Josh - all of these recent videos have been absolutely monstrous - what a huge effort and transition you've had to go through from "just" gigging and throwing things on RUclips every once in a while, to a full online setup and onslaught - it is a huge achievement to have set this up and to have kept the momentum going, when it would be much easier to throw the towel in and just hibernate until you can play out again - though I get that the laying low option probably wasn't even an option, financially! Just wanted to give you a massive thumbs up for your efforts - I hope your subscribers and views keep shooting up and that RUclips becomes a proper money maker for you. Cheers!
Josh been playing for 50 years and really appreciate your playing and insight into new techniques. Thanks again and Happy and Healthy Holidays to you and your family.
Incredible playing Josh and great versatility. I know you as a blues player but I didn't know that you could hybrid pick like Johnny Hiland. That was an eye-opener. I think the reason you are so good is that you have a passion for music and all things guitar and great respect for all the great players from the past who have influenced us all.
Josh your videos are unbelievably helpful! I love how you relate all your skills to the most responsible influences in your playing. I’ve discovered so many new musicians because of you. World class instruction aside, the story telling is just as captivating!
Also a staple in country pickin' as well. I started using it on top 4 and middle 4 voicings in jazz combo to stay out of the bass players way and simulate a keyboard when there isn't one. I've been using hybrid for probably 30 years but this vid gives me 'o-plenty expanded to work on! Thanks Josh!
It’s always weird to talk about who is the best, bc everybody has their own unique sound. But, I’m convinced that Danny was the greatest to ever do it. It boggles the mind how good he was.
Thank you, Josh. Your playing and your down to earth humility inspire me tremendously. Love what you said there towards the end, “playing more honestly.” That is where I desire to be. I trust your videos will help me get there.
After watching your videos, you are giving me hope that one fine day I may actually be able to play all these wonderful sounds that are floating around in my head. I used to play with my fingers, then I forced myself to learn how to flat-pick. Now I am gonna have to force myself to learn hybrid picking.
I was a bluegrass banjoist and guitarist who wanted to play electric. My electric chops were awful until I discovered Gatton. His playing made a lot of sense to me and changed everything. Whoever uploaded those Gatton lessons where he breaks down his technique deserves a medal. I wish the “telemaster “ video would show up again. Amazing playing and storytelling!
The interesting thing about hybrid picking is once you start doing or even attempting some lame version of it it starts to become addictive or just the way you play. Now when I play I always use my fingers in some form or fashion all the time I'm just not skilled enough yet to make it sound clean
Awesome! I've always been interested in incorporating hybrid picking into my playing. I'm definitely going to be messing around with this for sure! Thanks bro as you're an AMAZING guitarist! :)
That lick at the begging is the lick from “pusher” great 👍🏼. Enjoyed that performance with Scott Devine and Gary Novak. For some reason that track stuck out. Thank you for posting this.
There's a few instructional from Danny Gatton videos on RUclips ... the one that has the banjo rolls was huge for me. I'm not even in Josh's universe in talent, but still, it transformed my playing and made me pretty friggin happy.
Great lesson Josh, there's definitely something to the sound of skin and nail on your tone as well, not to mention the ability to mute that is gained by becoming more intimate with the strings. For me it all started with the intro to La grange, never looked back 👍
Josh, it’s hard to comprehend how important THAT Guitar Player issue with Danny wearing the mask was back in the 80’s..’the greatest unknown guitar player’..it had a soundpage which was a floppy vinyl recording and tab for excerpts of Nit Pickin’..there’s one passage with the ascending diminished arpeggio that I still practice now!!
Loving all your videos Josh! I've been working really hard on hybrid picking the past month and a half or so and while I'm still in baby steps compared to what you've shown here, I feel like I'm on the cusp of serious breakthroughs in my playing too. It really does open up a whole new world of possibilities. The Hot Licks videos by Danny Gatton are mind blowing too.
Love your videos and your playing Josh ! I'm an old school player and can remember dudes like Ray Flacke, (HWY 40 Blues) Ricky Skaggs etc. Just now starting to use more of this in playing. To me, it adds two things. that feel that you get from playing without a pick and right hand ease of motion. Why wear your right hand out trying to alternate pick when your middle and third finger are right there? You're my favorite picker and your videos are the best on RUclips Thanks bro..Can't wait for the Danny one !
