These are rarely made out of metal. And even when they are, that's less of a security feature (they're too thin to protect against anything more threatening than maybe a small tree branch falling against it, and someone willing to go through the window could easily cut them or shove them aside), and more a durability thing. Thicker metal shutters are as commonly used for closing up regular entrances in the US as they are in germany.
they are and they are not. they are not for safety but its so much of a struggle to get in there that you never hear someone destroyed one and the window to get in ... at that point just breaking the door is easier, so it IS a way to make ur window safer and honestly when a burglar has the choise he probably chooses one without just because its easier@@hannessteffenhagen61
@@hannessteffenhagen61 here the mechanism is mainly build in a way that it is anchored in the wall rather than the window. it also completely shuts the window off. there are no gaps or something. it's of course not indestrucktable, but it at least tripples the time needed to break into a window (without smashing it), which is most of the time enough to scare off burglars
When I was in Los Angeles for the first time and wanted to get a glass of water at the hotel..... The water from the tap was as white as milk. That's what the meme refers to. In Germany, water is the most monitored "foodstuff" of all. It's crystal clear everywhere
1:10 The problem with a curtain is that, the sun shines a lot in the summer, and a curtain collects the sunshine's warmth inside the house, whereas "curtains" outside the house keeps the house cool.
11:41 from Germany you can use the train to drive into a different country like French the Netherlands Poland Austria Switzerland you can even use the train from French to England :D
The german phrase "auf jeden Fall" could be translated to "of course", because it's an affirmation, but it means it a bit stronger. It means something along the lines of "no matter what else might be coming up, our plans are fixed". Also the the question before that, isn't just "wanna go drinking", because "saufen" is "drinking alcohol in large amounts".
The label for the limes is an e-ink label, you have to type the text it should display into the smartphone, which links to these. I'm guessing the person opened the wrong app on his phone and just typed the message to his girlfriend, which he nicknames "Zuckermaus", "sugar mouse" in english.
I guess the "drinking tap water" is supposed to confuse Americans, because "Germans only drink sparkling water". But we tap water drinkers do exist in Germany.
As a teenager, I was visiting relatives in the USA. Admittedly, that was 40 years ago, but the tap water smelled and tasted as if I had drunk from a German swimming pool at the time. Somehow full of chlorine. And for my relatives, it was completely normal to drink it. 🤷🏼♀️ So doesn't say much about the quality of the tap water when you drink it Ryan. 😉
yep. i was always warned not to drink it in the USA, because of lead in the pipes and that it would cause brain damage. all water used for cooking and drinking came from bottles xD
It wasn't chlorine. The US adds fluorine to tab water. The idea is to increase the dental health of the people. And yes, apparently you get used to it. But many Americans still buy their water at the grocery store.
@@psibiza Very strange. Here in Germany, there are even limits on how much natural fluorine may be contained in drinking water. If the amount is too large, the water must no longer be drunk. I mean, hey, there is actually enough fluoride in the normal foods to cover the daily requirement, even vegans can meet their needs through green tea. Is it actually known in the U.S. population that fluorosis (too much fluorine in the body) does exactly what should be prevented by taking fluorine? An overdose of fluorides can lead to what is known as dental fluorosis. This disease causes a softening of the tooth and bone substance.
That price tag at 1:59 is not printed out. It is an electronic price tag with an e-paper display, which is pretty commonplace these days. Somebody hacked into it and left a message for their love interest, apparently. It reads: "Hello my sweetheart. I can't wait to see you again. Sincerely yours, Maik. A huge hug for you." It's anybody's guess how the message's intended recipient is supposed to get it - perhaps they work in the supermarket, perhaps they're known to shop for lime in that supermarket... It's nice :) (though probably not for the supermarket employees and their tag provider).
One can only hope that the supermarket has changed that by now, because it's legally required to declare the country of origin. Especially organic products are under strict rules to get the certification, and such a major declaration failure really shouldn't happen.
That's right, these price tags are also common in some supermarkets, somehow really clever, although with the specific price tag I find it confusing that it doesn't even say which product it is, etc.
The label for the limes is an e-ink label, you have to type the text it should display into the smartphone, which links to these. I'm guessing the person opened the wrong app on his phone and just typed the message to his girlfriend, which he nicknames "Mausi", a "cute-ification" of "Maus" ("mouse" in english).
11:46 - "Sounds pretty futuristic. Imagine, being able to take a train to a different country!" Erm, yes, that's what we have been doing in Europe for 150 years! :-D A few decades ago, the Interrail ticket was a big thing, you may want to google that!
