As a big DIY person, I like watching videos where someone shows you how they did a particular repair. But there is no need to criticize this guy for every little thing he said or did that's different than the way YOU would have done it. If you know so much, make your own video. I appreciate guys like this who share how they did their own repairs.
Doesnt matter how it gets done or how long it takes as long as it saves you money and it's done correct those comment mean nothing. Trust me I have been ase master certed for years I rarely do book techniques every single time especially when I worked at the dealer chasing a clock everyday. The guys not thinking outside the box never have good percentages and never make bonuses!!!
Great video. No horribele music, but clear instructions. I did buy the OTC tool two years ago as I knew I would need it one day. I keep cars forever. My 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee looks new. New driveshafts from Tom Woods and now front and rear suspension. Took me 30 min each side and enjoyed doing it. Local place wanted $945.00 per side. RockAuto cost me $145 for high quality ball joints and did not have to leave the house. Thank you!!!

I had a bad case of DW (Death Wobble) on my 2000 Grand Cherokee limited. I chased it forever it seemed. I replaced all the front end components except what I believe was the cause. I did a brake job (Pads and rotors) and the DW went away. So I believe the rotors warped. The TEVES style calipers are known to warp the rotors of modified Jeeps with those style brakes. So consider warped rotors as an issue that can cause DW.
@@papaschuette interesting! How long have you been without death wobble after replacing the brake components. My dads ended up being ball joints. They felt fine but it was the cause.
@@MrStatic101 It's going on 3 months without it. I will be doing the ball joints in a few days as well. I'm also switching from the TEVES calipers to the heavier duty AKEBONO calipers. And with them needing replaced, I'm doing the ball joints while I've got things torn apart. Luckily, I did the CV axles about 4 years ago, so things shouldn't be too hard to break loose. A can of PB Blaster will be my friend. I'll come back to let you know about how the job went for me.
I'm glad you said how long it took. I have descent tools, but arthritis and a limited knowledge, but I'm determined. It took me about as long as it did you and I was also solo on this.
I also have really bad arthritis frozen shoulders and suspect a surgery in the near future so I want to do this job plus the rear upper and lower control arms. Just bought a Millwaukee stubby 1/2" Impact wrench to help ease the pain. Still need a jack and stands, parts. The money I'm saving is going into tools that probably use once a year?✌
Although I now have an impact wrench back in the day we would either put a breaker bar on and back car up or put a hydraulic jack under breaker bar to loosen axle nut.
Great video! There are a lot of these vehicles on the road. So, you've helped a lot of us. I'm in need to do this on my Jeep, but have done it several times on other vehicles. At the end of the video you remark on the time it took. I found its one of those that takes 11 hours on one side and 3 hours on the other. :-) Thanks, again!
Great video detail and explanation. Ready to tackle this in my 01 Grand Cherokee. I see why C ring clip may not be needed. Thank you. Ezzy peezy- NOPE!! But doable. My kid happens to have ball joint tool kits that have only been used 1-2 times.
For any of you wondering... I was quoted about $2,500 for upper and lower ball joints, upper and lower control arms, inner and outer tire rods, front and rear sway bar endlinks, rotor and break pads, steering stabilizer, front shocks, and grease work - whatever that means... Did it all myself for $450 + $90 alignment. And yes, this job takes forever without power tools (10-15 hrs) and is labor intensive - in my opinion it is harder than pulling an engine, but not as much of a pain as pulling an automatic transmission without a lift. Make sure you torque the bolts under load, it helps the bushings seat. You can put a jack under the break disk to give it load. Btw the feeling of driving it after is worth it and feels so much safer and precise.

