Fun fact: When Joakim originally joined the band, he was going to be a keyboard player. He became a singer "temporarily" since they needed one. However that ended up being his final role in the band. So yes, he is in fact pretty skilled at playing the piano, since that's what he was originally going to join the band to do.

There are a couple of other songs in the States that are similar to this one:
    1) Belleau Wood by Garth Brooks
    2) Snoopy and the Red Baron (based on the comic book series by Charles Schultz)
Both songs are excellent Christmas songs, as this one is. It is a lesson of history we should never forget, that even in the darkest of times, whether in the air (see: No Bullets Fly by Sabaton), or in the trenches, that as long as even one person holds onto hope, then the darkness can never overtake the light. That even in the most hellish of warzones, all it takes is one soldier to put down his rifle on Christmas and say, "Today....today is Christmas. Today I am not fighting. Today, shall be a day of peace."
    Lest we forget.
And to all those who read this, no matter where you are or what you believe, I very joyfully wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! Cheers from America!
Edit: Viking, you were referring to the infantryman, who is the backbone of every army. But here's the thing: In 1914, one German commander had to move his men to a different section of the line, because his men had made friends with men across "no man's land," and after Christmas, refused to fire at them.
Additionally, the video is shot in the Czech Republic, as Joakim is half-Czech. The battlefield itself is outside of a town in Belgium called Ypres, and the cross erected on 1914 still stands to this day.

The Christmas Truce actually lasted well into the new year in some theatres. Part of the reason why high command so adamantly struck down the idea of allowing this to happen again was the fact that most battle fields actually saw a stark decrease in morale after the Christmas Truce. The soldiers on both sides would deliberately miss shots because they didn't want to kill their new friends. Many battalions had to be switched around to get the fighting going again.
The next year, officers would order their own soldiers shot if they tried to initiate another truce on Christmas and stated that any soldiers who participated in such a truce would be court martialed.
It became something of a rallying call for anti-war protesters.

One of the greatest examples of the humanity of warriors to their enemies, who they realize are the same as them regardless of their differences in ideology. This song makes you sad, happy, and proud all at the same time. Joakim and Par started writing this in 2016 but wanted it perfect so they continued developing it until 2020. I think they succeeded. And at the end, the voice of the Valkyrie serenading the dead in Valhalla. Great reaction, Merry Christmas, and keep rocking. And please remember the brave people and soldiers of Ukraine in your thoughts and prayers this holiday season.

From a time when actual real warriors still existed. That never happens these days. We only accept our brainwashed, overly-trained, un-thinking, un-feeling robot soldiers that we have made now.
These days, our enlisted people (and even officers) are no longer 'people', they are simply numbers. They are NOT ALLOWED to think for themselves and have to ASK PERMISSION to wipe their own asses. They cannot be real warriors under those conditions.
I was military for a short time and from my aged point of view looking back, I was stupid ('stupid' being defined as 'I should have known better, but I did it anyway'). I may have been intelligent in some ways but I was blind in far too many others. If I knew half of what the people at the top knew at the time, I would never have put myself under any of their thumbs.

The generals actually issued edicts that it would not happen again under penalty of death. As with any war, what you said is correct, the regular soldier has no interest in the result, only the leaders. WWI was the most unnecessary war in history. It was a war of treaties and one people's hatred of another, far away from where much of the war was fought. Seven cousins, all grandchildren of Queen Victoria of England, fighting against each other. I would have loved if she had still been around, if she took them each by the ear and sat them down to talk it out. Yeah, wonder how they got Floor to sing the ending ... There were several truces, all along the line and yes, in some places people brought music instruments to play with each other. One place had a German Juggler, impromptu soccer matches happened here and there. In one place a German barber cut the hair of soldiers from both sides. Other places were more solemn where they helped each other bury their dead. In one famous place, the Germans were stationed near a brewery and brought beer to the British and got plum pudding in response.
Were they able to keep fighting is a good question, because in some places the truce lasted weeks. A british officer complained that unarmed Germans wouldn't climb down from their parapet: "We can't shoot them in cold blood. We have no idea how to get them bacl to business. Command on both sides hated the fraternization and ordered bombing from further behind the lines to get people back to fighting. By next year, command made sure to rotate troops before christmas, to make sure that no communication over the lines and establishment of trust could happen before Christmas Eve. In 1914, communication had happened for two months before the truce, soldiers screaming soccer results and playing music to each other in the evenings.

So glad to have you back Viking, Allen Infinity or Allen Nightwish Army here, you were always one of my favorites. Skol! Yep this was sad in the sense that they went back to killing, but also a monument to humans are humans even in war sometimes.

