A couple of months ago both harris pilton and dale at gatefold 33 did videos on this subject I must apologise for not mentioning them at the beginning of this video
Hi Rob, I love Ian Dury but tend to agree as New Boots is the only one I really play. I do like AA’s Dirk, so I would need two AA’s. I tend to be a completist (and I really annoy myself!), so I find this thread quite hard. Orange Juice was a great choice. Don’t know Two Door, they sound really interesting. Thinking about it, I think Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill and Radiohead’s The Bends would be two I guess I would include. Good thought provoker this one. Mike
Hi mike I was close to showing the bends though I think I’m just going through a can’t stand Radiohead phase 😃. When you’ve so many records sometimes only the best will do hence I always choose new boots and panties😃! This was a challenging video to put together as I’d a few awkward choices to make. But I’m happy with my choices .. as I said some people are complete on some my choices .. but it’s just my opinion thanks for watching mike 👍
Hi Rob. Nice seeing you posting videos more frequently ... That's definitely Ian Dury's best album, although there are great tracks spread across later albums ... I have a soft spot for Adam Ant. I even liked his acting! He guested in an episode of 'Northern Exposure', which I loved ... Rob Ison picked 'Lexicon Of Love' in his top 10 most played records ... I was playing Soft Cell's debut recently. It gets better and better over time.
Hi Carl. Yeah I’m attempting to do more videos thanks for being positive about that. I did watch your record you play the most video sorry I didn’t leave a comment. I recently picked up a green cool for cats album cover I’m happy about that. Thanks for watching 👍
@@robwalkerletthemusicplay I prefer videos to watching live streams ... I'm struggling to keep up with videos posted by others. There are a lot of videos on Top 10 most listened to records. I can't believe some people are taking it so seriously! Just show 10 records by bands/artists you really love. I followed your approach and included a recent release ... Congrats on finding a green 'Cool For Cats'! If you're patient, the records you want always seem to turn up one day.
Hi Rob. My favourite ABC track is 'SOS, which is from 'Beauty Stab'. I was never into Adam and the Ants and didn't have any of their records, but then a friend of mine a while back gave me his entire record collection, so I ended up with all the Adam and the Ants LPs. Haven't played them yet though. You showed a few here which I also only have one buy (Ian Dury, Orange Juice, Soft Cell, The Crossing ). Cheers, James
Hi James I agree sos is a great song I do have a greatest hits of abc which I like. back in the early 80s I always though abc were decent even though they weren’t the coolest band my twin sister had lexicon of love so I heard it through the bedroom wall many times . Never went past kings of the wild frontier it just takes me back to a more innocent time .. thanks for watching and commenting james 👍
I love this idea, Rob. Ironically, my favorite all-time album, Quadrophenia, is the only album I need by The Who. Used to love Tommy and Who's Next as a youngster, but haven't had those albums in my collection now for many years. (I've probably already told you all this, and if so, sorry.....I find that I have little left to say about anything these days, haha!) Enjoyed the video, Rob. Jeff
Fantastic video Rob; I love all these albums you shown; I will say the first Adam & The Ants album is probably my favourite out of the three Ants albums as they started out Post Punk; but ‘Kings Of The Wild Frontier’ is still a great album definitely 😀👍 Alt-J’s debut is absolutely amazing and they haven’t topped it ever since; I was pretty disappointed in their last album unfortunately; but they are a great band and they were tremendous live when I saw them at the Sage in 2018! Orange Juice’s debut is glorious Jangle Pop; a short lived band that delivered some awesome albums indeed and this is my favourite of theirs 🐬🍊 Big Country’s ‘The Crossing’ is absolutely incredible; need to listen to it again soon as I haven’t heard it in a while; the Icicle Works are pretty underrated IMO; love this debut of theirs. Keep up the great videos Rob; hope to see a haul video from you soon 😊👍
Hi Sam it’s funny with alt j because I love the debut so much and live they were great .I soon lost interest in Adam and the ants but in 81 they were the kings ! Big country in 83 spent a fair bit of time in the chart but there subsequent albums felt a bit flat to me. Thanks for watching I’ve not done a vinyl update in 2023. Maybe it’s time 👍
I only have the Ian Dury and Big Country albums. Thanks for the heads up on the best of the other artists you showed. Lots of debut records there, lots of other bands never find their songwriting groove after their first album. Cheers Rob.
