Howard Andrew Jones is phenomenal. His blog alone taught me so much about writing, and his contributions to S&S, rescuing Harold Lamb from obscurity, and the Hanuvar series should not be overlooked. He is a true scholar, and although I only spoke with him on social media, he is a gentleman as well. I pray he finds comfort, joy, and peace in his remaining time.

Howard Andrew Jones did a service getting Lamb back in print.
I sent two stories in to Magician's Skull. Jones accepted neither but he took the time to give me personal responses that were encouraging rather than a form rejection. I will always remember that.

Just heard the news and I’ve been bummed all day. I really hope some miracle happens…
He introduced me to tons of stuff, Harold Lamb, Barbarian king…
Just crap news, all the best to him and his family, and big thank you for all his work, no matter what he will not be forgotten.

He has been a major part of the recent resurgence of the S&S genre. It’s a shame we will be losing such a great talent and that his friends and family will be losing a great person.

You gotta get the Harold Lamb volumes that Howard compiled and edited for Nebraska. They're excellent.
I've corresponded sporadically thru email with Howard for twenty years or more, initially about Lamb. He's a fine fellow, a gentleman in all my dealings with him. The recent news is heartbreaking for his family and the people who've come to love Howard through his writing. Thanks for posting this excellent appreciation of Howard and his work.

Thanks, Michael. I was absolutely devastated on Thursday when I found out. I can second you in recommending his Hanuvar. I haven’t read his Pathfinder tales yet but the other works are also lovely. I hope his last days are good, but it doesn’t sound like a lovely thing. I had heard book 4 in Hanuvar was already sent to Baen but I’d need to confirm this. Howard is such a genuine and kind man. ❤️ ⚔️ Swords together!

Michael, I read about this tragic news earlier in the week. I'm absolutely gutted. He is such a nice man, I've corresponded with him a few time over the years on Twitter. I read The Desert Of Souls, it is excellent. I enjoyed it as much as The Throne Of The Crescent Moon, by Saladin Ahmed. The two books came out about the same time. I recently purchased a book called Hither Came Conan, and there are many contributions from Howard Andrew Jones, in it that relate to the Robert E.Howard Conan stories. It is a wonderful book, you would love it I'm sure. Thoughts and prayers go out to Howard and his family and friends. Your video will hopefully inspire people to look his work up.

The Harold Lamb books are incredible, and we are very lucky that Jones did such a great job collecting his work. Khlit is right up there with Conan as far as great fictional heroes go.

Really tough news. I've followed his work since he edited those Harold Lamb collections that came out years ago, and although I still need to read the Hanuvar books, I enjoyed his other books, such as his Pathfinder books. I'm an "it's not over until it's over" type, so despite the dire outlook I will pray that something breaks right and he sticks with us longer than they're claiming.

Such a great, and helpful guy too. My author friend, Adrian Cole told me, only a few weeks ago, that Howard had been really supportive & helpful while Adrian was seeking new homes for books, both published, and planned, when the original publisher suddenly decided not to publish fiction anymore.

Tragic news! But well-reported, Michael, and so glad you shared it. I stumbled across Desert of Souls soon after it appeared, read it, loved it. Later I discovered that HAJ and I are both Hoosiers. Love a happy coincidence. Even if I did move elsewhere. Now to track down his Harold Lamb books…

Further proof how random life is. Without rhyme or reason. We must all try to leave something creative behind, while we can. Perhaps a book written is the best epitaph.

This really was sad news. I loved Tales of the Magicians Skull and Lord of a Shattered Land! Howard was such an enthusiastic champion of the Sword and Sorcery genre. He will be greatly missed. I hope his remaining time is filled with happiness. I was mentioning elsewhere that I teach High School history. I was teaching about the Punic Wars yesterday and thought about Howard. I taught about Hannibal with as much energy as I could for him.

Almost a tragic trend of great short weird fiction writers named Howard who die too soon, although from the look of him Howard Jones has led a comparatively longer life then HPL and REH, if not a fiction career. Don't know much about how brain cancer varies, but I hope he lives much long as he can in quality living, whether that includes writing or not.

Thats a great shame to hear. Can the Hanover books be read stand alone or better to be read in order? Harold Lamb is a very interesting fellow, he was in the OSS ! Love the cover of Magicians Skull no. 8, and last question: does no. 10 have a Samurai story ? 🥷
