@@larrygill2223 this was a huge gamble that paid off. If the meathead had kicked Tony's ass, yeah the meathead probably gets wacked but now Tony looks like even more weak
Tony looked out upon his people. He saw that they were disheveled, inattentive, and dare I say it disorganized. His people were in need, of him. Tony gave only what was needed by his people.
In this scene right here. Tony was insecure of himself after getting shot, thinking that the rest of the crew perceived him as weaker than he used to be. So he picked a fight with the toughest guy in the room to prove a point.
This is one of my all time favorite scenes in the show. Tony is a big ''boss'' guy but is insecure about people who maybe stronger or better looking than him especially as he ages. Tony acts like a kid a lot of the time despite being an important business man which is what makes his character interesting.
It wasn't insecurity in this particular scene though. Tony had just gotten out of the hospital and saw everyone was just lazing about instead of getting out there and earning. This beating was Tony's way of telling everyone "the boss back and play time's over, now get to work."
Jackie Aprile Sr was literally dying of cancer, and he never had to do anything like this. He didn’t have to prove anything. His ability as a confident leader simply prevailed. Really shows how flawed and insecure Tony was as a leader.
This makes 2 GREAT intense scenes with Gandolfini where there is a good oldies song playing in the background. You can feel the tension building here when he's sizing everybody up just like in True Romance when he is making small talk with Alabama right before he's about to kill her and The Shirelles Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow is playing
Hey idiot this scene was from Season 6: Part 1. The fight between Tony and Bobby was the premiere of Season 6: Part 2. And they clearly showed, if you believe in directing and purposeful writing that Tony was going to literally kill Bobby when he had him against the wall, hands on his throat while blocking his legs. Tony was naturally violent and had the fervor to go all the way if Carmela didn't step in and practically jump on his back. That gave Bobby the necessary leverage that was seemingly impossible based on Tony's grip and anger. There was no point in showing Carmela trying to stop Tony only to suggest that she knew Tony was going to kill him if it kept up.
Has nothing to do with bobby. Bobby apparently could fight, the whole gentle giant and quiete guy thing he had going. Bobby and Tony both could fight it's just Bobby never threw his weight around. And Tony had been shot and almost died, it's hard to keep up with all Tony's injuries but I dont think he had been shot here but was recovering from something else car wreck maybe, he thought the other jackals might be smelling weakness so he picked the youngest strongest guy and dusted him off to give them 2nd thoughts about him going anywhere. It was probably all in Tony's head but that's the nature of the beast, appearances are everything.
Bobby was a mobster and a made man the guy was capable of murder at any time and has murdered and worked for the family For years he just wasn’t a angry person and those were the best monsters that lasted the longest the ones that kept business business
The real reason why tony did what he did was that he knew the kid would come back at him because the kid had a temper just like tony, plus that kid was the stronger one that you thought was supposed to protect tony, but tony kicked his ass.
This comes down to a basic sociological premise. The reason you see a lot of big, strong guys in charge isn't a coincidence or some cultural phenomenon. They are in charge because they are the most physically imposing with a dominant personality. Tony exhibits this fully. Hence the look at his own crew after he beats the guys ass. His actions also result directly from Dr. Melfi's advice to act 'as if' nothing happened, that he didn't get shot or is less feared because of his physical deficiencies. That carries over to the eerie realization that Melfi only strengthened Tony's sociopath personality, which in the end, is why she dropped him as a client. She was giving advice to him all along without knowing it.
a very risky move, but Tony needed to do something to prove that he was still a strong leader. This his how you keep yourself at the top of a hierarchy.
+ben1ben2ben1 Thanks for calling me an idiot... I'm not saying that physique is the only determining factor in fighting ability, but it's got to be a big factor. It's no coincidence that most professional fighters are in great shape and retire beyond a certain age.
I like the way that Mutt was not afraid of Tony and try to swing back at him. Or the way Tony looked at Bobby and thought "yeah he will beat my ass" and he did. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
If the kid really wanted to fight back, he would have totally wrecked Tony, fresh after the gunshot wound especially. He was in terrible shape even before he got shot. I think he made a split second decision when he was about to fight back and the guys said "don't do it!". If he hurt Tony, that would have been the end of his short life!
This scene is brilliant. At this point, Tony's crew aren't taking him as seriously as they should and Tony knows something had to be done about it. I don't think it's as unrealistic as some people have commented, just because the guy Tony chooses to have a rumble with is muscle, doesn't mean he can fight for shit. Tony is going to be as hard as fuck, that's indisputable, surgery or not, he's the fucking boss. I can't believe I'm talking about this in such depth. Then again, it's The Sopranos.
