead Karl works for Simon... You are inventing things.
My favorite part of seeing that mushroom cloud from Able Baker is seeing the Prinz Eugen in the column. It's the long black vertical "shadow" on the right-hand side.
That is not Prinz Eugen. The German cruiser survived both blasts, though severely irradiated by Baker. It was eventually towed to Kwajalein where it sank, and where its wreck remains today. The "long black vertical 'shadow'" to which you refer is the ex-USS Arkansas...
Found this informative. Dont know the channel so all the Simon comments are lost on me other than my auto-empathy response. Any chance of a video on NORAD in Colorado?
Next do the UK and Australian testing!
It’s interesting but nowhere near as extensive as was the US testing program. Australia experienced only a handful of tests while the Nevada National Security Site (formerly Nevada Test Site) alone experienced 928 detonations.
Smallwood also known as a Thicket or Strand
This realy made me chuckle
I'm assuming we'll be seeing a video on the Soviet/Russian nuclear weapons testing & the effects they had on Soviet/Russian citizens & environments?
Already on this channel.....
Karl, I was in need of a stuffed animal to caress while I watched your video because of all the nuclear testing done on US soil and abroad since the dawn of Nuclear Bombs.... it's just horrifying!!
US government: -drops a bunch of nuclear bombs-
Karl: that kills people!
Oddly, the clip of nuclear explosions you show at 13:09 which seems to be from Dr. Strangelove were mostly filmed in the Pacific. It kind of undermines your point, which is mostly true, that most nuclear footage does come from Frenchman's Flat.
I am all for Carl becoming our host and not just the interim host. But he has to bring snoot I love that little guy
All of these "where's Simon" comments make me sad for both Simon and whoever the host of the day is.
I'm getting pretty tired of it myself. Karl's doing a fantastic job.
@@geographicstravel you guys are all doing amazing work. Hecklers gonna heckle I suppose.
The fun thing is that the comments still feed the algorithm positively for the channel. So, trolls CAN be useful.😂
Yeah, that's true. Everyone respond to these guys. There's no way THAT could backfire, right?
@@geographicstravel Not respond, I think that's why they do it, but enjoy their feeding the algorithm in your favor.
Castle Bravo was a fixed ground based hydrogen bomb. It was agiabt immovable structure full. Of the fissile material they also used deuterium and tritium.
Karl and Simon are like a collab at this point.
Wait until you find out how Karl got his start..............
is it safe to live in nevada?
"Just don't worry about the fallout. :)"
Eugh. Nauseating..
Murica is like North Korea x 10 but with good public relations
My birthday is the same day as Nagasaki. I think that could be why I have a fascination with nuclear weapons.
Love your work karl! Keep going! Please do agincourt
Thanks! Will do!
@@geographicstravel awesome
Howdy from Temple, Texas, USA!
How are the displaced Bikini Atoll people doing now? I remember Simon did a few videos on what happened after but I think it was a few years ago now.
I agree with Dustin Carnes - well said.
Wow, Simon grew his hair back
I was born in 1958 so I grew up through a good bit of this. I did, however, miss all the duck and cover silliness.
I'm so glad there's no comments dissing the U.S for this testing.
because the Soviets Gen Zs love so much tested it on their on population.
the U.S did have accidents with their military though
Great video but god I’m sick to death of RUclips interrupting it with crap ads. Tell Simon please! Also doing this on other channels and I have said the same on their channels
20:07 Didn't the movie producers truck in a bunch of sand from the filming location to recreate "the look" on-set?
To the town of agua fria rode a stranger one fine day
How did South Africa 🇿🇦 get hold of and test nuclear weapons?😮 who were the going to use them against?
Go Karl go !
There is a bar in Las Vegas called the atomic Café which is on Fremont Street. When I lived there in Las Vegas, it was a rundown bar in a crackhead neighborhood. And no I did not see Hunter Biden anywhere. Stories had it the people would come to this bar so it’s the climb up on the roof to watch the nuclear explosions. Fremont Street has been cleaned up into a very nice tourist area all the way from the plaza hotel out to Eastern Avenue, and the revamped atomic café is open for business. In other interesting news, there is a nuclear test museum East of the north part of the Strip
Very interesting video. And try not to take all the hate about Simon not narrating personal. This guy's a great host and people just need to calm down.
Karl is indeed a fantastic host. He came in with near zero experience working with a teleprompter, and he's crushing it now. Dude picked the skill up like a sponge.
Paul Harvey debunked the relation of those actors getting cancer from radiation fallout. All of these people also smoked cigarettes daily. This doesn't discount the possible effects radiation fallout, but the tobacco is more likely the reason. (Consider the cigarettes have their own radioactive byproducts.)
Enjoyed video.
