FYI, I take no extra clothes, so if I get my hiking shirt wet and it isn't going to dry over night, I'm screwed the next day. My solution was not one but 2 Farpoint Gear fleeces - 1 90 gms and a second 60 gms combined there is no weight difference between two fleeces and my Ghost Whisper. with my sun hoodie and if necessary my rain jacket I have like 5 layers all with hoods that feel like you're wrapped in a teddy bear. Each one of those fleeces could act as a dry shirt the next day while the other remains dry dry. it all has to be paired with a windbreaker or you rain jacket due to the insane breathability of the fleeces but the versatility is unmatched. Virtually no weight penalty. you get rid of down that could get soaked.
By the way I'm doing the cirque section of the high route alone this summer. Kearsarge to the trailhead and then back to bishop pass via the high route. Let me know if you're down.

I work at a fish cannery 4 months a year, travel for 8.
The first year I saved 8 k, second year 13k, third year 25 k.
It's exhausting and grueling and the exact opposite of thru-hiking, 4 more days and then I'm off to walk Hawaii, the desert of the PCT then the UK.
This was a fun video idea. If you're taking requests on which thru-hike you should do next years, my vote is the CDT! 🤣 Not only would it be awesome to see you complete the Triple Crown, but I also think the CDT gets the least amount of online/ video coverage of the big three. I'd tune in religiously to see you hike that trail. haha
Noted for sure! It is high up in my mind as the strongest contender for next year. Stoked for the spring and to see which direction we go!

I really like the point you made about overlooking shorter hikes. I think for a long time I have thought that it would be cool to do a through hike, but like many people, I can’t afford to put my life on hold for up to six months.
The shorter ones are fantastic! And there's so many of them that hit so many different environments or locations. I did a little road trip with one day driving, 5 days on the tahoe rim trail, then another day back and that was great and a really epic experience. I hope more people do these kinds of things as I see a lot dream of something like the AT or PCT but it not being in the cards
I can only recommend doing the Te Araroa in New Zealand. I did it in the 22/23 season and it was one of the first things after graduating high school. One of the best things I have done in life so far.

Hey, I did the Bibbulmun Track! I can't believe I did a trail on Jupiter's wish list!
It's my second favorite trail in the world (after the Colorado Trail), but it does have a lot of road walking. It's also one of the easiest long distance trails out there. The flora and fauna are what its's all about.

I like the simplicity and authenticity of your videos ! You should add to your wish list the high route of the Pyrenees (HRP).. East to west, ocean to the sea, a bit of France, Spain, Andorra. Happy trails !

Jupiter, I am stoked about you doing the CDT too but only if you are fully prepared. The CDT is one of the toughest trails we've got in the US, all things considered. I know that you know that. Just be your normal thorough ("thoura'") & methodical self in you preparations please. Like a NASA launch, if you have to postpone, then you have to postpone. And I'll be watching for it.
I cycled from the north to the south of Japan solo about 20 years ago. Slept in forests and on beaches. Assembled my bike at Narita airport. Just watch in the tunnels and put a flashing light on the back of your bike because there's no shoulder in some of them... Awesome trip though.
I remember the emotion you experienced on that PCT bear experience. It was real.

@@JupiterHikes I planned my own route trying to hike as much as possible in the mountains. I posted a map on my blog (the blog is in Polish). For the advice, have in mind that many roads get closed due to landslides. Nearly all roads are paved so it's easy biking, though the country it's so mountaineous that it's hardly ever flat. Avoid the flats that are occupied by the cities and you will be happy in the wilderness. Japanese are friendly and resupplying is a lot of fun
I lived in Japan for a total of four years. You’ll do well with interacting because you present yourself as being very friendly. This really goes for any country with a different foreign language but learn a few key words and fraises. Also learn the art of the head nod when doing things like stepping up to counter to pay or as you say thank you after paying. Respect and a few key words go a long way toward fitting in as best you can in Japan.They are friendly, very respectful people.
I'd recommend the shorter European trails: Massive trail or Lofoten crossing in Norway (10-14 days each), GR 20 in Corsica, any Dolomit hiking trail e.g. Alta via delle Dolomiti, Kungsleden in Sweden (3 weeks), Skye trail in Scotland (you can also do West highland way for 6 days, take a train ride and then do Skye for 10 days), John O'Groats in Scotland hiking along the coas and passing many castle ruins, Camino de Santiago (5 weeks) or for a shorter version Camino Portuguese (2 weeks). Of course the Tour du Mont Blanc is an absolute must (France, Italy, Switzerland for 8 days). Hidden secrets are peaks of the Balkan trail or hiking in Transilvania.