"Imagine taking a train to a different country" 😂😂😂😂 Dude, this is normal in Europe. I've gone by train from Germany to London... no Ferries, no plane, just a train (the rhyme was unintended, sorry). I went from Germany to Belgium without switching trains. And to Vienna. And Zürich (Swizerland). And the Netherlands... traveling from one country to the other by train is like a daily thing.😂😂😂
@@kingofmontechristoContinental Europe is slightly bigger than the US by land area and there are borders in Europe, even though many of them aren't active.
@@kingofmontechristo Ok, I'm not sure where you are from (no insult intended here, since I really don't know and facts about different continents, coutries and cities are not on a basic daily agenda), but Europe is not - like - tiny (about 4.2 million square kilometers). I know the US is bigger (about 9.8 million kilometers), but still. And there are borders, but since Europe has the Schengen-Agreement these are open without visum for European nationals. It would translate from traveling from one US State to the next or from Texas to Mexico. Still workable. And yes, it is possible for a Italian to travel all the way through Austria and Germany to take a train to London. Would take time, but it qould be more than doable. And from Germany to London is still under water, so 🤷🏼♀️. Of course Germany is in the middle, so traveing from here is easy. This doesn't mean, it's imposible. Just takes time and a good book.
I once walked into another country when taking a short stroll in the evening after arriving at a hotel. (That was over a decade ago, but I managed to find the location on Google Maps. And it turns out I misidentified the country I walked into back then. I had walked into Belgium, not the Netherlands. Oops.) ((10 brownie points to whoever identifies the hotel I stayed back then.))
Because Google sucks at translating in some cases, the meaning depends on the context, here are some translations (if context based, there are timestamps) Brudi = Bro Auf jeden Fall = yeah sure / yes, absolutely 3:30 Platte = board / panel Diggah = dude / bro 6:27 Lases = reddit (redd -> read [past] = las; it = es; reddit is english so it is funny to find a "translation" to german for it and use it) And here are some explainations: 2:55 I guess the calendar doesn't mean anything and it is just about the woman with the phone 3:34 Tisch = table; platte = board; We call the tabletop "Tischplatte" because it is the board on the table" 4:27 Sahra Wagenknecht is a german politician who had quit the party she was in to make a new one. And many people think the new party will be kinda successful. The newspaper right to it with the title "We are scared" has nothing to do with the first newspaper but these two newspapers next to each other are funny because it looks like the people are scared. 5:12 It's not about christmas carols being too loud but about christmas carols being already played in fall 9:22 There had been some issues with the conservative party (CDU/CSU) and sometimes the word is used for far-right people 11:03 The tap water quality in germany is perfect and there's the prejudice that in the USA you don't drink tap water because bottled water is better so this should be confusing
"lases" => "lass es" => "don't do it" The calendar stands for "society regressed 40 years over night". "conservative" in this context is using the original meaning of the word. So, people who think society should work like it did 50 years ago...and have no qualms telling you they don't approve of you being more modern. (Imagine the Amish suddenly deciding to join the American national sport of "telling other people how to live".)
11:03 germans got the prejudice, to murricans dont know, you could drink the tap water. that assumption comes from watching an uneducated society eating fastfood and drinking softdrinks "only", whats proven by the high average bmi at us american people.

Noise reduction of any kind seems very stereotypical for Germany, but once you've been to Germany for a week, you'll really appreciate it. And I see why noise is so controlled over there. If you are constantly in a noisy environment, you eventually get sick. You never enter the deep sleep phase which has negative impact on your body, never rested well enough, and your body is under constant stress.
Noise reduction is ok, but what Ryan didn't understand in 8:25 is, that living on the countryside isn't always bette when it comes to noise. First Patrick complains about the negative sides of country life and Spongebob complains about living in a city, but both complain about noise. People moving from the city to the country side, because they think there it would be much calmer and then they notice that birds can be very loud in the morning, if you prefer to sleep with an open window. In the summer always a neighbor mows his lawn or has a grill party in the garden, in autumn the leaf blowers make noise. In the night you can hear single cars from a streets 500 m away, while in the city you can have a small and completly quiet side street 100 m away from a bigger, noisy street, because it is so well noise protected by the houses built directly to each other. Overall the noise level on the country side is lower, as in the city, but people can adapt their tolarance for noise. In the city there is so much background noise, after some time you don't hear that anymore, while you easily can hear a single annoying noise living in a village.