Some fine choices there Rob. I always play that Ian Dury record as well. Such a great lyricist and the band is so tight. I enjoyed the movie about his life a few years ago. Orange Juice album great as well but the only one I own by them. Edwyn Collins' autobiography is well worth a read. Very moving. Hope all is well with you. Cheers, Steve
Hi Steve. Great to hear from you . How’s things looking for Swindon this season I know you have Michael Flynn .. this was a fun challenge thanks for watching 👍
Hi .. I used to like steeltown by big country in the 80s but I don’t even own it anymore I quite liked where the rose is down and just a shadow. But I can manage without it now. Thanks for watching
@@robwalkerletthemusicplay I intend to pick up that Tame Impala record that you showed on another video. I saw the cover everywhere and decided to stream it, sounds good so it will be mine soon!. Cheers
By and large I agree with you Rob - Icicle Works definitely fits into the “their first was their best” category. Wonderful album. I am a big OJ fan and love their debut but Rip It Up is a great album, they are not the same band on the 2nd album with the addition of Zeke Manyika to the band. One album I would add to the list is The Hurting…Tears For Fears. Interesting topic.
Hi Brett yes rip it up is ok and it’s not easy to find on vinyl these days I just prefer the debut .. I like tears for fears but I know that a lot of people favour the hurting .. thanks for watching 👍
I would be ok with just “Hawaii” by the High Llamas, though they have other good albums. Thanks, Rob. Some records you showed that I need to check out.
Big Country i feel like a Best Of would work best for me cause I love Look Away. I picked up that Icicle Works maybe 2-3 yrs ago. It didn’t live up to Birds Fly for me. I think after that album the one song I liked they released was Understanding Jane. Cool topic.
Hi Steve .. it was an interesting video idea .. I have understanding Jane on a 7 inch as I said in the video the icicle works just couldn’t follow up to love is a wonderful colour .. I much prefered Stuart adamsons first band the skids but now and again I don’t mind listening to the crossing .. thanks for watching Steve. Have a great weekend 👍
I am far too young to know most of the other LP’s but I totally agree with the ABC choice. I heard it being played as I wandered through the Co-op store in Woolwich many years ago. I hung around to hear a few tracks and bought it immediately. A great album!
Rob I agree with you on Adam Ant, but to me its Dirk Wears White Socks that is the only one I need. You need at least 3 Ian Dury's imho. Orange Juice, I also need the 7" of Blue Boy. What about The Stone Roses? The first is absolutely stellar and Second Coming was so disappointing. They thought they were Led Zep or something on that one 😂Cheers...Ben

Adam and the Ants was big hit in the States. Goodie Two Shoes was the single I believe. Friend or Foe was the album. I think. Enjoyed the video as usual.
Once again, introducing me to bands I am not familiar with (Orange Juice, Two Dollar Cinema Club, The Twang) that really sound interesting. I own 'New Boots & Panties' and have come to love 'I'm Partial to Your Abracadabra'. As a side note, if you ever happen to watch the 'Behind the Music' on the making of Steely Dan's 'Aja' album, Ian Dury is a featured contributor to the show.
Some absolute bangers there Rob I love almost all of those albums. And yes If push came to shove I’d make the same choices for the artists you showed. I have got all ABC’s albums though, and The Lexicon of Love is one of the best albums of the 80s in my opinion. Take care cheers
I watched Mazzy's take on the only album I need by an artist, so now I will get yours." Do it Yourself" instead for me as far as Ian Dury is concerned..
Some interesting choices there, Rob. I must confess I only have the Ian Dury album- but I'm an old fogey 🤣If I did an entry, 'Electric Warrior' by T. Rex would be bound to be on there. I'm off to Japan in a few days so may post up something worthwhile next month. Who knows...
Ah I see where you are going with this. So not one you need to complete the set but just one album that says that'll do me. I'll be honest with you I'm not sure I could find one. If I like an artist the generally I will buy everything or if not then a best of. Some good shouts from you though, even if I do feel you are missing out with Adam and the Ants, Little bit of trivia for you. Agree with The Crossing but the second ABC has aged well , like fine wine 🍷. Beauty Stab is very underrated. The only OMD I have is Organization & Japan is Tin Drum. Love both ..no interest in the rest ..good singles like Souvenir & Life In Tokyo but underwhelming albums to accompany. ✌️
Organization is also my go-to album from OMD, I also consider the Human League's Dare album as one the most brilliant reocrd from the early 80's synth pop era