I watch now at .75 speed playback. Improves the rhythm and tempo of the narration for me.
A little too reminiscent of teachers who dish out infomation too quick. 🙂
Same, but he still seems snobby somehow. Can't quite put my finger on it. Good info regardless.
In retrospect, it could be simply that he's reading his narration aloud and not speaking freely. The narration of the guy on the Ancient Architects utube channel is similar in that manner. I typically just bite my tongue and enjoy the info provided while not grinding my teeth over it. Typically, lol.

Duly noted! Thank you for the support!
@@geographicstravel Always
Love you Anteater
I Have a Porcupine
LMAO 🤣🇨🇦🤣
I can't help but wonder about the ecological damage caused by weapon testing, versus the damage caused by nuclear power electricity generation. I suspect nuclear electricity generation's effects is infinitesimal in comparison as far as damage and safety. In other words, nuclear power is the best, safest, least damaging way to produce electricity on a massive scale. There is a waste issue, but it is starkly less than weapon testing's legacy.
You should watch Kyle hills video on nuclear waste. It’s not really an issue.
Karl!? Not talking about robocop!?
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!? its karl from fact fiend!
Damn where’s Simon
He left.
@@geographicstravelget him back, Please.
You do realize that it's not that easy, right? That what's done is done? Simon made his choice, and there is literally nothing we can do to change it. He's moved on to other projects. That's that. Karl is doing a fantastic job with hosting. He's got a history with these channels, with TopTenz etc, and he's one of the main reasons why Simon, Today I Found Out, and TopTenz took off. He deserves this shot.
@geographicstravel Fair enough. I didn't know the extent of the separation, until this moment. Hope all will be well.
He left 6 montgs af. Karl has done the last 15 videos
Liking and Commenting because Fiend Boy asked nicely
Seriously. I have a video of the EPA Farm C4 demolition.
@4:52 Smallwood states that "the US sucks"... IF not for the US, Mr. Smallwood, the British Isles would be one of the smallest provinces under Russian domination. :p
Good video!
C’mon America; give Karl some love. PhoenixAz. Remember that this was in the 40’s; today’s younger generation has been wholly miseducated regarding the norms, customs, ethics, and knowledge of past times.
Dr. Strangelove another Peter Sellers classic, along with Slim Pickens
Well when you pretty much start a video literally saying, the US sucks, it makes it kind of difficult. I haven't really liked British people since 1776 so, no. I choose not to.
Boys and their toys.
Aquifer is a noun, not a verb. ''aqui😃FER"
Ok Karl. I’ll comment too!!
There is an error in the beginning. It is stated that the United States kicked the locals off of bikini atoll without their consent. This is not true. The United States got the consent of the locals, but they promised the locals they would be able to return after the tests were over. They were returned to the atoll after a period of time, but then they started getting sick, so they were taken away again.
Dubious consent is not consent. They were not made aware the tests would make their home uninhabitable. That’s why when they sued they won.
I was told my grandfather was the sole survivor of one of the nuclear test sites in Nevada that had live US soldiers involved. He died of cancer much later in life but had medical issues for the entire time I knew him, always had a neck brace on, and many more issues I believe associated with the testing fallout. He died quite a while ago and I never asked Dad much about him since he wasn't involved much in any of our lives, especially Dad's so I have seen him only a handful of times before he died. Funny thing, if grandma didn't keep his records even after divorce, the military would have been successful in denying him attendance as well as responsibility for medical care that they tried so hard to do.
Karl Karl Karl.... we warned you not to go near Simon's summer house.
Now you are stuck in the basement as well. I hope you get on well with Danny and Sam.

@@geographicstravelit's unfortunate, but also kind of amusing, to see the amount of outrage over statements like "the US sucks"
We had a strange incident a while ago in which there was a large blast up by Ogden, Utah and people were confused about what is going on. The state claimed after-the-fact that they detonated a rocket booster, but did not inform the public that it was going to happen. Mind you the area where they did this is well known for cruise missile testing. We all know the U.S. is wanting to develop hypersonic cruise missiles like China, and it seems awfully convenient we had a mysterious blast a a cruise missile testing site with no public warning beforehand. Sounds like wanting to cover up hypersonic cruise missile testing. I am not into conspiracy theories but in this case its more likely than not. If you were just destroying a rocket booster, you would have warned the public that at a certain time there was going to be a large blast. It sounded like a sofa was dropped on the roof of my building from space. It was a huge thud.
Maybe sonic boom as something went supersonic?
@@LordDustinDeWynd that wouldn't make a lot sense for the state to report it was a rocket booster detonation then.
@@terrafirma5327 It'd be the Military reporting it, not the State. The State is generally not the brightest station in the flow of information.