If you ever make it to Australia, Tasmania is the best. On the mainland, the premier walk is the AAWT (Australian Alps Walking Track)
I've been really interested in the West Arthur's Range Traverse. No one talks about it, but it kind of seems like one of the most incredible unique hikes you could ask for.
I quite like how your videos are unique. Would you do the Tour de Mont Blanc?
I would love to do that one sometime! It's certainly quite the iconic trail!
I work as an analytical chemist in pharma and it works well for thru hiking. It takes around a week to a month to find a contract depending on how the job market is and 3 month, 6 month, and 12 month contracts are all available. Or you can just take a full time job and leave after a year or so. Biotech has fairly high turnover so it won't really raise any eyebrows to have lots of shorter term gigs.
You'll probably need to work a year or two at the same place in order to have experience to be considered as a contractor but you'll need to pay student loans off anyway so it works out. Requires a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, microbiology, or similar.
If your trip to Japan for bikepacking gets you amped to find more similar adventures, you might want to check out South Korea. There are two really awesome bikepacking routes there that many of my buddies have said are breathtaking. One route goes from Busan to Seoul and there is a second coastal route that follows the entire east coast. Both take you from southern points to the northern points of South Korea.
Also, I've lived in South Korea for many years and the hiking there is epic. So many easily accessible national parks and peaks. I'd say Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have so much to offer in the world of hiking. I've hiked just about everything in South Korea, so if you want any particular insights, let me know. The florida trail has like 300 miles of roads intertwined between the trail bits, so I would be skateboarding those! And carrying it the rest of the time

I work in education so i get about 2 months off for summer. I'm planning to hike the PCT in pieces each summer. Probably take me 3-4 years but it's about the journey ❤

Do the bike pack trip and then do the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage, a 750 mile hike around an island first referenced in the 12th century.

I recently watched a doc on Amazon prime video, on the I think cdt from Mexico to Canada. A young hiker died I think just north of Colorado.
As you walk quickly and can maximise your time of the year maybe in some ways the danger is a bit less.
Would you be able to focus a video on the dangers and the statistics of some of the trails.
Also a hiker became disillusioned and left partly because of weather and the long time the hikers were suffering.. at the time the ground was soaked and I'd expect feet health would be hard. This leads me to a fear I have about wet feet and river crossings.. how do you deal with this. If these questions dont interest you though I wouldn't spend time on them

I really like the idea of a ski resort I've been struggling with what to do in the off season besides working at a different box store and quitting every year when I want to go hike for 2 months
I do seasonal work to be able thru hike. There is a RUclipsr named Sintax and I believe he is a tax accountant. Bear encounters can be scary and I have had only black bear encounters.
Would you ever consider the Great Himalaya Trail? There is a proposed trail of more than 4500 km (2800 mi) stretching the length of the Greater Himalaya range from Nanga Parbat in Pakistan to Namche Barwa in Tibet thus passing through, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. If completed, it would be the longest and highest alpine hiking track in the world. I love the alpine, but this area of the world is so incredibly remote and unforgiving, I imagine the logistics of doing this safely would be monumental. I would love to hear your thoughts about this, or hiking in the Himalaya in general.
Your content is incredible. As someone who hikes a lot, I can appreciate all the work that goes into actually documenting your travels. Quality videography is challenging when you are completely exhausted. Thanks for all your hard work!

I read a book about two thru hikers who did it maybe 10 years ago, or at least a very large portion of what you're talking about. I remember they had to have a guide with them at all times which they didn't so much like but other than that I don't know much about it. Maybe something to look further into as I really would love to visit those places!
Have fun learning to ski! You will have a blast! As kids growing up in the Rockies, they would strap us onto skis soon after we could stand on two feet before fully learning to walk. We were too little to turn our skis in the snow, so naturally we just hot dog straight down the mountain. Turning was clearly overrated. I wouldn’t recommend this approach, as the benefit of weighing only 40lbs effectively means you are invincible when you crash. I have no doubt you and Sprocket will be pro skiers in no time!
That said, if you do fall in love with the sport as many of us Canadians do, then there is a whole other world out there in backcountry skiing. This may genuinely interest you. You should check out Cody Townsend’s “the fifty” project on RUclips for inspiration. His partner, Bjarne Salen, is a professional cinematographer so the quality of these videos is unreal. I could picture you enjoying a route like the Spearhead Traverse near Whistler BC. Ski touring comes with very real inherent risk. That said, with all you’ve accomplished, I don’t think there is any challenge you couldn’t overcome. Stay safe, and have fun!
I guess most people don't realize that Sprocket is allowed to stay in the US only for 6 months in a row (and typically in a year) - the move to Canada now and the idea of Te Aroroa may be connected to this?
The Canada thing is definitely a part of that, she can stay here for two years if she wants. As for the TA, it just looks really cool!

You mentioned travel nurses. A lot of healthcare professionals are able to schedule their work to allow for thru hikes, or have high demand fields such that they don't need to worry about being re-hired if they leave a position.
Sprocket is a radiologist and basically can work when she wants for how long she wants. It seems pretty great!