Well you did it anyway so be glad--No need to separate the hub from the axle, I just remove as an assembly. A few weeks ago I did BOTH front axles including replacing the rusty backing plates, I got both shafts online for under 80.00 shipped and hubs were cheap too, backing plates factory Mopar and 26.00 each shipped and replaced all 6 hub bolts, that was 52.00, the bolts heads were badly rusted and I didn't want to risk it, should be all set with axles until its in Jeep heaven. You probably saved at least 200.00-300.00 as shop gets 2 hours just to replace an axle
I found I didn't have to take the axle nut off. I took of the caliper bolts and pulled the rotor and caliper together. Then I took the 3 hub bolts loose and pulled the axle and hub together as an assembly. Also, I didn't need to take the tie-rod ends off. I just pulled it all to the side. Saves a few aggravating steps.
This is a great DIY video, I found when doing the uppers to use a big washer like in this video and when its 80% in use a small sledge hammer and cup from receiver from press and this puts it in. straight. My bottom ones were very hard to press out I finally had to use breaker bar and sledge to get it to pop. PBlaster helped it to move. Give yourself at least 4 - 5 hours on each side. Brute force and BFH and you can do it.I found a very nice press on Amazon (Astro 4 wheel drive press). Rugged ridge ball joints.

by the way, if you are jeep liberty owner, 2005 in my case, there is recall for lower ball joints and Jeep will do it for free, after few months of waiting for parts they have to order, and you can get the parts from ebay or Autozone or anywere but Jeep dont allowed it. Thats how i know the price, i did not want to wait couple of months, but i am going to.
I just replaced the upper and lower ball joints in my 97 grand Cherokee. The upper ball joint that has up and down movement when you pulled on it is normal. I thought the same thing when i removed it and was able to push the stud in and out. The brand new Moog upper joints do the same exact thing. Why ,no idea. but the side movement is warn.

Question: By chance, David, do you know the actual name of the "rotor LUG retaining clips"? I know they aren't re-installed by most DIYers but I like them as they hold the disk brake rotor in place nicely and easily so, a one man job like this is just that much easier when reinstalling thebrake caliper,. And, they are factory installed so, id like to go back the same way as they came off? Thanks in advance
They can go by several names and are available in Home Depot, Lowes, etc., they are called Internal Tooth Starlock Washers, or Push Nut, Stud Retention washers. The size is the size of the stud they go on and not their actual center hole dimension.

The GrandCherokee and many other solid axle(live axle) vehicle alignments will only involve setting "toe". Unless you find a shop that is honest they'll only set toe and send you on your way. Most are too lazy to adjust castor if required. Camber can only be adjusted by installing offset ball joints. There are four separate adjustments in an alignment. Castor/Camber and Thrust Angle and Toe. Research prior to taking to alignment shop.
David, i have same jeep so your video is great. Very basic question to ask you regarding jacking it up, front of vehicle is it ok to jack it up under the axle gear housing where you have it in the video. Thanks man
+Marco M I jack up the front as close to the differential as possible to be in the center. I try not to ride the lip of the differential so the the lifting pad is on completely the axial. I cannot find a place where the front comes up evenly or level. If I use stands then I set the low side first and lower the jeep onto the other side.

