    Please note: I haven't had the VR1 very long and my time has been limited, so this video is an informal discussion on my thoughts and opinions so far. As I'm sure you can appreciate, things can feel very different testing the headset in my own environment vs a time limited demonstration.
    Also... The VR1 featured in this video it NOT final. In fact, it's quite old now (things are moving very fast) so this won't be a review. Not yet anyway... Think of it as a new series, a journey even, as I learn more about it.

    Thanks for the video Steve! Just for the information - we did not want to wait for the next batch of VR1s being finalized today, so we sent Steve an interim headset with some improvements but some things not final. We do expect to swap with another headset fairly soon. I am glad you are enjoying it and thank you very much for your feedback! Cheers! ♥

    Thanks for an early impressions video of the Somnium VR1 headset. Several months ago, I watched with interest the video of your experience in Prague with an early development version of the VR1 headset. I trust your judgement. At that time I reserved my VR1 headset. I plan this to be a replacement for my HP Reverb G2 headset.
    I will be extremely interested in any recommendations, details and impressions you can share in the coming weeks and months.

    Just reading through the comments Steve, you're going to be busy for a while! Great job from Artur and the Somnium Space team, and being a receptive as they as are just means so much to the flight simulation community. The headset looks good for racing sims as well. Hopefully the weight will be well balanced and not feel heavy in use. I'm sure for simmers the cheaper versions will still prove to be more than up to the job of delivering a first class VR simulation experience.

So with the bright panels, I'd like to know how well the local dimming works along with any glare you might be seeing (specifically dark scenes, either flying at night or even Elite Dangerous). - Can you please do a side by side performance comparison with the Pimax Crystal in terms of performance? Both at full FoV and 100% render resolution. Is the 4090 enough? Because it's barely enough for the Crystal. Is the VR1 more efficient or less efficient in terms of render performance?
    - Does it have any kind of center or edge distortion?
    - Does it have CA/color shifting?
    I hope that you could give some feedback on that, thank you in advance!

    Thanks Steve! Obviously the passthru cameras, and hand tracking are of great interest. Reviewing eye tracking performance too please (using Tobii right?)? I know they are still tweaking audio but looking forward to a review of audio. The biggest though is going to be performance. Anyone following what Artur and team are doing knows how badass this thing will be. But I'm barely holding on to 80-90 fps in DCS with Quad Views and DFR in the Aero and would hate to go backwards. So I would like to see reviews on performance, performance, & performance, especially DCS and OpenXR. Thanks! Great work as always!

    Actually quantifying **useful** field of view would be valuable.
    For example, overlay a virtual monitor, move it out to around 50 degrees off-center (100 FoV),
    adjust font size to smallest that is still easily legible,
    then do the math to estimate how many rows and columns of legible text.
    Yes, this is as much about VR1 as monitor replacement as it is for checking aircraft instrument panels at a glance.

    What I want to see:
    Passthrough is big on my mind. Passthrough software setup and passthrough clarity. I plan to use this for both flight and sim racing. So it would be good to know if this works with any software well without any issues.
    Speakers:
    I noticed you don't have a headset on. How are the built in speakers?
    Microphone:
    There were a lot of pops in this recording. I'm assuming that is being worked on or maybe it was your recording settings...
    Comfort:
    We knew it was going to be heavy. How does it feel on the face, around the nose, after about an hour or two? Is the strap supportive enough. Does the HMD feel like it wants to fall down? I know we have a lot of options to make custom head straps.
    Hand tracking:
    Being a flight simmer, but mostly a sim racer. Being able to control the PC with hand tracking would be amazing. I've done this some with the quest 3 and when going back to my aero I miss the hand tracking PC control feature.
    I love the aero and it's excellent. But I find the aero no matter what has a slightly out of focus feel whereas the quest 3 is strain free and perfect on the eyes. This could be a focal distance issue or a lens issue. It seems maybe the VR1 has solved this with better lenses and focal distance adjustment...
    Performance:
    Compared to the aero how is the fps decrease linear with the resolution increase? Is there any inefficiency there?

  • @DS52116
    @DS52116 4 месяца назад

    @VR Flight Sim Guy and @artursychov My big questions all revolve around performance:
    (1) Refresh rate options? 72, 80, 90, 120hz are all there? Any more?
    (2) Quadviews support and high quality DFR? How much does it help performance, particularly in DCS, to offset the high res/high FOV?
    (3) Quality of the motion reprojection algorithm, especially when needing to drop down to 36 and 45fps. How does it hold up and compare to the best algorithms (ie Meta)?
    (4) Ok, one that is not performance. Weight, in grams, for each different model. Long term comfort on the neck is important. Will dropping off the Mixed Reality save much weight? How about hand tracking and moving that to an external unit? And on this note, perhaps Somnium would consider a counter balance setup in the box without us needing to use third party sellers?
    (5) Prescription Eye lenses support. Will you ensure the headset will be able to have prescription lenses designed for it? Even better, would you consider setting up the headset with 1st party lenses, or at least an interchangeable system? I know how critical quality lenses are to the IQ, so accounting for this may be important.
    Thank you!