@@red.aries1444 This is not completly true. Like adhs blessed people are not able to shut down common noices just in the mind. This is the reason for their concentration difficulties. If you live at the country side, like I did in my youth, or in a big city, which I dead after studying, it is always like living and working while carneval, CSD or under a roller coaster. Living in a noisy world for me is like living in a world of traps you cannot avoid for a person with a broken leg.
It seems to be a difference in west and east. In west germany, when I call the police because a drunken neighbour in a house opposite the street is yelling from 22:00 to 23:00, they will come and tell him to stop or otherwise he will sleep in a cell. In east germany I told the police the man yelled from 22:00-02:00 in the night, every night since a week and they want come. Later I met a man who moved away as he was his direct neighbour and that was four years earlier! It seems like west germany has more traditional values of old people like safetyness, calmness and in the east police is more on the youth, rebel side of partying and destroying. You are totally right I hardly can sleep deep a whole night and it seems I am always ill since I am moved to the east. In west germany we were/are not aware of so many differences that exist in east germany because you do not hear them in common media and politicians tried to ignore even fight stories of differences like from day one of reunification. But me being from the dutch border feel more close to people of netherlands and west countries as to east germans who feel more close to poland and east countries.
But maybe the behavior of neighbours is more a difference of having normal to good income and more civilized places I could live in the west and the "Plattenbau-Siedlungen" I have to live in these years. And maybe the police seems to be more lazy here because they know otherwise (acting immediately), will bring x times more work when people could realize that service.
"amazing that they exist in a country that still uses overhead projectors" man, you know where to hit to make it hurt. but I'm almost sure that the manually lowered version of those thinks (Rollladen) has been around for longer than overhead projectors
Brudi: colloquial for "Bruder" (engl. Brother) means Bro Diggah (copied from Quora): Originally, this is a term of endearment for a little, somewhat overweight boy, used a lot in Northern German family language as “Dicker” (closest engl. eqivalent fatty; "dick" is german for thick ot fat). Its use which had largely been restricted to little boys until the 1990s somehow entered the Hamburg city language right at the time the German rap scene exploded in that city. Around the turn of the century, one suddenly started hearing “Dicker”, later mimicking the Hamburg slang pronunciation “Digger” or “Digga” more in more in rap/hip hop and general city slang, its use extended to any male person the user sees as his buddy, maybe something like “homie” in American hiphop slang. After possibly centuries of use as a familial term of endearment for little boys and decades after it entered the “city slang” of Hamburg, this word really only exploded in the 2010’s when suddenly everybody started to use it, even outside of Northern Germany. Since its transition from “Dicker” to “Digga”, I’m not even sure everyone in the rest of Germany who uses it is aware of the fact that it’s just “Dicker” with a Northern German pronunciation.
I thought the origin was more of a "Freunde durch dick und dünn" best friends through thick and thin. And then Dicker is a reference to that phrase and then became Digga
Some people can get pretty riled up by the suggestion that it refers to overweight ppl. Apparently it is shorthand of "Dicker Freund", meaning like "Bestie", very good friend. It just happens to also sound like calling someone fat, but from context the distinction usually can be gleamed.
I was not aware of this, I just naturally pronounced it that way because I don't like German Rap :) also there is a really inapropriate Helmut Kohl Joke where Digger is the punchline :)
As someone working in teacher education at a university in germany, I love that you come back to the overhead projectors at schools time and time again :) you sound like my students! :D
i like them actualy, and i was in school last in the 90`s. but it is normal in germany that we have no wide range of digital stuff in any school, where in japan in most schools kids have there own tablet from the schools, and no books and other stuff too carry around anymore, we life in the stone age compared too them. one thing i must mention these tablets are school only, they must give them back when they finish school. and if they are damaged or are someway not in the same as like when they where given too them from the school, the parents of the child must pay the shool for it. and it can get very expensive because they are allways the most modern tablets that are available. thats why parents in japan allways thought the child from the start, so that they handle stuff they not own very carefully.
Last meme: Over here america has a reputation for bad quality tap water, probably due to the whole Flint situation. That said, when I was in Pittsburgh the water there was chlorinated so tap water basically tasted like pool water (technically safe to drink, but we bought a waterfilter just to make it _slightly_ more bearable), IDK if they do that in many places in the US but it was ass. Chlorination for tap water is rare in germany, and it's never fluoridated (which to my understanding is pretty common the US). For the most part, my understanding is that there's not much of a difference in terms of water safety (I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in germany you could find 1 or 2 communities with bad tapwater either), but water is more consistently... drinkable in Germany. Also, this has probably been mentioned a million times but "Lases" is just a funny translation of "Reddit" (Reddit coming from "read it", which translates to "las es" in german - intentionally bad or nonsensical translations are an ongoing meme in the ich_iel sub).
