This knowledge is invaluable for me as a musician. I learned it some what 25 years ago,and I still use it in my everyday music compositions. So teach yourself this, and you won't need to worry about getting your chords right.
Wow, killer lesson! One of the best I've ever seen. My skill level just went up by a lot. I'll be toying with this for a long time, and really, finally get my inversions as well as relative minors and their inversions- in every key by following the circle of fifths! Amazing.
People thought that I was crazy for doing this on every instrument I know, mallets, clarinet, alto and tenor sax, baritone, trombone. Actually helpful. I find that I can improv for hours.
Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge. I am fascinated by the dexterity of your fingers. It is beautiful to watch. I will practice your exercises using the Circle of Fifths. I hope you will provide more lessons. You are a wonderful teacher.
Great demo. It would be good also to refer to the scaletones. Root, major third, perfect fifth etc. That will help ingrain that information along with the note names.
Thanks so much! I'm a guitar player who dabbles with my keyboard a little.... you explain it to where I really want to play A LOT! :O Dream Theater is one of my favorite bands in the world and you've added so much over the years. Thanks for doing what you do!
I hate that when he's playing a simple C Chord it sounds better than any song I've ever made in my life. Absolutely genius piano player, Jordan Rudess is.
Hey there Bill. Are you signing up through Pyramind Online? That's where we have the entire series of instructional videos from Jordan Rudess. Let me know if you have further problems and I'll be glad to walk you through and troubleshoot. Thanks for the kind words. -Tim.
I don't believe Jordan teaches online simply because of his schedule with Dream Theater and his continuous work with Apple. We, on the other hand do have a piano class that we teach at our ground campus in S.F.
circle of fifths is quite important to guitar; Paul Gilbert stresses it a lot in his lessons in order to write great tunes and solos. Joe Satriani even adapted the circle of fourths and fifths in his Pitch Axis theory.
Hey there, To view it your going to need to sign up at Pyramind Online and create an account. Its free to sign up and you will have 100's of hours of content we've created. Enjoy.
I really would like to find part 2of this video. I've been trying to learn to play by ear for the longest while but to no avail. If someone knows some good resourses please share with me?
Greetings Jordan! I came across your videos and I must say that you are amongst the most talented keyboardists and composers I've ever encountered. Thank you for posting the videos on RUclips; it let's us know "what" is possible. By the way, I've tried to sign up to your website and it won't let me. It keeps saying that the username/ password doesn't match. I've done it for multiple emails. I REALLY want to check out your site. See if it's a glitch you can fix. I NEED to see all of your stuff!!!
I know you're not going to like this but I highly suggest learning to read notes and, subsequently the music. It will open unimaginable horizons for you by being able to play and comprehend sound combinations you would've never come across if playing only by ear. Otherwise, you will always be limited to only certain chord progressions and steps your brain can perceive as likable. Imagine making movie with still picture camera - that's what playing by ear can be compared to.
My piano teacher gets all mad when I use different fingerings and I see Jordan (one of the best in the world) with like a totally different fingering. Is there really a correct fingering for that first C chord he played?
All music theory applies to all instruments, as you'll see if you take the time and make the effort to learn the theory, and trust me, it's well worth it.
check out the pyramind website, that's where this whole series can be found. also, you can check out the Jordan Rudess Online Conservatory. jroc . us lots of great ear training there and if you have an iOS device, Ear Wizard is coming out soon from his company wizdom music. or maybe it's ear wiz, i can't remember haha but yeah, check some of that out. also musictheory . net has great ear training exercises
You know, I kind of find comments like these annoying, but I feel as if it's necessary on this one. WHY do people dislike videos of when people are trying to help you be a better player over all and you're learning from one of the best keyboardists in the world and you're just disliking the video. It's so disrespectful to the person it's not even funny. Even if you don't like him you shouldn't dislike something that people find helpful.

Never seen it done like this before, and it immediately opened up my playing as if it were a whole new instrument.
jordan rudess is just impossible... u just playing this C chord itself is so amazing...luv it
Awesome advice! you're never too old to learn, this man's skill is unbelievable!
Thank You. My eyes have been opened to a new dimension in chord changes and practice.
LOL starts out easy till "if you're a little more advanced give it a run"
Wow, killer lesson! One of the best I've ever seen. My skill level just went up by a lot. I'll be toying with this for a long time, and really, finally get my inversions as well as relative minors and their inversions- in every key by following the circle of fifths! Amazing.
ha ha. yes, this is so wonderful
i guess that if anyone watched this
over and over, they could be brilliant
just like jordan rudess. thanks man.
Jordan Rudess really needs to make more musical writing instructional videos. The mans a genius
I'm a guitar player, so many things do not apply for me here, but when Jordan Rudess makes an instructional video, YOU WATCH IT.
Now I will excel even more further with keyboarding. Thanks Jordan.