I’ve been trying to get some Charlie Parker double-time licks into my playing and find it near impossible to play thm flatpicked both at speed AND with Bird’s dynamics/precision. Your playing toward the end of the video completely nails it. I’m inspired to try them all hybrid picked. It seems so obvious when I hear you do it - thanks. Gamechanging is right!
I'm just starting to learn hybrid picking. Its a steep learning curve at the start. I can already see it opens so many doors. But man, it just feels weird to pick with those fingers - not to mention it hurts at the start!
Hi Josh, superb introduction tutorial to Hybrid Picking. Is there any change to obtain tabs of the examples you demonstrated? Thanks for considering my request and keeping up the good work!
Another challenge is to play thumb pick Chet Atkins/TE kind of stuff with hybrid instead. It's a pretty good estimation and has been a staple in my "acoustic" playing for many years.
i did hybrid picking most often when i was fairly good at guitar but got lazy or something so its just fingers now. i still do a flat pick depending on what i`m playing to but dont often hybrid pick these days. anyway, i noticed something about those mind-blowing hybrid pickers like Albert Lee or Johnny Hiland. They use the pinky finger to pick where, i could never quite get it. not being able to coordinate my little finger on my right hand i sorta gave up on hybrid picking because of that. lol
I loooove hybrid picking sounds and phrasing. Unfortunately I can only do an approximation by pocketing my pick and using all fingers. I developed a “bad” habit early on of holding the pick with my middle finger and thumb, rather than index and thumb. I found it gave me better control and tone because I could get more meat of finger under the pick. But it means I have less fingers available to do hybrid. So now I need to spend some years relearning and it makes me sad every time I try because I LOVE the feel of picking with middle finger and thumb and it feels so... thin, with the index instead of middle. Maybe this video will be the thing that pushes me over the edge to bite the bullet and woodshed. But this one
I had a related issue and changed how I hold the pick. It used to ‘dangle’ out the side of my thumb and index finger and that lacked control. I changed to curling my index back and gripping the pick from between the first knuckle and the thumb. It was weird at first but I quickly adapted - much more swiftly than I expected. I think that previous techniques mould into the new version rather than being lost and starting again. Anyhow - my flat picking improved and now my hybrid is much stronger.
@@JoshSmithGuitar I’d like to politely second the request for a few exercises that isolate the essentials of this technique. The triplets idea across three strings is awesome, what’s the mechanic for 3 notes per string? Any other drills you can cover would be wonderful. Perhaps a lick with those exercises at its core so there’s a musical application from day one. Much respect and appreciation sent from this Brooklyn picker.🤘🎸
Thanks for this! Iam at this Point that I play fast Blues stuff and I can feel that my hybrid Hand wants to help but dont Unterstands how. Do you know what I mean? This will help also will check out the danny Gatton lesson.
thanks so much for this, Josh and all of your other content. Just curious - how s l o w a tempo did you have to start with as you were working the downpick, index/middle double stop hybrid style?
I always thought hybrid picking was gonna be too hard and didn’t learn it until I was trying to learn the intro to Cry of Achilles by Alter Bridge. Once I started though there was no turning back. It’s such a great technique! Just need my fretting hand to catch up lol
A) Do you hybrid pick with your finger nail, the flesh of your finger, or a combo of both? B) Do you chose your t-shirt based on a riff that you're going to play in the video? Lol

This technique/approach to playing deserves it's own masterclass Josh. That would be one hell of a series!

Awesome playing. Thanks for the tips.

Great inspiration great player Josh. I am another Danny Gatton fan have been for years thanks.
This explains a lot about when trying to duplicate your moves
Thank you very much Josh! You Rock man!
what a beast on that tele.
I've found myself recently also starting to hybrid pick, without actually trying it, great technique
Man, thank you for sharing your technique and approach! What a great player. God speed.
Great job man! Thanks for sharing this... really nice to see and to learn!
Richard Thompson is so good at that hybrid picking style.

Without hybrid, we can't play two notes at once and use a pick, absolutely integral! Keep the low-end tight, and the top-end mellow.

Does Josh Smith have the best Telecaster tone or is it just me? It sounds mighty good from over here.
Hybrid picking is the way to go. Everyone will do it differently and you hear so much of the guitarists touch [ think mark knopfler ]