Only thing redeeming about Tony was that he loved Animals and his daughter, that's it. Anyone who aspires to be like him aspires to be an ass. Can't stand "people" like this.
A once in a lifetime, mighty actor, up there with Brando and De Niro. Can`t believe he`s gone, thought he`d be around for a long time. Sad time. Jim and Sopranos are the reason people watch Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Thrones. He was so fucking good he made TV cool. Thanks big fella, I raise my Sambuca glass to you.
Tony picked the baddest guy he knew he could beat up... The scene right before this he sized up Bobby Bacalla (asked him weight, etc.) and knew he wouldnt stand a chance.
Exactly. When Tony enters the scene, only two people acknowledge him, just a passing hi. Nobody offered him a seat. Nothing was any different than if a dog had wandered through the room. For a boss to be a boss, your presence in a room much change how everybody acts. Chances are after this, Tony's presence in a room will change how people act.
this show is fictional. human runner is right. It doesn't matter how big you are tony in real life being 250lbs eating his ass off like he does would be slow and run out of stamina way faster than the other guy. don't get me wrong if tony hit him straight on it would probably hurt him, but no way tony soprano would actually hold his own in a real street fight.
the reason Tony did it is because he didnt want to look weak in front of his crew, he just had an operation on a gunshot wound, can't eat certain food and has a bodyguard, so to show them that he is still in control and as weak and helpless as he looks he picked a fight with the biggest guy in room and beat him to show that he is still in control and can stiĺl be as brutal as ever
+Daniel o Exactly. Amazing that it isn't Tony's position alone that earns him respect, but that he has to still exert this kind of arbitrary control over his crew. Imagine one of the older bosses, usually on heart medicine and with oxygen tubes, having to reestablish their toughness.
"Act as if...." This is such a beautiful scene; the music is perfect, too (David Chase- who was in charge of all Sopranos music- used music better than anybody in the industry, with the exception of Scorsese). Tony is surrounded by a bunch of sociopaths; this is one very animalistic primitive bunch. He very wisely anticipated his crew turning on him because they sensed weakness. Just another great example of writing and characterization; Tony is a man who CONSTANTLY fears for his life.
Uh... No, he did it to show that he was still in charge, Tony isn't one to back down from any fight... Sure, he anticipated his crew turning on him... (Maybe) But he just wanted to show them that he wasn't going soft.
Darskul maybe you're not too perceptive, but that's pretty much exactly what I said. of course, he isn't one to back down from a fight. but I was alluding to the previous scene in which he goes to Melfi for some specific advice on how to re-assert himself ("act as if," she tells him). Tony clearly has some doubts in himself, but he just slays the most physically-fit lion to show that he has control of the pride
Me and my dad we both love this show so much the sopranos it suck that this show ended in the summer of 2007 and that James died 4 years ago it's a dam shame
Eh I don’t think this necessarily proves he’s “still boss”, I think this makes him look weak/desperate/petty in front of his crew. They also may question his mental state. This was a miscalculation on Tony’s part imo. He at least he should have thought out a better reason to assert his dominance in such an aggressive and impulsive manner.
He did it because melfi put the idea in his head. To go after the biggest baddest most intimidating person, and regaining the troops respect and fear of him. Notice how no one got up to greet him with a hug/kiss. Sil never got up from his chair.
Have you guys noticed when Tony is throwing up he has his hand on the toilet bowl with the lid up??? and soon after with that same hand uses it to take a drink of water, you so nasty TONY! All the guys take dumps and whiz all over LMAO
He's smart because he knew that guy(forgot his name) would fight to make it look real.I recall earlier in the episode, the guy was about to fight someone in traffic infront of tony.He has a short temper.
Talk about a “no win” situation. The poor bastard was ready to get up and defend himself and hears “Don’t do it!!” I’m 60 and could still win any fight I start if my opponent can’t fight back.
I don't approve with Tony did but that guy was crazy to raise his hands to the boss. I mean a made guy can't hit the boss and the boss can hit the made guy but this guy wasn't even an associate let alone a made guy

"Don't do it!" That's my favorite part
Would've been hilarious is Tony won the fight by slamming his head into the fridge door
+absurdrhino Yeah... hilarious
HOWS +HA+ HUH!?!
In this scene right here. Tony was insecure of himself after getting shot, thinking that the rest of the crew perceived him as weaker than he used to be. So he picked a fight with the toughest guy in the room to prove a point.
No shit
captain obvious for the win
Eh give the chosen one a break. He finally finished with the shine box. He's tired.
Tony was a coward for this. He picked a fight with a dude he knew wouldn’t fight back.
@@Polostar79 I agree it was a weak move out of Tony, but the guy did attempt to fight back.