My guess is that it's not fluoridated because Germany doesn't produce nuclear weapons. As a byproduct of nuclear weapons production, fluoride was produced. There was a huge problem in how to get rid of it. The government started adding it to the water supply because it's supposed to be good for teeth. Meanwhile fluoride is already added to toothpaste and some mouthwash. Too much flouride is absolutely horrible for your bones, among other things. The "conspiracy theory" of fluoridation being a government conspiracy is often used to show someone being crazy. Prior to 9/11 it was the second most common conspiracy theory after the JFK assassination. Now it's mostly forgotten. 😔
Not only Flint has issue with tap water being not drinkable as far as I know. Just the most infamous case. Pretty horrendous in any case for the richest country of the world. At least they got rid of the lead poisoning, so yay progress?
@@DST.73 Because in certain parts of the US drinking tap water makes you sick or even worse. Not to mention all the lead poisoning that went on for a very long time in poor parts of cities.
@@Priestofgoddess Far from the richest country in the world. Having the biggest GDP doesnt make the people rich. Most Americans are poor. Especially considering the cost of living. If you look at GDP adjusted for purchase power parity, China is the richest country in the world, and has been for a long time. If you look at median wage, Americans still make the most money, besides some tax havens like Luxembourg or Monaco, but that doesnt take into account their healthcare costs or rent, or cost of food. If you take those things into account, most countries in Europe have wealthier people, as well as many countries in Asia.
Yes, we have clean toilets in our fastfood joints. AND we have a cleaning checklist hanging next to the entrance of each toilet facility where the employees have to document the cleaning. They have to wet-sweep the rooms every two hours or so and check for other stuff that needs cleaning. And woe if the inspection team arrives and the list isn't kept/signed and/or the work isn't done. Then it RAINS fines for the franchisee.
The confusion thing with the water is just because tap water in Germany always meets or exceeds the quality of store bought water. In the US, there are places where tap water is either not safe to drink (Flint MI, some parts of the southern states) or not tasty because it it treated with chlorine, corrosion inhibitors and water softeners.
About the whole "10 million dead in China, 2 Germans"-Thing. News outlets do that for a reason it´s to inform people who have relatives currently in the area. So they can check up on their relatives or contact the government/embassy in that country for updates.
04:10 it's not about that. One of my German friends was in Thailand during a flood disaster. all communication was interrupted. no one knew anything about the friend. hearing on the news that no germans have been found so far has kept hope alive that he is okay. Luckily he came back unharmed.
Explanations: 1.) Brudi is like bro. 2.) Auf jeden Fall = definitely 3.) Scharf doesn't just refer to spicyness, it can also mean sharp, or how clear/high-def a picture or movie is. 4.) Unser Hund wurde schon zweimal angeschossen = Our dog's already been shot twice Kein Auto, kein Entkommen = no car, no escape 5.) Diggah=Dicker=Alter=dude. Also, the final beatles song has just been released in 2023 using AI.
Wasn't that "Einkommen" (income), not "Entkommen" (escape)? (Sorry for not looking it up, but if I scroll up to the video now, I'll never find this comment again.)
11:15: The confusing thing is that you can drink tap water in germany, not like in the us where there is sometimes much chlorine in the water or the quality isn't good enough to drink it without the risk of being sick
When we were kids these "venetian blind" were handeld manuely so we played with them to make lightshow, we also found it funny to let them fall fast, much better than curtains 😁
That reaction to the automated roller shutters was hilarious. They are pretty much standard in every single house since the 80's, but on the other hand we are still using overhead projectors, so i guess it's a tie then?!
Maybe in some parts of Germany?! I’ve never had those and don’t know anyone who does. I only encountered the manual ones a few times and know some people who have them. But it’s pretty much the exception, not the norm.
3:00 I study at Augsburg University. The story of the glory holes is as follows: Students were asked what they would like to improve in the University, some guy suggested glory holes. Somehow Gloryholes got the most votes out of all the suggestions, which meant the higher ups had to make an actual proposition and take it to the head committee of the university. This Proposition included: Free condoms at the glory holes, wheel chair accessibility, adjustable height for the holes. Now every bathroom you step in you can atleast find one sticker saying „here could be your gloryhole“. Truly a wonderous time we live in…
@11:40 imagine there being public transport between continents. You know... like railways from europe to asia or airplanes from australia to south america. So futuristic that we had that stuff for over 100 years now.
