- Calumet & Hecla Mining 0-6-4T 3 "Torch Lake" operating at the Greenfield Village at the Henry Ford in Detroit, MI.
Built in 1873, this Mason Bogie locomotive is one of the oldest continuously operating steam locomotives in the United States. As a Mason Machines Works design, the 3 has a pivot design on the driving wheels, which give it a slight amount of articulation to sharp curves.
The "Torch Lake" has been a part of the Henry Ford collection since 1969, and has long been in operation on the park's three-mile loop of track. The "Torch Lake" continues to put on an excellent show as it continues operating at 150 years old.
Celebrate Torch Lake at 150 with a cake in the firebox. Learn more at www.thehenryford.org/collections-and-research/digital-collections/artifact/190854
I fortunately live near Greenfield Village, and in my opinion, it's better than Disney World. My favorite locomotive has to probably be the Edison.
Would have been awesome to see that engine running up in the Keweenaw peninsula! Very little equipment from the UP’s railroads made it into preservation, so it’s always a treat to see both C&H number 3s out running.
Mashaallah 150 Years old and still runs wow!
Happy 150th Birthday Torch Lake, so glad I made her my 500th steam locomotive that I've ever seen in person last year!!!
Fantastic video! I'm glad ya'll went back and covered her with a full video. Its so hard to find solid videos of Torch Lake operating on youtube.
Glad you enjoyed. Greenfield Village is a nice place and we were glad to get plenty of Torch Lake that day.
God what’s next? “Norfolk & Western 611: Virginia Scenic Steam Train”?

Nice done video :)
Thanks
Good stuff as always!
Thanks
Hey dynamo, I wanted to ask what you used for your equipment to record these as I have been wanting to get into this myself
This particular video was shot with a pair of Sony 4K AX-53 camcorders
We made a channel specifically geared towards helping railfans better understand shooting video, actually! youtube.com/@everettmeehling?si=G0uz-hjgy37w05v3

Old suburban type
What I like about the Torch Lake is the soul surviving Mason Bogey locomotive in existence. The Mason Bogey was a very unique design and were used on both narrow gauge and standard gauge Railroads the key to their design is that the frame that carried the pilot wheels and the driving wheels was articulated from the boiler which allowed it to pivot around sharp curves I play Railroads online and we have a model of the Mason Bogey at least the narrow gauge Denver South Park & Pacific Railroad version I think it’s a great locomotive a very cool design I’m happy to say that the Torch Lake is a great example I do live video streams on RRO I always post updates on my community on my channel page
And we could've had on at iowa state
Whats the oldest operating steam locomotive in the U.S as of 2024?
It’s this engine. There are a few older ones that could be operated, but torch Lake is the oldest one currently operable.
@@DynamoProductions-trains Whats the oldest one that can be operated, but hasn't been put back into operation?
@AlexThePatriot depends who you ask. We’re not Wikipedia.
@@DynamoProductions-trains Yeah, at the end of day it's good to see something this old still going strong, hopefully 2926 will do stuff like this in the future.
