Didn't even know about it, thanks for the review! I can say Love & Mercy is one of the best biopics ever made.

Agree! It is a fantastic biopic. Far better than the usual stuff that is trotted out.

Love & Mercy was amazing it charts Brian's struggle with mental health, but also, how he made pets sounds probably the best bio fick ever.

Personally, I agree with you 100%. But, you can't blame the film makers for keeping it short. Today's audiences have such a short attention fan. Now, with that said; there IS a complete Beach Boys documentary her on YT, from Pop Goes The 60's. (in 6 parts).

    • @Neal_Schier

Matt at Pop Goes the '60s did indeed do a masterful job in his series on the BBs.

The Beatles’ Get Back sessions (also on D+) were literally made up of 3 episodes that amounted to ~8 hours. They could’ve done more with this documentary

People are watching longer and longer content each year, actually. The average movie length has increased quite a bit, and RUclips videos especially. It isn't uncommon to see 2 hour video essays on RUclips, and literally millions of young people watch it. A beach boys documentary isn't going to appeal to anyone except fans. If you're a fan already, then you can stomach even a three hour documentary. There's no reason to try to appeal to mass audiences with such a truncated length if most people won't watch it.

@@reginaldcampos5762 Well said. Many of us enjoy the long- form versions of things. Most likely all of us grew up as readers as well which fostered an appreciation for a story unfolding in more detail and at a slower pace.

I agree with everything you said. This should have been a mini series. I didn't like how 1967 on was crammed into the last half hour, and Carl and Dennis's death should have been discussed in detail

The only thing that was interesting is that admitted that there were other members of the band in the 70s like Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin, which was previously ignored in the last two documentaries on the band

@@michaelrochester48 I was amazed to find out that Ricky Fataar had been in the touring band as I only knew of him from The Rutles! I'd assumed he was another comedian/musician from the Monty Python/Saturday Night Live extended family.

I enjoyed the documentary.....but I think it could have been at least another 45 minutes long. It was far too chintzy after the 1960's era. I would have liked more about the 1970s and maybe even a little on the 1980s. Great video once again!

It was only an hour and a half. It was even shorter than their previous documentary and the only thing they got right was admitting that there was other members of the band like Ricky Fatar and Blondie Chaplin in the 70s while the other two documentaries ignored that.

I just don't think the other guys were ready to contribute too much in the early days .It took time for Dennis to develop his songwriting chops and Carl too. I'm not sure if Al and Mike(outside of his lyrical contribution) ever had too much to offer in the songwriting dept.

I subscribed to Disney just to Watch Let It Be and the Beach Boys doc. I am surprised you didn't mention Let It Be as something to watch on Disney.
I agree with you about this documentary. The bottom line is that it needs to be 3 or 4 hours longer. They could have had it as a 3 or 4 part series. I loved the film footage - found it all very interesting. I think they did a really good job with the 2 hour time frame - but it just was not nearly enough time. I would have loved to have seen a way more in depth look at the albums made from the early to mid 70s.

I’m a big fan, but your negatives sound like I would really come away from this disappointed. What’s with the 2hr limitation? The Bee Gees doc “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” was fantastic but it also suffered from being too short. But what they did have was 100% amazing … it’s just that there was so much more they could have presented. If my memory serves, I think the Eagles and the Tom Petty docs were around 4hrs and I was glued to the tv set … and I’m not even an Eagles fan.

Glad to hear your thoughts on this! I really think they did a good job at hitting home the struggle to keep up with The Beatles that Brian faced and that they acknowledge that we wouldn’t have Pepper had it not been for Pet Sounds.

You cannot put a 60 year career of a band in an hour and a half. It was even shorter than their previous documentary that aired around 2005. ABBA which had a career of only 10 years is having a six Part documentary. The Beatles with a 10 year Career had a six Part documentary. It’s insane to make a documentary about a 60 year career and only an hour and a half half. Insanity.

I just watched this a few days ago. I'm not a super hardcore fan of TBB more of a casual fan so there were vintage clips that I'd never seen before and that was fun to see. But it left me wanting more I thought it should have been longer just like I thought Let It Be should have been longer. On the other hand I thought that Get Back was way too long and repetitive and at times downright dull to watch. But it's hard to please both casual fans and hardcore fans when doing music docs.

I was a little disappointed, to be honest. The effects, transitions, and editing were nice. Great photos and some great interviews with some of the people that were actually connected to The Beach Boys story... but why they continue to intersplice interviews with younger "hip" artists in these documentaries is beyond me. I feel like it takes away from the magic of it all. It's really distracting and unnecessary. There are still a few really great documentaries on The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson if you look hard enough. They are definitely worth watching. They deserved better than this.

The only thing that was interesting about the documentary is finally admitting that there were other members of the band other than the brothers and Al Jardine. And Bruce Johnston they finally admitted about Ricky Fatar and Blondie Chaplin in the 70s version of the band which previous documentaries ignored totally.

Basically, you are a long time BB's fan, you don't need this. You already know all this. Good objective opinion though. Just watch the Endless Harmony. :) And with all his flaws, without him, he is like Brian Epstein of the Beatles, he shopped around to get a contract from a record company. As said before by a commenter, they had to not make it too long as people today don't have the attention span. ( ignore that I am 66 and have a short attention span). But as said before, for a new person, its ok. as said earlier, it would take a mini-series to get a large portion of the history.

It’s hard to really dabble into any retrospective Beach Boys anything knowing you’re going to be discussing one of the most talented songwriters of the modern pop rock era on the same grounds as the man who co wrote Kokomo, and as the owner of the band name and most coherent interviewee in 2024 will demand Mike Love is discussed in the same breath as Brian Wilson.
A man who would have had the band be a nostalgia act as early as 1966

The movie went way too easy on Mike Love. That was my biggest problem with the documentary. I laughed when he was pretending to be a part of the creative process. And I call BS on him loving Brian. You don’t fire the people you love from the band they founded.