Respect is earned and kept by showing who is boss constantly
Tony beats up The Situation
Savage Tony 😂 slamming the refrigerator door had me dead 💀
Love this scene love this show, one o f my fave moments and so well done
+Clyde Drake Brilliant acting all round. This scene was just a masterpiece.
I didn’t get it
This is one of my all time favorite scenes in the show.
Really shows how flawed and insecure Tony was as a leader.
wasn’t he also just an interim boss for like two years by the time of his cancer? tony was in for the long haul
Everyone saying this is about Tony showing power in case they think he's weak - in reality Tony found that pesky Mallomar thief.
1:01 RIP Dante Greco, passed just before New Year’s
the look on Paulie's face is priceless when he knows something is totally off kilter. it makes this scene, I think.
I resent the fact you didn't include Bobby's almost-dunk right before this
This makes 2 GREAT intense scenes with Gandolfini where there is a good oldies song playing in the background. You can feel the tension building here when he's sizing everybody up just like in True Romance when he is making small talk with Alabama right before he's about to kill her and The Shirelles Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow is playing
love the part where tony looks at himself in the mirror after...that evil smile then pukes back
I really wish they’d done more with that refrigerator door.
Most interesting character on the show.
Bobby kicked tony's ass at the cabin. Tony was feeling ..... Less then a man. lol
Bobby was a mobster and a made man the guy was capable of murder at any time and has murdered and worked for the family
For years he just wasn’t a angry person and those were the best monsters that lasted the longest the ones that kept business business
That happened way after this scene
guyverjay I don’t think he did, he put in some violent collections work though
The real reason why tony did what he did was that he knew the kid would come back at him because the kid had a temper just like tony, plus that kid was the stronger one that you thought was supposed to protect tony, but tony kicked his ass.
Perry’s the one who ate Tony’s Lo Mein. This was long overdue
Pauliep2020 That would have been funny if he had accused him of eating his lo mein
staples fortune cookie to his chest
And the last piece of cake, and the gabagool and the whole tray of lasagna.
"My arm" lol
I love how Paulie combs his hair :)
Perry jumped out of the refrigerator and came at Tony with a Chainsaw. He had a right to defend himself.
She was giving advice to him all along without knowing it.
that looked like he had the makings of a varsity athlete.
The look on Paulie's face is soo confused🤔...
It's as if he's just been asked to answer lifes most important question.
LOL!!!😆👍❗
lol i love how hes like dont doo it no no no no!!!
a very risky move, but Tony needed to do something to prove that he was still a strong leader. This his how you keep yourself at the top of a hierarchy.
Judging by their physiques, I can't help but feel that the outcome of this scene was a tad unrealistic
+Stephen Pryce That's not the way it works.
+Bob Jenkins
Pull up Roy Neilson vs Cheick Kongo. It is not what you look like.
+Stephen Pryce Thats why you don't judge by physique, idiot! Tony has been beating people up his whole life
+ben1ben2ben1 Thanks for calling me an idiot... I'm not saying that physique is the only determining factor in fighting ability, but it's got to be a big factor. It's no coincidence that most professional fighters are in great shape and retire beyond a certain age.
Stephen Pryce
These are not professional fighters. Tony is a hardcore killer who has been fucking people up his whole life.
Nice of him to pay the hospital tab
Just as long as he realized
Rest in peace a great actor..
If he hurt Tony, that would have been the end of his short life!
jbug1979 You do realize Tony had about 90 pounds on this guy and about 5 inches in height and lots more fighting experience.
jack frost i'll say it again... GUNSHOT GUNSHOT GUNSHOT!!!!
Well he just shouldn't have slam the goddamn refrigerator door
Mendim Gashi He deeddedint
MobHeataEnt what you gonna argue with me know
The song in the back ground is Every Day of the Week by The Students.
Galero15 Thank you!
1958 I think.
One of the greatest scenes imo
One of the best scene.
Not going in depth, whateva happened there
@@nowrestlingiq7317 🤣 I don't remember this at all...must've been off my tits on something.
Only thing redeeming about Tony was that he loved Animals and his daughter, that's it. Anyone who aspires to be like him aspires to be an ass. Can't stand "people" like this.
@Theirishman02 there's tons of ways to make it in the world
Everyone at the table was literally just vibing
A once in a lifetime, mighty actor, up there with Brando and De Niro. Can`t believe he`s gone, thought he`d be around for a long time. Sad time. Jim and Sopranos are the reason people watch Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Thrones. He was so fucking good he made TV cool. Thanks big fella, I raise my Sambuca glass to you.