No, no, you're totally right. We spend about 8% of our lives complaining about the noises our neighbors make. As an American who's lived here since the 90s it used to baffle me too, but now I totally understand it. I hate some of my neighbors just for how loud amd obnoxious they are
The point about complaints against christmas carols isnt about the noise, but the repetitiveness... Edit: about trains...It is possible throughout Europe, to travel through several countries by train...I went from Germany through Austria to Italy and viceversa without changing train several times over the years...
I really, really love George Michael (RIP 😢🖤), but whenever I hear "Last Christmas" I instantly get hemorrhoids. So I can relate to all those people who enter the next police station in order to stop that sh.t.
Those "Rolladen" Shutters mainly exist in manual variants here(At least where I live) . As in there is a cord/Belt on the side that you either pull down from the top that makes the shutters open up or let it down py pulling the Belt/Cord thing on the bottom near the Spool box towards you.
"Auf jeden Fall" even though it literally translates into "in any case" its meaning is a bit different. Its more like saying "most definitely" or a very strong "yes please!" or something like that.
at 4:43 its just a coincidence: one german magazine front being displayed side-by-side to another one, and seemingly answering a question 😅 at 5:59 some fool mounted a heater near the ceiling and air outlet😄
You can not translate "Diggah" in English because it's a word that teenagers invented. It's not a polite word. But I think the english word "dude" would fit the best. And the word is mostly used between good friends. Greetings from 🇩🇪!
Those curtains exist probably almost as long as overhead projectors. There are houses built in the 60s which have these. And "Brudi" is slang for brother. The girl with the small forehead is a politician from the far left, which became so leftist, that she became more and more far right. She is about to found her own party, because over the years her party started disagreeing with her more and more. The term "Lases" is a literal translation of "reddit" (I've read it = Ich las es). It's from a German sub reddit, where people act as though the English language needs to be burned at the stake (all in good German fun that is), so they translate everything into German. 8:10 Langeweile is boredom. 8:47 Our dog got shot twice. 10:03 Diggah is like Brudi. It's slang like bro or homy or pal or whatever.
Hi Ryan, I love your work, it is funny and it helps me to understand and speak englisch 😊 To the meme with Sahra W(agenknecht): She is a german populist who will found her own party. The other parties are afraid that they could lose votes to Sahra W. The picture shows two front pages that actually have nothing to do with each other, but when placed next to each other they look funny together.
In the Curtain Meme, the german Version are not Curtains, its Shutters which are outside the window which keep out the Light but also protect the Window from Rain or "normal" Storms in Germany. The little Dots which are visible if you dont close it fully, are for a little Light and Air to come through.
I love that you inevitably started to react to more Uyen Ninh shorts! Finally!!! I just wished you would make a whole Video just reacting to her stuff since it's super funny!!!
8:50 angeschossen means "shot" his dog was shot twice. "ange-" as pronoun basically means gotten in contact with so for example: Cars drive (fahren in germany) but hit by a car means (angefahren).
Diggah (or Digger/Digga) is a Northern German (mostly Hamburg) based term used by the craftsmen and rockers in the 1960s, just like the english "mate", "dude" or "lad", literally meaning "fatty" or "fatso". It was inserted in the german (youth)slang via Rap songs and Stree-Lifestyle. It´s common to see brands, grafitti ans stickers saying: "In Hamburg sagt man Digga!", refering to an old song with the title "In Hamburg sagt man Tschüss!". So, enough nerd stuff for today. Tschüss and react on Northern Germany more, it worth it!
Some of the words in the memes are literal translations from (american) english to german. Lases = Reddit (read it), nussen = to nut etc. If you ever encounter Elfenjunge, it's Link (like the guy from Zelda), Pfosten = Post, it's basically 4chan-heritage.
4:00 I mean imagine you had family traveling to china. If you hear on the news that germans/americans died, yould probably give them a call to see if they are alright, no?
Tap water is monitored more closely here in Germany than any foodstuff. So you can drink it anywhere without hesitation. (Provided the water pipes are not too old)
8:33 i have a pet theory, that general anxiety levels are higher in America (and they are) is partially because of regular noise pollution that nobody does anything about. Constant noise is a bigger mental health risk than most people (outside of germany) realize. on the other hand there is the idea making rounds that germans naturally come with a very mild form of autism - explaining the noise sensitivity, among other things.
There is also the fluoride in the drinking water. And lead poisoning. Both can affect the amygdala, which is partly responsible for emotion regulation.