To think of how real this video is amazing!! There is so much good that can happen if we just stop and look thru eyes of love. If you want to follow the history of Sabatons songs, all are on their site! They are all based on real events! A very very blessed thanksgiving to you and family and friends. You are such a very special man who sees thru your heart and isn’t afraid to share with all of us! ❤

It's been a while, but great to have you back! One of my favourite Christmas songs. With the insane production standards of the video equalling that of any Hollywood blockbuster (especially the lighting), they add to the power of this performance.
Sabaton are to be credited for reminding us of our mistakes. So much of our history is either being cancelled or re-written, increasing the chances of us repeating previous mistakes. You can learn more from a Sabaton video (or their own history channel) than from a history lesson in school.
Sabaton's videos create curiosity as to what went before, and you learn so much more from researching history yourself. Regarding this truce, I suspect that most of the soldiers aim was off the following day, and many missed their targets on purpose. I'm glad you watched to the end, and were rewarded with the lovely wee Easter egg of Floor's beautiful vocals.
    Almost forgot....Merry Christmas!
PS I love Chaplin's speech from 'The Great Dictator' at then end. Very apt, especially with the situation we are in today, and very powerful. A great performance from Chaplin, showing he was a talented serious actor, as well as a comic.

I completely agree with you by watching also the credits. Not only this video and this band but all other artists. The people behind the scenes deserve that. They're so important for them and put so much effort in all they do!
The music during the credits is composed by Antti Martikainen, a Finnish composer and producer, who makes mostly epic sounttrack music. My favorite is "Lords of Iron" (Celtic Metal). ruclips.net/video/U5u9glfqDsc/видео.html Perhaps one day you're able to react to it. Groetjes!
Btw. 3 weeks ago Sabaton posted a short video "The Making of" (Christmas Truce) ruclips.net/video/Ytbalf9tfNY/видео.html
And last summer, during a festival in Switzerland, they suddenly got more stage time. They decided to perform Christmas Truce. But as this song wasn't on their setlist they didn't bring a piano with them. So they went into Zürich to search one. They made a video of it. And as sadness and happiness are close together this one is a hilarious one ruclips.net/video/4RjlnqMT1Xk/видео.html Enjoy!

Joakim was originally planning to be the keyboard player in the band and very relucantly became the lead vocal in addition!. He does the keyboard in the studio except between 2005 and 2012. They recruited Daniel Myhr to relieve him of that duty in 2005, Myhr was one of the four (of 6!) that left the band in 2012, he was one of the three of these then helped form Civil War, a band that makes songs about the US Civil War and still exists to this day. I guess that when Sabaton was reformed they decided it was OK to track the keyboards, similar to how a some bands don't have a bass player, one of the guitar players plays the bass in the studio and it's then tracked when live. If you've found a working band chemistry you don't want to upset it, especially if you tour a lot like most successful modern bands (and Sabaton has a heavy touring schedule).
And yes, the powers on both sides were REALLY scared of this repeating the next year(s) and possibly affecting the war, both sides made sure a large scale repeat of this was impossible (IIRC in at least some cases declaring that the zone in-between would be hit by artillery fire at random times to make it suicide to try, and the artillery was further back so wouldn't know).

Sabaton videos always end with me on the internet for the next four hours reading about history. A subject I failed twice and finally passed with a d in college. So that’s saying something. To be able to teach history unbiased through music is a category all of its own. And I’m always so grateful with their videos because I do have a hard time catching the words in a live performance. Have they ever done any videos about the Indian wars in the USA?? I’d like to see their take on that. I know they’re from europe so prob not. Edit. Thanks for the Charlie Chaplin clip at the end that was quite the speech, and still relevant 80 years later. We really haven’t learned anything have we 😢

Hi. Glad to see you are starting with music like this. I always loved this. I see you went on to the American Acapella bands after this (love the basses all 3 of them) I am a bit eclectic in my music because I also am fond of The Warning (closer Sabaton), Avi Kaplan in his solo career, Larkin Poe, Tim Minchin, Hozier;usually all singer-songwriters.

I'm not sure, but I've heard that the higher-ups had to reassign the units to different places on the front so that they were not across from a unit that they had celebrated Christmas with.

    • @572Btriode
      @572Btriode Год назад +1

Is correct, many units were subsequently mixed and re-assigned to other places on the front, even so some soldiers wilfully aimed off target and some refused to fight any more and many mentally destroyed by the images and shell-shock. Sadly some of these were field executed for cowardice in the face of the enemy.

In some places along the line it lasted a few months.
Various soldiers tried again the next year but we're imprisoned or out right shot.
WW1 was not about madmen or lands but was actually the last war of aristocracy.
Neither side was evil in the beginning they were just how Europe has been for a millennium.
The stupidest move made was when the Kaiser started torpedoing and sinking civilian shipping again after being warned.
The second but the most costly mistake he made was making a treaty with mexico that after the war they could have part of the United States as spoils of war.
Not the wisest thing to do.

Eh, I don't find footmen offensive. I was a scout in the Army. Grunt is more common, but I like footman. (I can't really claim it since I was a dragoon. Means we'd ride in on vehicles then dismount to fight. Then we're footmen while our Ubers become stationary forts).
When in doubt, just say "they weren't REMFs." That's what front line calls anyone not there, including higher officers. Means "Rear Echelon Mother F'ers".