I seen a video talking about putting anti seize on the bolts threads and some other areas and the next time they replaced the ball joints it was 3 hours on each side. Probably take me a week if I had the tools and an instructor 🤣
I'm having trouble reinstalling the axle, how did you get passed the bottom ball joint grease fitting? The cv joint hits the grease fitting. It won't let the axle seat.
Great video but 2 things. First why would you eliminate the grease fitting on the lower ball joint and second of the lock ring doesn't fit apparently you got either the wrong ball joint or s cheaply made one . Totally not advisable to not use lock ring.
Doing mine this long weekend, 4 Moog brand with the greaseable lowers for 130.00 from Summit racing, shops gets 460.00 labor and that's not dealer rate
If your grease fitting in center of your upper and lower ball joints is in the way on the bottom put your bottom fitting on top and your top on the bottom
Hi I'm not sure if it's my balljoints but recently if I hit a pot hole, my front tires slam really hard like I hit a wall. My upper control arms are 4 years old, lowers are old but think good, shocks are good. Anybody???
4hrs top with new brakes pads included, there were a few steps you could off did to same time , but over all great video ,what did you torck the axle not to when you were done ?
I can do it but my issues are, I don't have all the right tools, no jack, no stands no remove/replace tools and no driveway or garage. By the time I bought or rent tools, jack and stands and a buddy's driveway, just as well take to shop and save the headache, gas, and ware and tear on my body. Not to mention if I break a bolt.
I have to put all new tie rod and balls joint on my 2003 jeep cherokee what should I do first??? Also what's a good great to use for the balls joint this is my first time doing this kind of work
This is actually quite a bit of work for a DIY to tackle. You will need an alignment after you replace the tie rods so that should be last if you do not do everything at once. Otherwise if you take everything apart at once, you can reassemble in any order that is convenient for you. Try to get the wheels straight but don't worry about a crooked steering wheel or odd driving on the way to the alignment shop. In our area an appointment is needed for an alignment so that might be an issue.
Got a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo(WJ) 4.7L V8 (4WD) that needs all 4 ball joints replaced. Been calling local auto repair shops and they are charging between $700 and $1200 for (ball joints, labor and alignment required) But when I looked online a set of 4 ball joints kit with bars and many extras is $100-$120. Online on mechanic sites they estimate it should cost $300 total for the replacement including parts and labor. ▪︎ What does everyone think a reasonable price would be for ball joints replaced? I have $500 to spend but would like to get my windows fixed too cuz they don't work.
If you do the work yourself you only pay for parts. Shop labor works like this; if the book says the job is one hour and the Shop Rate is $100 an hour then the labor is $100. The Shop Rate varies within a town and from State to State. Here the rates run from $65 to $175 per book hour. That is before all of this inflation kicks in and I would expect that to be happening now. This job is very tool and labor intensive. If you cannot do this by yourself then family and or friends are needed. Otherwise the shop will have to be paid.
@@A_Renaissance_Man I would be fine with paying $300-$400 but I'm getting estimates 3x that at Jimmy Michael motors, Mayse Automotive and Small shops even higher. I'll keep calling around.
Doing this today will tore apart. Except I'm changing everything tie rods,hubs, sway links, steering ends, and shocks. Can get kit for 250bucks with everything might as well do it all.
@@unxqualfn8975 go to 1a auto can get all parts to rebuild front end for under 100 bucks can get a set that had new bars for 140 i think. The tie rods hav be a pita to get off same as Pittman arm. Order the hubs there as well they don't come in set might want to order above boots while you got it apart
Stupid question, but when you say solid axle only! what other types are there? i have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee LIMITED 4.7 liter with 4 wheel hi and 4 wheel low. ( no 2wd ). i have the steering dampner, the front pumpkin off set to the driver side a bit... looks very similar but id like to make sure i understand before i dig into this for my ball joints.
Why does it all look so easy?? Man, everything is frozen together, nothing is coming apart easy - this job is a bitch and a half for a DIY guy like myself.... but it is doable.
I dont know why they sell us ball Joints for 4x4 vehicles with straight Zerc fittings. Buy 90 degree fittings and use those instead. I cant stand not being able to grease those.
Hey Mr Mechanic .. Did the Knuckle "Fly Off" out into the stratosphere Good thing you have your Bungy cord ? Oh and another thing those rubber things you call dust cover's are called Grease boots because whats behind them is grease they keep the grease in the ball joint ...and at most that job should have been like a 4 hr per side and if you have done that job on that jeep once before your obviously using sub standard parts or CHEAP ass parts because if you get the joints I got for people they come with a lift time warranty .
Why you giving this guy a hard time??? Your so-called "Lifetime warranty" doesn't mean the parts will NEVER fail. And if you already know EVERYTHING about this kind of work, why are you watching someone else's video?

I did this on both sides and had them replaced in about 8 hours give or take. Good video to get the idea of how to do it.

If you did that job you could do the alignment. Much less manual labor on the alignment.

Here because I have outside wear on my front passenger side. Driver side as well but much more slight than my passenger side.
I think you mean well, but it's an axle, not axial, and you mixed up the floor jack from the jack stand.
You didn't have to use that angle adapter for the top ball joints????? I've seen a few video that you had to use it same year jeep

I do not remember having an issue reinstalling the CV Axle Perhaps someone will see your question and answer this for you.

