It is my understanding that the hollow in the piston holds some ink to be used when the feed tube enters it. The ink around the piston may add to that, but it is the pocket in the piston that they market as the reserve. In either case Aurora piston pens with this reserve ink feature are very hard to clean especially if you want to change ink colors. Aurora marks the nib size on the underside of the feed. If you separate them the only way to identify them is to measure them.
I think its because the engraving is done on a curved surface. The slash seems to be the center point of focus for the engraving machine and so the digits closest to it are closer to each other compared to the digits farthest to the slash.
Came back to revisit the 88 demonstrator review with the impending launch of the Cioccolato. Not sure how different the 88 is from a couple years ago, but how do you feel about the Trilobiti series at $895.50?
Fiat and Aurora are both based in Turin, I wonder if there's a coincidence there. Aurora actually made some pens for Fiat's corporate division at one point.
Really,is that common to Aurora then as I do not know of any other manufacturer that has to identify a feed with the letter F. I just thought as you were looking for an F on the nib to denote Fine it might have been the F on the feed. My apologies for bothering you.
Actually I have a demonstrator black edition from Aurora that has an M on the same spot, so I guess that F stands for fine, and mine stands for medium, which I bought.
Figboot on Pens it's located very weirdly and not visible if not under bright light, but it's the only nib marking I saw with this pen so I assumed it to be the sizing. That is not a intuitive place for the nib mark to say the least, by the way a very high quality review, as always. Thanks for the answer
Thank you for another consistent review. My gal and I are regulars now and slowly we are becoming more familiar with the finer details of the pens, nibs and manufacturers. In January we are surely going to the Philadelphia pen show. Oh -- we saw that F too -- but it did seem wide and M ish.
That clip is the ugliest thing I've ever seen on a fountain pen. It's awful. While Pilot makes their ball to look attached to the rest of the clip as a separate piece, this just looks like a poor casting job.

Aurora 1919? Guess I should start saving up for what ever 100th year limited pen they come up with in 2019.
That FP mine idea sounds funny. Never would have come up with that.
Thank you, David. I agree with your kern burn.

there is F marked on the feed for fine if you look carefully at the picture you provide in the review at 9:49

Wait, what? $700 for fucking plastic? Are you kidding me? Those green portions better be made of emerald.
Please what is the difference between the demonstratir 88 and the Minerali for the former to command a higher price. Many thanks.
Aurora have the size of the nib on the feed. The F you see at 9.50 is the marking. But for Aurora it is the thickest fine line I have seen.

I think they both hired the same graphic designer...
Diamine Apple Glory is a bit too light for my taste. I prefer MontBlanc Irish green or Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine.
Of the darker greens, Irish Green is my favorite.

jeff walton, you will be happy to know that my Aurora 88 has a letter M on the feed and yes, it is a medium 14 k nib
You are right. Cheers.
The ebonite feed you show has the letter F on it.
jeff walton that stands for "feed" 😊

LeFatalpotato to be honest, I never noticed that marking.

Thanks for watching!
Great review. I love everything about this pen, except the high price. If it was more reasonably priced, it would go on my list for sure.
Excellent Doug Loves Movies appearance. Solid name choice
James Summerlin lol. Didn't realize I was sitting right next to the crowd mic. Fun show. I have been to three tapings.
Great review!

No original mineral incrusted?! Pfft
That packaging though..
LMAO. Dude, show me where the Urushi Lacquer mine is, I'll mine all day and have those Namikis and Pilots chip out of the ground.
