Hell is a place of physical discomfort, mental depression, moral depravity, social deprivation and utter spiritual desolation. The worse thing about hell is that you have to live without God.
Death is never a cessation of existence but rather a change of bodies and location. Jesus gives us a correct understanding of Sheol in Luke 16 when He tells the story of the rich man and Lazarus. Some people think this is a parable, but I do not. Even if it’s just a parable, Jesus would not be inaccurate about what happens to the saved and the lost after death. Therefore, we can learn a lot from this story. The rich man and the souls of the lost who have died a physical death are in Sheol at this moment. (Luke 16:23 NKJV) We know they have bodies because he requested water to be put on his tongue. The rich man reported being in agony in flames, but obviously, his body did not burn up. But the torment in flames will continue in Gehenna, which is the Lake of Fire, the second death. The saints in Revelation 6:10-11 were in heaven and given white robes to wear while they waited. Therefore, all souls of all the dead appear to have an intermediate body currently. At the rapture and resurrection of the lost, ALL humans will be given new bodies for eternity. John 5:28-29 (NASB) 28, "Do not be amazed at this; for a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come out: those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a RESURRECTION of judgment. Jesus said in [Mat 25:46 KJV] 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment(G2851): but the righteous into life eternal. The KJV translates Strong's G2851 in the following manner: punishment (1x), torment (1x). Just a few verses earlier Jesus said [Mat 25:41 KJV] 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting FIRE, prepared for the devil and his angels. We know from Rev 20:10 and Rev 14:9-11 that the devil, false prophet, and all who take the mark of the beast in the last days will be cast into the Lake of Fire, which burns forever and ever. We know the lost will also be cast into the lake of fire after the Great White Throne judgment. So why do only lost humans get annihilated but not the false prophet who is a lost human and humans who take the mark of the beast? And not all of Revelation is symbolic. I think most Biblically savvy Christians can discern the symbolic from the actual. The false prophet is an actual person. He may have been possessed, but he’s still a lost human. Jesus said the lost will go into “everlasting punishment” which is the same as what the devil, the false prophet, and the demons are going to get. If the lost are annihilated once thrown into the Lake of eternal fire, then that’s not everlasting punishment. The punishment ends when they cease to feel torment when they no longer exist when they are annihilated. Rev 14:11 "And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name." The words “they have no rest day and night” convey continuing torment that doesn’t end with annihilation. The words “day and night” are also used to describe that the torment that the devil and the false prophet are experiencing is forever. Matthew 10:28 (KJV) And fear not them which kill G615 the body, but are not able to kill G615 the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroyG622 both soul and body in hell. Notice the verb changes from G615 of what man can do to G622 of which God can do. G615 is translated as “kill.” The KJV translates Strong's G615 in the following manner: kill (55x), slay (14x), put to death (6x). G622 (apollymi) is translated as “destroy.” The KJV translates Strong's G622 in the following manner: perish (33x), destroy (26x), lose (22x), be lost (5x), lost (4x), miscellaneous (2x). I believe that G622 (apollymi) could describe an ongoing destruction process. This would appropriately describe "the second death" in Gehenna of an eternal soul in a resurrected immortal body. Moses’ burning bush was on fire but not destroyed. As pointed out above, the rich man and all lost humans are currently experiencing flames of torment in Sheol without cessation of existence. [2 Thessalonians 1:9 NASB20] 9 “These people will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.” The Strong’s Greek word for destruction in this verse is G3639 ólethros, ol'-eth-ros; from a primary ὄλλυμι óllymi (to destroy; a prolonged form); ruin, i.e. death, punishment:-destruction. The words in this verse, “eternal destruction” could not mean annihilation because of the added words “away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.”
Wonderful teacher..One of the best!