11:00 you are confused? Try drinking tap water in the US, let's say in NYC. In Germany, any tap water is actually at least as clean and potable as any expensive bottled water. You don't need to boil tap water in Germany if you want to drink it. Taps that don't provide clean drinkable water have to be marked as "Do not drink! This water is not fit for human consumption!" Yeah, let that sink in (pun intended 😁)
War nicht die schweiz das einzige land in dem brunnen ohne "kein trinkwasser" schild immer trinkwasser sind. Dachte in deutschland müssen die mit "trinkwasser" angeschrieben sein.
funny how your translator doesn't know "angeschossen". it means having been shot, but it's non-lethal. "A little bit shot", basically. so Bob said: "our dog was already shot at twice!"
Digga is perfectly fine. There is nothing to worry about. Its like "dude". While it does have similarities with the n-word phonetically and spelling-wise. It is completely unrelated.
10:44 The toilette in McDonalds is the least disappointing thing there. Ok, before 10 am the food is much better, when you order a roll, some strawberry jelly and a coffee.
4:45 Look up Sahra Wagenknecht. TLDR: She's a prominent member of the left party (Die Linke), isn't happy with their politics in general and just founded a new party. And apparently enough people like her position for her to be able to split the vote for the left party.
Honestly, I think the thing with the water is a personal attack against ryan 😂 They successfully confused an american with that meme about how to confuse an american. And can someone explain 6:27 to me? I am german, but I have no idea what they are trying to say.
I am German and I never use these plasic curtains/ blinds. You do not need to shut them completely, but still it gets very dark in the room and when you wake up during the night, you can't see anything. It is actually terrifying.
I use them, but I never fully close them. But as children we played some games that involved the blinds being completely shut, so the room would get pitch black, even in the middle of the day.
10:34 yes, our MC's toilets are clean because everyone is peeing in the ball pit (especially the kids, but I have also seen drunk adults urinating in there too)...
As far as my understanding goes a bunch of students at the University of Augsburg requested the installation of Gloryholes (as a joke) and the request has been denied. In the meme the man is changing the Calendar date to 1984 as a reference to the famous book 1984 which is about a dystopian future ruled by a facist government. Implying that in an exaggerated way the denial of the request can be seen as tyrannical oppression of the majority.
this a translation of an artikel about that. "Gloryholes" enable anonymous sexual contact between two individuals. The "gloryhole" is a hole in a wall through which sexual partners can engage in (oral) intercourse without seeing each other. A group of students from the University of Augsburg is now requesting the installation of such facilities. The application states, verbatim: "Three gloryholes are to be built in the lecture hall center opposite the entrance, where the information boards are currently located. They should be soundproof and visually opaque, cleaned by the building management, and provide maximum accessibility, with adjustable height of the gloryholes and wall handles for support. In addition, condoms, dental dams, lubricants, as well as disinfectants and wipes should be readily available."
About the toilets, there are a couple of cases: (a) In an establishment that serves food or beverages for direct consumption. Those must be free, should be clean (i.e. are part of what the health inspector looks at), and may beg for money, even going so far as giving people the impression they need to pay for. (If a cleaning lady sits at the entrance with a tray for money and looks at you fiercely, that's this kind.) (b) Privately operated public toilets. They are operated for profit, requiring you to pay and have a strong incentive to be clean. (c) Public toilets. Non-profit, can charge you, and their cleanliness depends on the operator. Cleanliness usually is bad if they're free. If they're paid, it's a coin toss. (d) What Tank&Rast (big rest stop operator) does. Not exactly legal now that the voucher you get is worth less than what you pay, but nobody cares.
You can power the shutter mechanism with your own force or install a motor that is turning it for you (the mechanism is simple: the shutter is rolled on a stick that turns when somebody powers it)
The thing with the blinds: not all are automatic. Some you have to lower manually. We call them Rollladen. You most likely won't find them in schools. At least not the automatic version. So they still fit with the overhead projectors.
Actually there are studies that say, that overhead projectors might be better for learning effects than presentations on a computer with power point, etc. Also it is better to take notes per hand than to use the laptop or any other device. The way the brain is involved is different, sometimes, if things are are comfortable and there is a challenge to process the info, instead of just consuming it.
On noise complaints due to singing of christmas carols "Ihre Polizei": "Regards, Your police" The picture is actually showing a typical reception counter of a German police station.
I commented on the original curtain video with this same point as well, these things are actually pretty expensive to afford in Germany and not literally everyone has them. Also the thing with overhead projectors made me laugh, that's usually because schools just lack funding to buy anything better and have to stick with what's already there.