    I was considering purchase of the Pimax Crystal but even before seeing this vid, I decided no, mainly because of the huge size, cheap controllers, and heard reports of setup and software hassle. What I would like to see is a 'Somnium' VR1' comparison with the 'Bigscreen Beyond'. The 'BB VR' seems the best value for under £1500. The 'Somnium VR1' along with the 'Apple Vision Pro' and high end 'Varjo' VRs are way to pricey! Presently use a Pico 4, which compares well with a friends 'Quest 3', Thanks Ian.

    Any idea about pricing for the various versions? And if it is a modular design, as in, being able to, let's say, buy a base version, and then the modules you want at a later date, or you have to choose the version you want at the time of purchase?
    What about audio? Is there an on board audio option, or do we have to use our own headphones?

    With the Pimax Crystal Core (PCVR, no battery) coming in Q2 and the Crystal Pro with mOLED coming in Q4, the VR1 will be DOA.

    put a greenscreen infront of you, chroma key it out, and boom, you can see your hands in game. Plus, you can use the buttons on the top to quickswitch it between on and off. Don't forget about the buttons on top

    Can you use foveated rendering with eye tracking in MSFS with Somnium VR1?

  • @SargonDragon
    @SargonDragon 6 месяцев назад

    I've seen a lot of people say this headset will be DOA because its specs are similar to the Pimax Crystal which is much cheaper. But if the Somnium VR1 is actually reliable and stable_, it will be miles better than the Crystal because of that alone.

    Exciting early impressions! Can you talk about the cables? My understanding is the base model has 1 cable running from the headset, and the fully loaded model has 2. Does having 2 cables affect daily usability? With the extra cost for the fully loaded model and the extra weight + additional cable, is it worth going for the fully loaded model for consumer sim racing and flight enthusiasts?

    A nice box, fov of 125. Clearer than PC. Front camera (mixed reality ?) You made me regret the purchase of my PCRYSTAL a few months ago after watching your video ... I guess I ll wait for the P12K with its 150 fov .... (possibly trade in my PC). I wonder if 12k will have front camera....

    Steve, your the man! After the debacle with the Reverb g2, I'm lost with the direction i should go in the future as it pertains to Vr. I was not too incline with the Pimax bc of mix revues, and the quest 3 was not for me. When however, Somnium VR1 came to my attention i was intrigued but still uncertain. Still trying to find out more, but obviously nothing solid as risen bc of the beta current stage. With this now at the fore front of the discussion, u betcha i will be all in. I would like to know which model is displayed here and how is it comparable to the pass through version for FS2020. If the pass through version will add anymore depth to FS2020 at all.

    From another review video, I saw that optical warping when moving you head is currently an issue with the Somnium. The Varjo aero suffered from this very badly at release, but after a number of software updates it was pretty much competely eliminated. I would like to know where Somnium are at with this?

  • @cedrick7679

    Too bad this headset has aspheric lenses! If it had pancake lenses, I would have taken it right away! Personally, I have tested the Pimax Crystal and the Varjo Aero, and I'm not a fan of either headset because of their aspherical lenses. The image is very sharp in the center, but I find that it feels like you're looking through the bottom of a bottle. Even though the resolution is lower, I prefer the Pico 4 (with an RTX 4090) for DCS or FS. By the way, VR Flight Sim Guy, do you see any distortion in this headset?

    • @ianrivaldosmith
      @ianrivaldosmith 6 месяцев назад +1

      Exactly my thoughts too.

    • @VRFlightSimGuy
      @VRFlightSimGuy  6 месяцев назад +2

      I'm genuinely not as sensitive to distortion as others, probably because I'm already used to Apheric lenses. But for what it's worth, I have no issues with the profile I'm running currently.

    It’s an interesting headset. It doesn’t scream out as an absolute must have though. I think the form factor will be the biggest hang up just like the Crystal. Put the Crystal, VR1, and Big Screen Beyond all side by side in front of 100 vr people and I am willing to bet 60 will go for the BSB and the Crystal and VR1 fight out for the remaining 40. Part of the enjoyment of VR is the complete experience and the majority of people don’t want to wear a chunk of lead on their head no matter how well balanced that lead is.