Tony picked the baddest guy he knew he could beat up... The scene right before this he sized up Bobby Bacalla (asked him weight, etc.) and knew he wouldnt stand a chance.
the guy just got shot, obviously going after the fittest guy is still not smart. bobby would have taken him though.
@@backatit332 It's funny you say that, because Bobby did in fact take him in the very next episode when they were playing Monopoly.
Eyyyy ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Fuggedabowdit!
I like how Paulie snaps his fingers to check on that kid after T walks away
That guy was holding back because Tony was the boss. He could easily kick Tony's ass.
no way, tony is a 250lbs mob boss. he didnt become boss by being a pussy
this show is fictional. human runner is right. It doesn't matter how big you are tony in real life being 250lbs eating his ass off like he does would be slow and run out of stamina way faster than the other guy. don't get me wrong if tony hit him straight on it would probably hurt him, but no way tony soprano would actually hold his own in a real street fight.
he'd get his ass handed to him.
It didn't look like he was, holding anything back to me
Human runner Gandolfini was a krav maga artist in real life apparently
the reason Tony did it is because he didnt want to look weak in front of his crew, he just had an operation on a gunshot wound, can't eat certain food and has a bodyguard, so to show them that he is still in control and as weak and helpless as he looks he picked a fight with the biggest guy in room and beat him to show that he is still in control and can stiĺl be as brutal as ever
+Daniel o Exactly. Amazing that it isn't Tony's position alone that earns him respect, but that he has to still exert this kind of arbitrary control over his crew. Imagine one of the older bosses, usually on heart medicine and with oxygen tubes, having to reestablish their toughness.
Antonym Scalia so that is why Tony was puking at the end
That snap by Paulie pricelessssss
There was a subtle look on Sil's face. Everyone looked very confused, but I think Sil understood the situation.
Ah. sorry about that, no need to make fun of my perception of things.
How is this a beautiful scene? It's disturbing and violent
Nah
that look at the end in the mirror is priceless> I STILL GOT IT!
Perry yelling, "My arm!" at 2:05 is hilarious.
Tell Tony that lmao
He did it because melfi put the idea in his head. To go after the biggest baddest most intimidating person, and regaining the troops respect and fear of him.
Notice how no one got up to greet him with a hug/kiss. Sil never got up from his chair.
it is still that world
Have you guys noticed when Tony is throwing up he has his hand on the toilet bowl with the lid up??? and soon after with that same hand uses it to take a drink of water, you so nasty TONY! All the guys take dumps and whiz all over LMAO
Have you been in a situation like that? I doubt he gives a shit.
+Jasper Aquino yea i guess... but still Paulie, Sil and all the other guys taking dumps and pissing all over, yuck lok
the bathroom scene was supposed to represent a jail cell
I love how the camera pans to everyone while tony is seeing who its gna be to take his beating.
This scene is gold.
"My arm" hahaahahaahhahha Tony loses his breath taking a leak hahaahahahaah kid woulda destroyed him
Naw he wouldn't done anything if he did he would of gotten whacked right there tobys the boss n he wanted to let his people know that
He had to show who was still the boss, Silvio was being a jerk to him.
He's smart because he knew that guy(forgot his name) would fight to make it look real.I recall earlier in the episode, the guy was about to fight someone in traffic infront of tony.He has a short temper.
Also, tony's reputation is unquestioned seeing who he took out.Him beating up the biggest guy shows who's in charge.
Makes you wonder just how good is Noah he once stated that he could punch Tony’s lights out
Talk about a “no win” situation. The poor bastard was ready to get up and defend himself and hears “Don’t do it!!” I’m 60 and could still win any fight I start if my opponent can’t fight back.
Play stupid games win stupid prizes. No one forced him to associate with the mafia
@@rickyj1250 Can't argue with that.
that guy had it coming
How in the hell did he have it coming?!? He didn't do nothing to Tony.
***** John Doe.... is....joking.
I don't approve with Tony did but that guy was crazy to raise his hands to the boss. I mean a made guy can't hit the boss and the boss can hit the made guy but this guy wasn't even an associate let alone a made guy
A boss cant lay hands on a made guy unless there's a valid reason, if that guy was made, Tony would have to apologise or give him some money
omi won He did give him some money eventually - I think it was in the next episode.
Ahmed Elattar yeah you're right he does pay hiim back and its in the same episode i think
***** lol, nah its my favourite show just know a thing or two about it
*****
LMAO
You left out the smile at the end
I love how this scene is shot, with close-up of the biceps of the various goons as tony feels weak. The zoom in reminds me of episode where irina is at zelman’s and they zoom In on her red heels.
nnb203 this scene was one of the reasons why the sopranos was probably the best series ever