It's much more weird to me, that these metal curtains / blinds are so uncommon in a country that is so obsessed with home security (scratches head)
They're usually made out of plastic, at least in residential areas.
These are rarely made out of metal. And even when they are, that's less of a security feature (they're too thin to protect against anything more threatening than maybe a small tree branch falling against it, and someone willing to go through the window could easily cut them or shove them aside), and more a durability thing. Thicker metal shutters are as commonly used for closing up regular entrances in the US as they are in germany.
they are plastic curtains xD
they are and they are not. they are not for safety but its so much of a struggle to get in there that you never hear someone destroyed one and the window to get in ... at that point just breaking the door is easier, so it IS a way to make ur window safer and honestly when a burglar has the choise he probably chooses one without just because its easier@@hannessteffenhagen61

The german phrase "auf jeden Fall" could be translated to "of course", because it's an affirmation, but it means it a bit stronger. It means something along the lines of "no matter what else might be coming up, our plans are fixed".

It wasn't chlorine. The US adds fluorine to tab water. The idea is to increase the dental health of the people. And yes, apparently you get used to it. But many Americans still buy their water at the grocery store.
they add fluorine AND chlorine :) @@psibiza
@@psibiza
Very strange.
Dude, this is normal in Europe.

And there are borders, but since Europe has the Schengen-Agreement these are open without visum for European nationals. Because Google sucks at translating in some cases, the meaning depends on the context, here are some translations (if context based, there are timestamps)
Brudi = Bro
Auf jeden Fall = yeah sure / yes, absolutely
3:30 Platte = board / panel
Diggah = dude / bro
6:27 Lases = reddit (redd -> read [past] = las; it = es; reddit is english so it is funny to find a "translation" to german for it and use it)
And here are some explainations:
2:55 I guess the calendar doesn't mean anything and it is just about the woman with the phone
3:34 Tisch = table; platte = board; We call the tabletop "Tischplatte" because it is the board on the table"
4:27 Sahra Wagenknecht is a german politician who had quit the party she was in to make a new one. And many people think the new party will be kinda successful. The newspaper right to it with the title "We are scared" has nothing to do with the first newspaper but these two newspapers next to each other are funny because it looks like the people are scared.
5:12 It's not about christmas carols being too loud but about christmas carols being already played in fall
9:22 There had been some issues with the conservative party (CDU/CSU) and sometimes the word is used for far-right people
11:03 The tap water quality in germany is perfect and there's the prejudice that in the USA you don't drink tap water because bottled water is better so this should be confusing
"lases" => "lass es" => "don't do it"
The calendar stands for "society regressed 40 years over night".

This is not completly true.
Like adhs blessed people are not able to shut down common noices just in the mind.
This is the reason for their concentration difficulties.
If you live at the country side, like I did in my youth,
or in a big city, which I dead after studying,
it is always like living and working while carneval, CSD or under a roller coaster.
It seems like west germany has more traditional values of old people like safetyness, calmness
and in the east police is more on the youth, rebel side of partying and destroying.

Brudi: colloquial for "Bruder" (engl. Brother) means Bro
Diggah (copied from Quora): Originally, this is a term of endearment for a little, somewhat overweight boy, used a lot in Northern German family language as “Dicker” (closest engl. eqivalent fatty; "dick" is german for thick ot fat).
@@jonson856 "Dicke Freunde/ dicke miteinander sein" comes in, too.
Some people can get pretty riled up by the suggestion that it refers to overweight ppl. Apparently it is shorthand of "Dicker Freund", meaning like "Bestie", very good friend. It just happens to also sound like calling someone fat, but from context the distinction usually can be gleamed.
Best explanation!
I was not aware of this, I just naturally pronounced it that way because I don't like German Rap :) also there is a really inapropriate Helmut Kohl Joke where Digger is the punchline :)

but it is normal in germany that we have no wide range of digital stuff in any school, where in japan in most schools kids have there own tablet from the schools, and no books and other stuff too carry around anymore, we life in the stone age compared too them.
one thing i must mention these tablets are school only, they must give them back when they finish school. and if they are damaged or are someway not in the same as like when they where given too them from the school, the parents of the child must pay the shool for it. and it can get very expensive because they are allways the most modern tablets that are available.
thats why parents in japan allways thought the child from the start, so that they handle stuff they not own very carefully.

8:33 i have a pet theory, that general anxiety levels are higher in America (and they are) is partially because of regular noise pollution that nobody does anything about. In Germany, any tap water is actually at least as clean and potable as any expensive bottled water. You don't need to boil tap water in Germany if you want to drink it. Taps that don't provide clean drinkable water have to be marked as "Do not drink! This water is not fit for human consumption!"