I don't even play the keyboard, but I was still captivated enough to watch the whole thing.
Easy, and understandable!!! Helpful for me to understand the "complicated" theory and can practice at home! :) Thanks!
Great demo. It would be good also to refer to the scaletones. Root, major third, perfect fifth etc. That will help ingrain that information along with the note names.
Terrific lesson, Jordan!
I love this man... a great musician
Cool video. It is nice that profession helps you to get better on playing!
This exercise is so wonderful and easy.....thanks for making it simple
Thank you so much Sir, very inspiring ideas. I believe it help me to learn this basic idea. Im beginner shifting instrument to keyboard.
Thanks so much! I'm a guitar player who dabbles with my keyboard a little.... you explain it to where I really want to play A LOT! :O Dream Theater is one of my favorite bands in the world and you've added so much over the years. Thanks for doing what you do!
Im not even a pianist, still love watching this
Man that was of great help! great teacher indeed!
I'm not a pianist - and I think sometimes Jordan Rudess has the tendancy to over do it, but I actually found that VERY useful!
Great lesson ! Thank you so much !!!
I hate that when he's playing a simple C Chord it sounds better than any song I've ever made in my life. Absolutely genius piano player, Jordan Rudess is.

i love the principle of practice that he's teaching...
@FeatherGlow1 Yes! There are 8 parts. Check them out the pyramind online link below the video.
Excellent! Jordan makes me wish I stuck with piano going into H.S.
I don't believe Jordan teaches online simply because of his schedule with Dream Theater and his continuous work with Apple. We, on the other hand do have a piano class that we teach at our ground campus in S.F.
Wow, he's a sick teacher! Thanks!!
Your my #1 keyboardist...
circle of fifths is quite important to guitar; Paul Gilbert stresses it a lot in his lessons in order to write great tunes and solos. Joe Satriani even adapted the circle of fourths and fifths in his Pitch Axis theory.
Very useful info!!!! Thank. How do you get so fluid in playing?

JR How do you take something so simple and make it just completely AMAZING!?
Thank u for this lesson... 😊😊
C=Do,B=Si. You can go from there.
Do, Re mi, is Italian, C,D,E is German notation.
Great video! Thank you!
Once John Petrucci found a magic lamp...he rubbed it and POP!! Out came RUDESS!! :D

this lesson is present in Rudess' "keyboard wizardry".
I saw that accidental you slipped in there at 6:25. Just couldnt resist
so cool, thax
Great video thanks
I cry watching this
Virtuoso is the word for him
You can check out Pyramind Online. We have tons of instructional video content regarding Music Production, Synthesis, DAW's, Mixing, Piano, etc.
where can I find the other videos they got deleted ?
Hi, where can we get all of the parts of this lessons? They are not available in our web site.
Awesome
thanks!
He he, the arpeggios are cool. That's what I wanted to learn for the last 20 years, but somehow I could never get the fingering right.
really useful-my fingers refuse to go that fast though!
Hey no fair! You're using passing tones! Hehe.
If this is Part 1, is there a Part 2?
do you give online lessons, i think i need to start over again
It's the M-Audio Keystation 88 Pro, I think, it's a controller.

@SparkShredder you're wrong... it was the Genie... Mangini...
he's like the coolest music nerd ever (im a music nerd)
did anybody figure out the riff at 0:28 ?
All music theory applies to all instruments, as you'll see if you take the time and make the effort to learn the theory, and trust me, it's well worth it.
thank you !!!!!
@synadude What keyboard is that?
sounds like broken hallelujah - the song when fiona is sad that she's not marrying shrek and is marrying lord farquad
what model of a Yamaha keyboard is Jordan playing? Thanks.
Instructive :)
very nice
2:11 Oh, chord inversions... Okay, let's take some notes *grabs notepad
hey Jordan...is it an accident that you played B Flat at 6.25......?
watching his fingers then he does his runs is cool. dont know why
@himl994 good fingering only matters if it affects your playing.. if you can pull it off with ease.. then use whatever fingering you WANT...
I'm a guitarplayer, and I'll try to bring this to the fretboard. This sound way to cool, to not try it!
actually, the inversions and the changing of keys with the relative major/minor is the exact same thing on the guitar than on the piano :P
Well, everything he said on this particular video applies to the guitar. You only need to adapt it to the fretboard, the notes are there.
There are inversions of chords on guitar. So everything here applies, just not on the same instrument.
whats his keyboard?
"A little bit more advanced" LOL
only slightly
Haws anyone notised that vivaldi is just jordan rudess with a wig? therefore Jordan rudess invented the cycle of fiths.
i think you underestimate playing by ear a bit. i do both and i think that both have advantages over the other. ear is my preferred way to play though
check out the pyramind website, that's where this whole series can be found. also, you can check out the Jordan Rudess Online Conservatory. jroc . us

The Most Amazing facet of the Piano is, It needs no Explanation! No Lyrics! Just to be listen & heard too!
Unless you start asking yourself at what pitch are the keys pitched and why at that pitch exactly... Then good luck with your temper ;)
I was thinking the same thing LOL
Video on circle of fifths.... explains nothing on circle of fifths🤔
Its because they're badass mayn

*de wey intensifies*
2:11 Oh, chord inversions... that's interesting, better take some notes *grabs notepad*
Einstein explains simple addition.