4hrs top with new brakes pads included, there were a few steps you could off did to same time , but over all great video ,what did you torck the axle not to when you were done ?
axle spec on my 99 laredo was 175 ft lbs
I can do it but my issues are, I don't have all the right tools, no jack, no stands no remove/replace tools and no driveway or garage. By the time I bought or rent tools, jack and stands and a buddy's driveway, just as well take to shop and save the headache, gas, and ware and tear on my body. Not to mention if I break a bolt.
I have to put all new tie rod and balls joint on my 2003 jeep cherokee what should I do first??? Also what's a good great to use for the balls joint this is my first time doing this kind of work
This is actually quite a bit of work for a DIY to tackle. You will need an alignment after you replace the tie rods so that should be last if you do not do everything at once. Otherwise if you take everything apart at once, you can reassemble in any order that is convenient for you.
Try to get the wheels straight but don't worry about a crooked steering wheel or odd driving on the way to the alignment shop. In our area an appointment is needed for an alignment so that might be an issue.
Did you have to use the Angle adapter to press them in ???
You don't have to remove the big Nut in the middle. Just have to remove the Hub Bearing 3 bolts from behind. It will come out with the Bearing.

Got a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo(WJ) 4.7L V8 (4WD) that needs all 4 ball joints replaced.
Been calling local auto repair shops and they are charging between $700 and $1200 for (ball joints, labor and alignment required)
But when I looked online a set of 4 ball joints kit with bars and many extras is $100-$120.
Online on mechanic sites they estimate it should cost $300 total for the replacement including parts and labor.
▪︎ What does everyone think a reasonable price would be for ball joints replaced?

If you do the work yourself you only pay for parts. Shop labor works like this; if the book says the job is one hour and the Shop Rate is $100 an hour then the labor is $100. The Shop Rate varies within a town and from State to State. Here the rates run from $65 to $175 per book hour. That is before all of this inflation kicks in and I would expect that to be happening now. This job is very tool and labor intensive. If you cannot do this by yourself then family and or friends are needed. Otherwise the shop will have to be paid.
@@A_Renaissance_Man I would be fine with paying $300-$400 but I'm getting estimates 3x that at Jimmy Michael motors, Mayse Automotive and Small shops even higher.

Doing this today will tore apart. Except I'm changing everything tie rods,hubs, sway links, steering ends, and shocks. Can get kit for 250bucks with everything might as well do it all.

@@unxqualfn8975 go to 1a auto can get all parts to rebuild front end for under 100 bucks can get a set that had new bars for 140 i think. The tie rods hav be a pita to get off same as Pittman arm. Order the hubs there as well they don't come in set might want to order above boots while you got it apart
I got the whole front end kit with upper lower control arms tie rod ends ball joints sway bar stabilizer bar and all joints for 500

Stupid question, but when you say solid axle only! what other types are there? i have a 2004 jeep grand cherokee LIMITED 4.7 liter with 4 wheel hi and 4 wheel low. ( no 2wd ). i have the steering dampner, the front pumpkin off set to the driver side a bit... looks very similar but id like to make sure i understand before i dig into this for my ball joints.

Thats not a WJ...The drag link/tierod are incorrect and the front lower control arm mount is incorrect
Why does it all look so easy?? Man, everything is frozen together, nothing is coming apart easy - this job is a bitch and a half for a DIY guy like myself.... but it is doable.
Andy Kiefer This one is really tough of a DIYer. Really tighten down the ball joint nuts or the wheels will sequel when turning.

I dont know why they sell us ball Joints for 4x4 vehicles with straight Zerc fittings. Buy 90 degree fittings and use those instead. I cant stand not being able to grease those.

Hey Mr Mechanic .. Did the Knuckle "Fly Off" out into the stratosphere Good thing you have your Bungy cord ? Oh and another thing those rubber things you call dust cover's are called Grease boots because whats behind them is grease they keep the grease in the ball joint ...and at most that job should have been like a 4 hr per side and if you have done that job on that jeep once before your obviously using sub standard parts or CHEAP ass parts because if you get the joints I got for people they come with a lift time warranty .
Why you giving this guy a hard time??? Your so-called "Lifetime warranty" doesn't mean the parts will NEVER fail. And if you already know EVERYTHING about this kind of work, why are you watching someone else's video?
What irritates me in these videos is fact they already have everything set up as far as what adapters to use, they don't really show which ones to use
@@peteburger3970 the tools were borrowed from the auto parts store. They have loan-a-tools that you purchase and get a 100% refund when you bring them back. They will help you with the selection if you don't know what is needed for your particular vehicle.