so Bob said: "our dog was already shot at twice!"
i think his translator was censoring it because voilence
@@extremchiller410 I think it was just bad at recognizing. "Langeweile" wasn't translated on the first picture, but it was on the second.
The picture quality in that meme is so bad it couldn't recognize all the letters. It even got "Hund" wrong.
3:44 Nusser are people from Austria. We use that word to, living close to the border to Austria. :)
Digga is perfectly fine. There is nothing to worry about. Its like "dude". While it does have similarities with the n-word phonetically and spelling-wise. It is completely unrelated.
Digga please
10:44 The toilette in McDonalds is the least disappointing thing there. Ok, before 10 am the food is much better, when you order a roll, some strawberry jelly and a coffee.
4:45 Look up Sahra Wagenknecht. TLDR: She's a prominent member of the left party (Die Linke), isn't happy with their politics in general and just founded a new party. And apparently enough people like her position for her to be able to split the vote for the left party.
A very short American joke:
"Our drinking water is safe", said the mayor from Flint/Michigan!!!
Honestly, I think the thing with the water is a personal attack against ryan 😂 They successfully confused an american with that meme about how to confuse an american.
And can someone explain 6:27 to me? I am german, but I have no idea what they are trying to say.
i think the last meame just refferes to the fact that in lot of the places in the usa u should not drink the tab water
I am German and I never use these plasic curtains/ blinds. You do not need to shut them completely, but still it gets very dark in the room and when you wake up during the night, you can't see anything. It is actually terrifying.
Don't you mean "don't have to shut them completely"? must not = forbidden
darkness is not terrifying, it is just the absence of light.☝🤓
@@henner7371 It is not the darkness that is terrifying, but the fact that you open your eyes and it is still pitch black. ;-)
@@henner7371Light = information. Darkness is not terrifying, not seeing what's in the darkness is.
I am early today
Diggi is just a word like Bro not a name
The one in the second Spongebob that didn’t translate was like: The dog got already shot twice 😂😂❤
I didn't get the Sex-Löcher (sex-holes) joke either, even though I'm german..
Also the Nut-November.
Can sb. explain.
No nut November - people trying to get through the month without mast*rbating
Ok... which book was that? I've never heard of it.
1984 ;)@@Sparrow-ye5cs
With platte isn’t record meant it is meant a plate made of glass where you can put everything on.
0:51 Brudi means bro in german
we need those "window darkeners" FOR those overhead projectors!!!
thats why we came up with those :D
08:21 To be fair, cities are noisy because of cars.
Yes! Overhead projectors 😂 AND automatic outside blinds😂😅
11:47 i live in Germany and take the train daily to Denmark to get to my school
Price label by the Limon is a digital Display and connected with WIFI, so the Clark with the Password had some fun 😂
I think scoville is a great unit, because it's the needed amount of water drops you need to neutrlize one 1 drop of the hot stuff.
drinking tap water from a glass is one of the most german things ever
About the toilets, there are a couple of cases:
(a) In an establishment that serves food or beverages for direct consumption. Those must be free, should be clean (i.e. are part of what the health inspector looks at), and may beg for money, even going so far as giving people the impression they need to pay for. (If a cleaning lady sits at the entrance with a tray for money and looks at you fiercely, that's this kind.)
(b) Privately operated public toilets.
The air extracting thing is a vent that blews the air out
"I need to find a cow to push over today, I'm getting bored."
The German part of my brain: Kuhschubser
(Directly translates to "Cow pusher")
Good comparison with the overhead projector and the curtains 😀
i love it when you read german ryan you always made my day thank you xD
@04:52 Yep, that's us...
grocery store labels are not printed out btw. they are digital (e-ink, just like the amazon kindle)
0:44 "Brudi" means in that context "Bro"
The label over the limes wasn't printed, it's "electronic paper". A programmable display basically.
On noise complaints due to singing of christmas carols
"Ihre Polizei": "Regards, Your police"
The picture is actually showing a typical reception counter of a German police station.
I commented on the original curtain video with this same point as well, these things are actually pretty expensive to afford in Germany and not literally everyone has them.
Also the thing with overhead projectors made me laugh, that's usually because schools just lack funding to buy anything better and have to stick with what's already there.
People don't usually own their own house or appartement. They rent. These shutters are not everywhere, but I'd say it's definitely over 50%.
In my experience almost every house or apartment has these shutters but only a few are automatic. We still have to operate ours by hand.
